Great performance from Kathleen Freeman. There is a lot of humanity and decency to the character. In her way she really cares about the boys. Very funny and touching scene.
It's hilarious, but the thing that always gets me about that scene is how the hell the stuntman pulled off that stunt without getting either paralyzed or killed. It's a very impressive stunt when you watch it closely.

bride of chucky I saw Blues Brothers first-run at the drive-in movie theater. I was 6-years-old in the back of a station wagon. Fell in love with the movie ever since.
Akroyd is a comedic genius. He and Belushi think up this Blues Brothers thing, then he throws the Ray Ban Wayfarers away, grabs another buddy of his named Harold Ramis, and writes a sceenplay that turns him into a GhostBuster. This guy did this before he turned 35.....And I brag on how i kill weeds in my lawn. Kinda puts things into perspective.
To me, the funniest part of this movie was when Belushi was in a kids desk rolling down the stairs! I STILL laugh at this scene!. It's a miracle the stunt double or Belushi didn't break their necks doing this scene. Priceless!.

Because she's standing on a moving platform that goes all the way back into the room, hidden by the camera and by the desk in the room where she was sitting when they entered. Then a production assistant hidden behind the door slowly pushes it closed as she hits a certain mark in the room. Easy stuff to build and film, but badass look for her character and this scene.

I attended Catholic schools from grades 1-12 in the 1960s and '70s. I can definitely relate to this scene; I've lost track of the number of times I've watched this clip, but it still cracks me up every time I see it.
My mum went to Catholic school in that era and she said the nuns were as hard as nails and spiteful. She said there were more horrible nuns than there were nice nuns
In the early 60's many public schools were the same, I recall my 6th grade teacher shaking this kid next to me so hard one of his penny loafers went flying up in the air. Mr. Jackson loved his yard stick too.
Kathleen Freeman, one of the greatest character actresses in film and television history. From "Singin in the Rain" and the "Dick Van Dyke Show" and "Hogan's Heroes" (remember her as General Burkhalter's sister Gertrude?) to "The Blues Brothers", impeccable timing, terrific comedic sense and visual presence. In less than ten minutes she almost stole the film. What a professional as well as a class act. Sadly, Ms. Freeman is gone as well but what a legacy.

This. This is one of the best movie scenes of all time, they hardly make films like this these days, especially musicals. They're always more of a 'broadway the movie' than a movie with great songs sung by the characters, the Blues Brothers are classics like Cheech and Chong, I just wish they made more of the Blues Brothers :(

Flipping down the stairs while wedged into an old-style school desk is one of the greatest stunts ever. I don't know how that guy survived without permanent spine damage.

In the TV version of this clip, the edited out all the swear words, so the clip made no sense. They told the nun she was "in trouble" and she just starts beating the crap out of them for apparently no reason. An example of where editing for television can just ruin a good story line. I always thought this was really funny. She hits them for saying a swear word, and they swear more when they are hit, so she hits again.
In the theatrical cut, the Penguin says “I’ll be sent to the missions” and Jake immediately responds. In the director’s cut, she adds “Africa, Latin America, Korea.” Quite a few scenes in the director’s cut include additional dialogue. Both cuts are included on the deluxe edition of the DVD. I think the flow of the theatrical cut is much better!
I saw this movie when it came out in a drive in and I was about11 or 12 and to this day I will always remember that this is the first movie I saw that I laughed the hardest at! It holds a real special place for me

When I first saw this scene in a theater at age 14 I never heard a crowd laugh so hard and so loud. I also saw Caddyshack in a theater and I remember the crowd going wild with laughter. 1973-1988 Definitely was a classic time period for seeing movies in a movie theater. I personally have not stepped foot in a movie theater now for some thirty years. And I can't name a single classic movie I missed during that time. Same for music. Every week for 20 years while growing up in the 70s and 80s I was at the music store buying something or recording off the radio. Now I have not bought a single piece of music or turned on the radio in decades. I also grew up a huge NFL fan. Now I haven't watched a game in 20 years and I could care less. Same for pro wrestling. I grew up on 70s and 80s pro wrestling. Attended dozens of live shows. The first thing my friends and I did when one of us was the first to get his license in 1982 was take a road trip to Atlanta and see a Georgia Championship Wrestling Omni show. Now I haven't watched wrestling in 25 years and whenever I stumble across it on TV I sit there in stunned disbelief. What the hell has happened? I can not believe the disintegration of all forms of entertainment in the last 50 years. Now on Sundays instead of watching the NFL I find myself more entertained watching QVC's In The Kitchen With David. I'm an eyewitness to yesterday's greatness and today's crapola.
This movie is so very, very Funny. The stunt in the desk down the stairs is TOP notch. I was never in one of these school, but I had an instructor in college who did attend one. He said the nuns were ninjas with those rulers. He went on to say they hit your knuckles every time. Thus they were Ninjas.... I love this movie, it has one of the best car chase scenes EVER.

