Just listened to it which brought me here, it's good and what a pity that Riley died so young like that,he had the world at his feet Damned drugs again. I think they sounded very like classic Sodom.

Reign in Blood had a locked groove on the vinyl as well. That's why the ending to Raining Blood is so abrupt. What happens is the original vinyl record drops into a "locked groove" which infinitely loops that thunder/rain segment. Another reason I agree Reign In Blood is on another level artistically.

    • @ignatiusjackson235

It would have been hilarious if Side B of the Reign in Blood cassette tape had consisted of nothing except for those thunder and rain sound effects.

Fun fact about Devastation, when DEATH did their first tour through Texas, Devastation opened up for them. And for the first few shows Deva was putting on a kickass live performance moving around headbanging and what not, but DEATH would stand still like statues. So, their band manager said "Hey yall gotta get more into it, Devastation is outperforming you guys and getting the crowd going" so because of Devastation, DEATH started to move around more and pump the crowd up.

      @Morbidous 2 роки тому +7

@@Morbidous Death metal as an entire genre owes so much to Slayer. They sounded nothing like the "Big Three" at the time. It's only in retrospect that we started to consider them thrash in the same way. In the '80s, Slayer (and Sepultura) may as well have been death metal, they were so much more extreme.

Hell Awaits is very much a gem unto itself. If the reverb wasnt so Dang high up on Tom's Vocals, lol.
I was playing " Awaits" back to back with KREATOR " endless Pain" recently, both 85 releases, both very fresh in the thrash recording history.
They feel very " DIY". The Kreator album states that the guy who recorded it had no clue how to record metal, it lends a charm.

When it comes to Reign in Blood, I would say it's probably in the top 5 most influential metal albums of all time. Right up there with Black Sabbath's debut and Number of the beast by Maiden. Slayer laid down the ground work for all of extreme metal. Virtually every band that came after Slayer in both the death metal genre and black metal genre has named Slayer as an influence. David Vincet from Morbid Angel, Fenriz from Darkthrone, Chuck Schindler from Death, Max Cavalera of Sepultura and many more.

You got that from some fucked up fanboy who writes for some magazine you tend to read. Just listen to Reign in blood and then Darkness descends and then Pleasure to kill and you tell me which album sounds like death metal the most. Right answer is not Reign in blood.

But that doesn’t make it a more influential album since it wasn’t released until 89 but the music speaks for itself and it took form without the influence of reign in blood.

@@dekapitatorr but dude death metal was evolving before reign in blood. And hell awaits sure was an influence. The scene in sweden with bands like Nihilist, Morbid, Grave, Mephisto and more were all children of Bathory mainly but of course you had Venom, Hellhammer/celtic frost, Kreator, Sodom, Destruction and Slayer in there as well but more so you had the tape trading with bands like Sepultura, Sarcófago, Death, Morbid angel, Repulsion and so on. We’re talking pre-86 here. Post-86 I think we can narrow it down to 3 albums. Leprosy and Beneath the remains were albums that really got the morrisounds sound known and that in itself is a huge part of death metal but the album that really solidified the sound - where you have the grind in there as well - is purely and simply Altars of madness. Yes you hade bands like Carcass, Sarcófago, Napalm death, Terrorizer, Repulsion that were blasting and growling early but Altars really got it out to the masses. Here is my ranking of the top 25 thrash metal albums released between 1983 and 1991. For the purposes of this exercise, the term 'thrash metal' designates a group of bands that were influenced, directly or indirectly, by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and by American hardcore punk bands. Musically, these bands are characterized by fast, tremolo picking and extensive use of the 2/4 "skank beat" and double bass pedaling. I grant that this definition does not lend itself to a precise demarcation of the genre, so some arbitrariness at the boundaries is inevitable. I have decided that, e.g., Sepultura's _Arise_ (1991) is a thrash album but Pantera's _Cowboys From Hell_ (1990) isn't, on the vague grounds that the latter album has too much "groove" to really count as thrash.
Some people will object that my criteria for ranking are too indeterminate, subjective, and impressionistic to be worth anything. Those people are absolutely right.

