    Mitch's comedic gay reveal was nice, the joke wasn't that he's gay because manly man gay=funny ig, it was that the sister had been running around and tumbling over herself for him but she never stood a chance

    I personally love the reveal of Mitch being gay. Even though it’s set as a joke, he’s not the butt of the joke, Norman’s sister is, and it’s actually funny. Plus it actually goes with the whole theme of the movie of making assumptions about people so it fits very well. It couldn’t be more perfect
    Also appreciate that he directly states that he has a bf. No subtle implied bs so you can get representation points without upsetting conservative parents (I’m looking at you Disney and your 1000 first gay characters)

    I would always tear up when it gets to Agatha’s backstory. The fact that she was just a little girl having fun.

    Neither did the actual women in the real witch trials

    • @Lokear
      @Lokear Рік тому +4

      Agreed, and as a neurodivergent kid, it hit me even harder - she was just a little different, and she got punished for it... but then she lashed out against them, and that *also* was a mistake that wouldn't be rectified for centuries. There are so many stories that would have the blame solely rest on the judges, but I really love how Aggie did have blame too, it felt a lot more real. Still, she didn't deserve to be pulled from her family like that; as you said, she was just a little girl.
      Also, yeah, yikes, those real women who literally weren't witches and were just killed for nothing. I love me some Hocus Pocus, but the way they're portrayed just doesn't reflect the actual witch trials as much as I'd like. ParaNorman is a step up on that front for me.

      I think Coraline maybe had better animation, but Norman also had great animation, just maybe not as fantastical as Coraline. Coraline's story was kinda cliche and dull though. Kid dont like parents, kid find new people, realize new people = evil, defeat evil, go home and appreciate that parents are not literally trying to kill her anymore.
      I love that Norman is kinda based on witch trials, and it was mostly accurate to what happened in them. I love that they made it clear that although there are most likely powers out there we don't understand, that doesn't mean we need to fall into fear and superstition. I love love love the writing and storytelling, and I LOVE the characters. Only thing Coraline had going for me was, like I said, the animation. But the characters were not developed well and I didnt really care what happened to anyone, not even really Coraline. But every time someone in Norman got into a dangerous spot I'd be nervous. I also love how they made the big brother be very casually gay at the very end, AND HE WASN'T BURIED! He was a bit of a himbo but they gave him a real heart of gold. I love how much of an acceptance film this is. Like, a lot of the times, they'd use the token race, ethnicity or LGBTQ+ character as what the plot characters need to learn to accept, but they made the stereotypical characters just normal people LIKE THEY ARE, and the acceptance message works better from the perspective of a usually horrifying notion of zombies and ghosts, still being normal people in the end, with good and bad aspects. I love how well they worked that angle, and it's become a staple film for me every Halloween.

      @@laurenfrey873 of course it's not okay. the movie doesn't say it's okay, but it is a reality for many families. I wouldn't hold that against this movie because the point of the movie wasn't 'parents need to be better for their kids' it was 'people kind of suck and make ignorant choices out of fear and also dodge responsibility' and the parents never apologising fits that point, just like how the mob all try to justify themselves at the end.

    As an adult who suffered numerous abuses as a child, I deeply resonate with this movie and I'm happy to see such a fun review of its deeper themes. I personally feel the message that I got was--cycles of abuse end when victims are able to communicate and are listened to. And it's wonderful that a children's movie can make that so explicit to future generations. Whether it's child abuse (what was done to Agatha and Norman by adults), systemic abuses (like those committed by the police, school, and court towards the community/individuals), or peer to peer abuse (like Alvin, Courtney, and Mitch do to Norman and Neil)--the movie highlights how without communication between parties there is room for such abuse to continue. It also displays how children can unknowingly perpetuate and unintentionally commit acts of harm when they are raised to understand such behavior as "normal" or "necessary." For example, Mitch warns Neil about hanging out with Norman. While this is not meant to be harmful, Neil explicitly states that it is and that its because Mitch is pressuring him to abandon a friend because of fear. Fear that was created by other people's perception of Norman not the reality of his character. Mitch is essentially repeating the lines he's heard around town. He believes he's protective of Neil, but Neil assures him it's not helpful to him to have to be alone. When Norman and Neil are finally listened to and supported as they state they need, it becomes clear to Courtney and to Mitch (and by extension the community) that their assumptions were false and born of ignorance. Breaking cycles of generational trauma is incredibly difficult and complex and this movie (while goofy) managed to show it quite well and manage it appropriately. Two big thumbs up for this art and your insightful review ❤

    Paranorman is still my favorite Laika movie to this day for how the twist of the story went. Just the fact that it went dark real fast after the reveal of who the witch was legit made me stare with wide eyes for a while cuz holy shit? And the end talk hit me so hard I cried over it when I first watched this movie. It was something I related to... in a really personal way of not being accepted and how people's fears of my identity caused them to act in ways that were hurtful. It just handles the whole thing with such passion and understanding. I still to this day feel this movie deserves so much more than what it got.
    Not to mention, the fact that their town is a huge tourist attraction that plays off the killing and murdering of witches and how hard it leans into selling this romanticized idea of the witch trials pissed Agatha off even more. She zapped that statue because it was so offensive to her. That shit's gotta sting with hundreds of yrs later, you wake up to people celebrating what was obviously unjust murder of people who were just a bit different than the rest.
