      My daughter's dad is Italian, and he was laughing so hard when i showed him this sketch, cause he understands how Italian must sound in the ears of foreigners. And may i add that he is the most patriotic person i've ever known, and the Italian language is like the finest art to him. I myself is Danish, and if someone from another country made a fun sketch of my language, i am sure i would laugh hard about it, cause i know the rest of the world would think my language sound like someone are trying to speak with a potato in the throat. People nowadays are so affraid of offending others, due to wokeness on steriods in the western societies.

      You are so right , it's just great British comedy which makes people laugh. It is not meant to offend , it is just made to make people laugh. Something sadly missing in this day and age.

    Catherine Tate is a well known British comedian. Yes, this was a comedy sketch but I feel you’re killing it. The chinese woman held up the taping because she was laughing so much. NO-ONE TOOK OFFENCE because it WAS FUNNY and really it was all about her, the translator displaying ignorance and stereotyping the people at the table.

  • @GrilloTheFlightless
    @GrilloTheFlightless 4 місяці тому +51

    It’s the sort of thing that many would say is offensive. But they don’t understand that the joke isn’t on the people from different nationalities. They don’t come off badly. The joke is on Catherine Tate’s character and how she doesn’t realise how inappropriate she’s being. Love it.

    • @OldDevlin
      @OldDevlin 4 місяці тому +7

      Aye, it's satire. It's taking the micky out of people who have an abundance of confidence, and little to no cultural awareness when it comes to people from other nations. It's making a mockery of the idiots who fall for racial and xenophobic stereotypes, rather than it being a joke aimed at the people from those nations.

    • @storageheater
      @storageheater 4 місяці тому +3

      plus it's a really careful escalation - she starts out with the safer ones and moves towards the more controversial ones - imagine if it had started at the other end of the table. And it helps that the people she's talking to aren't offended, they're just confused. I think it's definitely very careful about what it's doing really

    • @GrilloTheFlightless
      @GrilloTheFlightless 4 місяці тому +3

      @@storageheater Agreed. The moment when her colleague puts his head in his hands speaks volumes here. It’s clear that we’re no supposed to condone her characters actions. I think that was an important little addition to make sure the right tone was set.

    What i find most funny whenever someone reacts to this there is a much bigger reaction and shock to the Asian and African sections which i feel is a sad reflection of our times. Loved Catherine Tate show back in the day and so many of the sketches still make me giggle today

    • @faithpearlgenied-a5517

      Because Africans and Asians experience more racism and people looking down on them in majority white countries than white people do. Maybe that's why they're a tad more sensitive to racism or perceived racism. You know, a bit like why gay people may be a tiny bit more upset by homophobia than a staight person whose never been criticised for their sexuality? It isn't really difficult to work out why unless you're a moron.
      That being said, this comedy sketch is very funny and clearly not racist. But to act like you don't know why certain races may be a bit more sensitive about racial stuff is just silly.

    Yay Catherine Tate! I have all three seasons of her show on my computer. I must have watched them probably 10 times over the years since it's been off the air. She is hysterical and this is one of the funniest Skits the other skits that she does is a character called Nan who is hysterically funny. I'm an American but I love almost all British humor. I think it's because they can get awy with a lot more. America still has a stick up it's ass. All of my favorite humorous television and movies come from Britain.

      Based on 70 years London experience and making allowances for individual personalities and exceptions to the rule then I would say that is Spot On :)

      Ty for explaining. As a kid watching this i was either shocked or just baffled. When you get context it makes more sense and is actually very intelligent and funny 😂

    Classic Spanish in Spain is called Castellano. They tend to pronounce Z and C (in some positions) as TH (like Thigh, e.g.). And their S's are almost like Portuguese SH (hissing). And some other features that make Castellano sound different from the Spanish as spoken in Latin America. Wee, in Latin America, in different countries the speak Spanish differently. Spanish speaking people can, probably, tell if a person is from Argentina, Mexico or Cuba or from other regions of the world. And don't get me started on Spanglish 🙂And the sexiest Spanish is from Julio Iglesias. Thanks.

    Catherine Tate. Try any of her "Nan" sketches. You might need the subtitles on though Britt.

    This Catherine Tate character says "well, I can do that" to any impossible request...and she's useless at everything.

    There's a flip side to this sketch. As Brits Catherine is mocking that in general our success at learning new languages isn't great (You may well have the same problem in America). This sketch is as much skitting the fact that some of us think if we copy the sound of the accent we'll be able to communicate with the person. Classic Comedy.

    I think the funniest thing about this skit is that after it, cases have emerged of people completely blagging a job as sign language interpreters and basically doing exactly this but just waving their hands around randomly. There are a few videos, online and if I recall, one of them was interpreting at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, and a recent example with the Tampa police.
    We used to have a show over here in the U.K. in the 70s called “Mind your language” which was set in a night class for adults learning English which today, is recognised as being highly offensive because the humour was 90% just making fun of different languages and their accents, with the people playing to the stereotypes of those countries (so the French woman was obsessed with sex etc)

    British humour at its very best. Unfortunately, nowadays you could never do this, too many wokes and people who's main objective is to be offended by anything and everything. What a humourless world we know live in.
