As for your comments on Demons of the Punjab, I'll give you a little insight into British history education. Nothing is said about the Empire. The entire era. Nothing is said about the British role in The Troubles. Basically we aren't taught anything that would put us in a "bad light". My education consisted of cherrypicked Kings, Queens (Henry VIII, Victoria etc), the War of the Roses and the Civil War (although Cromwell's actions after the war are, again, not detailed) and then we jump to WW2. Which is covered in detail.

10- Praxeus (It's a grower and the body horror still gives me the creeps)
9- Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror (Warm fuzzy episode that just makes me smile when 13 talks to Tesla)
8- Eve of the Daleks (It was more laid back and easy to follow after Flux)
7-Power of the Doctor (Despite the many threads left hanging this era left behind, it delivers as a sendoff to an era)
6- Rosa (Despite the problems of what this episode tried to convey and show, I shed tears at Rosa's bus protest)
5- Can You Hear Me? (Controversial with it, but for me it delivers heart and a message I understand as an abstract-thinking person)
4- Resolution (I haven't seen a Dalek this threatening on its own than the episode Dalek)
3- War of the Sontarans (The strongest of the Flux series in my eyes with the Sontarans being more of a threat than ever before to me)
2- Demons of the Punjab (Shed more tears than Rosa and the wedding and death is heartwarming and breaking)
1- It Takes You Away (The abstract weirdness and message despite what others say to the side characters still stick with me and the era as a whole.)

I loved Thirteen's era, she was my Doctor. I got into Doctor Who when I was about 11 and I was 12 when her first episode aired, so I feel like I grew up with Thirteen. My favourite episodes are Eve of the Daleks and Power of the Doctor. Eve of the Daleks basically embodied the reason I connected so strongly with Thirteen and Yaz as a queer teenager and Power of the Doctor was just a really fun ride with an ending that is one of the very few things that makes me cry uncontrollably.

    4. Village of the Angels
    5. Fugitive of the Judoon

On "Can You Hear Me?", I remember after this episode aired, Mandip Gill said that series 13 would delve more into Yaz's mental health. I'm really disappointed we didn't get a follow up because Flux had to replace the original plans for series 13.

I'm not sure I could make a top 10 list, but Power of the Doctor was my favorite of the era as well. I loved each of the episodes you put in your top ten, and was surprised and happy that The Ghost Monument made it into the list. The Doctor finding and reconnecting with her TARDIS at the end always makes me tear up. It might be one of my favorite scenes in the era.

    • @hotdog1214
      @hotdog1214 11 місяців тому

I don't know why Ghost Monument was so badly received at the time, I thought it was pretty decent for a second episode (although not without it faults as with most stories) and the pacing as mentioned in the list, always moving forward, a small group of people who barely know one another striving for a goal, put me in mind of classic Who stories. And the ending always gets me, the Doctor running up that hill to the big blue box and then having a one on one chat was divine - heartachingly joyous. 😢❤

Thank you for the video, Vera!
It is not exclusive to this era, but most of the good episodes in the Chris Chibnall's era are standalone ones. The contained aspect of single episode storylines allows to introduce and explore certain ideas once and be done with them by the end. And, despite its problems in execution, this era had also a lot good and new concepts!

    10. Village of the Angels: great supporting cast, an effective creepy atmosphere, great use of the Angels, would probably rank higher if it wasn't being clumsily worked into the overarching Flux narrative.
    9. The Woman Who Fell to Earth: an overall solid introduction to the era, setting up the characters fairly well and establishing the overall feel effectively.
    8. Resolution: an awkward tonal mishmash in places, but overall a really fun action romp, and easily the most well-made of the NYD Dalek trilogy.
    7. The Witchfinders: a creepy foreboding atmosphere and Alan Cumming hamming it up makes this loads of fun, despite its wonky ending.
    6. Rosa: overall a fairly effective and well-constructed story, despite some pretty egregious problems that prevent it being at the top of this era.
    5. War of the Sontarans: the Sontarans are well utilised, it's got the best Thirteen characterisation, and it manages to be really fun along the way.
    4. Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror: another really fun romp, with great characterisation for the Doctor, a great supporting cast and an entertainingly silly tone.
    3. It Takes You Away: weird and creepy, yet also lyrical and beautiful, this is a magnificent episode and a far more effective finale for series 11 than the one we actually got.
    2. Demons of the Punjab: it's the improved version of Rosa, making up for its heroes being redundant by telling an impactful and moving tale about love and intolerance, bolstered by Segun Akinola's best score.
    1. The Haunting of Villa Diodati: it goes a bit far into Great Man Theory territory at the end, but this is an overall entertaining horror-comedy romp with a great guest cast, strong work from the leads, a well-written script and a nifty execution.

