Owning a puppy made me so much happier, I was very depressed, and she made me have to exercise, sleep, cuddle and meet new people. Owning a dog changed my life, which sounds stupid, but it really did.
POTATO WITH STANDARDS ! Well, I’m sure you’ll be able to take care of them properly once you have what you need to take care of them, and what you know what you’ll have to do.
Not stupid at all!!!! Same with me! I love my giant fuzz ball! He brings my mood up and helps me with stress. I went through some of the worst things in my life with my fur baby. My dog is only 2 years old & in a span of the almost 2 yrs.we've had him, I went through 5 major family deaths, losing our home to severe medical debt that hit us when my husband needed 3 major emergency surgeries in a span of an 8 month period (had to move back in with my parents), I ended up in & out of the hospital because I have so many medical problems, & so much more. I have no idea what I'd do without my Simba. ❤ owning a dog changed my life too. I had never had a pet, ever. Wasn't ever allowed to. Having him now, is such a joy. I definitely understand the initial puppy depression & how much work it is because I didn't expect him to destroy so many things initially. However, it's still worth it. 🤗😍❤
@@davidb.854 I'm so sorry you havs to go through those long ass shifts, but don't get jaded! You're doing a lot of good, and you're appreciated more than you think. I'm adopting my first dog ever next week and i think this video and my book that i am reading "The Dog Owner’s Manual: How to Raise a Healthy, Happy Dog" By Sylvia Adams will make our life together way easier ! Thank you for all your awesome work !!
yeah way too perfect! I bet he has some cob webs, maybe he's a vegan? or worse one of those split billers that only pays his portions down to the cents!
dan le yeah because standing up against the blind support of mass torture, rape and murder of animals (some more intelligent than this puppy) would make him a horrible person, thank God he’s not vegan
kelly 10012 great you are defending yourself, so you should. All the respect with the virtue you live by, much better person than myself. The punchline was a slight jab at the generalization of vegans who feels the need to joyfully recite their philosophical journey and sometime with the graphical depiction of how raw meat looks like just as im about to bite into a juicy steak (yes I have already accepted im going to purgatory). But please let me enjoy my 3 meats and a veggie meal. Need to check with my vegan friends if eating too much carrots can result in excess sarcasm.
My dog died a few months ago and I have to say that it's true that dogs contribute to your mental health. Ever since she died, I've been suffering with depressive episodes and I find myself a lot more sadder. She definitely made me a lot happier and even though I obviously aren't going to get a dog straight away, I'm hoping to rescue a dog or two in a few years.
When I lost my Shiba, Faust, to cancer 6 years ago it wasn't just hard for me. My rescued pitbull, Betsy, was devastated. I wasn't prepared for how much this affected her. 😢 I had to make adjustments so that she was with someone 24/7. 6 months later, I adopted another rescue. A 6 week old pit/great Dane mix that I named Kakoe. That was almost 7yrs ago and they are so happy together! Please, no hate for how young she was. Her mother had died from neglect and Betsy became her surrogate mother. 🥰💞
Your other video about Bear is like " YES GO GET A DOG ITS GOOD FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH" This video is like "YOU MIGHT WANT TO RETHINK GETTING A DOG BRO"
This video is just trying to help people understand that a dog/puppy is a lot of work that is necessary. I would hate to see a dog get obese, violent, etc because someone wanted a dog just because it's cute and they wanted to cuddle with it.
Thank you for talking about puppy depression!! It's not talked about very much but VERY REAL!! I've wanted a dog my whole life and when I finally got one, I was so depressed and feeling like 'what have I done' but luckily got through it
I work at a dog daycare, and there's one thing I'd like to add. YOU WILL NEED TO TRAIN YOUR DOG. It sounds obvious, but we have so many owners who think that their dog will just magically become behaved as it grows up. That's not how it is. If you want your dog to stop jumping, if you want your dog to respond to its name, if you want your dog to listen to you, you have to put the time in. I don't know why people think their dog will just grow up and listen perfectly, and then they get upset and blame the dog when it's 3 years old and still jumping on everyone and destroying the house. That's not how it works. You need to put the time in to teach them.
TheSkyHazCloudz Really that must be bad how do you and the other workers there deal with it? Does it affect the other dogs there? since I’m assuming they didn’t bother with basic socialization. Do you keep it real with the owners and tell them how it is?
My dog was abandoned at the city shelter at 4yo by his first family (who had had him since he was a puppy) for being poorly trained and badly socialized to dogs and humans. I’ve had him 3 years and we’ve made some progress, but some things are still really rough, especially leash walking and dog reactivity. We’ll probably be working for the rest of his life to undo the damage. He’s still a great little buddy to me, but he’s definitely not an easy dog, and a lot of it could have been avoided with proper socialization when he was a puppy.
