I refuse to learn any music theory because I like the MYSTERY. Vai and Satriani aren't having any fun......cuz they treat music like plumbing. A banal science.
Back in my early 20's, I've been practicing classical and fingerstyle guitar every single day for multiple hours. I absolutely refused to strum chords and play popular stuff to which people can sing. During all those years, it only occurred 3 times that I've impressed a girl: 1. I was at a party and didn't know many people. Someone brought a guitar so I though "well, might as well do some practice while I'm here". I started playing Angelina by Tommy Emmanuel and a girl literally ran up to me from a 10m distance while exclaiming "omg, this guy can REALLY play!". She stayed until the end of the song, but I didn't get her later. Some guy with an emo haircut and piercings beat me to it lol. I did impress 2 random dudes though, hahaha... 2. I was playing classical guitar while riding a train home. Last seat in the last wagon, just playing some arrangements for my own enjoyment. At one station, in comes a girl, and although the train was almost empty, she sits right in front of me. She sat there for 45min while listening to me play, she didn't say a word and I didn't wanna start a conversation cuz at that point in my life I really didn't wanna waste my time on girls. Before she got of the train she said "Sorry to interrupt you, I just need to tell you that you are a really talented guitar player". I smiled, said "Thank you!" and kept on playing. Not sure if she was into me or not, but she sure was impressed. 3. While I was doing gymnastics I got injured so I sat on the bench. Next to me was a girl who also had an injury and had to rest there. We got into a conversation and I told her that I play the guitar. She asked me what kind of music I play, to which I just laughed and said "Just some fingerstyle stuff, no one ever recognizes the songs I play". So she said "Try me". I was like "Nah, no way you'd know. Some of them are even Japanese and even some guitarists don't know about them. Like, a dude called Kotaro Oshio for example. There's just no way that..." and she just exclaimed "OMG! You know about Kotaro Oshio?! Look up at the Evening Starts is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard on the guitar!". I was mindblown. That was one of the standard songs on my set list. Turns out she's a piano school graduate and was not only into classical music, but also into fingerstyle guitar artists, anime music and video game music, just like me. So she knew over half of the songs in my setlist. 10 years later we got married and now we have 4 lovely guitars, a healthy keyboard and a cute violin in our living room. :D

In my experience, the best way of learning is to learn the actual songs and never ever be satisfied with a "beginner" version. Just remember to actually work on unfamiliar techniques as you're learning a song. The best thing about this approach is that you're truly learning the songs you like instead of doing random exercises and learning "practice" songs. This way, I've made more progress in a year than in all the years before that. And you don't have to turn into a hermit to achieve good results. If you want to be the next Steve Vai, then you have no choice but to eat and sleep with your guitar, but being able to play the songs you like and play them well is not that hard. The problem is most people go for the easiest rendition of a song every time, so they never improve. I know, for I was one of them. Now I can easily play and sing like 20 songs at a party (which is not much compared to my friends' tracklists), but I do it well and get positive reactions every time. And I certainly get better reviews than those who can play a million songs, but have to whip out their phones with chords every time they play. If you're staring at your phone or your fretboard all the time, people lose interest in no time.
This was amazing in every way. And if some psycho wants to jam in C# minor, just tune down to C# standard and play your chords, wasy fix. except that your strings will be super flappy, but nobody will notice.

What he says about nobody remembering how you played is so true. I once sang two songs at a huge party and hammed it up big time. I thought they could all see the joke, but was treated with admiration and loud applause. Next day my buddy rewatched the video of it and said, “ You can’t sing,”. Lol. It’s all about attitude
Haha 😂Once I did something similar. Drunk on a work party grabed a guitar far away for most people and started playing lateraus intro. New guys comes to me and says "O wow you can play guitar. Wanna play with me I am a drummer". I said "No I can't. By sure why not". At this moment we have been palying togther for a year now and even got someone on vocals. This movie masr my day 😂
This video hits home 💀 Almost every college party I went to where someone played guitar, had no idea what they were doing. It was always disappointing, because I genuinely wanted to jam. I didn't know to many hits, as I spent most of my time learning jazz, metal, funk and punk. I had been taking lessons for a few years and was well accustomed to improv. All of that DID pay off when I was busking though! Other musicians would stop to jam! Just Sadly not many parties had decent players.
Man this takes me back to college. I'd be the fool taking lessons, practicing scales, learning songs that were not commercial. I would rip into my favourite Iron Maiden song while a dude would play G - Cadd9 - D and people's world would fall apart as they admired the greatest guitarist ever known. This is essentially the Ed Sheeran way to professional guitarology.
i have a suggestion, carry a couple of picks with you in your wallet/handbag or even your pocket; pulling out a random pick shows others that you are always prepared (it actually does come in handy tho lol). Another suggestion: if the guitar is in standard tuning (usually is hopefully), tune the low E string to drop D, and then boom you have a few more songs to play, and they see that you know at least one alternative tuning besides standard and half-step down
I ctrl f'd to find this comment. This video is essentially just a remake of that video. I got to the point where he talks about "learn one song" and I was like "I stg, if he plays Wonderwall..."
I appreciate the humor of great guitarists such as yourself, Mr. Dines, Stevie T, and Rob Scallon. Without you dudes, I would’ve given up years ago. Thanks 🖤🙏🏽
This was hilarious lol. Great video, Jared. It’s sad that people think that chicks will be all over you if you’re a good guitar player, but they want no part of it.
3:58 - “…Just throw in some percussive tapping.” Lulz! So true. I can’t tell you how many times people think someone is super amazing at guitar just because they started thumping on a guitar.
Besides my grandfather teaching me chords i taught myself. You dont need to pay for lessons. There are too many free outlets. Best thing to do is learn the basics and stop there. Just start playing once you have a good grasp on the fretboard, notes, chords and chord progression. Otherwise youll sound like everyone else.

