My sister in law recently told me a fellow mom at her daughters school told her to “watch out” for this movie because she said “within the first 15 minutes my daughter had QUESTIONS”
Why are people so against answering their kid’s questions? I really do think it’s cruel for people to hide the fact that their daughters will bleed and cramp EVERY month until it happens. The whole taboo is what makes this such a traumatic thing for girls to experience until they figure out the normalcy of it on their own

It shouldn't be a taboo topic but still is. In 2022! Puberty and periods happen, and they are unavoidable. Do moms even remember the first time they got their period and probably needed guidance?

From what I gathered, the panda represents the hidden frustration and feelings that Mei bottled up inside her. Hence why when she turned into her panda, it was considerably small. She had just only realized how strict her mom is. Her mom was aware of her own mother’s tendencies for much longer. She felt a lot of guilt and anger so it explains why her panda was so huge compared to the others. This is also backed up by how the panda is brought out only when a strong emotion is expressed. The panda isn’t a metaphor for her period even, the period stuff was confusion from her mom. The panda is instead a metaphor for the emotional turmoil of that age when your life starts to turn focus from inside the family to outside, finding your own interests and peers where your parents are no longer the only people that matter. Her accepting the panda is a reconciliation with those emotions and coming to accept that changes in her life won’t always align with what her mother wants for her. In the end her mother reassures her too, that no matter where life takes Mei, that she’ll always love her and be proud of her.

My mom's mom literally had to sit down and explain to another woman's child what a period was, as this kid thought she was gunna bleed to death. Personally, I felt like the more fitting allegory here was not to do with periods/sexuality, but with the hormonal/emotional upheaval that comes with puberty. It's a coming of age movie concerning a young girl who, instead of repressing and locking away her excitement & passion & emotionality, instead looks to find a way to integrate that experience into her life in a healthy way. Or even that sense of like-- needing to find your own ideal way of living even when you love & respect where you've come from. I don't really think the metaphor here was ever meant to be 1 to 1, beat for beat, but instead it showcased a combination of experiences & challenges that girls tend to face as they transition through puberty, reconcile their distinct identities, and become invested in their own happiness separate from the expectations of others.

It's crazy to me how upset people are that a girl likes boys. If it was a coming-of-age about a 13-year-old-boy crushing on girls, the reaction would be more like "haha boys will be boys". I know this because there are several movies about boys being actually creepy towards girls they "like" and they're considered classics. But the second a teenage girl draws pictures of a boy she likes, suddenly it's gross. Maybe the problem ISN'T that the characters are being sexualized, maybe it's because people don't realize that girls' sexuality or sexual health doesn't only exist for others' consumption/satisfaction.

Seems to me that people(usually more conservative/religious) really seem to like... have this thing, when it comes to girls. Of over-protectiveness and treating like... ugh words. Just, jumping on it? Making everything into some kind of sexualized whatever when it's often not even there.
I see it around me in some people irl as this suffocating, well-meaning but ridiculous, "girls/women gotta stay Pure and 'Virginal' and totally clueless and ignorant, practically asexual(ironically? or not, I am and also aromantic but anyhow) and not be attracted to anyone, or attract anyone. They cannot learn ANYTHING when in their mid-teens beyond 'you must not be alone with boys or you will get pregnant', and as they grow up they must hide any curves they may have until their miraculous Perfect wedding night, which is the only acceptable way and must only be shared with a heterosexual man..." *shrug*
Sometimes I wish I were entirely androgynous, or an android or something so people would stfu and stop treating me either like I must remain unaware my whole life/or I will turn into someone having the sex with anything that moves or some nonsense. I want nothing to do with this absolute bullshite. They don't own me or other gals so they can f%ck right off. Like I don't plan on anything ever, but learning is necessary regardless because, surprise, EVEN IF YOU NEVER HAVE SEX stuff can still happen and it's just a good idea to know about your /own friggin body/.
And it's so frustrating when they just never tell you things and you find out on your own after the fact. Or if you DO want children and all that, it's never talked about so you grow up learning nothing except what you can glean from overhearing kids at school-if you're not homeschooled-or if you can sneak on a computer or read a book with some scene in it without getting caught, and it almost feels its FORBIDDEN to learn about anything-all the godsd$mned way until you're engaged. A man should not be made to feel like less of a man if he experiences such an awful occurrence. There needs to be a safety net and support so a man can report that to authorities without being mocked.
But Jesus Christ this is a movie about teenage girl puberty, not sexual assault. We can address issues individually as well you know? Just because there’s a movie for kids about racism doesn’t mean we still shouldn’t discuss sexism in whatever form it takes. It’s just a family movie dealing with certain themes.