@@Hi-id4zb Sorry, I never saw this somehow. Yes, we are honest with them about their dog's behavior, but usually they are in denial and will fight with us about it (even if what we say to them is exactly what they said to us during their dog's evaluation when asked about behavioral concerns). We don't put dogs who can't handle socialization in social situations, but sometimes the owners will fight us on that, too.
Yes. I had have my puppy for 4 months now. He is 8 months. And he only knows sit, lay down, and he responds to his name, he doesn’t get out of his crate until I say “out” and he doesn’t go in his crate until I say “go home” But he still jumps and everything. So we are planning on get him trained at petsmart.
This cannot be emphasized enough. My grandma has five dogs that she never bothered training. One of them being a terrier (though I don't remember what kind) that was particularly fiery. A few years ago he started a fight with my cocker spaniel. He ended up with a missing tooth, my dog ended up with a torn eye, and the whole thing was completely avoidable. Train. Your. Dogs.
Dogs generally don't want or should meet a lot of different dogs. If they meet the other dog at least once a week it's okay, but generally it causes behavioural issues. When dogs "greet" each other they check if the other is dangerous to their owner. When dogs "play" they figure out how strong the other is and if they need to protect their human. An exception are siblings and dogs that live in the same family. If dogs are allowed or even encouraged to "greet" each other while on a leash, they tend to become insecure, which is a major cause for agression. Of course not every dog is like that, but a vasy majority of dogs behave like that. But yes, they should genetally be vaccinated. That's always a good idea.
Brook Dumbledore that is not true, dogs need to socialize or it causes aggression, socializing does not cause aggression it PREVENTS aggression usually. The more you socialize a dog the more accustomed it becomes to other dogs which makes it less likely to develop behavioural issues!
This was the video that made me subscribe. Having a puppy (or a kitten!) is a HUGE commitment. They depend on you for every little thing, and you have to be there for them. My sister worked at a shelter for years, and at least once a week she would come home crying over an animal who had been abandoned by people who didn't understand this. There's more to owning a pet than cuteness and cuddles. Thank you, Dr. Mike, for the honesty and the instructions. Well done!👍😀
Absolutely! While the crate itself is a nice separate place for the pup, most of them prefer being able to hide within "their" space. Same with kitties!
My Bed is high enough for my cutie to walk under there and he loves it! Everytime Im a bit longer in the bathroom, he sneaks (for some reason) in my room. He has a beautiful doggie bed and a blanket
Yes!! As an assistance dog trainer, Animal assisted interventions specialist and psychologist I can say that this is so important for families with a member with disability. So many families turn to me for help because someone told them to get a pup and now they have a huge problem at their homes because they did not know/didn't research what to expect and what it would mean. I truly believe that a pup/dog can bring so much to these families, but it's important to think and make informed decisions (specially involving an Animal). Thanks for this video
Ikr! Many people just get a dog because it's cute and not because of it's personality. Or these parents who get a dog for their kids as a present for christmas. It's really irresponsible and many of those dogs cause problems since they aren't treated right. People that get a dog just to cuddle it and walk it for like 15 mins daily truly disgusts me. Many of those dogs land in shelters and it's just so sad to see those poor animals suffer because their owners didn't do enough research.
Puppy depression is something I had and was not aware that such thing even existed! 2 weeks later I got used to Cooper, he got used to me and we had the best time ever till his last day. I always recommend for beginners to host a dog (for instance, from shelter) for a week, 2 weeks, month or so. You give them love and attention they so desparately need and as a bonus, you get an understanding what it is to have a dog 🐶
I had kitty depression if that is a thing ^^ It lasted maybe a month and I was feeling so guilty for having those feelings at all. Since then I am in loove with my cat :) The fact that this has a name makes me feel kind of relieved !
You must be some kind of superhuman to both be a doctor (I guess long work days), be healthy and exercise, have a youtube channel AND have enough time for your dogs
No, he has the same 24 hours in the day. He likely uses money for dog walking services. He has good time management skills. He likely delegates some tasks to other people. He's highly likely not doing this all on his own. He could dress up as a superhero, cape and all. Yeah, please do.
I really loved this no-BS video on some of the struggles and realities of getting a puppy. And it was really well-presented too. Thank you from me and Punky (my 12-week-old French bulldog) in Sydney, Australia.
As a vet tech, I agree with all of these. Also the part where he researched Newfies before getting one? That's what everybody should do before getting a breed they want, and keep in mind there's still might be surprises. The dryer thing: If you going to use the hairdryer do it on the cold setting. Your pup will appreciate it. BTW: CRATE TRAINING CRATE TRAINING CRATE TRAINING
