I always find it ironic but also a sign of neglect for coralline that in the movie her parents were essentially supposed to be plant experts and yet hadn’t even taught her to look out for poison oak which would be easy to spot for them

@@Dumbluckk01 i don’t think that they don’t love her but I do feel like they prioritize their own feeling over hers by ignoring her, and because they moved and Coraline had to start at a new school in a place where she didn’t know anyone and had to dress a certain way because the mom didn’t feel comfortable with the past living situation since “the accident” involving the mom, they also don’t introduce themselves to the neighbors with coraline she just goes off on her own to do so
I feel like they are not bad parents, but stressed out adults who had to put up with moving and a final date for their new book that they need to pay their lives. They are so into their roles as responsable adults they aro not prioritizing give attention to their kid right now, but that doesn’t mean they don’t care, the fact that her mom hide the key away from Coraline shows she was concerned about her dreams, and his real father was playful and sweet, but Coraline was too manipulated to notice it.
@@march.286 You make very good points and I don't disagree with you, I don't think that the parents are awful by any means but I do feel like that Coraline was feeling neglected or at least ignored which lead her to have these desires in the other world. However, I acknowledge that the movie frames things from Coraline's perspective so we empathize with her as the audience is intended to view things from a child-like perspective.This means, much like how children often view things, the negatives and ignoring is being emphasized where the care and things the parents are doing is not as promoted.The parents are not bad, but through Coralines perspective there are points in the movie that seem clear to viewers the parents could have handled certain situations better.
Is it just me or does stop motion automatically give a movie an unsettling feeling ? It brings stuff alive but in an unnatural way that has always creeped me out a bit

I think the saddest line/scene in the whole movie is when Coraline confronts the fake Mr. Bobskinsy and says “You’re not even real. You’re just a copy of the real Mr. Bobskiny.” And he replies “Not even that anymore.” Gives me chills every time.

I like how you’re like “oh well Coraline is somewhat a kids movie” when both the movie and the book were made for children.
Fun Fact: after the author finished it, he asked his daughter to read it and tell him if it was too scary for children. She read it, said it was fine, and the rest is history. Years later turns out she said she lied to him bc she didn’t wanna discourage him but she was extremely scared and had trouble sleeping for a while.

honestly I relate to her! I watched the movie and got scared, so my mom returned it. Then I saw the movie at a book store and rewatched it....I didn't sleep for a week and woke up crying and my dad had to calm me down (my mom and dad are divorced)

I always saw Other Wybie pulling off his glove and blowing away the dust as him telling Coraline that he’s not actually a real, living person. He’s filled with the same dust the Coraline doll got filled up with at the beginning of the movie. He’s telling her he’s just another one of the Other Mother’s creations, that she made JUST for Coraline. He’s not real, he doesn’t matter, but she DOES.
That’s what I thought too. Because even the rats/mice are stuffed with dust just like the doll!!!

I remember the dad telling Coraline that the needle was so sharp she wouldn't feel a thing. I believed that as a kid until the ghost girl with the hat showed up and her face was frozen in agony.

Another thing someone pointed out is that in the beginning of Coraline, when the doll is torn apart, when she calls it and the doll comes to her. The other mother hums, to call the doll in to be changed and when the doll starts looking like Coraline, she sings her song again. This isn't her randomly singing, this is the beldam practicing how she will sound like as Coraline's other mother to Coraline.
She discards one voice for another(Sweet ghost girl 's mother for Coraline's mother)
I've watched this movie and read the book many times throughout the years and never noticed that detail until someone pointed out on UA-cam on the Coraline soundtrack.

I’ve always noticed that specific eerie detail about her physical appearance
Something I really like about the other Father is that him riding the Mantis is kinda symbolic of real life Mantis relationships. Other Mother was just using him for her own means and when he was no longer useful, she took control of him completely. I just think it's really clever since they could've chosen any bug for him to ride.

