These guys have made the simplest setups and standard tuning sound monstrous. It's all in the skill and the chops, and they've got them in bucketloads. Awesome.

Yep, Power Trip is one of the very few mainstream modern metal bands I enjoy, alot is their creativity & originality I know but you also need to have a pleasing sound, the tones are beautiful & downtuning just sounds bad to me.
There isn’t anything primarily bad with down tuning. Sure, keeping it old school is great but don’t downplay the rest of the players out here experimenting!
I would assume that they downtune to accommodate the vocalist’s key yenno. The top string being the key for a song makes it easy to get some riffage going.
Rick Beato did a good video about string gauge. People think that the heavier the better the tone but that's not necessarily true. I use 10's for my guitar that's tuned to D standard and 9's for the E standard tuning. I've heard this band on Liquid Metal and they kick ass.
I find the E tuning interesting myself (for the genre). Picking things up out of their playing. This was a really cool video. I have the ENGL amp in some pc amps sims. Took a snap shot of the settings. Going to try them out in a bit. :)

This guy did a good job with the questions on gear and equipment and stuff…it’s more interesting than the bullshit questions you hear like “what age did you start playing” or “who were your biggest influences”.

Pretty interesting that these two guitarists from Power Trip are using Ernie Ball Super Slinkys. There is a Hybrid Slinky set that still has the 9 on the high E string but with a 46 on the low E string. That would be good for them to play the Hybrid Slinkys or just the Super Slinkys, either one. But the RPS or the Paradigms will definitely last a lifetime and can hold out very well on touring cycles. Only difference, price wise, is that the RPS are cheaper than the Paradigms.
