HOW TO RAISE A DOGUE DE BORDEAUX

  • Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. When you take a dog into your life, you need to understand the commitment that dog ownership entails. The Dogue de Bordeaux is among the several AKC breeds who history stretches so far back into ancient times that pinpointing its exact origins is impossible. One theory maintains that the Dogue is an indigenous French breed developed over thousands of years. Other theories name the Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Tibetan Mastiff, and Greek mastiff-types as possible close ancestors.

    Regarding Breeders of any Dog breed.... the main goal should always be primarily breeding for health& NOT to win Dog shows. As a buyer (owner) of a dog...I could care less how many shows (prices) the father & mother of my pup has won...it doesn´t mean anything to me...What is important & crucial is how many quality years my dog will have with us...how healthy it will be. Cosmetic imperfections that won´t affect the dogs well beeing are irrelevant.

    This woman is an excellent ambassador for the breed. She is knowledgeable and honest with an obvious love of the breed.
    One drawback to this breed is their short life span. They really are a beautiful breed of dog that gets lots of attention as soon as they show up anywhere.

      Hi, thank you for your kind words of my knowledge. I truly love this breed and want anyone who is considering the breed to know what they are getting into. Like any puppies they are all cute but as they get older they grow and with that growth they get curious and bored if not properly cared for. I just wanted to let people know to truly do their own research if considering this breed and if their personal life style will coexist with the DDB.

      Thanks so much for responding to my comment. You truly were awesome and your love and knowledge of the breed shines through when you are speaking. I have not yet owned a Dogue De Bordeaux but I have had Bullmastiff's and American Bulldog's. I have interacted with the DDB and each time the experience was fantastic. I love the breed and love their personality and look. Good luck going forward and thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience with a truly awesome breed. Thanks again and God bless. 🙏 👍

      @knix2for5 2 роки тому +5

      @@stargod3064 longer muzzles , open nostrils, breeding programs based on performance and less according to type . That will weed out a lot of the show breeders there. A lot of show breeder dogs from working backgrounds also have bad feet , hips, and elbows. Thats why the bigger breeds have bad health issues from yrs of these breeding practices not based around working and performance.

    • @esperanzacarrasco2606
      @esperanzacarrasco2606 2 роки тому

      @@knix2for5 what you say is true, however, a lot of good breeders do health testing to ensure that they are not breeding a DDB who has preexisting health issues so that those issues are not passed down to their offspring. I would love to see the breed have a longer life span but the fact of the matter is we cannot have bred to another dog like the Boreboels like others have mentioned. AKC has the "breed" standard for each breed that is recognized. If the breed is then bred to another breed it changes the "standard" and then there would no longer be pure bred dogs. Also, it's not just the DDB that has a short life span. It's any large dog like the Saint Bernard. I hope this helps.

    I just got an adult male from a family that works a lot and they were coming home to a lot of mess. I’m a stay at home dad with 2 kids 9 and 5 with a female border collie pit mix and they hit it off great. The DDB sits and waits for my command to eat, he thinks he’s a lap dog and is super sweet and gentle with the kids. When there’s a knock on the door, he’s the first one there with a beautiful intimidating bark. I love this particular DDB and if most DDB are like this, this is definitely the breed for me.

      Good point, I also wonder if crossing them with Boerboels or similar mastiffs would improve their lifespan. The problem with the CURRENT Dogue de Bordeaux is the same as with the French Bulldog, they made them Brachycephalic, which is an affront to nature. Their heads are too large and their snout too short. Here is a drawing from circa 1900 and the snout was just as long as a Borboel or pitbulls, upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/40/Dogue_de_Bordeaux_BDL.jpg/1280px-Dogue_de_Bordeaux_BDL.jpg and even back then in the early 20th century the Dogue the Bordeaux breed was already in a downward spiral due to breeders not giving priority to working dog traits

They only backed off when I showed absolute firmness and stood my ground. They tested me constantly and one minute they were okay with me and the next they approached me with absolute aggression. They seems to be a bit of a nervous breed at times in my experience but that was only two that I met. Funny enough the male seemed more chill than the female. Just my opinion and experience. Remarkable dog for guarding but I don't think they are ideal in every situation with their size and lack of cardio.

Capacity for water retrieval, herding, agility, etc. and the doodle problem if you wanna get controversial. We’re getting one someday and a lot of people think we want a pansy dog or a circus performer, meanwhile everyone and their mother has a sheepadoodle and bernadoodle.

The dogs do fine being home alone especially if you have two...any dog enjoys company. I have no idea where some of your information is coming from...mine are active...run..swim ect...nice video but I am not sure your qualifications since you left out the importance of health testing as well as reputable breeder. if you are reading this as a potential buyer...if the breeder has not done health testing then do not buy the dog!

I think it may be because I have other active breeds.. a pitbull and a Rottweiler... and they all live and play together... plenty of informal good exercise . Also, I feed raw daily (main meal) with only a little kibble at night. It seems to me that many folks keep DDBs heavier than they should be. Keeping them in working condition helps their health, activity and longevity.

    Wrong! Food should be protein based! Carbohydrates cause inflammation in the joints! Her dogs are also overweight and overfed, its funny she talked about Turner and hooch because if you look åt the dog in the first movie with tom hanks that dog is much leaner and healthyer and much more athletic then her dogs,i dont feal shes representing the breed or care of the breed properly..
    But hey thats just my opinion..

    “We did a lot of research on the breed”

      I’m pretty sure if you had a camera in front of you you would also mess up on a couple of words because you were nervous.

      I was extremely nervous and struggled getting a lot of words out. I'm sorry you feel that way.