One of my favorite things is when the Other Mother gives Caroline a cake, it says "Welcome Home." According to graphology, a dishonest/deceitful person may add unnecessary loops to certain letters. The O in home has extra loops. This means that Coraline is absolutely welcome, but she's not home.
In other words, the cake 🎂 was a lie
Coralone’s parents vs the “other” parents to me is a really good allegory about true love versus like fake love bombing (aka what a kid would think love is)
She thinks her parents don’t love her, or love her enough, because they ignore her and move her to this crappy apartment away from her friends and objectively make her life worse, but in reality they were struggling financially and moved to try and find a better job opportunity to make her life better in the long run. They were stressed and under deadline and couldn’t even really afford groceries, and they were terrified if they didn’t get the column spot they’d basically be destitute, but the end scene where the mom buys her the gloves (even though they still shouldn’t be splurging) kind of proves the sacrifice her parents made for her and the family. The other mother does all this amazing stuff for her but wanted “something to eat” basically she wanted to devour coralines soul for herself, so she love bombed her with food and clothes and superficial things to get the adulation she wanted but never intended to reciprocate the good feelings coralline had for her, only to consume her.
The book and movie were so insanely well done I’ve seen a ton of videos analyzing them but none of them really bring that up. None of them talk about why the fake dad helped her either but I actually have a really good theory that makes total sense about that too.

@@MetalMattie lol I felt bad typing too long of a comment (especially since I realize my phone changed the spelling of coraline like 5 times haha) but basically my theory is that since the Beldam used the kids souls to create the world, and she created the father and friend, that basically the reason they weren’t fully evil or bad like her is because they had some the souls as like residual personality, basically she had to create them to care for coraline because that’s what coraline wanted, so the two people that should care for her actually got part of a soul and wasn’t just a mindless copy of her/to serve her purpose. It’s out there but that’s kind of how I rationalized how they were able to help

-throws her into the mirror to reflect herself
- Spider in folklore create illusions and entrapment.
-the car in coraline is 2006 Volkswagen beetle(everything is insect related lol)

-Tadahiro Uesugi illustrations were the inspiration for the look and colors, feel of Coraline.

Adding some theories of my own: the buttons symbolise the fact that the Other Mother doesn't actually want real children to love, she wants dolls with no free will. I think that's what the ghosts mean when they say "she ate up our lives". She separates their souls, the part of them that makes them who they are, because she has no use for those bits. I don't know if she eats their bodies, or whether it's more of a metaphorical consumption of their attention, time and emotional energy. Much like a narcissist will "consume" us and "feed" off our reactions. They need to consent to the buttons, much in the same way a narcissist needs us to willingly stay in a relationship with them. If she wanted to eat them she could just eat them.
In one of my psych classes we discussed how the "real world" is dull and made to look like the perspective of someone who is suffering from depression and anxiety. The adults reactions are common to children with mental health struggles. The "other world" is a maladaptive daydream Coraline has created to make her happy and help her escape the reality she is faced with because she thinks her parents don't love her when in reality they are working hard to sustain themselves and build a better life. Now, this is where it gets interesting. The buttons.... yeah they represent suicide. Think about it, it is the only way to permanently stay in this dream world she made without having to wake back up in the real world. The game is her struggling internally with whether she should give in or not -or as brought up by another peer it is her struggling to stay alive after an attempt-. My favorite theory we made was the cat being a therapist. It seemed really funny but valid. It's dark, but it kinda makes sense.