True, but not all dogs like crates or have that inate den drive. My 2 fucking despise being contained, we tried EVERYTHING from 8wks old. They both just got anxiety to the point of screaming and ripping their own skin off! The second we let them out, they ran over, made a special space of their own and stay there without the need for a crate. They are also 100% safe in the house while we're not home. Doggy doors are a thing for ppl with houses and its a part of being a responsible pet owner to "baby proof" your house and yard. Its not hard, and cages aren't necesary for a happy healthy dog.
@@wibblewobble489 Same, my dog literally wrecked his crate by pulling at the bars with his teeth. He'd done so much damage we had to literally cut the door off so we could let him out, and then his bedding had blood on it from the damage to his gums. Threw the crate out and never looked back.
Who knew that one year after you posted this vid that I'll come here to watch again as part of my research in preparation for adopting a puppy/dog soon! A little sad because a dog I applied for was also named Bear but my application was declined, but still glad you made the extra effort to share such helpful tips, Doc!
Aloha Paradise Girls yeah you see bear doesn’t have much hair or if any on his shirt, it’s huskies that shed. Like a ton I have one and I’d be surprised if I didn’t get hair on my clothes.
Maybe there's someone else left in the house, like a friend or family who lives with him and Knows the dogs well and take care of them while he's at work
As a dog trainer, I’m so glad you did this video! People just want to think about the cute puppy, the fun times, and the positive things…which is great! They just need to understand there is another side to owning a puppy too and be prepared. You have a Husky and a Newfie so you understand the hair issue. Lol! 🤣 I have 2 huskies (plus 2 Catahoulas) and everything I own is covered in husky hair. I explain they’re like PigPen from Snoopy except instead of a dirt cloud, it’s husky hair. We joke about having to shave our vehicle when we need to clean it cuz there’s so much hair. Lol!
The last bit when bear was breathing in, it was a reverse sneeze. Some dogs have those ,if it happens again just gently put your hand in his noozle and keep his mouth close. It will eventually go away.
Heya Dr. Mike!!! YES YES YES!!! I worked in the vet field before becoming disabled, & if there was one thing I could make clients always do before getting a pup is RESEARCH!!! So many people choose a breed that looks good to them, without considering energy levels, how hard it is to train the breed, how the breed typically interacts with children or other pets, or health risks that come with that breed... For example, bulldogs are cute, but they come with a huge risk of health issues throughout their life... Also, finances are a another good point that you brought up... Typically, we see owners put together the money to get the pet, but not leave any left over for care after the purchase... Especially if they're buying from a breeder (which I usually discourage, but that's a personal thing)... If you're getting a pet from a breeder, they won't be spayed/neutered, vaccinated (sometimes), microchipped, etc. & all of those things add up, so one piece of advice that I've heard that's great, is set aside puppy funds of about $1,500 before you get the pet & put a certain amount away every month after you get the pet... This can help with both expected & unexpected costs!!! Thank you, again, Dr. Mike, for bringing this up, it's such an important topic for people to understand!!! 🖤🖤🖤 ~Casey
I overheard a conversation in a pet store between a mother and daughter and the owner of the shop. They told him that they were picking up a kitten later that day from a breeder and asked what they would need. The shop owner told them about the need for medication to prevent fleas, ticks and worms. But after hearing the price of these medications, the woman said she wasn't going to do that, because it was too expensive. The shop owner again explained why this is so important, not just for the health of the cat but also for the humans they interact with, but she still refused. If you don't have the money (or don't want to spend the money) needed to give an animal the care it needs, you really shouldn't own a pet.
Woah! You are really multitalented. Being a doctor u must be very busy but you go to gym, play with your dog, have ur own you tube channel. how can u manage all of them together.👏????????????
I know this video was posted forever ago, but I am in veterinary medicine and was wondering if you had ever considered doing a video with a veterinarian. Kind of comparing and contrasting your professions or having them join you in one of your response to questions videos. Btw adore your videos and find them fascinating from a medical standpoint.
OMG Dr. cutie pie, he has gotten so big and even more adorable! It's unfortunate that so many people believe that living with animals is all fun and games and then want to return them when they see how real it is. I have 4 cats and I personally feel that anything I have to deal with is worth what I get from having them in my life, and admittedly, I think I get more from having them than they do from me. Like the part where you are sitting on the sofa with both of their heads in your lap. PRICELESS! I love when my cats come and pile on or around me. People who live without animals are truly missing out on one of the most beautiful things life has to offer :-)
