my issue with the timeless children is it retcons so much about the Dr's character - it makes the Doctor so important, when that undermines why I, and so many others, love the Doctor. They represent someone who is an outcast, an unimportant rebel from their planet in a broken TARDIS that just went round to spread kindness and saving people. By making the Doctor important like that, you are undermining the relatability of the character.
Not to mention the DOZENS of plot holes and plot contrivances it causes.

So... Is *this* the final one or can we expect more?? Hoping for the latter... Great episode. I'm more inclined to like this era than most seem to so obviously don't agree with you on everything here but it's SO REFRESHING to see you discuss all your misgivings so reasonably. Not that I expected any less. Fantastic work as usual

I think the dragonfire cliffhanger could actually be commentary on how stupid cliffhangers can be especially in the classic era cause when the next episode would air it would have at least some on the last scene at the start of the episode after the opening credits making the cliffhanger pointless in my opinion

I hope we get more of this podcast, I love it! As for Jodie's Era, I find myself agreeing heavily with you. I was SO ready to see what they were going to do, but it fell so flat for me. Burying Jodie under 3 companions was a massive mistake.

Jodie was great. I tried to stay positive and convince myself I liked her era (I really enjoyed Rosa, for example), but then Kerblam! hit and I couldn't deny it anymore, this era wasn't for me. Which I guess comes with the territory of being a Doctor Who fan. We all have our pet eras we love and hate, and I finally have my least favorite lol

Really enjoy these and do hope you continue with them (respect if you choose not to though but would be a shame).
I understand that feeling of not wanting to be mean about Doctor Who. It’s a show I find myself defending more often then I should but some of the stuff during the Chibnall era made it very difficult. I stand by though that there are some great episodes in here and Whittaker I consistently liked as the Doctor; it was honestly just that the writing wasn’t always there for me.

I have a group of friends jumping back into Dr.who after exiting when Capaldi hit his last series. So far they really like Jodie, I am partially convinced that a Dr who fatigue was setting in with the audience. It reminds me of Trek when Star Trek: Enterprise aired and people hated it with a passion, that fandom has since flipped and i see more admirers of Enterprise now then ever. My hope is the positives of Jodie/Chibnall era will begin to outweigh its faults and the fanbase will start to discuss that run in a more positive light.

The cliffhanger problem was exacerbated in Season 22 (Colins first) in international markets because instead of being a series of 2-parters (and 1 3-parter) of 45 minutes each story was cut into 4/6 25 minute episodes and the editors had to find the cliffhangers and they STRUGGLED! (my favourite example is Veangence on Varos where the new episode 1 cliffhanger is the TARDIS arriving. There's no complications in it landing, it just lands)

It's interesting how there are more, as with most TV these days, mini cliffhangers pre-credits, so, TECHNICALLY they mostly all have a cliffhanger of sorts, and they hold more weight as they lead into the main thrust of the story!

Very glad you decided to post this after all.
First, let me say I really (REALLY!) didn't like Chibnall's reworking of the early mythology of the show. But I never had a problem with Jodie as The Doctor. She's a great actress; just look at some of her movies and other broadcast work. But as an actress, she's handed a script and has to do her best with it. When given good, or even just moderately decent material, she shined.
Demons of the Punjab was decent, Kerblam was fun, The Witchfinder was fun, and It Takes You Away was the kind of bonkers story DW needs to do every once in a while, because no other franchise could do such a thing.
The Haunting of Villa Diodati was brilliant, atmospheric, historic, just lovely Who. And Spyfall Part 1 was perfect DW. As good as it gets.
But as is often the case, and this applies to Flux as well, Chibnall could create a great set up, and he knew how to build the tension and interest, but he never really delivers the payoff in the conclusion that makes it all worthwhile. Like the whole timeless child arc - what am I, what are we to make of this? Well, nothing really. Just forget it and move on.
Eve of the Daleks is another good script and good performance. And I loved The Power of the Doctor for all the predictable reasons: old Doctors, old companions, old messes tidied up, the promise and hope of something new, and if I didn't cry when Jodie regenerated, she was nevertheless game and glorious.
Given time (such a thing to say about this show, right?) some of her work will be re-evaluated and appreciated more than it is right now. Deservedly so.