Sounds like a movie that I'd show my children if they were the right age. Sexualizing periods has always boggled my mind. They're just a part of life from puberty onwards. We don't sexualize boys for starting to grow beard hair. And taking the metaphor as far as people have is really reaching hard! I seriously doubt the writers had any ill intent or that any young person watching it will get the wrong idea.
Also, I'm all for periods losing their weird unnecessary stigma so that we can finally drop the weird covert act where we have to pretend like we're not in excruciating pain once a month because that would lead to questions; so we can stop hoping that the teachers/ work colleagues who are covering for us won't ask further questions when we have to use the washroom more often/ during inconvenient times; so we can speak up more easily, without the internalized shame, against PMS being treated as a joke or as an excuse to disregard us once a month (even though men have hormonal shifts too, albeit with no regularity). It probably won't happen, but it would be nice to work towards it.
This turned into an unintended rant.
Anyways, this movie sounds like a thoughtfully written, appropriate teen movie and I see zero issues as a parent.

Getting my period for me was just life.
Periods and puberty are just a part of life and its honestly disgusting how ADULTS keep pushing the narrative that periods and puberty and peoples natural bodies are bad and taboo. It just creates a huge opportunity for fear, anxiety, and body issues to form as well as rifts in child-parent relationships. Kids deserve to know about themselves. They deserve someone who they can talk to and feel comfortable asking hard questions. Ughhhh I just hate these parts of society so much.

It talked about how sometimes tradition can be harmful, talked about adolescence and the struggle of dealing with hormones and such, it talked about how even people who only have your best interest in mind can still do harmful things, and yes.. There was symbolism for periods and even menopause too. If you're a child who hasn't gotten your period yet, you're probably more likely to see all those other messages, especially if they relate to you, than you are about the period message. Idk why ppl think there's no such thing as multiple symbolic meanings for one thing.

Agreed. Similar to what Pig mentioned here, the “panda pics” things did initially come off to me as weird and I thought the way it was phrased made it seem odd, but, naturally, that was quickly debunked by the fact that Mei was the equivalent of a big furry mascot. Mei suddenly is cool and popular, and the kids at school love it. They seem to accept her because she has something that is unique, the way her friends did, or the girls from the PE class. She’s using her newfound popularity (literally transforming into a panda) to make friends and sell merch. It would be the equivalent of a musician or an artist or even a UA-camr selling merch of themselves or what they do. So “panda pics” is essentially a meet-and-greet

The way Mei and her mom make up and grow in their relationship should honestly get a pass. While I was watching, I kept thinking about and connecting the thing Mei and her friends did to how me and my friends acted at that age, how me and my girl friends felt like we knew everything, how we were the "bestie squad!" and how we giggled and helped each other navigate our changing feeling and crushes. This movie is the most realistic movie about being a girl going who's growing up, and I'm so glad it was made :)