I guess almost no one agrees with me about this but While I've enjoyed lots of moments and ideas from Jodi's era, some of my favorite bits and aspects of this series were in the Flux Arc. I found it full of interesting ideas and energy, drama and humor, and many moments of deep feeling between characters, as well as some really creepy villains. There I've said it. I know, I didn't actually pick favorite episodes.

Ghost Monument’s an interesting pick. I enjoy it, but I actually prefer The Woman Who Fell to Earth personally.
I *love* Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror. Just a great fun historical standalone.
The New Year’s Dalek specials are honestly a trio I need to revisit. I remember enjoying all three but beyond that I don’t have the strongest opinions formed.
Fugitive of the Judoon is a great premise that I feel would’ve been better in execution if it were just a two-gander between Whittaker and Martin with no companions.
Demons of the Punjab is a straight up masterpiece, probably my favorite of the whole era.
Love It Takes You Away, gotta revisit it. Ditto Can You Hear Me? I share your read on the Graham scene at the end.
Love The Power of the Doctor. Far from flawless, but it’s a fun ride and I adore it thematically.

Outside of that, most Historicals are good - Rosa, Demons of the Punjab, Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror, Haunting of Villa Diodati.
I also I liked how Woman Who Fell to Earth, It Takes You Away, and Resolution come together to deal with family.
The Return of Jack Harkness in Fugitive of the Judoon & Revolution of the Daleks...and the Power of the Doctor encourage one to bear with the Ascension of the Cybermen & the Timeless Child.

I've only watched Jodie's era once, so I'm scouring Wikipedia to refresh my memory.
Turns out I don't have 10 (I had totally checked out by Flux) and I can't definitively rank them. So here's... something? Turns out my only criteria is whether or not the amazing Sacha Dhawan is in an episode.
    Here goes nothing:
The Power of the Doctor (indulgent fan-service and Sacha Dhawan)
Resolution (very creepy; had the potential to be great)
Eve of the Daleks (mostly fun bottle episode)
Fugitive of the Judoon (enjoyed Jo Martin's reveal)
    Spyfall, Parts 1 & 2 (Sacha Dhawan)
The Haunting of the Villa Diodati (it had things and stuff; literature and Cybermen? It was fine)
Ascension of the Cybermen (almost great episode, helped by Dhawan)
The Timeless Children (Dhawan and ONLY Dhawan, lol)
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Arachnids in the UK
    It Takes You Away
    Fugitive of the Judoon
    Demons of the Punjab
    Resolution
    Praxeus

    The Timeless Children
I also love the weird scarf/paper monster creation from The Ghost Monument, and Ryan remembering his chemistry to defeat it. Agree with you that Demons of the Punjab really characterized ordinary historical people really well, making them so relatable. The guest actors from Resolution were SOOOO good. The woman in particular did an AMAZING job. I wish the two of them joined the doctor but alas.
I have to agree on Jodie's parting words. Those stuck with me.

I'm on number 7, Fugitive. I'm not sure if I just have good memories of this episode because of the shock twist which literally made me leap out of my seat at the time as I haven't rewatched in a while. I like to think that a big part of its appeal is indeed Jo Martin, she has a terrific yet somehow at ease presence as the Doctor. The misdirect with the Judoon being after her partner was also an amazing story telling method, even the trailer gave no hint, it was just going to be 'oh look the Judoon are back, cool' but forked off into a completely different direction (a similar trick that would be used in Spyfall later on). More than that there is another element. Its a multi Doctor story we weren't prepared for, and in reverse! Usually multi Doctor stories are the current one teaming up with some of our past favourites, revisiting old friends. But this time (while she is technically still from the past) its the first time we've met her, similar to the way the Doctor does in a normal multi Doctor episode. Criticise Chibnall as we might, the structure of this one was well done, so credit where credit is due.

I'm glad to see someone else appreciate the ending of Can You Hear Me?. I don't like how people villainise the Doctor for not knowing what to say, because as someone who doesn't know how to react at times like this, I've always felt bad but I know I can't help it. So I'm glad that Chibnall is telling the audience that it's ok to not know what to say, it's not cruel, it's not disrespectful. And the fact that Chibnall wrote that scene based of how people in his life reacted to when he had cancer makes it all the more special, and makes the people who called him disrespectful for writing this even more frustrating.