Well I do agree with u about her stuff being reevaluated over time cause i think once people finally decide to judge her era on there own instead of letting the hate train for her era tell them what to think of it it might get liked a bit more cause as someone who watches the classic era also her era is as bad as the hate train wants us to believe it is that doesn’t mean it’s perfect cause i have my issues with it and Jodie became a part of my top 4 doctors cause I could see what they were trying to do with the era that was try to make it feel like the classic era with a modern budget as to why each season 11 episode felt self contained the focus was taken off the doctor as a main character like in he 60’s where he was a supporting basically how thry got from place to place

Power of the Doctor feels like it doesn't know what it wants to be because Chibnall was writing it with different things in mind. He had to write a departure for Jodie that also works as a Centenary celebration that also works as a pseudo 60th special because at this point there were no plans after Chibnall left, and it also has to work as a potential final episode of Doctor Who ever. All of this also had to be done under Covid restrictions. I don't blame Chibnall for trying to make it a 60th special. I would've probably done the same thing.

I totally agree and a lot of people didn’t notice that the master’s plot was reused from the movie cause in the movie the basic plot was that the master was going to try and steal the regenerations the doctor had left at that point but even flux and legend of the sea devils have the pandemic restrictions feel to them legends of the sea devils even more so and we were more then likely dealing with a newly pregnant Jodie so that could’ve complicated things especially in the pandemic restrictions department case legends of the sea devils is oddly shot in place and that could’ve been why and I think her decision to depart when she did was probably to wanting to expand her family cause of actually trying to convince or actually find out that she was pregnant cause I have heard rumors that she was actually pregnant in the specials but nothing officially confirmed

First of all, so glad you’re back! Secondly, I completely agree that I just didn’t connect with any of the Chibnall era characters emotionally. I think a lot of the story problems would be easier to overlook if I did, but because everyone is so bland, the plot is all there is to think about.

  • @rsienicki
    @rsienicki 8 місяців тому +1

Regarding Nyssa and Tegan: I think in the Season 20 short it was mentioned that in other reality they are together. So in the main contunity they are just pals.
And when it comes to Chibnall, I think he just don't work good under pressure. Because there was a lot of good ideas there, but I felt like he didn't have enough time to execute them properly or even think them through. I've read RTD book and heard interviews with Moffat and I feel like they were constantly under pressure, but somehow they thrived in it. Feels like Chibnall didn't. Hence - the episode where they filmed the first draft.

    • @samuelbarber6177
      @samuelbarber6177 7 місяців тому

Chibnall is a writer with a lot of really good ideas, ideas that would probably get a great fifty minute episode of Doctor Who out of. Unfortunately, he seems like a writer who just can’t decide what to do with them, so he just throws them all in at once and expects it to work out. A typical Chibnall story will just start in Ancient Mesopotamia or something, and then also have a plot in modern Sheffield or something as if these two things are at all related. Granted, this mostly started with Moffat, but it’s so unnecessary. Like, why did a lot of Power of the Doctor need to be set in Russia in 1917? Especially when so much else was going on?

My headcanon for any Big Finish is history got rewritten a bit at some point, probably when Eleven rebooted the universe.
My 3 favorite Whitaker episode are Demons of the Punjab, Praxeus, and Power of The Doctor.
I wish he got to finish Ranskoor Av Kolos. I really like some of the concepts he was trying to play with and I think it could have been fantastic. Simply moving the reveal of the villain's plan to much earlier would add some much needed tension.

  • @whatsup4825
    @whatsup4825 8 місяців тому +2

Only because you mean well doesn’t mean you’re a good person. The 13th Doctor always spoke about hope and the best of humanity yet persecuted the Master’s skin colour and was hopelessly closed off and socially awkward. Kudos if the writers chose to develop this contradiction, but they didn’t. The whole era is a shrug. 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • @samuelbarber6177
    @samuelbarber6177 7 місяців тому

Whittaker’s era was the first one I actually watched as it aired, with Series 12 being the first series I actually watched live as a Doctor Who fan, so it will always hold a special place in my heart for that. I genuinely liked a lot of it. Even if it wasn’t all up to par, I still had a great time with it. Spyfall for instance may have been overly convoluted and silly, but I had a ton of fun watching it, and you know what, it’s just great to have new Doctor Who on. I don’t usually watch regular Television, but with Series 12 and 13 I really liked the feeling of getting a new episode every week. I also really liked the way the era handled most of the Historicals, not to mention, I much prefer the way Chibnall characterised villains like The Daleks, or the Lone Cyberman. I also think Chibnall’s fine writer, but not a great show runner. He really needs a leash, because too many of his stories get way too big for their boots, and he seems to think a major reveal or cameo will substitute for a story. The Timeless Child, I thought was an interesting concept, but they just never did anything with it. That’s my biggest problem with it, it just felt like it went no where.
As for Whittaker herself? I think she does fine in the role. She does have a few problems, mostly due to some of the writing. I think where Chibnall failed was he didn’t really characterise her consistently enough. She felt like she kept being pulled in several different directions, from Matt Smith silliness, to Sylvester McCoy cold darkness, to just making speeches that often contradict the actual messaging of the episodes. It’s like… ‘heh?’.
The companions? I liked them. Bradley Walsh and John Bishop were funny enough.
So yeah, I mostly liked it, but I did have issues, and it definitely gets too much hate.