@@sarabear3394 Not just a victim; the medal he wears is similiar to the medals given to people (civilian or military) who were part of the Chernobyl cleanup.
I never even realized how coraline is a metaphor for depression. And the otherworld is basically a fantasy made up by her to distance herself from the real world, that's why everything in the otherworld is how coraline wants it to be like. And her "sewing her eyes" is probably a symbol to blinding herself from the real world and fully embracing the fantasy.
Which now makes me sad because of the implications of dying after you accept the buttons
Whenever I watched this movie as a kid, 99% of it didn't bother me at all. For whatever reason, it's the ending that messed me up. You didn't mention it, and everyone I've watched talk about this movie didn't mention it. The last few seconds when the cat vanishes fucking terrified me. The music always got to me. I've come to understand this fear by thinking that the Other Mother may one day find her way to the real world because the cat's able to. When the cat vanished, it implied that the other world is still very much around. It doesn't get to me anymore, but I'll never forget that fear
Omfg, Story time:
When I was like 5-6 years old, I was cuddled on the lounge with my brother watching this movie. I didn’t have too much problems with it…until the end. The last part where the cat walks through the portal, there’s a thud before a fade to black. My prick of a brother pushed me off the lounge just as the thud set off. I immediately started crying and had nightmares for years after.
Also when the cat vanishes, you heard a door close and the screen turns black, which I think indicates to why the beldam hates the cat so much. I believe he occasionally comes to her world to taunt her lonesome life and perhaps the ending applied to that...I dunno but I didn't notice that either until I heard the door close after watching it a couple of times
what i always noticed is that the well that they threw the stuff (the hand and the key) looks acctualy like the tunnel that coraline uses to get to the other world.
there's actually two theories about this. One, that the well is just another portal to the other world, and two, the theory that *everything after she goes to the other world for the first time is still the other world.*
I'd argue that the Other Father doesn't slowly become a puppet despite his care for Coraline, but rather the reverse. The Other Mother wanted to make something that Coraline would percieve as a perfect father- attentive and caring, but made him a little TOO well without realizing it. The Other Father was such a perfect ideal that he would do anything to keep 'his child' safe, even from his so-called wife.
The worst part is that the beldam is not the worst villain in this movie. The world itself is. The tunnel is actually a throat but it's not the beldams. It's some Lovecraftian type horror. It's literally a living ancient being 😖
Probably explains why the Beldam is terrified of being alone whatever she’s inside of could know she’s in there if she tried to escape through the door since she’s technically too big.

Its actually in the book Coraline. So its actually true. The last time Coraline is escaping from the Beldam, she is vaguely aware that the tunnel itself is alive. It seems to be drooling and breathing, and she knew that if she fell in that tunnel, she would never get back up again. Spooky stuff

When you mentioned the esophagus, it reminded me a lot of a theory I heard about the Pink Palace being some sort of giant entity that preys on children's souls, and the reason why the other mother lives there is because they are in a simbiotic relationship where she lures in children and eats their bodies, and the house consumes their souls. This is mostly supported on how the book describes the tunnel between the normal world and the other world.
That is actually horrifying this movie is soo good
if this is true, that would explain why the other children are trapped in a room with no door, and the mirror only seems to respond to the other mother. coraline breaks the mirror later on, perhaps severing the connection between the other mother and the house, leaving her weak?
i like to believe that the reason the beldam says she will die without coraline is because the house will now eat her soul instead having no other options

To this day i still feel like there is more to this movie. There's even a theory, that coraline died in the other world and the end is just a dream of how would it be. When they are doing the garden at the end it still looks like coraline's face.

Granted I saw “Dinosaur” (2000) in the cinema when I was the same age and while I did get scared at times, it was nowhere near as horrifying or as unsettling as this film.
@@RB01.10 Idk I was actually 4 when it came out and the first time I saw it was in theaters. We got the DVD and I've seen it dozens of times since then. I can actually recite the meeting with the ghost kids by memory and used to scare my mom with it when I was a kid. Yeah it scared me at first but I was more fascinated than anything. My parents had me watching a lot of things that were too old for me, but still technically kid-friendly. James and the Giant Peach, Coraline, 9 (which came out the same year as Coraline), Are You Afraid of the Dark, Goosebumps, Gargoyles, Sailor Moon...

