How to Care for Orchids & Keep them Alive for 10 YEARS!

- Опубліковано 21 вер 2024
- Orchids need more than an ice cube once a week. I sit down with plant expert, Darryl Cheng (from @HousePlantJournal) to talk about how to keep orchids alive for up to 10 years. We cover off how to water orchids, where to place orchids in the home and how much light they need, how to trim them after the flowers fall off and so much more. After watching this, you'll be an orchid expert yourself. I went from having one orchid that was basically dead to now having 6 beautiful plants and counting and they're thriving! It's so easy to care for orchids if you know what to do. I hope you enjoy this video and please leave any questions or comments below.

My mom bought me a small white Dendrobium when we moved to Florida. I named her Mamasita. She flourished into a large orchid that bloomed beautifully twice a year. Sometimes three times a year. She lived to be 20 years old. Her roots are sitting under a tree in my shade garden. I couldn’t throw her away. 😢
@Elon Karson I’m confused. What does that have to do with orchids? 🤔😂
@@truepeace3 A Dendrobium is an orchid. Our commenting neighbor, is sharing her Orchid story.

After tossing out orchids for 20-plus years, I came across your video a while back and decided to try and "save" them and get them to re-grow. I followed your directions and got my first orchid revival!! So excited! And after that bloom died off, I cut node again and put in sunny window, and now have multiple shoots that should bloom at some point. I now adhere to your multiple-orchid strategy and have several in bloom for display and now up to four orchids in grow-mode. So THANK you Melissa and Darryl for your expertise and tips, so nice to ALWAYS have orchids in bloom and others ready to follow.
Mike Buchanan
Thank you I wish I did not cut those long he as ethyl g f lower spikes with all those nodes 😢
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Every year my dear husband gives me an orchid & every year that new one goes dormant, and I don’t know how to encourage more blooms. Now I do! Also, this was the most user friendly video I have seen for orchids so far.
Oh wow, thank you! Well I am confident these methods will help :) good luck!
I recommend you to watch missorchidgirl series for beginners :)
This video was exactly what I needed!! I was doing everything incorrectly! My Mother's Day orchids thanks you and I thank you for making this great, informative and easy to understand video!
This video has come just in time, I was gifted an orchid in July and have a few flowers left. I wanted to revive it but there was so much contrasting information it was confusing. I now feel confident to nurture my orchid towards new growth. Thank you so much x
SO happy you’ve done this video as I need to revive my orchids. Perfect timing!
I just went insane and bought like 5 orchids over the past two weeks; this is the BEST orchid video I've ever seen. Thanks Melissa!!!!
This was so informative. I’m hoping my new orchid will live long
Wow! I have just realized I'm doing everything wrong in caring for my orchid! Now I understand why I haven't had a bloom in years. What surprises me is that the poor plant is even still alive.
Orchids are my most favourite flower! Somethings not mentioned here were fertilizers and potting media.. I always repot my grocery store orchid 24 hours after I bring it home, I soak the media, bark in my case, for 24 hours and repot. The orchids often come in sphagnum moss that is choking the roots. They are grown on trees in tropics so it makes no sense to water with ice either 😂 great video though!
I’ve never had luck with orchids but I keep trying..I got my mother in law one for Mother’s Day..on the card that came on them it said to add 3 ice cubes..Mother Nature doesn’t have ice cubes..I’ve always hated they do that ..!!.Darryl has given me a boost of confidence that I can keep this one alive!! Thanks..
Nice video!!! I have three orchids...,I've NEVER soaked them!!!!! Just a little bit of water......my blooms last4-6 months!
Thank you so much!! I just got an orchid but did not know how to care for it. This video answered all my questions, and more!
Thank you for this! I can’t keep any plants alive and I thought all these misconceptions were true! Gonna try again with an orchid!
I knew of a place that rented orchids. Folks would come in and pick an orchid that was starting to bloom, and when it finished, would return it back and check out another. They paid a subscription for an orchid swap service, and always had nice orchids without the work.
Awesome video/ thanks for the tips!! My orchids will be so grateful! 😊
Thank you I got one for Mother's Day and I want to make sure I take care of it
This was so informative and so clear. Thank you so much! Going to buy my first orchid tomorrow and I feel much more confident in knowing how to take care of it.