19:11 I always found the debate over ratings to be insane. I remember someone saying Series 11 had the highest ratings "on average" and thinking that would shut everyone up, not realizing that there's an obvious flaw in that argument, being that it's only the highest because the first two episodes happened to be pretty high in ratings. Then people go back and forth and forth and back on rebuttal after rebuttal.
It's also crazy how people act like the fact that 6 million people didn't stick around MUST mean they didn't like it, or thought it was this, or whatever. As if 10 million people watching are all a hive mind NPC that will either watch the show because they like it or not watch it because they didn't, and they have nothing else going on in their lives.
Furthermore, it's not even our job to obsess over ratings- it's the BBC's job.

The thing I don't get about NuWho normally it's a 45min story in reference to two parters, yet when compared to classic Who 45min episodes. NuWho two parters lacks character development in some cases. Look at Revelation of the Daleks character development was through the roof you got a good feel for the characters unlike many NuWho stories. The one issue which puts me right of NuWho is how nearly every companion has wanted to whip their underwear off and want a relationship with the Doctor. Doing it once was "Meh OK" but when it becomes a trope with nearly every companion it got so boring. I've heard many go "But this would happen in real life" I don't care about real life I want to be invested in the story and how the Doctor is going to crush the enemy - not sit through multiple scenes which come straight out of Eastenders. They can create amazing companions without this angle. Yes there was attachment to companions in the past 3rd Doctor and Jo esp when she left. You could argue some of his behaviour was either an over protective Dad figure or Jealous of the situation.

100% agreed with what you said regarding the 13th era, Jodie is a fantastic actress but feels underutilised and the writing is definitely as good as Chibnall could do but not as good as Moffat/Russell. I'm just excited for BF to redeem Jodie's Doctor like they did with Colin's. I'm sure she'll eventually become one of my favorites years from now after listening to a bunch of audios. But for now, the writing was just too bad even though she, herself, knew how to play the Doctor. And absolutely could when she was given the chance to shine in her own show.

As we approached the beginning of this era, I was eager and hopeful. But it turns out it didn't appeal. As early as _The Ghost Monument_ I was thinking it might not be to my taste. At least I can have things like _It Takes You Away,_ which I think is genuinely great. _The Haunting of Villa Diodati_ has a lot of good qualities.

I am a lover of this era, but I understand a lot of the negative things you're saying. The exception are the things you said about The Battle of Ranskoor av Kolos and hope, because I think you're really misjudging both here. Like, The Tsuranga Condundrum establishes what hope means for this incarnation of the Doctor, and it is not how you described it. And Battle is an extremely weird choice for a final episode, but once you get over that, there is a lot of worth in it. It is a beautiful meditation on faith.

The last two episodes of Flux have far far too much going on to make them coherent. The series literally lost two episodes but Chibnall for some reason had to keep in the "Fetch your dog" thread that went absolutely fucking nowhere. I personally suspect the Doctor got split into 3 in the finale because of the lost episodes, and basically having to fit everything that was supposed to be done in three episode into just one

An enjoyable podcast, got to agree with you on Jodie’s era, it’s hit and miss, but I think it aims it’s content at a younger audience. It’s difficult to get a show to appeal to a wide age range. Who gets it right most of the time. I feel it just missed the mark on Jodie’s era.
I hope you continue to do content like this Josh, you have a great manner for broadcasts, and a very appealing tone.
I think a Jo Martin spin off would be fantastic

'...I dunno. I'm just the lead writer.'
Incredible hahaha. So true though, my main issue with the Chibnall era is how much missed potential there is - there's some genuinely great ideas in there somewhere, it just continually fails to come to the surface and remains unrealised.