There was youtuber called Isaiah and he made video where he phone calls people to subscribe to PewDiePie, one granny said "I don't have any cutie pie" haha
This video is perfect and informative for first time and non first time puppy owners, short, interesting and doesn’t include 20 extra minutes of information that you’re just going to forget the next day. Thank you for posting ❤
I don’t necessarily agree with the exercise bits. When they’re young their bodies are still fragile and growing. It can actually hurt your dog if you give more exercise than advised given whatever age they are. After (for big dogs, less for small dogs) about 2 yrs they should be good to go for as much as can be given :)
I think that when he says walks every few hours he's meaning more for toileting purposes? I have a fully fenced garden, so my dog doesn't need walks to pee/poop, but if you don't have a safe garden then that's why the regular 'walks' are needed.
Alannah Bart Yes especially with larger breeds as they are more prone to getting joint problems. The same thing goes for stairs. Larger dogs shouldn't walk up or down stairs until they are about a year old and smaller dogs when they are 6 months
I had dog depression when I first got my dog... BUT not anymore. I love him. He's an Australian kelpie(/maybe german Shepard too) we got him at a shelter when he was 6 months and boy was he crazy. He peed on my bed three times. Hahaha but we started having a routine and training which really helped. I don't regret getting my dog Hades one bit
The struggle with slobber is so real, especially with Newfs! I've had one (Baby, who I still love to pieces and miss like crazy!), and we would get slobber hanging off of our ceilings! It just became part of the house's decor! 😜
I got my bichon at 3 months. She has TWO crates (one for travel and one for her crate training). She loves them both. She is groomed twice a week during winter and every week during summer. I did a lot of research. She is 19 months old. I love her to pieces, but it is hard work. Always do obedience training. Positive reinforcement and tonnes of patience is key. Good luck folks ❤️
Hi Doctor Mike!!! 🤗 Bear is sooo handsome... I think he gets it from you! 🤣 I currently have a 10 week old German Shepard mix named Myles he came from the hurricane in Houston and traveled all of the miles to get here.... so I named him Myles. You are so right about vet bills currently he is dealing with a terrible stomach virus and all together I’ve spent over 400 bucks on treatments and medicines and probiotics and chicken and rice for his bland diet.. He definitely is a handful but I am indeed in love. He has helped me with debilitating depression.. he makes me go outside with him, play with him which makes me laugh and smile so he is quit the blessing(except for when he bites).. and not to mention the 20 second cuddling session is indeed my favorite part of the day. 😍❤️ hope your well Doctor Mike, love your videos! ❤️💖
Great vid, Dr. Mike. Everything you said was on point. My pets (2y.o. mom and pup) are Labrador Mix and I love how gentle, friendly, and intelligent they are. Feel like they're my children almost. It's really a long-term commitment. Vet expenses often make me wanna cry, though. ehehe. Maybe in the next few years I'll finally get a Husky pup. Beautiful and smart like Roxy
Doctor Mike and Bear are the match made in heaven ! Just like bread and butter , always together ! I’m just really really delighted that my mum agreed to get me a pup after I go in the Med school !!!!! This is one of the happiest news ever !!!!!
This question was asked several times on this and other dog-videos and was officially never answered. I'd be even more interessting to learn how somebody with a full-time-job can provide decent conditions for a dog.
Betzy Betzy + I have a full-time job and am in school. I have a 3 year old lab. He's awesome. He goes on 2, 1 hour walks a day. 1 by a dog walker in the mornings and the other by me in the evening and we play, etc and on the weekends we're out all the time. Dog parks, running etc. It can be done, just with some help. 😊
There are agencies that do dog walking for when you're away. Also, if you have kids in your neighborhood who cant have their own pet you can always ask their parents if they can help with yours.
I’d recommend getting a dog from the pound. I got my current dog from the pound when he was about 3. He’s the most loyal dog I’ve ever owned and my best friend. He loves to fish, hunt for lizards, roaches rats and mice. He also catches flies. If you have a toddler who throws food on the ground, dogs are perfect. My wife appreciates that a lot. Save a life, your dog will love you more and you will love yourself more.
I have a labrador and it was the best gift ever made to myself. I walk him nomatter the weather, we play inside and outside, we go to the park everyday. It is a commitment and you have to be ready for everything that may come up health wise.
As a 32 year old male I’ve did college and graduate school. I’m an educator, I have commitments and stuff...and I still don’t feel like I’m prepared for a dog. Animals in general are such a huge HUGE responsibility that I can’t even phantom having to care for one alone. 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ Great topic and great video. #WeNeedMoreDrMikeInRunningPants

