    I am 71 years young. I gained a lot of weight in 2020-2022 when my husband was dying of cancer and all sweets were my comfort food. When he passed in 2022 I gave it all up but so I wouldn’t fail I allowed myself one sweet treat a week. I started walking and eating better, I’m now 70 lbs lighter and healthier. Still have one sweet treat a week 😊

      I understand about comfort food, after my mom died, I ate myself into obesity on comfort food. But I just kept feeling worse as I got fatter.
      It took me a few years to finally get off the junk food and to get back to a healthy BMI, but as you know, it's so worth it!

      Same thing. Complex carbohydrates are broken down into sugars inside the small intestine before being absorbed, so inside the body any complex carbohydrate is the same as eating sugar.

    I watched a video recently that said insulin resistance is behind fibromyalgia. I would argue that mine didn't start until my early 30's when I quit big pHARMA drugs cold turkey. I wasn't able to eat candy, fruit, or drink soda/juices (except gingerale, diet coke & cranberry juice) without an allergic reaction that caused my face, nose, & eyes to burn & sweat. It still happens over 10 yrs later but much less often. The worst part is body pain and restless legs. It has gotten so bad that I am willing to try to give up bread and sugar entirely. Thank you for this video! I highly recommend the glucose goddess Jessie (her channel is called Glucose Revolution) to anyone who wants a better understanding of what to avoid and why.

      I feel that seed oils are a big cause inflammation and fibromyalgia.
      Stay away from anything that is made with or fried in canola, corn, soy, and cotton seed oils.
      Stop all soda, drink water instead.
      Stick with whole foods and you will feel better.

      Many people have eliminated symptoms of a lot of things, including fibromyalgia, by going beef and water only as an elimination diet. Some end up sticking with it and stay carnivore. Others, once they feel better, start to add things back in, one at a time, to see what impacts it has on the body.

      I escaped a horrific "autoimmune" skin condition (all the ads on TV for "Skyrizi etc new ones all the time are for THIS though they don't say so) by fasting. Dr Valter Longo thinks this "re-sets" your immune system, it saved me after ALL MD interventions (oral, topical, injected steroids) had failed. Took 3 days then rotation diet sorted out what foods re-triggered symptoms (dairy gluten the worst) eggs and meat do too though I have worked small quantities of them back in, salmon/sardines/tuna/varieties of cod seem to be OK. If you want a healthy sweet try tea with honey I start every day with green tea/honey/lemon do other teas with honey later. Honey has benefits though some dispute this (the Monukka varieties especially good) only problem is "real" honey from domestic sources are getting more expensive all the time. I won't use honey from Vietnam or China they do not even regulate pesticides. Look for local regional providers you can buy from direct.

    I love sugar, but I know it's dangerous for my health, but I am cutting down, and eventually I will leave sugar once and for all

      I had a terrible time with cravings, but what helped me immensely was using the Glucose Goddess Food order hacks (protien for breakfast and veggie starters for other meals). Once I started doing that, it became much easier to adopt all of the other recommendations from functional medicine docs. I can now incorporate intermediate fasting without hunger, I am not tempted (too much) by sugar, and if I do indulge, I can much more easily stop. It's been such an effective change, and I don't feel deprived. But I did significantly cur down on all carbs and sugar other than veggie and some fruit.

    Sugar is definitely a killer in our society today. We have grown lazy, rely on easy fixes and don’t use common sense. Our mothers, grandmothers and back knew this all too well. Unfortunately, our generation relies on what is easiest but also damaging. Look at our youth…what a serious health issue.

      Don't be silly. Sugar is fine on its own. Every cell in the body needs it. The fat is the problem. It covers the cell and stops the cell, taking up the sugar, hence high blood sugar, and the pancreas never gets the single to stop producing insulin. Take the fat out, and your blood sugar will spike and go back down, which is totally normal. Who needs fat when you're fat, and when we are ripped, you need a minimum amount of fat for hormones. Sugar is energy. Do a glucose tolerance test, and you will fail. Carnivore and low is trash long term!