    • @hotdog1214
      @hotdog1214 11 місяців тому +1

It seems to be be constantly brought up in the fandom whenever the episode is discussed and always taken in a negative way. I agree with what you have said; I didn't realise it was personal to Chibnall in that way, that makes it even more poignant. At the time I actually found the scene an incredibly refreshing approach to that scenario. Too often in dramas the other characters DO know what to say or have some rousing speech, which might have a temporary feel good factor but isn't realistic. As someone who is socially awkward ala Thirteen I completely get it, someone drops something monumental and you want to be supportive but don't know how to express it, then churn it over in your head for days after, kicking yourself for not saying the 'right' thing. I liked that it was presented differently from the norm, it felt honest.

      @intergalactic92 8 місяців тому

@@hotdog1214it’s one of the "gotcha's" that gets brought up by people who have a concerted interest in vilifying 13 and her run in general. It’s similar to how certain parts of the Star Trek fandom constantly vilify Janeway for how the Tuvix episode ends. There is a concerted effort to make the character look bad.

    • @hotdog1214
      @hotdog1214 8 місяців тому

@@intergalactic92 Oh goodness yes the Tuvix conundrum, you're right that does get brought up a lot to suggest that Janeway was somehow morally corrupt or something. I loved that episode because it asked a difficult question and there was no real right or wrong answer but more of a way to ask bigger questions of people. Do you save one person, or sacrifice that person to save another two?
Although it was a classic Trek reset button by the end so we'd have the characters return next week (and no one ever spoke of it again 😜), the similarity to this Who episode is that it didn't have a feel good magical happy solution such as having found a technobabble way to save Tuvok, Neelix AND Tuvix. I know they're both fantasy shows but that kind of grounded portrayal of fallibility, discomfort and unease is often more interesting to explore than a fairy-tale ending, at least for me anyway.
Thirteen's response to Graham felt very 'real' to me, uncomfortably awkward but the opposite of a saccharin reply. Maybe my own personal bias came in to play as to why I thought it was an intriguing angle to play and others who may not feel that way themselves didn't get what Chibnall was going for, which I suppose is fair enough, but yes there are some who just see it superficially and use it as 'proof' that this Doctor is rubbish, which is a shame. I'll admit I've done my fair share of criticising and critiquing Chibnall's writing but one thing he pretty much stayed on track with (deliberate or not) was the emotional detachment of The Doctor. Its touching that he wrote this from his own experience, it particularly resonates with the phrase "write what you know" .

I do enjoy Haunting a lot as an episode, as well as enjoying the energy enough of Flux and the limitations it was made under help offset my immense list of issues I have with the actual narrative, but in terms of favourites my list isn't too far off, if with a bit of reordering. For me:
    10. Praxeus: The alien reveal is underwhelming however overall it's good.
    9. Can you Hear Me: It's got too much going on, but what it's exploring is great.
    7. Eve of the Daleks: Simple but entertaining.
    6. Rosa: could've been better but a decent execution of a great story idea.
    5. Haunting of the Villa Diodati: Got it's issues however I still love it for the most part.
    4. Nikola Tesla's night of Terror: The highlight of s12.
    3. Demon's of the Punjab: Would've made a better Pure Historical, but it's still great.
    2. War of The Sontarans: Chibnall's strongest script IMO
    1. It Takes you Away: This eras most creative and emotional story.

As a a student in the UK, I can tell you that it was quite a large topic during my history course back in secondary school. It mostly covered British colonial presence in India and some of the horrific things that happened there - I particularly remember covering the Amritsar Day Massacre, the Bengal famine and the Indian Independence Movement. I think a lot of modern history curriculums in the UK have a revisionist focus, looking at the bloodier aspects of Britain's past - a less patriotic perspective. My school in particular looked quite closely at Britain's presence in Africa (particularly the Gold Coast and the Boer War), Australia + New Zealand, the Slave Trade, the East India Company, the Windrush generation etc.
That being said, curriculums vary across the UK so not everyone will have covered the same topics my school did - some of my family members have told me their curriculums were more focused on the historical periods within Britain, like the Tudors, Industrial Revolution and the World Wars. My history course was also very jam-packed so there are certainly areas that were brushed over or not covered that closely. Demons of the Punjab focuses a lot more on the Pakistani perspective, and the tensions between the Hindu and Muslim populations of the two nations - whereas my History course was predominantly focused on the conflicts between the British and the Indian people.
    As for my rankings:
    10) Rosa
    9) War of the Sontarans
    8) Praxeus