As much cursing as there is in this scene alone, I definitely LOVE this scene for how hilarious it is! This is one of the very few R-rated films that can be safely played to a PG audience as there is nothing inappropriate outside of the swearing.
I always loved the tremor of dread in her voice when she talks about being sent to Korea. Conditions in South Korea have evidently improved a lot since 1980.
I still remember, the first time I saw this scene, at the moment when she starts hitting them rapidly back and forth with the ruler, I laughed so hard I woke up everyone in the house.
What I love is that in the end, the money isn’t stolen. They broke dozens of other laws in the process, but the money was legit.
Only after they got “Churched Up”!

I think sometimes people forget that Jesus didn't go to Church, and didn't spread Christianity because it was his religion, but because he genuinely thought it would help people. People also forget that he was crucified between two thieves, and that the worst of man are not those that we offer no forgiveness to, but those that offer no forgiveness.

Kathleen Freeman was an underrated comedic talent in her own right, not just in this movie, but in general.
She after all was in 11 jerry Lewis films including the original nutty professor in 1963
I can't even count how many times I've seen this film. Great scene lol.... This and Scene with John Lee Hooker are my favs!
When I first saw this scene in a theater at age 14 I never heard a crowd laugh so hard and so loud. I also saw Caddyshack in a theater and I remember the crowd going wild with laughter. 1973-1988 Definitely was a classic time period for seeing movies in a movie theater. I personally have not stepped foot in a movie theater now for some thirty years. And I can't name a single classic movie I missed during that time. Same for music. Every week for 20 years while growing up in the 70s and 80s I was at the music store buying something or recording off the radio. Now I have not bought a single piece of music or turned on the radio in decades. I also grew up a huge NFL fan. Now I haven't watched a game in 20 years and I could care less. Same for pro wrestling. I grew up on 70s and 80s pro wrestling. Attended dozens of live shows. The first thing my friends and I did when one of us was the first to get his license in 1982 was take a road trip to Atlanta and see a Georgia Championship Wrestling Omni show. Now I haven't watched wrestling in 25 years and whenever I stumble across it on TV I sit there in stunned disbelief. What the hell has happened? I can not believe the disintegration of all forms of entertainment in the last 50 years. Now on Sundays instead of watching the NFL I find myself more entertained watching QVC's In The Kitchen With David. I'm an eyewitness to yesterday's greatness and today's crapola.

This movie is so very, very Funny. The stunt in the desk down the stairs is TOP notch. I was never in one of these school, but I had an instructor in college who did attend one. He said the nuns were ninjas with those rulers. He went on to say they hit your knuckles every time. Thus they were Ninjas.... I love this movie, it has one of the best car chase scenes EVER.

It was probably cut. The original version of the movie was 2 and a half hours and the producers demanded the director and his team to make it shorter.
She expressed gratitude when she hit the Blues Brothers with a ruler and a rod! Mean Penguin.
Elwood and Jake are the only ones who can cuss like that, and still look (And are) freaking adorable.

The way she slid back into the door with it shutting behind her. 😂😂
There's a reason why the camera only shows her from waist up. Because she's standing on a moving platform that goes all the way back into the room, hidden by the camera and by the desk in the room where she was sitting when they entered. Then a production assistant hidden behind the door slowly pushes it closed as she hits a certain mark in the room. Easy stuff to build and film, but badass look for her character and this scene.

There are some scenes which, no matter how many times you watch them, never fail to bring a grin. This is one.
I remember Kathleen Freeman from Hogan's Heroes - she played General Burkhalter's sister. She was great in that too!
As much cursing as there is in this scene alone, I definitely LOVE this scene for how hilarious it is! This is one of the very few R-rated films that can be safely played to a PG audience as there is nothing inappropriate outside of the swearing.