    When you bring up sugar/treats people conclude the argument by saying “ all things in moderation “ but I don’t want diabetes, cancer etc in moderation!

      problem is moderation is nearly impossible for the sugar addicted. There's a reason a baby's 1st taste of sugar causes a look of surprised euphoria, it's because it hits the pleasure center so hard in your brain that it easily becomes addictive

      I think what got me off sugar was a shock revelation on how much my fitness declined, apart from that all I can say is there must have been divine help because I’m not smart or strong enough to break such a bond

    I read every label on my food sources and am trying to eliminate sugar, seed oils and artificial flavorings and colors. I make my own salad dressings and mayonnaise. I try to eat only Whole Foods-not processed foods. Sugar is in almost all processed foods! Start reading the labels of ingredients and you will be shocked to discover what you are putting into your body. I have seriously cut down on sugar and plan to continue this lifestyle.

      Any complex carbohydrate is broken down in the small intestine into sugars before being absorbed. The body knows no difference between eating a piece of whole wheat bread or eating pure sugar.
      So if you really want to dump sugar, you have to dump all carbohydrates. The body doesn't need exogenous carbohydrates to begin with, the liver makes whatever is needed.

      I have also dumped carbohydrates. Now and then I will eat 1 slice of bread, but only 1 slice. Carbs are not a regular part of my diet.

    I used to work one of food industry and I was shocked to see how much sugar is added to our food it’s really cruel to play with unaware people. I think we have to avoid direct sugar consumption to compensate the hidden one.

    I eliminated sugar/carbohydrates for 10 days prior to starting intermittent fasting. I at regular meals, just eliminated the above. Paved the way to the fasting program.

      @@danielgray1782- who cares if someone would fail a glucose tolerance test? If you have to take one, eat a few carbs beforehand. Dr. Ben Bikman talks about this, and how we don’t lose the ability to process carbs. Sugar IS the problem and the sugar industry knew this when they paid Harvard researchers to say the problem was fat and cholesterol. Even the sugar industry knows it’s sugar. How come you don’t? The fats that contribute to insulin resistance are the seed/vegetable oils. Saturated animal fats are necessary and great for the health of hormones, brain, skin, and cells, and you do not know what the hell you are talking about.

      Sugar is WAY more addictive. Coke is nasty. For similar but better results, see a dentist. You get the bad taste, numbing effects, and raised adrenaline but clean and fixed teeth at the same time.😁

      If I haven't had sugar in a while and eat something with sugar, I feel like I did drugs - I get a rush, feel lightheaded and woozy. It's like when drug addicts relapse after detoxing. They overdose on an amount that they could previously handle.

    I started a mediterranean diet over 20 years ago and still follow it today when I was having gut issues. I'm now in my 60's and still follow it. I recognized back then the dangers of sugar. ⚕️🏥👨‍⚕️⚖️

      @@beverleymason9038- you may want to check your blood glucose after eating a banana. Are you eating it alone, as a snack (which isn’t a good idea), or as more of a dessert (it has less of an impact, but still may not be good if you’re insulin resistant)?

    Since finding out that I am sucrose intolerant (only this past December), I've gone on a strict low sucrose diet. The weight literally fell off. My diet is so much healthier and I feel great. I'm going to be even more strict this summer.

      Google low sucrose diet. There is plenty of information. But I downloaded the pdf from Baylor Scott & White Health. Basically no white sugar or white flour whatsoever. I follow the list of foods that I can eat rather than focus on the food I can't. Whole grains only. I also try to stay away from gluten. My gastroenterologist also wants me to stay away from dairy, so I use unsweetened nut milk yogurt. Fruits are the more basic low acid type. Honey is the least processed but higher glycemic. Agave is slightly more processed but low glycemic. Meats and eggs are OK. Nothing processed. Lower salt. I feel better. And if I do eat the foods I shouldn't eat, my gi symptoms come back.

    I had two strokes and I love sugar. But after that I use only a half teaspoon of sugar , and don't use spicy chicken and feel must healthy and I'm 74 know and still working ,I can only praise God for his blessings

    Im prepping for my first 10Day Detox and am looking forward to the outcome! I am very worried about the "food" kids are being fed at schools. I've seen the inventory list of what gets delivered and it's GRIM! Why is the govt taking over feeding children and outsourcing to the lowest bidder which is providing toxic products. It's gross.

It is not our sweet tooth, it is lack of knowledge that makes people eat these bad foods… or maybe they just don’t care if they get diabetes, high blood pressure, brain issues…

    What can we do as consumers to help you in advocating not to use sugar in all our foods, even to a point of banning it because it is the main culprit of majority of diseases?     What about sourdough bread made with organic unbleached flour? My understanding is that it is a prebiotic.