In the book the tunnel is instead a long dark windy hallway, when Coraline is escaping she touches the wall and it's covered in wet fur that she describes as feeling like she stuck her hand in somethings mouth. Coraline also thinks about how she constantly feels like something's following her in the hallway that is much older and hungrier than the other mother.
That’s even more unsettling to think about. The Other Mother is already hard enough to deal with, so what could be even older and scarier than her?
it makes sense that the other mother was a parasitic arachnid just barely sustaining herself. its uniquely terrifying, realizing her power had disguised the real beast Coraline was in. And the line about her mother still strikes me at times
I remember the novel and reading it in primary school. It was interesting and really was unique that I wanted to keep it and even asked the teacher if I could keep it since no one else touched it but of course, she said “no” but was happy I was reading it and we talk about it.
Short spoiler and warning ahead-
When reading it the book, it was extremely macabre and outlandishly terrifying yet as a kid, didn’t exactly understand it and enjoyed it still. A moment that stuck with me is when Coraline was going against the other mother with the game. This quote is from the book
“How do I know you'll keep your word?" asked Coraline. "I swear it," said the other mother. "I swear it on my own mother's grave."
"Does she have a grave?" asked Coraline.
"Oh yes," said the other mother. "I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out, I put her back.” That’s only one of many instances of the morbid nature of Coraline. Going back and picking up new details from both, the movie and book are always so fun and exciting. Fun fact, the reason why everyone calls her “Caroline” is because Neil Gaiman actually made a typo on her name and decided to stick with it. I thought that was funny.
there was another detail you missed
the lightning that strikes at the window when the other-mother gives Coraline the mud, flashes in the shape of the other-mother's bony hand, referencing what was going to happen at the very end of the movie!
I was severely depressed at 12 years old and watched Coraline literally every night 2 go to sleep. I felt like no one understood I felt except when I watched that movie, Coraline's feelings were very similar to mine, paranoid, insecure, and reaching for love. I remember a lot of kids being afraid of even the movie but I felt definitely comforted by her being scared the same as I was at that time in my life. You can watch it literally 100 times and notice things.
I was the exact same way. I related to Coraline so much when I was younger.

this is also why its my comfort movie! Also because its not a "friendship fixes all" type of movie... these ones made me feel miserable because i had and still have a lot of trouble socializing. So watching coraline always helped me with my loneliness

A small detail: if you look at Mr. B's character design closely, you'll see a medal on his chest. This medal is almost identical to the medals given to the chernobyl liquidators. Due to this there's a theory that he was a liquidator at chernobyl, hence why his skin would be blue and his proportions so off.

@@BionicPIGtv this movie shows that negligent in the eyes of the children vs the parents are 2 different things. Very often for kids, it's "i want you all the time", "i want you to be my buddy" and "i want you to be my social security blanket" and i want you to join the adventures and the fun times and it's really hard for kids to embrace boredom. Before becoming a parent, you'll think that Coraline's parents are terrible but when you become a parent you'll think "what relateable parents" because her parents deeply love her but they just moved, they need money to fix the car and organised stuff in the house so they need to work a lot. It's not their job to entertain her all the time. And what i like about the story of Coraline is the serious amounts of courage that it takes for her to get out of the dream world and then to go back to her drab reality and to acccept the blah-ness of life sometimes. And to embrace it. I mean, by the end, she's embracing all of life including the boring greenish grayness of Oregon. Things start to look up with her parents, because instead of avoiding them or pressuring them, she just starts to live. And then they follow her example and then they're out in the garden, and it's muddy and it's icky and there's worms and it's gross. But they're doing it, you know. And her mother does go food shopping, and sometimes things get better if you wait them out. And sometimes they don't, but we have to face them.
If you’re a fan of Coraline, I would highly recommend reading, “The Thief of Always” by Clive Barker. It’s a much darker story but very similar plot. It’s one of my favorite books!