I think my 13th Dr ranking would probably go something like this:
Honourable mention - Orphan 55 - Yes, really. But I love it regardless for The Room-esque So Bad it's Good level of crappiness
    10. Praxeus - Characters weren't up to much, but I do like how it handled a real world problem and integrated it into the plot (cough Orphan 55 cough)
    9. Eve of the Daleks - Pure dumb fun
    8. Revolution of the Daleks - Over stuffed, nothing I haven't seen (or heard) before but still pretty good
    7. Power of the Doctor - The Master's Plan was silly, and it felt less of a farewell to Jodie than the it was the whole show, but I'm a sucker for nostalgia bait
    6. War of the Sontarans - Simply fun
    5. Resolution - Made the Daleks threatening again
    4. Rosa - Just Brilliant
    3. It Takes You Away - Complete mindbomb of a story, but I loved it all the same
    2. Can You Hear Me? - Controversial, but I related entirely to that scene at the end with Graham and 13, and I LOVED Zellin and their weird finger thing
    1. Demons of the Punjab - Not exactly a fun episode, but it made me cry. Beautifully written and acted story.
GAHH I forgot to put Village of the Angels in! Well, that's a honourable mention that one with Orphan 55. I just wished that one of all of them was a standalone thing without the Flux killing the pacing of the episode

i Firmly believe that the best of 13's episodes was village of the angels. its uses the angels weird powers in novel and clever ways whilst also having some excelent creepy scenes. the moment when the burning angel coming out of the drawing as the paper catches fire blew my mind. its a shame that flux was so bad when it had such a great episode.

There are really only three episodes from this era that I will bring forward with me and choose to rewatch: Demons of the Punjab, Eve of the Daleks, and Power of the Doctor. They are gems in a pile of largely unremarkable rocks.
However… I do think I need to rewatch Can You Hear Me? The first time I watched it, it made me so irrationally angry for reasons I can’t even explain.
The only explanation is that I was at the lowest point in my entire life emotionally and I expect subconsciously I felt rather called out. Add to that the multiple episodes immediately prior that only escalated my spiraling climate anxiety… let’s just say series 12 wasn’t a good time for my mental health.
The conversation with Graham however has the be my favorite Doctor moment of Jodie’s era. It felt so alien, so neurodivergent, and so something I would do while trying my best to be a supportive friend.

This is my list! I'm still a bit meh and the bottom 5 despite them being in my top 10 (the Chibnall era was a bit meh in general lets be honest), but I think the top 5 are genuinely great Doctor Who episodes.
    10. Kerblam - A compelling mystery story, albeit with problematic messaging.
    9. Fugitive of the Judoon - A fairly fun rump with Jo Martin being the clear stand out performance.
    8. Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror - Thankfully took the time to humanise the title character. Shame about the recycled villains.
    7. Can You Hear Me? - Very much rushed, but the dissection of mental health and depression was well handled.
    6. The Woman Who Fell to Earth - A great story to introduce the new Doctor, and what happened with Grace was heart breaking.
    5. Rosa - Another example of a properly humanised historical figure, and with an actually interesting villain this time.
    4. Eve of the Daleks - Mostly this high because I loved the time loop plotline so much.
    3. Spyfall - Sasha Dewan. That is all.
    2. Village of the Angels - Terrifying, Mysterious, Unnerving, Creepy. Easily the best the Weeping Angels have been used since Blink.
    1. It Takes You Away - One of the most wonderfully weird and imaginative stories I've ever experienced.