      It's good but it's high in Sodium which breaks down in Sugar and is hard for your liver to process. Once in awhile is good.

    I had high cholesterol. I stopped eating sugar, processed carbs,and seed oils. Cholesterol is normal range now.

    I have been on a low carb, high fat, no sugar, OMAD, IF 16:8 regime for almost a month now. I drink water and coffee (just cream). I don't consume prepackaged foods and prepare only fresh meats, non starchy veggies, and dairy products like cream cheese, cheese, heavy whipping cream, etc. I average 5 miles per day in walking and steps. I ordered a new bathroom scale because the one I have is cheap and gives wildly fluctuating numbers, so I can't tell if I've really lost weight or not. I take the following supplements: magnesium, St Johns Wort, Gingko Biloba, SAmE, Garcinia Camodian, B12, elderberry, Collagen powder, and a homepathic immune support tincture. I feel absolutely no different than I did a month ago. My fatigue, joint pain/stiffness, gas and bloating after every meal is still present. What gives?

      Hormone needs impacting metabolism are hugely different between men and women and impact when and what we should be eating. Check out Dr Mindy Pelz, and there's an interview between these two. May help you shift out of a pattern that's not working, and how to reset.

      We're all different, so sometimes it's just a matter of cutting out things till you find the culprit. For example, I kept hearing how flax seed is a great health food, so I started adding it to my oatmeal. Oops, not a health food for me - it caused projectile vomiting. Another one was dairy, after much trial and error I realized it was the cause of my migraines. Not common, but there you go. Good luck on your continuing health journey!

      @rozieglow9694 Oh my! Flax seed I've heard is good but wow. That's a tough way to find out you can't tolerate it.
      I suspect my issue may be my fat intake. Im high fat diet with my caloric ceiling at 1k. I'll try dropping my caloric intake to 600/ day and only do meat and see what that gets me. It may be the high fat in my dairy products.

    Hi, I just found your channel and wanted to say thank you for sharing with us and I would like to add... We in the United States Of America are being poisoned in everything from food to medicine etc so we can only do so much to keep ourselves healthy unless we start making our own food meaning ***gardens and slaughtering our own meat*** then we would have a fighting chance!!!! And to live in the true sense of being healthy!!! So that is why we are having so many problems with our health!!!!! Conspiracy theory... I think not I am just calling it like I see it.     It's sad but this country has because all about money so don't expect the government to change anything because of how many politicians have their hands in big pharma. There is so much money in prescribing drugs to fix a problem.

    I agree cane sugar is a problem. But what i want to understand is why is it more inflammatory than fruit juice and honey when all three are 'naturally' sourced? I want to understand the science and physiological reason.

      I think it is because it begins as a sugar cane stalk and is burned down to a tiny amount that ends up being very strong; and it has been compared to heroin. My guess is that this gives it more potent properties. Just my educated guess.

    What about organic 100% whole wheat/whole grain bread? Is it as bad for you as refined white bread?

      Basically it's all the same. Wheat is a type of grain. Those are pretty much synonyms. It may sound healthier because of the labeling , but there is almost no difference how your body will process it, whether it's whole wheat or whole grain. Food companies are using the word organic very loosely, so that term has slowly lost meaning throughout time. Most bread is made from white flour, which will spike your blood sugar just as much as, if not more ,than table sugar . So just try to avoid it as much as possible . And in general when shopping for foods, focus more on the ingredient list instead of labels on the front because labels are very deceptive to the average consumer

    Ignorance plus addiction to these toxic foods are encouraged by an ultra powerful industry ( or industries) . It’s a real ( life and death) war . I have the utmost respect for you and dr Rob Lustig who’s doing what no one dared to do in the face of these savage and merciless industries ( the Food, the Pharma, the Agriculture etc) who wage this War together protected by God knows who !

    How was this breakfast this morning: Homemade raw, grass fed cow's milk yogurt, organic dates and mixed un roasted nuts? I need to know three dimensionally if I am on the right track. I do understand that I'm not a cow, and way beyond when any animal has milk. But wonder about yogurt unsweetened. Sometimes this news is so depressing, and to have some options mentioned, ie meal examples would be a major help to me. AND will say how much I am learning, and how grateful I am for finding you.

      Sounds like a great breakfast. I eat organic unsweetened yogurt every day. Just don’t have too many dates because they are high in sugar. Nuts are fine, but high in calories so don’t overdo on the nuts unless you are trying to gain weight.

