How long do they live? Are they generally healthy?

    • @nicoleriesgo9567
      @nicoleriesgo9567 8 років тому +18

Generally they live between 8-10 years. We are working hard to get their lifespan into a higher range, say 9-11. I know quite a few that have lived between 11-13 years. Their health really depends on the dog. Each dog is different and has a different lifestyle. We are plagued by all the regular big dog issues and like most breeds right now, the main medical issue is cancer. The American Bullmastiff Association (ABA) has been doing a major medical study to track what medical issues are prominent within the breed. There are a number of things that the owner can do to aid their general health like having the right protein content in their food, appropriate exercise, supplements and preventative veterinary care.

I have a brindle bullmastiff named Ralph, he’s so loving and protective of everyone in my family. The woman in this video is so right about the breed! I’ll throw the ball for Ralph and he’ll look at it and lay down lol. He always wants to be with the family, but he also is very aware of his surroundings. Sadly, he’s 9 yrs 8 months and getting close to passing, but he’s lived such a great life and I’ve never regretted getting my wonderful dog.

Very laid back and quiet till a legitimate change in environment that they feel need to be alerted he would suddenly let out the largest deepest bark I've ever heard. Lol they will definitely scare off a bad guy

She knows her Bullmastiffs! FABULOUS breed of dog. Menacing look but hearts of GOLD ! Sweetest dogs going. I had Boozer for nine years, nine WONDERFUL years and we lived in an area with a lot of pit bulls. All I had to do was walk with Boozer down the sidewalk and the seas would part, like he was Moses at the Red Sea ! In the few scrums we got into (inadvertently) Boozer would throw a right paw, knock the other dog off balance and usually down and Boozer would pin the other dog until he submitted. Bullmastiffs are NOT killers, they are "submitters", they overpower a dog and gain a dominant position and that's that ! Boozer was "Therapy Dog" material but he was just too large and just nudging against an older person could knock the person down. RIP BOOZER ! I LOVE YOU ALWAYS ! and p.s. Jax is BEAUTIFUL !

I lost Elsa at 10 years. A most fabulous family dog who grow up with my two children (from 6 and new born). i can not begin to tell you what a wonderful dog she was, to think of her now still brings tears and we all still miss her. On one occasion I was out walking her and two drunken dick heads stopped me and threaten me with a bottle, raising it above my head with the intention to strike. I said out load 'have you not seen what I have by my side' Elsa just looked up at them, move that bottle one more inch and I will introduce you to her. At this point and for the first time ever, Elsa growled and bared her teeth. Lets just say I was not hit and the nobs walked on and apologised lol

Great video! We had a female Bullmastiff and she was the best. Lost her at about 8 to Cancer. In my search to find a similar dog that lived a bit longer and was a bit less prone to health issues we got a Boerboel next. She was a little different, but really good too. Higher energy, about 30lbs bigger, and a bit more aggressive in a good way. Now we recently lost her to a health issue, and here I am again contemplating our 4 legged future.. I never look at it like I'm replacing a dog when we get another dog. I look at it as I'm just getting another family member. The soul crushing loss is awful when you lose them, but it's no match for the years of joy and laughter they give you. So soon we will begin again..

Thank you Nicole for this wonderful and accurate video. My un-neutered show bullmastiff, was a red-fawn color similar to Jax's. It touched my heart to see you with Jax since it brings back so many memories. My boy was named "Grendel", after the monster in "Beowulf" the oldest epic poem in Old English. He lived to 12 years old and I was heart broken at his passing. For a number of years I worked from home and was a bachelor, so it was just Grendel and myself for hours on end. We formed a VERY tight bond. He had a 200 word vocabulary after years of constant training, and he protected me several times where he actually took control of the situation in a very concious and calm manner - he totally dominated these situations by using just the right amount of force, the minimum needed to control the adversary and nothing more. It was amazing to watch his mind at work. And, he was the most loving, funny, loyal, caring, tender, and wise companion anyone could wish for. Bullmastiffs all the way! I am planning on get a new guy this year (2019), and watching bullmastiffs online is how I ended up viewing your video. Jax is luckly to have you for his 'mistress'.