I was excited to finally have a female Doctor, Jodie had so much potential but definitely a lot of other things behind the scenes even before the pandemic I think are to blame for the decline in viewership and quality. Not a fan of the execution of The Timeless Child stuff, it could have been much better if there was an end goal at least and not just an unresolved idea. I do kind of think the Doctor should have stayed female as going back to male could be seen as "well that didn't work so we can't have a female Doctor ever again" but since we have got RTD back I have faith that things will be great, and then when we have another female Doctor hopefully she will be treated and written fantastically.

Chris Chibnall refusing to start on a Christmas special spoilt Capaldi's regneration. Then only doing three series meant that Whittaker's exit feels compromised. If they had stuck around another year, Whittaker could have seen out the anniversary and then handed over directly to Gatwa.

Although I only want the Timeless Child to be passing mentions in RTD2, not going back to retcon it or anything, I do hope RTD does one day bring back Jo Martin for something! Maybe a multi-Doctor for the 20th anniversary of New Who? But that years series is already being filmed or will be soon, so I doubt it. She was so underutilised, but so great!

I disagree that Chibnall did the best that he could. I feel like we've seen him do better. I think he just wanted to have Doctor Who to be a certain way, but it didn't fit what he's good at. So, instead of catering to his writing strengths, he ambitiously catered Doctor Who to a style that doesn't fit him at all

With Nyssa/Tegan, I can easily see Tegan having had past husbands/wives, multiple children, and still Nyssa turns back up (after all the Big Finish extended Nyssa stuff) and they get together to enjoy their later years. I could even see Tegan being polyamorus.

I don’t necessarily agree with all of your criticisms, but at least this feels proportionate. You’re not frothing at the mouth, insulting the actors and accusing everyone involved of “KILLING DR WHO” or “insulting its legacy”, as became so common during this era. So many “fans” went overboard and I think we all know why this happened. I think there are still a lot of fans living in denial of how unnecessarily extreme the backlash was.
EDIT: I’ve realised there’s a great example of this in this very comment section…

I was always relieved they didn't reveal more about the Timeless Child, would have undone the mystery it created and something I'd want to see snippets over over the next 50 years.
Chibnall was definitely a mixed bag, which was a shame as I love his era of Torchwood but I did really enjoy series 12 and Flux was fun just didn't stick the landing sadly.

Currently for me, the Whittaker era is frustratingly mediocre. Alot of story beats and plot lines we've seen before this time lacking the passion of previous examples. This mainly the scripts from Chibnall, I get a sense of boredom in his s11/12 episodes, the best ideas come from the guest writers, there's some great stuff like It Takes you Away but it's heavily rushed, which makes the more generic stories more unnecessary like The Tsranga Conundrum. Most of the episodes aren't bad just inspired so alot of minor issues rise to the surface. While Flux was a mess, I do get the sense that Chibnall had more fun thinking outside the box which means that it's still entertaining. I agree 13 is at her best when separate from the rest of the team.

My favourite Whittaker moment is when the doctor starts whining that she would never have gotten arrested for witchcraft as a man despite the third doctor very nearly being burned alive for witchcraft.

I think in general Jodie’s era was fine series 11 was really bad but after watching resolution I was enjoying it again and series 12 I was excited and I did enjoy it tho my mood was sour by the timeless child revaluation but now I have learnt if u just combine it with the “other” revaluation then it’s fine they can be two people and doesn’t ruin anything and I loved flux it’s brilliant my top 5 episodes are
    1. War of the sontarans-great episode where Jodie is very good as the doctor in a historical setting the sontarans are brilliant
    2. The power of the doctor-the plot is out the window but if u don’t focus on that it’s just a fun adventure the only problem for me is dans exit and Jodie lacking screen time but still i love it
    3. Village of the angels-the angels are back and they are brilliant the angels are great in flux and Jodie once again is good in this and I love Dan and yaz dynamic
    4. The haunting of viler diodada (I can t spell sos)-I really like ashad in this story I like it’s small cast and I enjoy it
    5. Resolution-I think this is an underrated one as it shows how one dalek even with out its case it can so much damage and I love it even with its bad casing design but it made sense

i'm still genuinely disappointed that the Jodie/Chibnall era didn't resonate with what feels like the majority of fans. Although it has its problems, its the closest the new series has come to what I always dreamed new Doctor Who being when I was a kid in the late 90s-early 00s. It was really hard going on social media every week after the episode and seeing everyone hating it so much when I was really enjoying it

Recent fans have been such moaners. Over on Digital Spy people would down vote episodes before they were even broadcast. Saying that, Jodie's first season was a car crash. It was really, really bad. I didn't like how she played The Doctor, I didn't like the accent, I didn't like the writing or the stories. I didn't like how they handled the historical stories (throw-away aliens). By the time that Flux came along, things had improved a lot. It was OK, standard Doctor Who.
With Jo Martin, I kept hoping that they would swap Jodie for Jo. "Hello, can we have THIS Doctor instead please?"