One of the reasons that guys (boys and men) are so angry about this is because not only is it not about them, but the males are sex symbols. There is no "manly man" character for them to relate to, save the day, save the girl, etc. With the boy band, the boys are very definitely ONLY sex symbols. The guys who are engaged about this are the same men who are afraid of gay guys because they don't want to be on the receiving end of the subjectification that they have towards women. Also, the father's character is nurturing. He cooks, he isn't The Man of the House and he sympathizes with his child and is more understanding than the mother. Also upsetting to men who think men should not have feelings and do "women's work."
The part about suppressing the panda is all about how girls are supposed to repress their feelings, suppress their sexuality. All of the women in that line are taught to repress these emotions, and never to express that part of themselves. And of course the thought that a woman can completely express herself and her sexuality is threatening to men who want to be the only ones who can have temper tantrums and be big and scary. The girls in this movie are not sexualized in any way. They don't deal with all the changes that accompany burgeoning womanhood. It's not about that. It's about that time when tween girls are beaten down and condemned for being attracted to whoever they find attractive. There are so many problems with sex and sexuality and in particular female sexuality, there is a lot to unpack, but the failure of our society not recognizing that girls, and women, have these feelings too. What will happen if girls start to actually like sex? How can we continue to make women the only ones responsible for pregnancy if we recognize that women have passions just like men do >>> and they're THE SAME! Oh no. The women are the ones who are always supposed to say no. And the men? "Boys will be boys." What if a man isn't driven and controlled by his penis? Can't have that. Boys might have feelings? That can be addressed in a different movie. Because it's not about men and their problems and they don't acknowledge these issues AT ALL and THAT is insulting to those men because there isn't even a nod to them and their issues. Welcome to our world.

When you say that these people are the ones sexualizing it, you hit the nail on the head. It's weird to me how "Turning Red" was villianised before releasing, but everyone still loves "Inside Out". You know, the movie of a girl getting so depressed that she goes emotionally numb and tries to run away from home because the pressure of maintaining the image of happiness is too overwhelming for her.
Don't get me wrong, I love both! As someone who's had depression since I was a kid, I really related to Inside Out. But I also related to Turning Red. I was a cringe teenager who drew stupid art and wrote fanfiction on online forums while feeling the pressure from my parents to be a perfect daughter. As much as people associate Turning Red to periods-- it's not. It's more dealing with the mental space of no longer being a kid but not quite being an adult. It's a power fantasy of feeling like you don't recognize who you are any more and coming to grips to what you really want to be as opposed to repressing your true self. She literally hulks out, which what teenager hasn't wished they could do that? The only difference is is that she turns into a large, cute red panda-- which can also be its own metaphor of wanting to be intimidating in moments of rage or stress when the world sees you as small and unassuming/nonthreatening.
But sure, call the movie about being true to yourself inappropriate for kids before flipping on a movie where we get to watch a physical embodiment of childhood whimsy die real time.

Periods should be normalized because it is a normal part of growing up just as how boys have morning wood and vocal cracks. The backlash Turning Red received was unfair. The panda isn't a one-to-one allegory for periods. It's also part of a cultural rite-of-passage that's important to her family, even if in early-2000s Canada, it's a part of her culture that they feel they have to supress or ignore. The selling pictures of her panda isn't selling an expression of her sexuality, it's selling an expression of her culture. Which is why at the end of the movie, she shows her panda at the temple for the tourists to share her culture and teach people about it.

I watched Matt Walsh's take on this and I commented this under his video, "I feel sorry for your kids." Like you said, if people sexualize this movie...then it's THEM sexualizing it and it has NOTHING to do with the actual movie. The fact that Mei and her friends filming the panda is compared to selling nudes...I mean 🤮 Come on. I've got a dirty mind and even *I* didn't come up with that kinda 💩 People's minds are in the gutter and beyond at this point.
As a mom myself and someone who grew up feeling a little like Mei Mei myself, I balled at the ending where Mei Mei sees her own mother as a teen. It made me realize the relationship my mom had with her own parents and it makes sense of why she was acting the way that she was, especially when I started dating. She didn't want anyone or anything to come between us because that's what happened to my mom and her parents. So, it struck a chord in me for sure. We obviously worked things out but it took a lot of heart ache.
It's also making me view my relationship with my own daughter differently and I happen to adore this film even if some parts are super cringey.
    Thank you for this review!

