Ya gotta love the mentality of the "town hooligan" in westerns. "Hey, there's a scary looking stranger in town who may be heavily armed. Let's go harass him!"
They thought he wasn't armed because it looked like his gun was in the holster he wasn't wearing. Notice when he tosses the fake handle away. It's not in the clip but earlier in the film he's whittling the fake handle.
@@TheDaniel688 wow. you have great perceptiveness to detail. I never would have noticed all that. I was wondering why they were so confident, I mean its the wild west, its safe to assume everyone is terrifeid of each other and armed at all times.
One of the subtle details of this scene is the ambiance of the wind. Considering the pseudo-supernatural element to HPD, which I don't think is typical for westerns, the constant whistling of the wind over the plains adds an extra spookiness to the whole thing.
1st comment I've seen about this and it's surprising not many mention it. Agreed, and the wind fills in the gaps to make it more mysterious. Also, anyone who's lived on the great plains of the western frontier can relate, because the wind is whipping around just about non-stop in the wide open country. So yeah, the wind effect in this movie gives it some spookiness, yet a sense of relatability at the same time if you reside in this region.

Always good to remember that 95% of the people, including horrible villains you see on tv and movie screens are theater kids. Terrifying, mean, murderous monsters onscreen but grownup theater kids when the camera is off.
I was very surprised to see a 20yr old or so Jack Nicholson in an episode of Wells Fargo! All these classic tv series have stars who later became famous and recognized as a kid in the 80s! Nicholson to me was my 89 Joker!
One of the best out of character roles was seeing Downton Abbey's Mr Carson, English-born actor Jim Carter, playing Blackie, a gunslinging badguy, in 1985's western parody/spoof Rustler's Rhapsody. He's in the trailer a few times.
