I love how Blue Lou kept his sax on hand, because you never know when you might have a spontaneous musical event happen in a diner. He was a true professional.
The sax accompaniment really takes this version to another level. If you listen to the original you really miss it.
Guy knew he lived in a musical comedy world.
Similarly, Matt "Guitar" Murphy somehow had his guitar in its case and ready to go at the end of the counter.
I like how he is waiting for her permission at the end!!

It's truly amazing , the dancers , just look ordinary , the post lady ,with the other girls form a believable routine customer in the diner , then Jake and Elwood join in , Blue Lew ,Matt .. and Aretha select lines ,describing Jake & Elwood ..as ....diamond merchants , two white ... Is so realistic without being derogatory ...makes me chuckle no matter how many times I watch this scene ..The Ray Charles scene might no be understood by younger Audiences that didn't realize Ray was blind .. The church scene , with James Brown and the congregation joining in Wow , terrific

Her acting was impeccable, we don't even need to mention the vocals.
Nobody would have faulted her if she wasn't able to act, because she was there for her musical talent. Even in this scene, Matt Murphy is super stiff with his acting, but who cares because he's a kickass blues guitarist.
But damn, Franklin KILLS this scene. Every line is delivered perfectly and she follows that up with the best song on the soundtrack. The acting was so believeable, it made me second guess if it was actually Aretha Franklin before she started singing. Absolute Queen.

I was talking to my kids and nieces and nephews about the greatest female singer of all time. They threw names around like Ariana and Christina and even Mariah. Then, I played them a string of videos by Aretha. We all agreed. Aretha's the G.O.A.T..

The deadpan attitude of Jake and Elwood is just brilliant, they only appear to join in the dancing to relieve their boredom whilst Matt makes his mind up.
And this performance from the Queen of Soul is mesmerising, attitude personified.
Some forces are just too powerful to sit through. Aretha being one.

Those were the days... years before half the World walked around with their heads buried in their phones, walking around like zombies.
Never get tired of watching Aretha and this scene. Aretha's career and the careers of a lot of soul singers were on a down swing at the time, due to disco. This movie brought new life to Aretha's career as well as her new recording contract with Arista Records in 1980. The lady in the postal uniform is her cousin and long tme back up singer, Brenda, the middle, smaller lady is her sister Carolyn, and the taller lady in heels is her long time back up singer Margaret Branch. Unfortunately Brenda is the only one still living. May all of them rest in peace.
Wow that was a nice bit of information that I didn’t know. I just recently saw the movie of her life on the National Geographic channel, and made me realize what a great and phenomenal talent she was. I was to young to understand what a great voice that she had. But I remembered her song Respect and how I loved that song ( I believe that I was 5-6 years old at the time). RIP Ms Aretha Franklin. 💐

The amount of musical talent in this movie is just mindblowing.
That was kind of the point of the movie. Belushi and Aykroyd intentionally gathered as many blues and soul legends as they could to make the movie. It's amazing that so many agreed, even for bit parts like John Lee Hooker's brief appearance just before this scene.

I’ve always loved how Jake and Elwood just naturally join in dancing, like hell this is sick music of course we have to move. And the other cook just whipping out his sax, like he always carries it with him 😂 And the instantly-there perfect back up singers. I love this film.

My parents got me into this when I was a kid. Forever grateful that they did. They also got me into Animal House, Airplane and so many other great movies. Rest in peace Mom and Dad.

I grew up in the 80s & my mum worked in a video rental. She would let me watch anything i wanted, i grew up watching horrors & comedies. We watched so many comedies together. Blues brothers was my favourite, best feel good movie ever.

One of the greatest cameos in the history of cinema. The crazy thing is this is actually what the 70s were like, people would just burst into soul music at the drop of a hat. It was EXHAUSTING.

This movie really showcases the many talents that somewhat obscure black singers were overlooked . The Motown sound and dancing was so very terrific . I know this is a bit later than the Temptations , 4 tops , Supremes , days at Motown . Don't ever think that Lady Souls voice can ever be duplicated . This film has been so over looked ,granted later generations would not appreciate really ,the amazing talent , voices this movie showcases . Or the way it spoofs on the " trendy " cowboy music at the time , when it was rivaling the disco scene .The movie has historical lessons concerning trendy musical themes .

Look up the Cab Calloway "oh you wanted great? Why didn't you say so" story.
Before she sings her first note in this....Aretha establishes herself as THE one to watch out for. Her dialogue is delivered perfect.....followed by the singing. Can't get enough of just about everything in this movie.
She obviously put her all into this performance Acting and Singing all on point A small role but she made it count unforgettable

She is the same person whether she is wearing pink slippers and an apron or fur and diamonds. There is a message there too.

I watched this movie for the first time with my dad when I was about 7 years old (I am 20 now) and I clearly remember thinking that this was the best performance I had ever seen haha.

I had the directors cut DVD until the dog made it a chewy toy. It's 45 minutes longer than the theater version.
"IF" I had to pick a number one musical part of all the great acts, I would say Aretha Franklin's "Think" would be it.
She is so powerful in this.

One of the funniest movies ever. Don't know how they got all those heavy hitters to do cameos but it was priceless 😆
I think they'd have been looking for work. Disco wiped out acts like 'Ree and Brother Ray and James Brown for years. Good paycheck and priceless publicity.

As much as I love Aretha’s singing, I can never get over how funny it is that when she starts singing, Blue Lou can hear her and blatantly decides “Hell yeah, time to play sax again!” It MAKES the song but it makes no sense regarding whose side he should be on. All the more funnier when Jake and Elwood join in as backup dancers.

At the end of the song when Matt Murphy walks out with Jake & Elmwood and Blue Lou looks at Aretha like a little puppy dog with that "please" look on his face she tells him, "Well go on, dammit!" She knows his talent was being wasted washing dishes.
For those of us who grew up in this time and lived in the region in 1979-80 when they were filming this, I love how they captured the look and feel of Chicago from this time, the cars, the fashion/clothes, hairstyles, etc, and the outlying city. Watching this in blu-ray high-def is like a time machine. Fantastic memories
The car crash scene is unreal -- what, a 40-car pile-up?? Chicago drivers!
I think Ferris Bueller's Day Off is the closest a movie has come to celebrating Chicago the way it is celebrated in The Blues Brothers.
Don't forget 16 Candles out in the suburbs. So many great movies from there in that time. Oh....and shout out to "Briefcase Full of Blues" album by the Blues Brothers - opening act at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. Didn't take me too long to figure out why there were soo many Togos and Blue Brothers sideburns at the keggers in the frat houses nearby back then. Sweet memories - don't think another musical will top this one EVER....
I love how the bystanders and Jake and Elwood just start dancing with them all. Also Aretha is almost inconceivable with her excellence.