My son gave me an orchid on Mother’s Day as present 🎁. Since then I’ve been searching on how to take care of an orchid, but I found out that as a beginner it was all confusing. Today I just bumped in to your channel and I find that this is the answer I’ve been looking for, very informative…thank you so much…watching from Japan 🇯🇵
Thank you for this video! I killed 2 orchids a couple of years ago but I just got another and am attempting to keep this one alive. Can you please have Darryl come back and talk about fertilizer and repotting orchids?
This video lesson is the best I've seen on orchids.
best video on orchids on all of youtube. Thank you!
I was gifted my first Orchid for Mother’s Day. It’s beautiful and I want to take good care of it so thank you for this informative video!
I am now mourning the 2 or 3 orchids I've had that I didn't know how to care for/revive. So glad I watched this!
I live in Brazil and here orchid experts say orchids don't like sunlight! Like the plant should be placed where no sunlight can hit them, but in a worm and moisture environment.
This video was quite surprising to me, but I'm gonna try it, cuz i love orchids but I'm tired of killing them.
Thank you guys! 🥰
I want to go buy tons of orchids now.
Yes! Space it out - buy a plant every 2 months for a year and you'll be good for a long, long time.
Thanks Melissa, I always assumed they were hard to take care of but this video proved me wrong lol!
This was very helpful. Now I know to keep them instead of tossing them. I did get rid of the spike! Will it reproduce?
You and your friend was my saviour, i saved my orchid. Feeling happy seeing the new stem popping out
Thank you for this Somerville chat and overview of lucid care and strategies! I was gifted one this week, and now I know how she wants to be nurtured!
Thank u ! I was just about ro dump my trader joes orchid. I will perform “surgery” and pray that it survives 😊
So happy you did this comprehensive guide to the moth orchid. Now I realise I have murdered quite a few from dehydration over the years. I had no idea why they died and I thought I have "over-watered". I now have a giant flower spike covered in blooms. Thankyou thankyou.
This was a very thorough video on orchid care. I'll recommend you, Darryl. Thank you!!
What a pleasant video 👍
WOW... JUST WHAT I NEEDED TO KNOW😃...off to try to revive my first orchid and by the way my tag did say use ice cubes... LOL NOW I KNOW BETTER😆! Thanks guys👍🏼
Thank you for this terrific information! Now I’m going to go get an orchid. I’ve been very intimidated since I read the Rex Stout books as a kid so now I feel confident that I can do this. Many thanks, again
I follow this guy on UA-cam and I have four orchids I have managed to keep alive and even one rebloomed for me! I now know how to keep them around and fertilize them and report them when I get a new one in the right medium.
Oh my gosh I love this!!! Would definitely like to see more content on plants. I kill everything. I have an ice orchid and the leaves still look awesome after more than a year but I think I may need to start over. I need help with mums! They are so beautiful but every one I’ve ever bought has died within 2 weeks! 😭
New follower here. I came across this video and being a new orchid lover and rescuer, Darryl's tips regarding taking care of orchids would be a great help to me.
Thank you so much! I have 3 and know I will change alot of what I do!!!!
Totally helpful. I am now beginning my orchid journey so thank you.
This video leaves out A LOT of valuable information on how to successfully grow Phalenopsis orchids. For example, they didn't even explain that the orchids in this video are Phalenopsis orchids, and that there are many other types of orchids (Dendrobiums, Paphiopedliums, Vandas to name a few) and they all require different care. With Phals, you can have winter bloomers or summer bloomers and then a dormant season where the plant focuses on growing new leaves and new roots. This video teaches you how to FORCE your orchid to constantly rebloom with no rest period. Does that honestly sound like a good thing? I highly recommend watching Missorchidgirl videos if you want to have a healthy thriving orchid collection.
I just got my baby , she's getting her first "bath" today , I think literally felt in love with her at first sight .
Thank you for this awesome video! It was so helpful. Particularly the analogy of you want the leaves to see the sky. So i found a low coffee table near the nexus of two windows (a west facing and a south facing window) to sit my plant instead of the bar-high counter it was previously perched on. I hope this is what Darryl meant. I didnt realize it needed 2-4 hrs of direct sunlight. Also just that the flower dropping was normal at 4-8 weeks and that cutting of the spike. All amazing tips! I feel less daunted by keep this puppy alive!! Lol 😆 thank you guys!