P.S. You obviously know that these are two separate videos... 🙈😭👌💖👀
Planning to adopt a dog in the next couple of months and this is where I started my research! I have two adult dogs already, but it’s been 7 years since they were pups. Great way to get a quick refresher!
Eternal I love goldens! Great pet for beginners, we once had one when I was like, three but we had to give him away because my dad abused him sometimes...
Just rescued mine and its the first time im owning one, this day it was so sick i didn't think she would make it to the next morning, its been about a week now and it seems she is back to her normal self, im still learning a lot about dogs so high five to you❤😊😊
Well I know doctor Mike is a primary care so he generally doesn't have that long shifts so I can't talk for him. But let me tell you as a ER doctor. It gets hectic. Very hectic. Between balancing work, friends, free time, my dog and my fiancé it gets tough. But I manage and the best feeling in the world is coming home after a long shift to cuddle up with my hubby and my dog on the couch even though Athena my dog generally isn't allowed on the cough.
I own a Newfie and he is 4. We definitely researched not only cost but also focused on researching temperament as I needed a dog that was chill since I struggle with Fibromyalgia and Lyme disease and one of our daughters is autistic. Sure he drools, the cost of caring for him is a lot, and there is always hair EVERYWHERE, but Chewy is the best furball EVER!
While your vet may have told you to use it, I doubt they told you to use only that. Head and shoulders has been proven to help certain skin health conditions when used but that it should not be what is used regularly on your dog. Dog skin is much more sensitive than human skin and many human shampoos and conditioners can be harmful to your pet.
@@kayr.9604 That is exactly what my Vet told me to do. I'm pretty sure he knows know more about my dog and his grass allergies than you do. You need to relax, I have multiple Vets in my family and they all said the same thing. H&S (orginial only)is fine for him. Heck one of my uncles is even famous for developing some eye surgery for dogs. No where did I recommend other people use H&S for their dogs. You do you.
For my last dog, I spent $4K on each surgery when my dog tore her ACL on each hind leg. Then I spent $5K on cancer treatment shortly before my dog died at the age of 11. Fortunately, I had expensive Pet Insurance which paid for 70% of the cost of the vet bill. Having a pet can truly be expensive but it's worth it!
In the United States, veterinary service can be very expensive depending on the procedure therefore it is advantageous to have pet insurance to offset the cost. Pet insurance is basically medical insurance for your pet. I would never want to euthanize my dog because I couldn't afford her surgery to save her life. Towards the end of my dog's life, I was paying $80 per month on pet insurance. This may sound expensive but my dog's cancer treatment cost over $5K and the pet insurance covered most of it.
We have a third dog now because a friend of ours got a husky/Gshepard dog without doing research first. They were so unprepared for the sheer insanity that is this dog, it's astounding. Thank you for gently educating people about dog ownership.
I've loved your content since I first discovered the channel months ago but had missed this video for some reason. Even more respect now! People should always be mindful and conscious when choosing to be responsible for a life. Cheerios from an ex med student xD keep up the informative and interesting content, brother much love
As someone who trained in animal science it's good to see someone who really did their research. The special dog dryer is a must for dogs like Bear with thick long fur, I wouldn't recommend one for all types of dog but you are doing right by Bear making sure he isn't left with wet skin as that can lead to all sorts of skin problems.
What you *must know* before meeting *Dr Mike* ? 0. Don't faint(do that [he's a doctor]) 1.Give him a hug(okay! maybe ask😁) 2.He want to touch million lives with his medical advice(ask him for any medical query) 🙋 3.He is a goofball (chrish it)(he is my kind of wierd) 🙃 3.Loves dog and travelling(share your thoughts) 4. *ty delayesh' moy mir yarche* (learn lil russian)😁 5. Ask how is roxy and bear(don't creep him out. 😂😂😂) and pet her if she's present 6. You got to love his *goofy dance* 7. His nickname is Misha(in russian)
Love your newfie videos with Bear! I've got a Newfie service dog, myself. The drool struggle is real (so are the vet visit struggles - I gotta keep my doggo in tip top shape as long as possible - he's almost 7 now and starting to show his age so he can't work as much and he's getting sick and injured more often from routine things that he just can't handle as much anymore even though he wants to do them... it's sooo expensive. I just had to spend over $300 for an emergency vet visit for a bad ear infection which I had to try to treat it myself and wait until it got bad enough for an emergency visit due to the vet only doing essential services and no regular visits due to the pandemic.)
how can anyone dislike this video? . I had a retreiver which stayed with me for 12 long years and died due to kidney failure . I miss him and really need a pet again . TRUST ME, PUPPIES TEACH YOU TO BE CARING ,LOVING AND PATIENT . YOU LOVE THEM AND THEY LOVE YOU BACK ,THAT TOO A LOT MORE .
I'm a big believer in adopting a dog. IMO, I'd go with the yearling/young adult. They're set as far as size go, can hold their bladder/bowels much longer, you get a very good idea of what their temperment is going to be and their immune system system is developed. For me, yearlings are absolute gold......
I really did get puppy depression it was awful as I was in the middle of my nursing training thankfully my mum and dad fell in love with her and now look after her I still love my doggy 💗
Nope my cat is 95% trained at 2 months, once you relise what having and training a kitten requires you wont want a cat at all, im starting to think it is mandatory because all the other cats and her sister that are not trained are significantly more unhealthy then her and we have a really tight bond, not like any other cat ive ever had
I own a puppy in my dreams.... its free and it changes every night.... sometimes i get a dragon and it eats me but i wake up breathing hard... fun stuff
That's why I want a dog
That's why I want one because I feel like it would really help!
I still havent got a puppy for about 5 years now :(