Do a version for a girl teenager, and those same groups of people lose their minds and scream the movie is evil. Talk about double standards. I love this movie. I actually never realized that, but it makes so much sense. Scott turning into a werewolf was basically puberty (or “manhood”) for him, and I believe his father said that it was natural and basically inevitable, and learn to accept himself. I think I also remember his dad telling him that he has to learn to control “the wolf” and not let it control him.
It also makes sense about the boost of self-confidence, the amount of hair growth, the increase in aggression, him at first feeling like a “freak” even though his dad reassured him it’s normal, him starting to do things impulsively, only using his “wolf” side to be accepted by his peers, and etc. Can’t believe it took me this long to think about it.

i also thought the red panda more represented generational trauma/repressed emotions than i ever thought it did periods (which would be why the mom's panda was so big -- holding back even more of herself than mei was, in an attempt to be the daughter her mother wanted her to be -- and why mei's was so small in comparison -- having an outlet to be her authentic self, via her friends, and her own mother maybe not quite being **as** strict as her grandmother)

This movie did so much stuff right. The period sequence was hilariously close to home. The panic and confusion was so relatable, and the box of period supplies is just. So accurate. I loved that scene.
Not to mention the whole storyline is rooted in fandom. Mei is directly in a fandom, she’s a huge fangirl for the boy band of the era. Having been that thirteen year old girl going through life and being in fandom, participating in that world feels like a secret. Mei’s need to hide her love of the band and the music because her parents would hate it or disapprove… that’s such a genuine, real story from someone in that situation. It’s so true. Girls who participate in fandom, especially at a young age, aren’t normally comfortable revealing that passion to the world. It’s considered cringe, it’s frowned upon, it’s something to indulge in only in secret, online, where no one can see it.
Turning Red is one of the most honest depictions of a young girl’s life, it’s kinda sad that so many people seem to hate it.

As far as the "panda" thing went, I compared it to Michael J. Fox's "Teen Wolf," (1985) and it represented the lowering of inhibitions. Selling pictures of the panda wasn't any different, I think, then when Styles told Scott Howard to "Wolf Out."
One of the things that made adults uncomfortable was the blatant disrespect shown to the adults. (Mom says "You can't go to the concert." The kids went to the concert, anyway.)
As I shared on a different UA-cam video thread, I found the story thematically similar to a mashup of "Teen Wolf," where the teen turns into a cooler animal with lower inhibitions; Amy Tan's "Joy Luck Club," where the daughter of a Chinese immigrant deals with assimilating into the Western World and not sticking strictly to Old World values; and Judy Bloom's "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret," which explores a bunch of adolescent girls growing into their adolescent/teen bodies, and all the world of challenges that come with the hormones, self-perception, awkwardness, etc.
I didn't get the outrage against the movie, either. I just didn't care for the movie.

She learns to love herself regardless of her change in emotional and physical appearance, and eventually embraces the change. It’s just a coincidence that women who are going through menopause and teenagers go through a similar amount of stress because the family unit is changing at those stages. The children are stressed because they are finding themselves and becoming more independent. Adults are stressed because they’re losing their kids and desperately trying to create boundaries and sever their child’s connections to other people to control them. I like that they find a balance in the end. The mom loosens up a bit so Mei can do more social activities and choose her own path, while still respecting her culture and parents.

I got mine when I was 9-10 years old, no one had told me what it was so I hid it thinking that I was dying 💀 I’m sick of people thinking that periods are an ‘adult mature topic’ that kids and teens should be shielded from ever knowing about, which reinforces the shame, hiding and period stigma later on when periods do happen. It even effects how boys view periods, they tend to shame it a lot or make harsh jokes in young teenhood. This hiding and stigma causes a real domino effect, now we’re left with adult guys raging and getting embarrassed about things they don’t even have to worry about, they rage about others even mentioning it (obviously not all men before y’all come at me lol)
When I got mine at age 9, I definitely wasn’t a mature adult, so stop making it into such an adult mature and shunned topic, I had the consequences of it and I hope the next youngins won’t have to