For me personally, Jodie's era was the best since the show came back in 2005. I couldn't relate to the show in the same way during the RTD and Moffat eras as I could when watching the classic series. I still enjoyed it, but I wasn't as in love with it. Jodie's era brought me back to being as invested in it as I had been when the ABC reran the classic series from the start (aside from the missing episodes obviously). As you said, there was something more like the classic series about it. Chris Chibnall did a great job. It wasn't perfect, but it just felt more like the kind of Doctor Who that I like. The music was so much better too. I was never a fan of Murray Gold's work on the show so Segun Akinola was a breath of fresh air and he got the balance between the weirdness of the classic series soundtracks and the more cinematic approach modern TV tends to go for.
I initially didn't like The Fugitive Doctor or the episode that introduced her, but for a really unusual reason. Because of the Chameleon Arch being used, it reminded me of Human Nature which is a rare episode that is almost universally beloved but I hated to a point where I nearly gave up on the show entirely. With the character being introduced like that, it put me on the wrong foot to begin with. When she returned a few times though, I started to like the character more. Now, if anything, this story line has actually made me hate Human Nature slightly less because they've used the same gadgetry but in a story that made sense, when there was actually enough peril to justify using it.
I'm really disappointed that RTD and Murray Gold are coming back. It'll make some fans happy, maybe even the majority, but it feels like it's going backwards and to an era I wasn't all that keen on the first time around. It had some great moments, some brilliant episodes, great actors, etc, but like I said earlier that I couldn't connect to it like the classic series. Even worse is that RTD has signed this deal with Disney which means it's all exclusive to Disney+ outside of the UK now. It means a bigger budget, but it'll mean either having to pirate it or to sign up for a streaming service that I don't want. I don't pay for streaming services and I don't want to have to start in order to watch something I used to be able to watch for free. I think it has also effected DVD and BluRay releases which is a big shame.

I agree some cliffhangers are terrible. I'm currently watching season 17 of classic Who and I don't get the love for it. Tom Baker is out of control the stories are mediocre to Meh. Watched City of Death - great villain in the Count but the story is like watching a mix of monty python with a Carry on film. I grew up with Classic Who and prefer it over NuWho but the love for this season I never understood. Just finished Creature and the Pit - oh boy what did I just watch. The good thing even though I'm not a fan of this season it still kept me engaged and didn't wonder off to Google search unlike the majority of NuWho episodes. This season has had some naff cliffhangers so far. If the tone for this season was darker and the comedy was toned right down you would of had some great stories. Horns of the Nimon is an example - the story has some interesting elements and if the Nimon were better visualised and the dialogue was better and tone darker it would be more love for it. Then again the over acting in this story is so funny but it overall effects the story.

You know, I feel that the Chibnall era suffered of an issue that is happening to every movie even in Hollywood: they were too engrossed in the visual side of the show, and ended up sacrifying the story. Because of this sacrifice, today we have a production team fully prepared to deal with the new challenge of the international broadcasting. I think this was a back gear that had to be done. And I don't think Chibnall is a bad writer either. Do you remember Broadchurch?

I thought this run had a bad case of an identity crisis where it wanted to be more like Black Mirrior but that didn't click so they tried to make it more like the 10th/ early 11th eras but it just comes across as a rush job to please the fans and casuals.
I did like Jodie and the cast but I hate that they had to deal with racism and misogyny.

I'm sorry, no. great corporations are not the all powerful beings we wish them to be (so that we could be excused for our failures, maybe?). They rely on us consuming their goods, cause the real money is with us, not with them, and they know that if we stop buying they're in trouble. That's why they really keep their ear to the ground to see where our opinions are going, and they always change accordingly. That's why things are improving in democratic countries and not under dictatorships.

The show has been dumbed down to the point it's not sci-fi it's weak emotional morons who just happen to be in space. How was it even Doctor Who when so much of the history of the show has been replaced? The Doctor isn't even a Timelord and first Doctor wasn't even the first Doctor! It was a total ******* disaster and after the Timeless child nothing matters now that the Doctor is immortal. They killed the show!