He's a doctor, he's charming, he's handsome and he loves dogs. Is there something you don't do well Dr. Mike?
Right ? Lol
yeah way too perfect! I bet he has some cob webs, maybe he's a vegan? or worse one of those split billers that only pays his portions down to the cents!
dan le + 😆😆😆 awe, hope not
dan le yeah because standing up against the blind support of mass torture, rape and murder of animals (some more intelligent than this puppy) would make him a horrible person, thank God he’s not vegan
kelly 10012 great you are defending yourself, so you should.
Same my puppy die too but im getting one today or Tommorw
Same. After 8 or 9 months, I just had to get another dog. Not the same as the one I lost but adorable just the same.
@@theropesofrenovation honestly your dog would want you to save another little dog and give it a good life just like you did that dog
My doggo died almost 2 years ago. I rescued a puppy today, which brought me here.
🥰💞
Your other video about Bear is like " YES GO GET A DOG ITS GOOD FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH"
This video is like "YOU MIGHT WANT TO RETHINK GETTING A DOG BRO"
This video is about getting and raising a PUPPY. The other was about getting a dog in general. Two different subjects.
Randeman actually they are the same...
This video is just trying to help people understand that a dog/puppy is a lot of work that is necessary. I would hate to see a dog get obese, violent, etc because someone wanted a dog just because it's cute and they wanted to cuddle with it.
Dogs are disgusting and expensive to own. People are much better adopting a child and raising him/her.
Xavier Anderson you are disgusting
I can't look after myself at 18, let alone a little pup
Definitely a good sign that a puppy is not right for you now =]
Doctor Mike Yeahh exactly!! 🙈
Although, I really do want one! :)
It's okay...I can relate as well :(
Good job acknowledging and admitting that though! That will help you wait until you're ready, and therefore make you a better dog owner
Haha me too! I don't own any pet and never will for this reason 😂