Watching this with a terrible acoustic guitar at hand (bc i lost my electric) haven't played electric in over 7 months. This was soul crushing. Gonna go to a jam session tonight, i might reconsider and drink tile whitener instead.
Omg you killed it!! So happy to see you back!
The instructional video we all needed
He forgot the most important step.. call out others that are better than you because you think it's fake, so you can ruin someone's career!
This movie masr my day 😂
truely majestic piece of comedy
Jared's back!
Now all I need is a video of kmac2021!
great laugh here JD. nice one!! 😂😂
This video hits home 💀
Almost every college party I went to where someone played guitar, had no idea what they were doing.
I've listened to all 400 Buckethead albums
New vid. Congratz. I like the old stuff better tho.
You're a complete genius, man xD I couldn't love more how this ended up
I’ve missed Jared skits so much, oh my God, this is a breath of fresh air
i have a suggestion, carry a couple of picks with you in your wallet/handbag or even your pocket; pulling out a random pick shows others that you are always prepared (it actually does come in handy tho lol). Another suggestion: if the guitar is in standard tuning (usually is hopefully), tune the low E string to drop D, and then boom you have a few more songs to play, and they see that you know at least one alternative tuning besides standard and half-step down
honestly I just tune to drop D and play power chords and it works for me
That new Wounded Tricycle album is killer. But, I do like their old stuff better.
Make this a UA-cam ad.
That improv part was pretty clever
You are so talented and funny Jared! Love ya cousin!!! Keep up the awesome videos!!!!💞😆🫶👍💖🎸🥰🎶🎤💪❤
Im glad that Jared still posts once in a while
im so good at doing this, I even convinced myself I can play
Good advice, thanks for it. Ill be sure to execute this on my teacher, who also plays guitar
Old school college humor vibes. Reminds me of that old “how to play guitar to get laid” videos
I ctrl f'd to find this comment. This video is essentially just a remake of that video. I got to the point where he talks about "learn one song" and I was like "I stg, if he plays Wonderwall..."
Great to see you back!
If Jared did an entire show of overconfident players who don't practice, it would hit right in the heart of everyone who still does.
"Look at him...his rhythm is terrible...his technique....horrendous" Lmao
Today's Fact: The world's largest cat is the Siberian tiger, which can weigh up to 700 pounds.
Thank you for this information
Everyday you learn something new
@@laurikguitarcovers and I'm glad it was this today
Isn't it the liger - crossbreed between lion and tiger?
PSA of the decade, if not the century. Loving the tuxedo T, as well. One thing though? Who THE HELL would leave an acoustic Martin guitar unattended?
I appreciate the humor of great guitarists such as yourself, Mr. Dines, Stevie T, and Rob Scallon. Without you dudes, I would’ve given up years ago. Thanks 🖤🙏🏽
Learn how to do that flamenco strumming over an E major chord. Works every time.
This was hilarious lol. Great video, Jared. It’s sad that people think that chicks will be all over you if you’re a good guitar player, but they want no part of it.
Once upon a time, but it's too common now. The gig is up
You know I remember avoiding every F chord when I started. Saying “a difficult chord… like F”, I really felt that. 😂
What if the guitar is out of tune? 😂😂😂😂
Id love to think that JD actually had booze and pizza for the gang over to make this... Just... Do it more. Do it harder. With more confidence. Always "Bigger Hammer"
He did. He had cookies too.
bro this video is such a banger, "The guitarist is a territorial creature"
I can't unwatch that guitar's finish being pressed against that metal zipper ...it's too much for me
Awesome video nice to see Jared back
The buckethead line was gold. I love the bucket
I'd actually love to see the DJ video, too. Good stuff.
Jerry, my man, you are an actual music genius. Even if you weren't a musician, your understanding is way above average, and I'd bet you put most of it together as a lark, to amuse yourself and have a laugh. That, is how 5he music genius do. ❤️
This is gold!
Dude, the "Alcohol" and "C#m?!?!" took me out, that was such a great video.
“I like his old stuff better…I like their older stuff is better” haha!
I’m so glad I’m teaching myself, this is the kind of positive reinforcement I needed. 😁🕺🏼🤙🏽
Jarvis Dinetello, 😂 I can’t right now.
thank you bro, i missed these skits 😂
Your sincerity in this video makes it more humorous.
This was awesome. I barely play guitar, but I can fake the hell out of a keyboard solo! GREAT VIDEO!!!
I've been playing guitar for 15 years on and off, i am self taught and I mainly come up with my own stuff though i do try to learn other people's music to just to help learn new chords to further create my own songs.
I can confirm that some women like guitarists, in these 8 days since you have posted this video, i took all your advice and have pulled more women in a week than i have in my entire life. This really works! Thanks jared dines.
I didn't know I needed this! This is pure UA-cam Gold! Nailed it. Thanks!
Loved the end and was wondering what girls were into now; thought of DJs and got it right!
That was hillarious!
Maestro agressions (micro agressions), nice one...
"intonation!" has saved me many times while at Guitar Center
