The best one was the African guy because you could see he was almost cracking up, holding it in. 5 more seconds and he would've been done. Cut, start again. Apparently though it was the Chinese lady who was the biggest problem, she couldn't stop laughing and they had to do multiple takes.
They'd all been in the studio canteen before filming and the African guy got the wrong order. He said to the waitress, "this is not my sandwich ". Catherine threw it in ad lib. See his face 😂
Showed my Nigerian uncle this a while back he collapsed laughing at the last one and said "no, no, she isn't accurate, everytime we eat the sandwich and say, where is my sandwich" 🤣 he's fcking nuts, fav uncle by a mile.
I don't know if this is true or not but apparently in a break between filming, the actors were eating from a finger buffet and the African character did actually say the 'line' this is not my sandwich after he put it down and the picked up the wrong one again or something along those lines and so on this particular take of filming, Catherine Tate added in the line as an ad lib. Which would explain why he broke character and could not keep a straight face.
@@seanscanlon9067 Catherine Tate said in a DVD extra that the original line in the script was "This is not my suitcase" - But they wasn't allowed to use that line, so it was changed to sandwich.
To put it into context, the character she plays in this sketch is one that always says that she can do it, no matter what the problem is. It's not that she's dumb she just oversells her abilities to please or impress people.
@@jedislap8726 I don't need context...you know what I mean. People treat comedy as always having to be overly smart and never daring to cross in to the boundaries of other groups of people. This was funny without being insulting or demeaning BECAUSE she's an idiot. Anyone who tries to talk to someone in another language like that is an idiot lmao...that's clearly part of the character, even as you described it. Anyway, it was freakin' hilarious.
The Chinese segment took 12 takes as the Chinese Lady kept laughing:) The Black Guy almost went at the end. You MUST watch:Catherine Tate(The Intterpretor) in other sketches in her weekly sketch show like her character NAN....:)
This Catherine Tate character says, "I can do that" to any request. Catherine Tate's show was a series of skits of different characters...most of them with a tenuous grip on reality.
when the skit was happening and Kathrine doing her thing everyone was laughing ,they had to do so many takes so believe it they took it lightly some occasions they laughed so much they had to take time out.
Like others have said the Chinese ks do couldn’t stop laughing during the filming. The guy at the end was the same. I recently learnt the reason she said “this is not my sandwich” is because during lunch after he was handed the wrong one. Catherine Tate decided to through it into the sketch.
Catherine Tate has to be the funniest women ever. Here in the States women comedians routine seems to be "I'm a slut". It's not even funny anymore. Catherine if you listen to a lot of her comedy she is amazing.
Blimey - you got it!! The comedy in this is how someone who's done a two week course Teaching English as a second language course thinks she can translate 7 languages
Apparently it took 16 takes,12 of which were due to the Chinese lady bursting into laughter, rest were the African guy. The quip about the "It's not my sandwich" is referring to the cast at lunch break and he was given the wrong sandwich and she included it in the script which made him react with a rye smile ...
New relationship? So sweet what you're bringing out in each other. You each think the other is the best thing ever. It's all I your energy. It's so nice to see. Bless.

One show you must look at is “Yes Minister” A British comedy series that take a look at how ministers in government work. It’s from the 1980’s and still so true today.
Of course at the time this sketch aired around 2006/07 it was just the "Translator Sketch". The Offensive tag has only been added in the last few years as the woke brigade reared their head. This sketch is more to do with how dumb the Catherine Tate character is rather than anything else.
you must do the "Drunk bride" ua-cam.com/video/zZvUO_CigmY/v-deo.html and the "Posh mum" episodes of Catherine Tate if you haven t done them yet....or the "Not drunk enough"....they re hilarious...
Apparently the Chinese lady could not stop laughing during this and it took many takes to film. The 'African' guy was also close to laughing as you can see from this clip.
Catherine Tate has created some amazing characters in her sketch show. You should check out the Two Pilots sketches in the Armstrong And Miller show, another British sketch show.
Hi from AUSTRALIA, this was so funny. A song you should definitely check out is Wheeler Walker jnr - Family Tree. But this is song that if you play it in your car make sure there is NO kids listening.
You two are adorable. Tate is a National Treasure over here. Bloody funny and a damned good actress to boot. If you haven't seen her Derek Faye, Gay Son, Detective Sam Speed sketches, yet, they're well worth checking out! 😉😉
The African guy was having lunch before filming and his lunch came and he said this is not my sandwich ? Catherine Tate added it in and he nearly burst into laughter, also the Chinese lady couldn't stop laughing and took many takes before she stopped
This is an example of how the world has changed over the years. If this was aired today they would cancel it after the first few episodes. We don't live on a rock anymore. We live on a snowflake
There were so many comedic elements to this. For example. The character said she’d done a TEFL (teach English as a foreign language) course in her gap year. A gap year is taking a year out of education between finishing school at 18, and going to university at 19. A TELF course is clever, but basic. It can be completed in a week, and in no way does it qualify anyone to be a translator.
i always say laugh at the bad thing that happen in life...you guys would LOVE richard simmons,on whos line is that anyway..ive NEVER in my 40 years of life heard an audience laugh that hard! thanks guys:)
Hi good people. There's a really unpolitically correct gem she does called Katherine Tate Nan anger management.U won't believe what U see & hear.U may have to go to Daily Motion to see the whole thing, I'm not sure. All the best
This “character” has multiple skits where something happens and she always says “oh, I can do that”, but she can’t. There’s a band one with her playing the drums, and a tennis one. But this is the funniest. You should also check out her character “Nan Taylor”. The Christmas sketch is even better than this.
Please do more Catherine Tate! Especially “Lauren”. I don’t think u guys can get most of them in the USA, block by bbc. Love u both now I know ur names, I have cup of soup
Apparently the last one the African? He kept bursting out laughing and they had to do multiple takes. If you look at his face you can see he’s about to burst out laughing!
Hey Guys. I know what you're thinking ' Oh god, it's that English guy again! Anyone, at any time who thinks this is "racist," is missing the point entirely. Tate, like Sacha Baron Cohen and The Pub Landlord, more often than not are mocking people's attitudes. Some people, especially in the case of Al Murray (and Alf Garnett) think that their humour endorses their prejudices!
I'm Italian and I understood every word she said. She's a pro!

yes he was nearly laughing

Brilliant!
When this video first came out, I was dating someone who is a professional interpreter. We loved it.
This took hours to film because the chinese lady laughed so much
I love how the brother at the end is trying so hard not to laugh.
The fact they left it in shows how many takes they must have done where he actually did laugh and they had to cut 😂

Apparently they had to stop filming several times, because the oriental lady kept cracking-up.

I totally agree with her the Italian was the best… my second fave was Swedish.. but most of them were hilarious lolol
Each of them had trouble filming for laughing. Enjoy and embrace all cultures cause we're all different and funny to others
Thank you for seeing how ridiculous the sketch was. It's still funny.
Such a good sketch very funny .
Another point, the ‘character’ she plays does this in other job roles. She’s one of those people who say “I can’t do that” to everything 😂