Train. Your. Dogs.
That was on point from A to Z, so simply and logically spoken about. And see Roxy and Bear in one video was adorable 😍
Also on the subject of walking puppies, your puppy shouln't be socializing with other dogs outside until it's fully vaccinated.
Ahaha dogs should get vaccinated and so should your children lmao
Brook Dumbledore that is not true, dogs need to socialize or it causes aggression, socializing does not cause aggression it PREVENTS aggression usually. The more you socialize a dog the more accustomed it becomes to other dogs which makes it less likely to develop behavioural issues!
Brook Dumbledore dogs are also social creatures!
JennyTheOtome OwO ye so get him vaccinated
Bear's name suits him, lol.

YO MIKE. Bear will love his cage home even more if you drape a blanket or something similar over the top. Dogs like cave-like homes.
Absolutely! While the crate itself is a nice separate place for the pup, most of them prefer being able to hide within "their" space. Same with kitties!
I do this for all 3 of my dogs
Yes! I’ve always done that with my dogs - put a sheet over it at night.
You guys make me think i'm a dog
My Bed is high enough for my cutie to walk under there and he loves it! Everytime Im a bit longer in the bathroom, he sneaks (for some reason) in my room. He has a beautiful doggie bed and a blanket

Only in 8 weeks!!!

Bear is actually a bear, look at him, first time i saw, he was like a baby bear, and now, MONSTER BEAR !!!!
BTW:
CRATE TRAINING
CRATE TRAINING
CRATE TRAINING

Threw the crate out and never looked back.

during the outro- notice the fur on his shirt. Puppies shed. A lot.
Not all

hypoallergenic dogs (if you don’t know, dogs with hair instead of fur) don’t shed, as well as hairless dogs
Mike: If you work 8 hour days maybe a puppy isn’t for you
Also Mike: is a doctor and can work for 24 hours straight
Maybe he doesnt work at a hospital but has his own practice. Not every doctor works 70 hour work weeks.
Maybe there's someone else left in the house, like a friend or family who lives with him and Knows the dogs well and take care of them while he's at work
not everyone follows their own advice, even doctors. :)
Also Mike : is a doctor and can afford to pay someone to attend to puppy while he works
He said he co-owns Bear with his dad, so he probably takes care of him when Mike is working longer days

~Casey

OMG Dr. cutie pie, he has gotten so big and even more adorable!

Tysm for this my mom is getting our family a new puppy and this was needed! Sending this to the family group chat!
Yep! When they're puppies they should get frequent but short walks, but when they're older they should get frequent long walks!
The video is funny. I like the cinematography too
Owning a Newfie is Ruff.....
It really is
I got my bichon at 3 months.