Very enjoyable, Thank You
Thank you I have one I think is dead but now I am preforming surgery now , It already looks better the last few seconds, Think she will come back healthy!
She TOTALLY will! You got this!
This was so informative! Thank you! Cathy
Thank you Daryl. I have just brought one.
Best orchid video on the internet
Oh my gosh thank you thank you thank you i just got one 3 days ago and i want her to live as long as possible
This video was sooo helpful! Thank you so much!
My 10 year old orchid was getting too tall and was falling out if the basket i planted her in. I had to cut it and reroot it 2 years ago. It is doing great grew new leaves and roots. It has rebloomed every December.
Great energy from both of you. Information was relevant and easy to follow. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much!! BTW love my Makers towels!
Wonderful educational video. Very easy to watch and your orchids and you guys are gorgeous. Happy Growing from your PhalPal Durrell ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏿🇺🇸
Thankyou soooo much for this video, I had my Orchids for years, before they finally all died. I don't feel like I killed them now, just they'd got to the end of their natural life.
Time to get some more now :)
Thank you for this. It gives me the courage to try again!
Excellent video. Thank you for the education! You answered all of my questions!!
One thing: I've started watering my plants once a month with banana water and I can see that all of my plants love it. I had been reading about banana water (put a banana peel in a quart of water for 2 days at room temp/or outside ... then toss the peel and you have banana water). I read that succulents and orchids love this. What is your opinion on watering orchids with banana water instead of tap water?
Thank you for the informative video. Time to revive my orchid! 😊
Great video. Could you say something about feeding and when/if to repot? I saw one video that said to feed every week. That sounds a bit excessive to me. Thank you!
I love watching her she is great
Such a great video - I learned so much about orchids that I honestly had no clue about 😉 Now I hope that I'll succeed in regrowing flowers on my orchid 😉
Thank you so happy I found your channel because I am a newbie orchid mom😂
My 8 year old just bought me an orchid and the tag on it literally says water with 3 ice cubes a week! Thanks for setting me straight!!
Amazingly helpful, thank you for this!!
My Orchid was a gift in 2005. She's a happy plant in dirt.
Orchids bloom way longer than 2 mths if you do it right. I have an orchid that has had blooms for 10 mths now and still going strong. The pots the orchids are in are a big no no for me! I use clear pots with lots of aeration and the roots love getting the indirect light as well. They do NOT like soil, nor sitting in water. It’s essentially an air plant. Also, place indirect sunlight. A bright area with no sun light hitting will be a very happy Orchid.
Some of my flowers last for 4 or 5 months and then reflower in a short time. I love them
Thank you sooo much for this! I have two dormant orchids that I’m hopeful I can revive now!
YES!
I have been taking care of my 10 orchids for 10 years and they have never grown such a long flower spike as yours. Do you fertilize?
Very informative.
Can I use coconut husk for my orchids?
Thanks for this. I thought I was killing my orchid and really it was just doing it's normal thing. I was watering it incorrectly however.....so thanks!!
Lovely
Great video, lots of interesting info 👍🏻
Just what i needed thankyou🔆👍
My orchid has stopped flowering and I have cut the stem back, tbh I love the green leaves so I would keep the plant even if it doesn't flower (although I'm sure it will flower when its ready xx
YAY! I’ve watched this twice already. Now excuse me while I go rescue my orchid! 🤣🌺
Great, really thorough and well explained! Thank you :(
Great video! Thank you for posting.
Question. Does it matter what direction the window faces for placing the orchid?
Ok. Some good information, but a not misleading. Just a few clarifications: indirect light for these phalaenopsis orchids- direct sun will cause sunburn and damage the leaves; watering- do NOT water into the crown of the plant, it can cause rot and kill the orchid. Be sure to water around the base of the plant. Also, you may get additional flower spikes, but this is at the expense of the main plant growth which occurs after the flowers fall off. The orchids shown here are likely 3-5 years old and to throw out an orchid after the flowers drop is heartbreaking. The plant would likely benefit from repotting. Miss Orchid Girl on UA-cam has over 2k videos on different orchid care for different varieties of orchids. She has beginners series as well advanced orchid care.
