Hey everyone, I've decided this is the last episode of Whoviana. It's clear it's not what people want, they want my more generic UA-cam videos.
I've recorded a Jodie Whittaker Retrospective, but gonna leave that as private and not release it.
Thanks for the support for those who were into it! :)

I respect your decision, but wanted to share that I personally find it a shame. I hadn’t checked out The Five Doctors one because I still haven’t seen that story. I was looking forward to your uniquely comedic chaos vibe takes on stories that I had seen. Take care and all the best!

This is a shame, I thought you'd be great as a podcast host ever since you were on Review of Death and really enjoyed the two episodes you had posted so far. A weekly podcast seems like a big commintment so I imagine it was disappointing not to get the response you wanted. Hope to see more fun projects like this in the future, and hope you are doing great

I find it funny when people say they fell off with Capaldi like those characteristics weren’t very present in the previous modern Doctors. In particular 9. I do think sadly a large part of it was that 12 wasn’t young and quirky. Makes You think how much people actually payed attention to the show they were watching.

Capaldi was very rough at first and took a season or two to find his feet. Once he got on form, it was like having Tom Baker back (just go watch the War speech), but it was a long and bumpy road to get there. Moffat's too--clever-for-their-own-good plots didn't help.

I love that Capaldi's Doctor was the first to get a multi-Master story, and the only Doctor whose first *and* last episodes feature another Doctor, even if Matt Smith in Deep Breath is literally Moffat begging fans of the quirky young exuberant Doctor to not give up on the old grump. And I love that Moffat gave Capaldi the gift of a Mondasian Cyberman story, and a damned good one at that.

I tried for years to get into Who because people told me I’d love it. I tried several times with Eccleston and his first episode. It took so many tries until I could finish the episode because it just wasn’t appealing for some reason.
It wasn’t until 2016 when someone posted Capaldi’s speech from the Zygon two-parter. His delivery blew me away. And then also, Jenna Coleman was in the scene twice as Clara and as the Zygon pretending to be her and I was taken aback by her beauty. So I thought I’d look her up to see where she started in the show, which led me to Matt Smith and the Asylum episode. He’ll in love with her and also Smith. Suddenly I thought, “I might like this show.”
I then thought, let em try an episode of this Tennant guy… blew me away. “OMG, am I fan?”
I went back to Eccleston and… nope, still couldn’t do it. So I went straight through, from Tennant to Capaldi, during all of 2016, and was caught up so I could start watching along with his new season. I had done it. Finally become a fan. I never had to live through the years of no Who because I was playing catch up.
After that new season was done, I did go back, and with a greater appreciation for the show, I was finally able to get through Eccleston and enjoy it. Now I’m working my way through the Collection BluRays, have bought way too much Who merchandise, and am a fully committed Whovian.

I love media with strong character development, so I love the Capaldi era. It has all my favorites: my fav Doctor, my fav companions, my fav Master, my fav TARDIS, my fav episode, my fav seasons. I love the stuff in Series 8 and 9 where the emphasis is on the Doctor and Clara's toxic love towards each other.
The same way Josh felt about Capaldi being announced is how I feel about the possibility of T'Nia Miller as the Doctor. I saw her in Haunting of Bly House and Fall of the House of Usher, and she's absolutely brilliant. She could pull off the dark side of the Doctor, but also the vulnerable side so well. If Nyssa pointed a gun at me and told me to cast the 16th(?) Doctor, I would choose her.

I disagree with your idea of series nine showing a more wacky Doctor because of a BBC intervention. I think that it was a Moffat take on what the Sixth Doctor was supposed to be, an abrasive character that mellows and improve with time, giving us a great voyage into the Doctor's inner thoughts and feelings. If this is not Doctor Who enough, I don't know what it is.

I like the theory that his goofiness in series 9 was him over doing in on the "I am an idiot" thing. The lesson being that he does travels for fun, helping out when trouble finds him. He forgot that in series 8 and this was him over correcting and learned to tone it down at the end of the series, leading him to the perfectly balanced Twelve we get in 10. Believing this doesn't help me enjoy watching it, but at least I feel like I get how it fits the narrative.