I feel like the ending was very profound in this movie. They were all outside planting flowers and Coraline's mother says that she doesn't like the dirt but she does like the flowers. So I guess it's worth digging through the dirt to plant your flowers.🌷
When I watched IT, I realized how the Beldam and IT are similar XD he feeds on fear, she feeds on love. Imagine them taking place in the same universe.
The book was written specifically to be a child's horror story -- Neil Gaiman wrote it for his young daughter. It's so dark & excellent at portraying the existential terrors inherent to being a child.
If I remember correctly the only reason the book was published was because his daughter lied about not being scared of the book because the publishers thought it would be too scared of it

i always saw the situation with Coraline and her parents wasn't neglectful, more like her parents were under a lot of stress with work deadlines, moving house, also the car accident that put her mom in the neck brace. They weren't constantly neglectful, they were under a lot of stress and couldn't give her as much attention as she would have liked at the moment. They do love her, her dad even sings to her while giving her dinner the same way her other father does and her mom does eventually get her the gloves. And they let her host the garden party she wanted and participate in it even though Coraline's mom doesn't really like getting dirty. They are good parents, they just had to get past the stress first before they could go back to giving her their full attention. I saw/see my own parents in Coraline's parents, good parents who were sometimes really busy and I had to be left to my own devices for entertainment but still loved me and took good care of me.
Of course, if someone else gleans something else from their relationship and situation, I cannot and don't want to stop you. That's the wonder of art, you can get different meanings from it.
The writer of the book (Neil gaiman) actually helped with the plot of the movie. He read over the first draft and explicitly said that it was too similar to the book. He also got the idea for coraline because he wrote an email to his friend caraline or caralynn but mistyped it and thought “hey! That could be a name”

The moment that always gives me chills no matter how many times I've seen the movie is the when Coraline is escaping the Other Mother and she's just screaming DONT LEAVE ME as she bangs against the door.

I actually have a theory that she’s never escaped the other world. In the other world the cat can disappear into things. But not in the real world. And at the end of the movie, he disappears into the pink palace outdoor, which implies Coraline is still in the other world. I love this theory but it’s also kinda sad. I wish we could see a second movie of Coraline.

the cake that the other mother gives Coraline ( the one that says welcome home) actually has a double loop on the “o” of “home”. the double loop on cursive “o’s” usually means “lies” or “fake” (something along those lines), meaning that the other world isn’t her home, but she is welcome (sense the o on welcome doesn’t have a double loop) . rlly cool detail imo
When I rewatched this movie recently I realised some wierd things about the endings. The biggest for me being how they showed emphasis on the ceiling crack each time she came back, showing that the real world was that way, but when she sleeps at the end she wakes up to the van Gogh painting curling etc, the fact they didn't show the cracked ceiling made the ending disturbing to me, and then we see another face in the garden, this time a bit different then earlier, and the 2 hands in the cloud, even if they were seperating it doesn't make sense for there to be 2 hands. Let alone the cat being able to vanish. After watching, I realised many were confused at the ending too, but unlike many I don't think the cat was the mastermind or somn but I believe the cat took coraline from the other world to maybe a world created by him, or I believe maybe coraline is dead or ultimately stuck in that world and the hands symbolised the other mother had lost the control and now the world is under the cats control which ig here makes the cat the mastermind , in the end u hear tapping and a bang as the cat vanishes. Also I believe wybie was told to look after coraline by the grandmother, that's why he follows her in the mist rather than appearing. We r first introduced wybie is aware of the truth of the doll but says he can't go into detail.
Hearing him talk about his wife in such a loving and uplifting way is absolutely adorable.
Both terrifying and great memories of watching this as a child.

This movie is how you do horror right. Incredibly creepy, unsettling, disturbing, dark, great storytelling, and no need for excessive jump scares.
Even though it's technically a "kids movie" this and Into the Spiderverse are both still honestly two of my favorite films ever. Thank you so much for bringing attention to this masterpiece!
it's the "stilted" animation. I find there's a certain charm of animating something without completely smooth frames. I think that's why I like the trailer for the new puss in boots so much.