This is a really great video ❤️
Awesome video! So helpful.
How do we properly repot?
Also - what if we have a stem that is growing sideways and (completely horizontal with the leaves) ? In my case the horizontal stem is short but has already produced small blooms and flowers. There are currently no other “stems” and I may have caused damage when I decided to repot ☹️
Since I found this video my orchids are blooming so beautifully, but a couple of them are getting sad and their leaves are wrinkly now, a bit yellow and soggy. I don't do anything different to them, it's the same treatment for all of them, 15 orchids.
How can I fix this?
Is it a type of disease?
Darryl, I found this video with Melissa , very informative. I have 6 orchids that I am trying to bring back to flowering. My question, do you feed the orchids when they have no flowers or do you feed them only when in flower? Thank you 🤷♀️
My Phalaenopsis orchids have been in flower much longer than two or three months. My very first phal was in bloom for 2 1/2 years.
Thanks for the great tips! Love to know if there are differences in orchids/better for them outside? I love rescuing orchids at Big box stores & seeing them come back to life😊
I have yet to rebloom an orchid but I can keep an orchid in bloom for months. I have two that I bought in may and they are still going. 1/2 cup water if lots of space for air around the medium or 1/4 cup of water if no space around the medium
Thank you so much for that video 😍 I was just about to talso hrow away an orchid 😳 I will do as you say and also follow your video 🌸🌸🌸
Awesome tips...!
Hi Melissa, thanks for making this video. For the multi orchid strategy, what sort of watering and light do they need when their spikes are cut off and are growing again?
Thanks for the video. I have a small potted orchid plant that hasn't flowered in quite a long time even though it has been kept watered. How far down can I cut the main stem? Also, there are quite a few short 'green' rooty looking shoots growing out at the base of the stem. Do I remove them or let them stay? Also, I should mention that there are NO leaves on it, and there haven't been for a few months. So, at this point, I don't know if this orchid is salvageable or not.
Also whilst watering don't let water settle in Crown of plant, causes root rot
Thank u!
Thank you for this!! I live in NC, USA and have been keeping my orchid outside in the shade all summer, and it's been doing wonderfully. Now it's starting to get cooler at night - what temps can orchids tolerate?
Oh wow, that's so nice for the orchid! They like heat, so I'd say fall is a good time to bring them in and keep them in a nice, sunny spot.
Thank you, this was great! I've read that some types of orchids are poisonous to cats. How do I know what type of orchid I have and whether it poses a threat to my cats? I don't keep my orchid in good sunlight because of the cats and I'm sure it is affecting my plant.
Love all the tips, one question I have though is what to do if one leaf starts to turn yellow? Is it okay to cut it off?
Thank u for this video!
Hello! Great video and thank you. How long do you keep the orchid in the nursery container? Thanks
Great video!! I feel that I might be ready to take the plunge and get an orchid. However, how do you keep your cats away from it? I have two cats and I have to get creative to keep them away from my plants.
Omg this is amazing! Do you ever need to put orchids in a larger pot? You said you want thick healthy leaves and the roots, it when are there too many leaves and roots for the pot?
You can re-pot them with new medium when needed, but Darryl tells me they don't generally grow in size.
Ty for this! My only issue is that my current spikes are dead all the way to the leaves. Leaves are okay and new leaves and roots are growing. Not sure what to do if my spikes are gone, though :/
Brittany Blankenship I have the same issue! I’m hoping if I give it enough time and the right conditions a new spike will grow!
New leaves come first then between the new leaves a new spike will form. You will want to train this up the old stake as it will otherwise just shoot out in any direction, but generally not up! I think it's fairly normal to have a new spike about once a year with flowers lasting 1-6 months. Miss orchid girl on youtube has over 300 orchids and has plenty of beginner videos to growing and what's normal for a Phaleonopsis Orchid, or any other variety you may have!
Marisa S thank you!!!
@@brittanyblankenship5166 you can cut the spikes as they won't do anything anymore except take up space! Keep the sticks and clips for your next spikes! If you have a spike that drops flowers but stays alive it could bloom again later, i always leave anything that's actually alive. Good luck!