I think we need more than one album in "Legend"! It's not even fair to say that only Slayer is a legend because of Reign in Blood. With that being said, how do you not put " Kill 'em All" in early essential!? It was 1983 and it all but started "Thrash" ! No mention of Anthrax, Death Angel, and the one that honestly kinda pissed me off was Testament -The Legacy! This album should have easily been in the top 5 of early essential! All killer No filler! Thrash is supposed to be raw, fast and loud! And just so it's mentioned, Vio-lence - Eternal Nightmare is hands down one of the greatest 80's Thrash albums ever 🤘

Thrash metal is my shit and I’m also in my late 40’s, and have listened to thrash since Master dropped. Master of Puppets is my second favorite cd of all time & of course Ride the Lightning is a classic, but to me Kill Em All was their true thrashterpiece! Master & RTL both have their share of slower songs but you will not find one on Kill Em All. Give Kill Em All another chance and see if you don’t agree. Great video! 🤘🏼

@@js92css I'm 55. I bought Kill the day it came out. All of us dumped Heavy Metal that day. Kill is the first and True thrash album. How in the hell could it not be?! I love Show No Mercy, and Bonded by Blood, etc., but Kill was so off the hook, it changed everything. The shows in NYC on that tour were just violence. Venom and Slayer shows also had venues smashed apart and fights. That was thrash (theoretically).

The conversation about tapes was cool. I myself just love physical media in general. I think what's really driving the return to physical is more of a practical concern though, and that's that with streaming in general, you don't own anything. Your library is dependent on the whims of the streaming service, the artists, and and their IP lawyers. And that's lead to a backlash. In music, that's been a return to physical (tapes, vinyl, and cd), while with movies it's been a return to piracy.

Am I the only one who thinks reign in blood is overrated? It's not even the best slayer album. I enjoy hell awaits and south of heaven more. Perhaps even seasons And you can make a case for show no mercy as well.
I think people appreciate the aesthetic of RIB more than the actual music. It's fast, it's quick. It's brutal.... But musically,It is very one-dimensional and rudimentary. Almost slapped together in punk- like fashion. most other slayer albums have more diversity in songwriting, more complex structures, and better production.
Out of the big four's studio albums, have it RIB ranked 29th out of 47 and the 6th best Slayer album.
RIB is a solid album but overrated. Does not deserve anything close to the accolades it gets.

It's the overwhelming common opinion. I dont love it that much. Slayer is great, I like everything they did, which in itself is unpopular. There are certain albums people always shit on, but I like them. DIVINE, SEASONS, WORLD PAINTED BLOOD, I like these albums quite a bit more than Reign. Whatever, the cheeseball stands alone. Freedom to like what we want , Metal.

    • @citylights8521

I don’t know if overrated is the right word cause it IS an important album for the genre but I don’t understand when it’s seen as sooo superior over every other amazing album. All these comments like ”no one was doing that”, ”it’s only 29 minutes”, ”no one dared to do that” etc etc. What about Speak english or die? DRI? And in all honesty as you pointed out with the music itself. Angel of death sets a standard that we don’t get to hear again until we get to song nr 10. The album is really about those two great songs. The rest is really good - reborn and epidemic I’m sad to say are fillers - but the album as a whole really isn’t that strong. But it’s simply a common and cool opinion to praise this album and of course it stems from reviews and magazines to a large degree. It’s kinda comparable to how mainstream radio tells people what music they should like.
You can just tell when Sam talks about it that it’s almost like a sports team that he’s rooting for and it’s just flat out silly. I mean come on.. musically it’s not really that big of a leap from Hell awaits in regards of speed and such. Heavier production for sure though. And compared to something like Darkness descends. I think they’re really on par with eachother as a whole but Dark angel was a little faster but much angrier to my ears. Reign never reaches that pure fury that darkness has.
Either way, I agree with what you said man 👍

"Nightmare Logic" is not only one of the best thrash albums of the 21st century, but easily one of the best heavy metal albums of the 21st century, period.
Kinda wish Havok would've made the modern list simply because "Time is Up" turned me onto the modern thrash revival scene (I was, unfortunately, YEARS late to Municipal Waste and Toxic Holocaust). "Prepare for Attack" is still one of my favorite opening tracks to an album, ever.
Also kinda wish one of Death Angel's 2010's-era albums would've *at least* gotten a mention. Much like how Blayne threw that modern Testament record on there to appease the old-heads while still testifying (pun kind-of intended) to the modern (post-2000) era of thrash: "Relentless Retribution" and "The Dream Calls for Blood" are fucking TERRIFIC modern thrash albums.

As someone who was in his teens during the Golden Age of thrash, I cannot abide Among the Living not being anywhere on this list. I get the point of Lock Horns (I’ve been a subscriber since 2016). You can argue what you think are the merits of Anthrax. You can argue that they should abdicate their spot on the “Big Four” to Exodus (a patently absurd take that falls flat on its face from the start). But to say that Among the Living doesn’t even get an honorable mention as an essential album is a bridge too far. Banger was great in the beginning, but the direction it is going in has been losing me for a while; too old for the Twitch crowd I guess. This show is the place where I bow out. It’s been fun and I wish the Banger crew the best in the future. With that said, I click unsubscribe.