8 hour work day... Um, Mike... You're a doctor, how do you walk him when working?
Fajer njr apparently he takes his dog to work or maybe he has a dog sitter?
Depends...sometimes someone watches/walks bear for me, sometimes work schedule is flexible, and occasionally he does make the trip with me =]
This question was asked several times on this and other dog-videos and was officially never answered.
I have a pitbull mastiff & he drools A TON
As a 32 year old male I’ve did college and graduate school. I’m an educator, I have commitments and stuff...and I still don’t feel like I’m prepared for a dog. I am curious to know, as a doctor, how do you manage your time ? Saving lives and taking care of adorable dogs ! and btw, great videos !
Bear just playing with the hairdryer made me smile
I own a Newfie and he is 4. We definitely researched not only cost but also focused on researching temperament as I needed a dog that was chill since I struggle with Fibromyalgia and Lyme disease and one of our daughters is autistic. Sure he drools, the cost of caring for him is a lot, and there is always hair EVERYWHERE, but Chewy is the best furball EVER!
Dr. Mike: "No to human shampoos..."
My Vet: "Use Head & Shoulders."
Me: ...
😂😂😂
While your vet may have told you to use it, I doubt they told you to use only that. Head and shoulders has been proven to help certain skin health conditions when used but that it should not be what is used regularly on your dog.
Dog skin is much more sensitive than human skin and many human shampoos and conditioners can be harmful to your pet.
I support Dr. Mike in this, and i am a veterinarian. No human shampoos for dogs! Most of them have perfume substances and others which are harmfull.
You do you.
He's very cute were did you get him
I would be finally getting a pup after a few days and this video is what I needed! Thank you doc
Yes if you have the means and you're ready to take care of it, having a dog is extremyl rewarding!
Pet insurance?
In the United States, veterinary service can be very expensive depending on the procedure therefore it is advantageous to have pet insurance to offset the cost. Pet insurance is basically medical insurance for your pet. I would never want to euthanize my dog because I couldn't afford her surgery to save her life. Towards the end of my dog's life, I was paying $80 per month on pet insurance. This may sound expensive but my dog's cancer treatment cost over $5K and the pet insurance covered most of it.
I laughed with that Jurassic Park reference. Never thought one of my fav childhood series would appear here 😂
We have a third dog now because a friend of ours got a husky/Gshepard dog without doing research first. They were so unprepared for the sheer insanity that is this dog, it's astounding. Thank you for gently educating people about dog ownership.
I have a puppy too. Thanks for the honesty
I've loved your content since I first discovered the channel months ago but had missed this video for some reason. Even more respect now! People should always be mindful and conscious when choosing to be responsible for a life.
Cheerios from an ex med student xD keep up the informative and interesting content, brother
much love
As someone who trained in animal science it's good to see someone who really did their research.
The special dog dryer is a must for dogs like Bear with thick long fur, I wouldn't recommend one for all types of dog but you are doing right by Bear making sure he isn't left with wet skin as that can lead to all sorts of skin problems.
What you *must know* before meeting *Dr Mike* ?

"training takes patience"
say that slowly and think about a med student in training.
Skye Halverson omfg that makes so much sense.
PFFFFFT
I am getting a new puppy in less then 30 days at 8 weeks and im so excited!!! I loved this.
I'm watching this 2 years later and all I can say is, I must say Bear is really huge now that he's older, like surprisingly huge.
I can't even take care of myself

I look a dog in the eyes and I can see that precious "humanity" most humans have lost.
Such amazing creatures!!!
I have dog depression I miss my toy poodle 🐩.
I'm a big believer in adopting a dog. IMO, I'd go with the yearling/young adult. They're set as far as size go, can hold their bladder/bowels much longer, you get a very good idea of what their temperment is going to be and their immune system system is developed. For me, yearlings are absolute gold......
Any tips I'm planning to get one
@@insertname942 I've adopted three AND I'm about to go to work so I'll have to get back to you on that...
I really did get puppy depression it was awful as I was in the middle of my nursing training thankfully my mum and dad fell in love with her and now look after her I still love my doggy 💗
Meanwhile cats basically do everything they want and are fine
yeah, but nobody OWNS a cat :D
Nope my cat is 95% trained at 2 months, once you relise what having and training a kitten requires you wont want a cat at all, im starting to think it is mandatory because all the other cats and her sister that are not trained are significantly more unhealthy then her and we have a really tight bond, not like any other cat ive ever had
@@kitten_582
How did you train your cat?
I would love if you can give some tips like what to do and what not to do.
@@kitten_582 Well dogs r far faster in training then a cat that's a fact their intellect lvl is high
But dogs r a lot moody as well
I own a puppy in my dreams.... its free and it changes every night.... sometimes i get a dragon and it eats me but i wake up breathing hard... fun stuff
😊 awww
Lol
Thank you for leaving your shirt in the natural state of having fur in your home! I think I have those sticky lint roller thingies everywhere!!