I LOVE Whoviana it's totally up there with Batmanmarch ... Review of Death and the 50% Doctor Who guys. I hope you reconsider...give it a few more shows. At least up to the 60th Specials Totally agree with your views on Peter Capaldi. Great Doctor , maybe let down by some not so great scripts. As someone who has watched Doctor Who (at the age of 6) since 1963 I loved his portrayal of a classic Doctor with a modern edge. Not to mention he had one of the best TARDIS interiors. I look forward to what you present next but maybe sleep on your decision to shelve Whoviana.

I took an animation course in College "for fun" while getting my degree in TV/Radio Production. I think it was the 2nd hardest class I took. My history & honors minors were a walk in the park, and folks thought I was fucking Galileo for finishing it - but that animation course - I still have nightmares from trying to book time in studio to finish hand drawn animations and learn Maya within a week, oh, and my horrid flash animations - they look more like a power point than anything.
TLDR: Animation is actually Hell on Earth, and anyone crazy enough to work on it deserves all the money.

It's interesting to hear your thoughts on AI. My take is this: It will become (Some could argue it already has in some areas) a powerful tool, but nothing more. A smartphone is also a powerful tool.
The ultimate endgame for me (As a non-talented/non-creative person but would love to create things) is to be able to direct AI as you talk about and use it to generate art/content that I otherwise wouldn't be able to fulfil alone. I don't think it should be looked as stealing/removing jobs, but more as an opportunity as a powerful tool for aid.

I joined Doctor Who with the 50th anniversary special, so Capaldi was essentially my Doctor growing up, so I’ve got a lot of fondness and nostalgia for his era. Though looking back, series 8 was a bit challenging for 10 year old me. Having the main hero of the show being a bit of a cold hearted and cantankerous ass makes him a little hard to get attached to, though everything clicked for me once we got to Mummy on the Orient Express.
That’s probably why it’s so high on the DWM poll, it was the first time you felt like you could actually trust this incarnation. And then his “man that stops the monsters” speech in the following episode just sealed the deal.

I get what you mean about Capaldi's Doctor making a bit of an about-turn towards wackiness in Series 9, but I think it's in ways that are still very much in keeping with Capaldi as an individual and performer? Like, Capaldi himself plays electric guitar and was in a band, so it makes sense to introduce that into the show, and he probably did say he wanted to bring elements of that into the show.
The Sonic sunglasses to my knowledge were because Capaldi had observed that this would mean that poorer fans whose parents couldn't afford a sonic screwdriver toy for the kid's birthday or Christmas but probably did have a pair of shades could still pretend to be The Doctor. It's a smart move and a kind one, as much as some of us might have found it a bit goofy.

    • @henrymendoza8295
      @henrymendoza8295 8 місяців тому

I've got mixed feelings on The Doctor Falls vs. Twice Upon A Time as a finale. I think I do think of The Doctor Falls as his actual final story and Twice Upon A Time as a Coda. I'm very glad Twice Upon A Time exists, and I happen to quite like his last speech, but I also feel like if it had ended on The Doctor Falls, then I wouldn't have been going 'I wish he had another episode' (or at least, no more so than I was already). I also don't think it would have been what I instinctively reached for as an idea for his final story. So it's a weird feeling.
I don't feel like Bradley's version of The First Doctor is super faithful to Hartnell's, it definitely feels more like his own interpretation, but then if we wanted a copy then they should have just cast John Guilor or something.

For me, Troughton is the greatest Doctor of them all. Followed closely by Hartnell, Pertwee, McCoy and Capaldi. I really loved Capaldi's Doctor. I loved him when he was silly and I loved him when he was serious. I loved Series 9, but the ones I remember are the Zygon war and Heaven Sent / Hell Bent. The Robot of Sherwood, Face the Raven, Extremis, World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls... These are terrific stories and terrific performances. (I think I liked Twice Upon a Time and Doctor Mysterio more than you did. I hatd Kill the Moon, not because of the spiders but because it was OTT silly.) In any run of stories, for any regeneration of the Doctor, there will be weaker stories or flubs or filler, things attempted but not quite pulled off. Still, I could watch Capaldi as the doctor all day long. I hear he's not keen to reappear on the show, but I hope that softens. Even Tom Baker eventually made a comeback, so I have hope we may not yet have seen the 12th's last appearance.

