The setting is deliberately evoking the times of 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland. A time of hardline attitudes on both sides, whether Catholic/Republican or Protestant/Loyalist. There were political murals marking territory and people in both communities serving jail time for various terrorist offences. The communities at the heart of the conflict were particularly dogmatic, hard-faced and uncompromising and 'the other' was demonised. This parody is genius. Especially as it's deliberately non-specific, so could be either side. The accent just adds to it it, lol. A place and period renowned for intolerance, displaying pure acceptance. :)
very well put - this is pt 1 of 2 parts, in this first one I'd say 90% Protestant (the obvious accent inflection, Dad is modelling a British battle tank, boys watching English football), Part 2 though they have a Catholic Priest - plays to all audiences beautifully as a metaphor against intolerance
Fair enough, but I wouldn't call it non-specific, as the music in the final scene sounds like 'The Sash my Father Wore', a Protestant Orange song about the Battle of the Boyne etc.

You have to be British or Irish to get this one fully. It's set in northern Ireland (not Ireland) during what looks like a parody of the 1980s. The troubles were in full swing back then. That was a time in Northern Ireland when the country was experiencing a proxy civil war. Two sides of the community at war essentially over whether Northern Ireland should reunite with Ireland or stay seperate in the UK. Northern Ireland was deeply religious back then and suffering a lot. Hence the scene has a dark, grimey, crime feel to it. The march at the end is a parody of the marches both communities used to do. One side marching for Irish unification and the other for loyalty to the Queen. Hence the music playing. But it is instead a gay pride march but has the grimey and dark feel of the marches from the troubles which is nothing like the colorful inviting atmosphere of a pride parade. It's just taking the p*ss out of 1970s/80s Northern Ireland by showing it though the lens of a gay character lol. A place once known as the most dangerous and divided place in Europe (Northern Ireland, UK) canshowing love and acceptance instead. Even the mural at the end is a parody of murals they used to paint to show you were leaving a place that was more pro unification into a place anti unification. Ps, just so you know Ireland isn't like this today lol. Ireland is very modern and gay friendly. But Northern Ireland shown here is still in the UK not part of Ireland, but it's troubled past is behind it.
A Mexican friend, the youngest of five, told his mother he was gay. She said "So you are the one I get to KEEP?" LOL She complained about "losing" the other four to wives
The last song while they were marching was The Sash- a Unionist (=Protestant pro-British) song, and the joke is the incongruity of culturally conservative Unionist traditions with the gay agenda.

As Americans, are you familiar with the expression Woolly Woofter? That's where that comes from. I suspect it might be cockney. Like Apples and Pears For Stairs. Don't know for certain though.
I've been to catholic weddings in Ireland where the bride and groom have their 2 and 4 year old children along, the congregation is a mix of hetro and gay couples and everyone gets along just fine.
There's another longer version of this video where they've substituted Colin Morgan for the original 'John' and it leaves no doubt in anyone's minds that they're from the Roman Catholic / Republican side of the divide in Northern Ireland especially when she refers to their local priest as 'Father' who then winks at 'John' immediately after she tells him about her son's sexuality. They manage to take a 'dig' at both 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland as well as at the Roman Catholic church all within the space of 9 and a half minutes. You might even recognise Colin Morgan because he played the titular character in 'Merlin'. 👍😁👍