@@HollywoodColt the english mastiff is much bigger and lazier. It is very much an easy dog to live with.
The bull mastiff is a mix of the english mastiff and the old english bulldog. So it is more athletic and energetic. Not as big and heavy as the english mastiff.
Both are great dogs but weigh up what you want from your dog and your lifestyle. For example I know they are great but I don't have any because my lifestyle is very active and I want to share that with my dogs. So right now i have a pair of amstaffs. Super high energy, very athletic and I can do a lot of my running, cycling and hiking with them.

She joined my mother in visiting old folks homes etc. and I can easily see the part of the video where she explains that a simple change can "trigger" their instincts. We changed a pot around in the garden, she would circle around it and tell us something was "wrong" with her turf. I miss that dog so much, there's so much more than words can describe. She was perfect. The old timers loved her, and she loved them. RIP Hera.

Don't wait to long, even if they are to rough for a minute, he will stop them, they just know how without any agression. My children were just like that, pulling at his skin and ears. He would just put his massive foot on them and try to play
You really do have to have one before you can understand them, they're beautiful dogs and very gentle with wee human's. Their interactions with children can sometimes bring a tear to you. So don't wait, there's no need! Get one, you will not regret it. Ps. Inclusion is what they crave the most. Even if it is only a ride in the car for milk!

I had a fawn male bullmastiff named Sam who was a wonderful family dog as well as being both a Canadian and American champion. He was the easiest dog to train of the three breeds I have owned. I highly recommend getting a bullmastiff as they are ideal for families with children.

I have owned dozens, upon dozens of breeds, but the Bullmastiff is a very unique breed !? I am so attached to this breeds everything, that I can't imagine ever owning another breed !!? Their shear dedication, and concern for their owner, has spoiled me !!! Highly intelligent, great memory, nose, eyesight, sensitive, yet tough, alert, yet calm, doesn't bark unless necessary, doesn't bite, unless necessary, just the best family guard dog, and companion, you could ask for !!!

My best friend was a bullmastiff and he was very protective of me. He gave me so much unconditional love and he always cocked his head in the funniest way at us...I lost him due to sickness. I miss him so much everyday. When he was a puppy I was a baby so we really grew up together and sometimes I can still hear his barks and see him running all over the backyard from one side to another.

😲 this owner REALLY did their homework. I really appreciate dog owners that know their breed to understand the function of their breed. Thanks to this lady I’m interested in the the bull mastiff. Thanks Zeke once again. Your channel really has broadened our horizon with different breeds without the hype. Since we’ve been watching we’ve added another Anatolian/bull mastiff/ Great Pyreneese mix, Caucasian Ovcharka and a Tibetan Mastiff in addition to our other ragtag pack of dogs. Your channel really pointed us in the right direction for the breeds that were a fit for us.

Your Jax is magnificent! I just lost my Boy Jackson to lymphoma last month he was 7 and brindle 😭❤️😭💔Needless to say I’m devastated by his loss. Everything you say about this amazing breed is so true. They are the sweetest, most loving, faithful dog you’ll ever find. I didn’t think I’d get another Bullmastiff or any other breed after losing Jackson, but after having a bullmastiff in my life I can’t imagine my life without one.

I've owned a Bullmastiff, he was so gentle, loveable, and loved kids. I now own a Bullmastiff/Shepherd mix. He's 125 pounds and looks exactly like his mastiff part except for the nose. The only drawback owning one his their lifespan. The average lifespan is 8 to 10 years. Our dog gets excited when I tell him the grandkids are coming over. He's so good with them, and takes all the ear pulling and being used as a pillow in stride.

I own a bullmastiff cross. Massive big girl and I love her drooling face haha. Always really chill and loves to greet people when going on a walk. she is extremely protective at home but I make sure she sits a behave. When people enter the house I have her go to them instead of having people approach her, after that she's your best friend. We look after a 3 year old and he's been coming over since he was 1. she loves the little boy to bits and will follow him around and just loves cuddling him and playing.