Okay, let's see if I can respond to these in the order they're brought up and maybe finish with my own ranking, though that might be difficult.
10: Ghost Monument was fine, I can definitely agree with the general feeling of "this gets the energy of a Doctor Who episode a bit more than the premiere". Not sure it'd make my Top 10, but I'll have to review the episode list (I'll do that later, so I might make this comment a few more times)
9: I always found the Tesla episode a little disappointing, partly because I saw it after others heaped praise upon it. It was fine, the performances were good (I am always a bit sad to see anyone other than David Bowie portraying Tesla, even if this version may have been more accurate), the horror elements were alright but I always had a nagging feeling that the enemy creatures were just a big ripoff of...I think the Spider Queen from Runaway Bride.
8: Revolution of the Daleks had fun moments (the prison escape, for instance) marred by some messy storytelling. I'll be honest: I started writing this response about halfway through the video, so I've already written further down about my dislike of Chibnall era Daleks, but I think this was a stronger step toward a version I could appreciate. Chris Noth's not-DJT was always the opposite of a selling point for me but I think he was less of a deterrent in this episode while Captain Jack had some nice moments with the companions. Yeah, I think this might make it into my Top 10, but probably similarly low.
7: "But it does in many ways feel like a part 1" is the main reason I can't rank Fugitive of the Judoon very high (although, given the scale I might need to use for this era, maybe it might crack the Top 10) - were this a 2-parter with part 1 stopping with the revelation of the Fugitive Doctor's identity and then going somewhere in part 2, then the 2-parter might've earned a much higher spot but instead it just feels like an episode of setup without a third act (or even a proper ending to the second).
6: Was never much of a fan of this era's Dalek episodes and I'm not sure any bothered me more than Resolution. I think it stems from the core concept: the enemy feels like such a different creature from a Dalek that you might as well called it a "Squiddy Boy" and little would've changed except for the impact it has on viewers and the Doctor going "oh no, Daleks are dangerous". In fact, I think I would've preferred it to be something other than a Dalek, then it'd be going into it without all the baggage that comes from that name/race. I do concede that making a single Dalek dangerous is a commendable move, they certainly suffer from what I believe is nicknamed the "Ninja Effect" - the writing trope that you put more dangerous enemies together and suddenly they all become far less capable.
5: I liked Demons of the Punjab, few notes here. Probably could've been tuned up a bit, but I didn't find major grievous issues.
4: It Takes You Away may be the first of this era that I really liked. Demons of the Punjab was good, Ghost Monument was fine, Kerblam was alright, but I really liked this one. Showed creativity, interesting ideas, and was sadly followed up by possibly the worst episode of that first series.
3: Eve of the Daleks is definitely my favourite of the Dalek episodes. A good time loop story, somewhat entertaining characters, some nice moments for the companions (it does feel like Yaz & Dan are friends and not just two people travelling with the Doctor). I'm not a big fan of the ship, but it doesn't bother me much in this.
2: Can You Hear Me is an episode that doesn't work for me at least partly because I've seen Farscape - it feels too much like an attempt to do a Mallus episode, but that show already did it better so this comes off as a pale imitation. I'm mixed on that scene of Graham & The Doctor (partly because I'm not sure if I can accept your read, which would make it a better scene), so that doesn't help either.
1: I think I said this in response to the Take Two review of the Power of the Doctor, but it didn't work as well for me because I don't have that attachment/affection for the Classic Era, so the returning companions do little for me and the moments with the Doctors are a little hollow while I continue to dislike this Master. The writing's quite messy otherwise, lots of nonsensical moments or decisions - basically, if nostalgia bait doesn't hook you and the Master isn't a big sell for you, this episode is not that good.
Okay, needed to take a break before I could finish my promised post, so here is that list (after some very mild consideration, mainly looking at the titles of every episode and trying to remember what I actually liked, having not rewatched any in some time, if at all):
    1. It Takes You Away
    2. Eve of the Daleks
    3. Demons of the Punjab
    4. Praxeus
    5. Village of the Angels
    6. The Woman Who Fell to Earth
    7. Fugitive of the Judoon
    8. Kerblam!
    9. The Ghost Monument
    10. Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror
I may be more surprised than anyone that's the order it ended up in, and I'm not 100%, but I'm not sure what I'd swap in or not (Spyfall maybe, but it had a lot of issues, particularly in Part 2, and I almost like the Rise of the Cybermen one)

  • @CroneoRegion

idk what'd be top 10 but here's the ones I love in order of broadcast:
    Rosa
    Demons of the Punjab
    It Takes You Away
    Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror
    Praxeus
    Can You Hear Me?
    The Haunting of Villa Diodati
    Eve of the Daleks
    The Power of the Doctor
That's 9 of them, and I'm counting Flux as one story here (because it is) so that's 9 I have some level of fondness for. That's not to say I don't like any of the others, I do, but these are the only ones I LOVE. That said, it's an 8-9/10 love not a 10/10 love. Idk if I'd give any of these a 10, but I'm likely gonna rewatch these in a couple of months.

Honestly looking back at the whole, there were plenty of episodes I like during Jodie's run (others like were can you hear me, villa episode and Witchfinders )what let it down were the finales tbh and the 2022 specials (obviously not including the power of the doctor), as they were not great tbh.
The companions as a whole were great, but honestly, Ryan wasn't great tbh, the acting wasn't great (felt no emotion in this voice at times) but I do love the other 3 companions. I think those things and the lack of marketing, let down this era tbh.
Honestly, I agree with your choices apart from Eve of the Daleks. I don't like the episode tbh, like the plot, but the side characters are not great.
