This was a great first episode, Josh, loving the podcast! It's always hilarious to me how strong peoples opinions can be about the way OTHER people collect things!! Also, loving the orange lighting!
I think its less the video tape that makes me grind my teeth, its more the lighting. I think in episodes like pyramids of mars the videotape looks passable because the lighting isn't over the top. But episodes like warriors of the deep and parts of planet of evil makes me grind my gears. The 60s era looks quite great to me because the lighting isnt over the top and it actually looks like their on alien worlds and bases under siege instead of overly lit sets tying to look like the inside of ships.
I like hearing you talk about classic who and stuff in general, you're a very interesting person to listen to. Excited to hear you finished making the first episode of Chimes of Midnight! Your animations are awesome to see and I hope you take as much time as you need to finish. In the meantime I hope to see more episodes of this podcast!!

I've been making a fan film series for a while and when I released episode 1 of season 2 everyone was like "Wow that's great...where's the next one" and I was like guys, it took me ages to finish this one, appreciate what you've got. I have started to view it as appreciation though - that people enjoy thing you've created so much that they want to see more.

Fellow Australian Whovian, here, watching since McCoy was on The Afternoon Show on ABC. I agree with The Five Doctors being an excellent introduction to the series: it moves fast, it has an interesting story, the classic monsters are there. If I want to go to my happy place, I'll follow it with the "30 Years in the Tardis" documentary made in 1993.
The podcast format is giving big Very Delta energy and I am here for more of that kind of energy in fandom content.

I loved this! Just a fun place for conversations to start.
What was good was that after the new series came on I decided to buy an old series DVD to see if my childhood love of the show, from the eighties, was still there. So I bought the first story that had come out on DVD - which was The Five Doctors Special Edition. It was a great choice as it gave me a real kick of nostalgia and made me want to explore more, including all the stuff before I was born. That included the black and white era which soon became my favourite of the classic show!

Great Podcast, love how you share your opinions on things people go nuts about, as well shows were humans, like for me I have to keep everything from the collection boxsets, like for instance the steelbooks, I keep the fancy sticker that's on the packaging, so people might think I'm crazy haha. But we all have our things and as long as it makes us happy, who cares ayy :)

Nice to see you back Josh. I'm liking this new podcast format. Great choice of The 5 Doctors. Despite its flaws it gets a free pass from me because of its celebratory nature. I'm also old enough to remember my excitement when it was first telecast. I'm quite keen to see the Blu-ray version. I've seen a comparison video on UA-cam of the effects in each version and does look like it may be an improvement ( having said that I'm emotionally attached to original Classic Doctor Who special effects. Although I would kill to see someone upgrade the dinosaur effects on Invasion of the Dinosaurs.

are j cards the cards on the outside?, i have the standard season 8 collection blu ray and im sure the outside is already becoming damaged, same with the cards on the animations and the classic boxset carboard holders like for the unit files and such
I've been thinking about the whole J card thing since you first mentioned it. I feel that a lot of Who fans have the mindset of collectors, so they're basically thinking that there are only a finite number of those sets produced, so if yours was ever resold then thats one less complete set in the world. This kind of makes sense back in the old days when the merch was genuinely rare, but now everything is mass produced and meticulously documented online so it just seems a bit silly. That being said...I am keeping all the J cards!

Absolutely love The Five Doctors! ❤ I'll admit I wasn't too impressed with the latest special edition of the story although there were some great shots. I much prefer the 1995 version.
I like Hurndall's First Doctor, but it isn't that much like Hartnell imo. Hartnell had a giddy excitement energy, (probably because he was hiding a fluff) and when he was grumpy he could be super intense. Bradley doesnt have it either.
J cards look ugly af on the shelf too, let’s not lie. I get it.

Totally agree about the videotape. I've just started re-watching the original Star Trek (remastered) and it really struck me how much better it looks than Doctor Who. It's one of the reasons why watching Spearhead from Space is such a bittersweet experience. On the one hand, it's a great story that still looks wonderful because it's entirely shot on film. On the other hand, I spend half the time watching it just thinking about how frustrated i am that the rest of the series can't look like that.
Josh, you're always saying my opinions out loud. Even when you're not, its great hearing your perspective.
We really need a proper reunion between Susan and the Doctor, that always disappointed me in 5 Doctors.