Check out Harry Enfield(the dad in this) - Woman Know Your Limits. It's utterly hilarious.
That's not Harry Enfield, but a good suggestion to watch
I guess there IS such a thing as "too supportive" after all lmao
Hey, fun video, first time visitor here! ;) There were some sketch shows at the beginning of the naughties like Smack the Pony, Titty Bang Bang, 3 Non Blondes and Miss Jocelyn, along side Little Britain (which some of hasn't aged very well to be fair..) And of course the inimitable French and Saunders, the brains behind Absolutely Fabulous... check them out if you haven't seen them! All the best from the UK!
That sketch is actually quite a bit longer, and some of the missing bits are hilarious. Hope you can get to see the rest of it
I find it incredible that it is news that some celeb came out as gay! Who cares!? Why is that news. Anybody who cares has got personal issues. I lived/worked in NY for a time and the gay community was the kindest I'd ever met.
You both HAVE to watch "Women know your limits" that's gonna be uncomfortable reaction
Haha cool that you did this one, so few have reached to it and it soooo funny 😂
..but have to say wtf was with that long ass game of thrones bit in the middle?!
7:00 - That is not the actress who portrayed Catyln Stark.
It is
Try ‘Not the 5 o’clock news’. Had rowan Atkinson in it. Absolute belter!
Catherine Tate's Nan movie has just premiered in the UK.
This woman is fucking very, very,VERY funny!👌😍😂🤣
I'm subscribing now over 2 months after you posted this. I'm then going to see if she watched and did a reaction to the final ep of "Game of Thrones". I'm sure that would be HILARIOUS!!!!!
I came for Catherine Tate and got Game of Thrones.....Two for the price of one, what a channel, what a couple!!
Definitely need to watch the nan ones, especially the one with the guy who has a hand prosthesis.
Have you seen the one where the psycho investigator, that breaks out into the song Brass In My Pocket... UA-cam search, Catherine Tate Nuts Detective HD Part 1
Thanks I needed a Laugh! Be made Blissful everyone!
12:42 was it Little Britain you're trying to think of?
John wasn't on a date in the second clip. That was just him and a straight friend watching football 😂
It's set in the loyalist/protestant community of Northern Ireland who have a habit of having 'Orange marches' every July 12th to commemorate a King called Billy who won a battle at the river Boyne in 1690. They do this by lighting fires made of wooden pallets and car tyres and generally destroying their community.
If you're after new/old comedy to watch, have a look at 'Harry Enfield and Chums'.. Lots and lots of characters to enjoy :D
Best wishes from Wales.
Another great reaction your majesty 👏
never seen this skit before thanks
she got a movie out of the character she does (Nan) ( nan the movie it called)
have you seen the christmas skit were she is visited by the 3 ghost of christmas (based on scooged its very funny)
david tennant an actor she worked with when she worked on Dr. who is the ghost of christmas present
Why is your track censored? This was BBC comedy not censored on Tv
A 'Woofter' is a nicer way of calling somebody a poofter. I have also heard somebody refer to another as a wooly woofter.
Did you ever watch Boemerang? It's very very old but I could watch that a 100 times in a row and still cry laughing.
The Catherine Tate Show - The Enigmatic Cop... The Best Sketch I've seen on the Catherine Tate Show Forsure
I think she’s thinking about The Mash Report - it’s an SNL style show and hilarious. Stars Ellie Taylor who plays Sassy in Ted Lasso.
As Americans, are you familiar with the expression Woolly Woofter? That's where that comes from. I suspect it might be cockney.
Like Apples and Pears For Stairs.
Don't know for certain though.
Harry Enfield's Gay Son worth a watch, similar vain.
Coming from Northern Ireland this is just great love it
I've been to catholic weddings in Ireland where the bride and groom have their 2 and 4 year old children along, the congregation is a mix of hetro and gay couples and everyone gets along just fine.
Catherine Tate is a sketch based comic - a very good one - been quiet for a while now
Did you know there's a part 2 to this?
Graham Norton show was it Queen Boomer?
Keep it the way it is otherwise I will get confused and miss your posts 🏴🏴🏴
Your so right about game of thrones. The show built Danny up to be the hero and she was just another dictator. I loved it.
Catherine does a great Belfast accent.
Republicans marching to The sash my father wore?
Why, @@kevanwillis4571, was your dad's sash made up out of an old rainbow flag? If so he certainly kept that one quiet about himself, didn't he?
Colin was the original but went off to be Merlin, which was part filmed in France
the 2 lads on the sofa are just mates watching football
Queen Boomer might be thinking of The Fast Show. Actually Johnny Depps favourite show, he was in a sketch too, Called 'ooh suits you sir'
shes done a film in the nan character, its actually a lot better than i thought. its quite deep
Hi guys you got to check out Sean....,R.i.p. Met him before he was a comic..so when he goes to a country park and go for a cream tea....one line will level you😂😂😂😂Grant...
This is the first time I've Seen Catherine Tate do this sketch... its funny and glad it was enjoyed by yourselves. Sometimes I feel that Americans do not get English humour as it can be a little sarcastic (my sense of humour and not everyone likes it, but hey ho !!) I think that you would enjoy the sketches as the Nan much better. She plays the old Londoner old lady with a cockney accent, and of course as you get older you get away with saying so much more.. because you're OLD.. when you do manage to watch it ENJOY.
I grew up knowing lots of 'nans' her portrayal is hilariously accurate.
I’d totally forgotten, as kids in Aus, we got call Baby Boomers, well I did lol. U are still talking, love Tate, she’s as mad as March hare - whatever that means😂
I had a feeling this might turn into a Game Of Thrones discussion 🤣.
Oh and to my fellow Boomerangs, Top Gear/The Grand Tour anyone?
Try the 4 Yorkshire men sketch - there's pre python with Marty Feldman, Tim Brooke Taylor, John Cleese and Graham Chapman. Later Monty Python did it just as well.
Was that series called Little Britain ?
Catherine Tate's agent sent her a song I wrote called Just Like Nan (on Catherine Tate) I was pleased she heard it, mum rip now.
They tried to cancel her!
Live at the Apollo is maybe the show from taxi time
More of a reaction to the end of Game of Thrones
This is a great sketch!
I never stop laughing at this one 🤣
STEVIE RIKS DOING SIMON AND GARFUNKAL. BOTH CHARACTERS. SOUND OF SILENCE. 🤣🤣🤣
If you're watching this and you're American and you don't get why this is funny, replace the accent and setting with that of Alabama, but keep the sketch the same. There you go.
You should watch the second part of the gay son with Catherine Tate, a different actor playing John but still very funny.