The most scary thing in Coraline is the atmosphere. This sorta desert place with just a few houses, we don't even see Whybe's house for example. It always seems like it's a raining day in a vague place with woods and just an old house. So its does give that loneliness feeling, like when u r homealone, and it rains and the power goes off, u have none to talk to, u can't rlly go outside, there isn't much to do and u r just lonely, as a lonely kid that grew up mostly out of a sociable environment, it is pretty scary
Also I absolutely love how even after you watch this movie you can’t really get bored of it because there are so many theories and small details

Love this movie! The snow globe that had Coraline’s parents in it had two bears in the beginning when first shown. Then, after Coraline returns back to her world after defeating the Beldam (and retrieving the snow globe), it’s broken and there are no bears in it. Bears = Coraline’s parents

You're not wrong entirely about the Tunnel between worlds. It is a living thing that can consume entities that get lost inside. Its older than Beldam herself and even she is afraid of it.
Ya know I read the book first as a child and that will always be my favorite. The only thing that bothers me with this movie is the made up character Wybie. The book is SOOO much creepier because she’s all alone.
That’s probably why they added him in, to make it more kid friendly.

I was on the verge of tears when he started talking about his wife in such a genuine and loving way while pointing out the similarities with Coraline.
It warmed my heart knowing why he loves this movie so much, that part is definitely my favourite one out of the whole video, it gives a really personal and emotional feel that adds a special touch to a movie review.
I hope he will continue to talk about movies he truly enjoys.

YES! I love movies with creepy atmospheres. I've always been the type to get overly scared, and I hated whenever a scary moment would happen in a movie that wasn't scary throughout. I want _genuine_ creep factor. Coraline achieved that, and then some. A _whole lot more_ some.

I'm not gonna lie, the Other Mother's final form and the moment with the web is my absolute favourite thing in the entire movie. I still want a figurine or something like that of her. I live for that needley creepy stuff, it's the best.
The moment that really had me shaking was the part of the movie where coraline was trying to get away from the other mother and she was screaming, "DON'T LEAVE ME! DON'T LEAVE ME! I'LL DIE WITHOUT YOU!" as she continuously banged on the door and it got nearer to Coraline with every bang until Coraline just barely managed to close it in time.
Just going to note, when the two sisters give Coraline the lil' seeing stone thingy, that's probably a reference to a seeing stone in many folkore. An object (usually a stone with a hole carved through it) with which one can look through to see things beyond this world. There's a book of an alternate Arthurian story called "The Seeing Stone" that has it. There's also some other books/movies that have it as well, like "Spiderwick Chronicles" where one who cannot see the other world of faeries can use it to see that which they hide from human eyes (which I HOPE you'll cover one day in a video, PLEASE, it's heckin' cool), hell it's even a thing in the Star Wars universe, albeit not quite like the stones we've seen here.
I was OBSESSED with this movie when it came out, I dressed as coraline for Halloween, I got the figures, I have a replica of her doll. I even have pajamas based on hers I got not long ago from hot topic. I also saw it in theatres 3 times, which to this day is the most I’ve seen a movie in theaters. In the summer as a kid I even went to the Laika studios in Portland and saw one of the movie models of coraline.(which is way bigger than you’d expect)
It was my absolute favorite movie when I was a 5th grader. I relate a lot to coraline like your wife does, I feel pushed off and ignored a lot. Just wanting some attention and love, more excitement in life. I also relate a ton to her snarky sassy attitude since that’s how I am honestly.
This movie meant a lot to me growing up and it still does. It’s still one of my absolute favorites to this day. I’m glad others appreciate it for the amazing movie it is ❤️

Finally someone acknowledges this film as the masterpiece is. It's extremely annoying how the large amount of Coraline content here on UA-cam is limited to people recognizing how creepy it is but stopping there. Guys, you know that something can be scary AND a masterpiece at the same time, right?
This movie was never that scary to me, but I love Coraline. I read the book in a day because one it's short and two I could not put it down! The movie is fantastic and with a beautiful soundtrack.

I actually really relate with this movie as well. My middle brother passed away awhile ago and we use to watch this all the time. His favorite part was the "long face" part and he would love when I would mimic it. I still remember his laugh and his smile when I did it. Didn't expect to cry today...aside from that I think im om the same boat as your wife. I was ignored and shut down as a kid as well. Passed around between hosueholds and barely managed to pull myself together