    Love you Mark, but I disagree with you on phytoestrogens & soy (flax, and other high phytoestrogen foods)... soy, etc. absolutely can affect a person's estrogen level - I KNOW about it FIRST HAND!!!

I was post-menopausal about 10-12 years ago, but was eating soy daily- and developed swollen breasts and a somewhat crampy abdomen - like I was getting my period - which I clearly was not. That was soy. I removed it from my diet and those symptoms faded away. Yes, I would eat soy once in a blue moon and not expect any negative response, but never would I eat it, flax, or any other super duper high phytoestrogen-containing food more than that. Having said this, I realize not everyone is the same - but it's something that people should be aware of.

      I really appreciate your taking the time to reply as this has been an area of confusion for me for a long time. I too am very sensitive and the first time I took flaxseed I had postmenopausal spotting! But to be honest, I didn’t know if this ‘natural’ estrogen was a good thing or not, especially since I have had so much suffering related to hormonal balances. I thought maybe I needed the estrogen . I’m 57 now. Related to this video, I cannot touch sugar. It is like poison to my system! Thank you again for your kind reply to me, a stranger!

      Flax totally messes me up. Within 30 minutes of eating anything with flax in it, I start sweating like crazy and feel like I'm going to pass out. Flackers (flaxseed crackers) are the worst. It took me a while to figure out what was going on, but now that I know, I completely avoid flax.

      Type 2 and Hypoglycemia are the hardest to work on. What type 2's can't have, Hypoglycemia parents need, but the only thing that affects both is Refined Sugar and that's it. We all have to Label read and ingredient read to find all the hidden refined sugars. Refined Sugar affect Hypoglycemia patients less then type 2 but SODIUM is the # one problem for All Types of Diabetes.

    Sugar in itself gives the least blood sugar spikes ever, checked with a glucose monitor. When you say Americans eat a lot of sugar and flour and that is no wonder why they are obese you’re missing the point. Dietary fat is the biggest cause of obesity.
    Sugar has a bad reputation because it is confused as pastries cakes doughnuts which are full of fat. Quitting sugar will eventually lead you to more depression, less quality sleep and intense cravings for junk food oh sweets, no exceptions.

    I was once keto for 5 years. Good at first then my testosterone depleted. Sleep was awful. My running tanked. I’m not back on healthy carbs including potato’s quinoa fruit, fruit juice, honey. Life is now great. Everything back to normal. Enjoy foods. Sugar is not bad in moderation.

    2.02 I have a few foods that have sugar my favs. I got them out of my meals are you always seem to come back slowly at first and then you have more than you should. Sugar is a man made evil

      Dates are a fruit high in sugar. If you want to lose weight skip the dates. If you want to gain weight or maintain your weight a few dates should be fine. It all depends on what your goal is. I love dates but just have them as a treat now and then. Moderation is the key!

    Wouldn't it be more effective to first define the term whole foods succinctly? (and just don't eat anything else). Or how about a little effort clarifying macro terms: stop using the word carbs to describe junk toxic non foods. These are two of the primary things that keep people confused about nutrition. They've already heard sugar blah blah blah a thousand times, it doesn't punch through the confusion. Sugar is a refined food (junk toxic), fruit is a whole food. Sugar is bad, sugar is good. Carbs are bad, carbs are good. Right? These are the reasons nearly everyone is completely confused about nutrition and health. Let's do some work on clarifying terms!

    So... When we go shopping all you can buy is spinach, broccoli, and strawberries... Everything else is off limits... Because if there isn't a load of sugar then there is a load of carbs.. yeah.. I guess you can eat meat and eggs ... But that's got a bunch of fat and cholesterol in it. and don't get any fruit like bananas, oranges or grapes... Best be drinking water or tea with no sugar.. coffee is impossible to drink without sugar..

      Peter, I knew a lovely elderly man who had more than 20 teaspoons of refined sugar per day on cereal, in tea and coffee, plus more in biscuits, desserts etc. not to mention the carbs in cereal, potatoes, rice, pasta, bread. He told me he could eat as much sugar as he wanted because his blood sugar was normal. He was active, strong, happy, healthy… until he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Survived a major operation but it returned and the second time there was nothing to be done. As Mark is saying, sugar feeds tumours. That tumour robbed him of potentially years of life.