Ok, so the switch of Dr Who to videotape from film is worthy of it's own documentary. As does the BBC's policy of overwriting videotapes to save money. That wiped loads of classic shows.
However I suspect that if Star Trek TOS had lasted into the mid 1970s it would have swapped to video too.
Plus they're having to remaster effects for blu ray releases due to the lower resolution of the SFX. And to save time and money effects for TNG onwards were done on video. Fortunately the live footage is mainly film. At least up until ST: Enterprise.
If Star Trek TOS had lasted into the mid-seventies, it would still have been shot (and edited) on film. It's an hour long prime time drama so they weren't going to switch to shooting on videotape.
In American television of that period, videotape was for cheap programming like game shows, news programs, daily afternoon soap operas, talk shows, and certain situation comedies.
Man From Atlantis was on film. Battlestar Galactica was on film. Buck Rogers was on film. Even the sitcom Quark was shot on film.
@dngillikin The shows you mention were mainly new massive budget shows.
Given the trajectory the Original Series took, if it had continued I doubt it would have had a big prime time budget.
Even for TNG, most of the special effects were on videotape to cut costs. Hence them having to redo them in CGI for the Blu Ray releases.
You have to remember at the time TOS was a comparative failure. We have Lucille Ball to thank for it having more than one season.
It took a decade of reruns for it to be acknowledged as the classic it was and still is.
Ah the J Card thing heard people on about that before ha the disk tray on mine was busted when it arrived i am blaming royal mail for that anyone how to stick it back in properly
The videotape look doesn't really bother me one bit im 34 and i grew up watching alot of shows that were filmed on videotape on repeats and VHS and so forth it never took me out of it i use to watch stuff in that format such as "Fawlty Towers", "Red Dwarf", "Blakes 7", "Blackadder" and "Star Cops" which were all shot on videotape it was common practice with alot of british shows in those days i think young people just don't have enough patience for the video look because there so use to shows with digital or film i much prefer the video look because it feels realistic but that's just me.
I don’t think it’s patience, it’s more the look. I can handle the pace, but hate the look. I grew up with Fawlty Towers, and it was a comedy so it didn’t matter.
Whilst I've had arguments on all social media platforms, Twitter/X seems to be particularly bad. Partly down to everyone being able to see Tweets, not just friends. Plus the character limit restricts context and nuance.

I know you said Whoviana is for women, but can blokes listen too? Where do you stand on pulling the classic DVDs from the boxset collection? I flattened all my classic range box sets so I could see all the dvds side by side? I kept them incase I one day decide to glue them back together. That is sad now I mentioned it.

Okay, I know this is partly for jokes, and I didn't know about all this drama, but for me personally, I know that I just cringe at the idea of throwing stuff out in general, because you never know when you might need it again. And if you really are that confident that you will never touch them again, why throw them out when you can just give them away? You don't even have to sell it. You could literally just give them to somebody. Next time you throwing out a Doctor Who thing, give me a message and I'll take it instead :)
Indeed. I could do with a replacement J-card for my Season 22 set (it got damaged when I was packing for it a holiday trip once), and I’d have gladly taken one from someone else who (admittedly inexplicably) doesn’t want their own!

Is anyone tech savy enough to tell me how something being filmed on film can be made to look so good and turned into “true” HD? I’ve always known that video tape can only be slightly cleaned up and upscaled but what’s the process behind film? Just cause I always mention this to my friends and the second they asked why that is, I sit there like a good old plum.
It’s hard to explain, since it’s so different to digital. 16mm film is equivalent of 720/1080p. 35mm is 1080/4K. So it’s original quality IS HD, just it wasn’t always processed that way. When it get transferred to video, it loses that quality.
Videotape will ALWAYS be SD, since that’s it’s original quality.
Hope that makes sense, it’s way more complicated than that

Another fab video, as a former collector of too many things, I now limit myself to major changes. So the collection with the new 5 Docs, is very tempting. I agree on the point with people always wanting more too quickly. Folk need to learn to live in the moment, we already have so much, and not enough time for it all. We’re in a good place at the moment, so enjoy the ride.
I adore the the three doctors, but honestly. I think the five doctors is overrated.
I think it’s nothing more than overbloated fanservice and is too messy and unfocused. The only highlight is Troughton and the Brigadier and Pertwee and Sarah Jane being reunited. There is just one scene with a dalek, one scene with Jamie and Zoe, and Tom Bakers addition is pointless as he does nothing, and there is hardly any interaction between the multiple doctors. Hardly a good final script for Terrance Dicks either.
Now the three doctors, THAT is a story I can watch over and over and enjoy it every time. Tons of interaction between the doctors and a funny, exciting script.

Love your videos Josh, but have to disagree about recommending The Five Doctors as a jumping on point for those new to the classic era.
There's so many nods and references to previous stories, a lot of faces too that they might not know, talk about chucking them in the deep end!
How about getting familiar with the characters first, by watching at least three stories of each of the five Doctors?
The Five Doctors is a chocolate box full of delights indeed, but definitely not a starter.

I throw the cards away too. Same with the sleeves on the animation blurays too.
I don’t. They’re an integral part of the packaging on them. I even store the larger boxes from the DVD boxsets even though I do so separately from the actual DVDs themselves (though that’s mostly because I can hardly store the DVDs in order if they’re also stuck being together with the rest of those sets!).
I had never heard the term “J card” before, but I assume it’s what I call a slip cover? I almost always throw these out as well. In the US at least, these slip covers almost always have the same cover art as the disc case, and usually have an ugly hole where the barcode on the case is, so I just chuck it.
The J-card is the packaging on the proper versions of the Collection sets (the bit that has the full rear cover with VAM and story details and curves under and partway up the front [hence J] with the season number on it.
Regarding Susan not talking to the Fifth Doctor, there's a shot after the Doctor tells Turlough and Tegan to go prepare some food where they look at each other and it cuts away as they look like they're about to talk. Can't help but think there are things said that aren't shown to us..I doubt the 80s version of the program was equipped to handle it so it's left to our imaginations.

but yeah WHAT is up with those disc trays?? real shame whenever the doctor's face has 4 beautiful circle rips in it because the tray decided to go on holiday around the rest of the box

Apparently the Fifth Doctor and Susan didn't have any conversation because John Nathan Turner never liked to have feelings shown between Doctors and companions. He thought it might be seen as inappropriate. Sometimes he was weird like that...
NA boxsets don't even come with a J Card, I had to look up what it even was lol. No judgement here!