      I agree. Whole heartily.
I was fortunate enough to have a mother who was very opened about it.
She never kept it a secret. And when I was 8, when I understood basic biology. My mom really sat me down and talked about it. She wasn't sure when it would happen for me, but she heard some girls got it at 8, so she wanted to be cautious and told me everything I need to know.
I admit it was awkward, but my mom wanted me to not be scared when it happens. And she was right, when it happened when I was 12. I knew what it was immediately. I went to her and she had a small bag with all the stuff I needed.
Even though my mom was prepared and was preparing me for it. When it came, it was funny how much she fussed about it, panicking slightly, making sure I was equipped with all I needed. Like preparing hot water with a little brown sugar and pack extra, in case.
But thinking on it now, I can't help but appreciate it. My experience wasn't scary, because I knew what was happening. And my mom was very open about hers, and so I had some idea what to expect.
So yes, I agree it is something that should be talked about to children, especially when they are nearing that age. It is so they won't be afraid.
I still don't understand why it is such a taboo to talk about it to children. They are, eventually, going to have to go through the process and experience. They can't be sheltered forever, nor should they be.

Puberty is quite literally the opposite of an adult topic lmao. Puberty, but specifically female puberty is very rarely spoken about, and seeing a movie, intended for a young audience, addressing all the feelings that I felt as a young girl is enough to make me emotional. Being a teenager is rough, getting your first period is rough, hormone changes are rough, so why shield your kids from the inevitability that it's gonna suck for a little while? That just sets them up for more harm than good, I would've felt a whole lot less ashamed for my entire teenagehood if I would've saw something like this when I was 10.

I consider myself as a guy with a dark sense of humor. and me watching this for the 6th time (mostly because I like it and it makes a good background movie while drawing), I never even considered it to be controversial. by some miracle, I was able to avoid all the controversy and stuff before watching the movie with my mom. I then went online to see others opinions (as you do) and was pretty surprised to see everyone hate the movie for relatively dumb or minor reasons.

I think another issue with people complaining about the panda exclusively being a metaphors for sex or puberty or whatever is that, at least in my opinion, it's much more complicated than that. The panda isn't a coming of age thing for the family, it's part of their history and culture. As someone who grew up outside of my birth country, I've always kind of felt as though my culture is on display especially when I was a kid, and the main character is doing what a lot of non-white kids or children of immigrant families do: show off their culture once it becomes cool.

I realized the panda was a metaphor for multiple things, but I hadn't thought of it under that perspective, it makes so much sense! And honestly makes it even better, the panda _ALSO_ being Mei-Mei getting in touch with their culture like no one else in the family did before~

That's the thing with analogy. People reveals their inner values when given something that connects to them. Sadly, instead of realizing that people had :
      Multiple different backgrounds
      Intergenerational cultures
      Familial values and teachings
      Up until environmental upbringing
... from parents to behave exactly the way Meilin does in Turning Red during the age of Sudden Realization, Social media users just thinking of sex and puberty.
Ending up in revealing themselves as who they are as they project their Ego into the viewer's Stand In. While far too many different people experiencing this exact problem in real life getting projected upon Social Media Users feeling the exact opposite.
Turning Red is a good movie, and of course the moment Asian like me gets represented in a movie, Social Media gets angry because it's not fitting their Hollywood Stereotype.

I feel like the Panda could also be seen as one's cultural identity, whereas Mei's mom, aunts, and grandmother chose to assimilate into Western society by giving up their pandas, Mei chose to hold onto her's because she believes it's a part of who she is and she is proud of it.

I think a lot of people disliked Turning Red before it came out because they feared it would be another Cuties. Well, guess what? Turning Red was not an animated version of Cuties, because Turning Red knew how to tell a family-friendly story about puberty with no bodily fluids to subject us to seeing and does the opposite of what Cuties did, which is to tell a very good heartfelt strory about four tween girls who wear decent clothing and have entertaining personalities, and still have a sense of childlike innocence at the end of their film's story.