With k9 adventures, Sarah Jane adventures, class, doctor who, and Torchwood we had a really strong portfolio of shows for all age groups. Class is the only one that didn't end up as just more doctor who

I just finished the Capaldi era for the first time since broadcast, and I totally agree with you. Last Christmas is awesome but should have been Clara's exit. BUT I don't think Heaven Sent slaps as hard with a newer companion.
Also agree that Series 10 has the best overall vibes of the Capaldi years, but most of the stories aren't all that. WEAT does a lot of heavy lifting in that series.
Sad you're not doing any more of these, I would have loved to hear your Jodie thoughts.

People calling the animations "cartoons" has always bothered me and it's so vindicating to hear someone else come to the same conclusion that it's often used as belittlement. I've had my issues with some of the animations, I'm not crazy about how Hartnell looks in Galaxy 4 and think Frazer Hines' likeness was hit and miss for a while, but I'm so glad they exist and I find myself enjoying even the ones I'm less keen on visually. The "AnneMarie Walsh team" has consistently had a really appealing style and I hope they get around to some of my Hartnell favourites like The Myth Makers.
I've historically been less keen on the Big Finish Creative style (if that's right!) but after feeling initially disheartened I really enjoyed how The Abominable Snowmen looked, that was one of the big ones to get right for me as it's my favourite missing Troughton. I have a few pet peeves like Padmasambhava's design, the Yeti spheres sticking out a bit too much and the hay bed in Troughton's cell seeming to flicker but overall I got the sense they've come a long way, I'm hoping that if they're tackling The Smugglers it'll similarly show growth.
I didn't get to see the Underwater Menace animation at the BFI but I heard that it supposedly had 15 months of production which is such good news, Evil of the Daleks very much benefitted from the extra production time so it really bodes well, I have it pre-ordered but I'm trying to save it for Christmas so hopefully the wait is worth it, I'm sure it will be.
As for Capaldi, Series 9 and 2016 were absolutely my low point as a fan. I didn't like Dark Water/Death in Heaven, being a 13 year old when it went out I thought Santa showing up was way too kiddish and it made me feel I was starting to grow out of the show? So series 9 had to win me back, and I absolutely hated it, I still haven't rewatched any of it other than the two part finale. The Return of the Doctor Mysterio felt outright embarassing to watch, so waiting a full year for that left me feeling burnt, to the point where I'm almost surprised looking back I stuck around for Series 10. It was absolutely worth it in the end though, I adored it and it got me back on side, felt like everything I was missing, Bill is probably still my favourite revival companion, the Simm reveal and mondasian Cybermen were a lovely surprise, Missy's arc was brilliant after I had previously found the character a little annoying, and while I've since gained an appreciation for Series 8 I feel Capaldi's Doctor was just right in that final series and I was so heartbroken to learn it would be his last.
2016 wasn't all bad though, I'm fairly sure it's around then - if not then 2017 prior to Series 10's airing - that I watched Remembrance of the Daleks and The Five Doctors for the first time. It would be another couple years before the classic series took over completely for me, but that's when it got its hooks in deep.

Completely agree. "No stars... I hoped there be stars" is perfect final line. And then they go with that 20 minute monologue about pears and children hearing the Doctor's name and even though I absolutely love Capaldi I was all like "Just flippin' regenerate already". But I feel it's typical Moffat regeneration. He writes good end, good line, but then he continues to type. Eight Doctor holding the regeneration cup had perfect "Will it hurt?" "Yes" "Good.". Perfect. But then he namecheck all Big Finish people, salute them and says 'Physicial heal thyself', which sounds really forced and rehearsed. And in my opinion Matt Smith should regenerate as an old person right there on the tower, where he got new set of regenerations and started to burst with energy, destroying everything and goes "Love from Gallifrey, boys!". Scene. And then he regenerated after yet another 20 minutes monologue about change and rememberance. Please. I am so glad RTD is back, cause he wrote two really good send offs for the Doctor.

    • @hi-viz
      @hi-viz 8 місяців тому +1

10's sendoff was overblown and drawn out. It's so dragged out that by the time the regeneration comes I was almost begging him to just do it. And in fairness to Moffat, don't forget Twice Upon a Time was a late addition, so it's quite likely the "I'd hoped there'd be stars" actually was planned to be 12's last line before Moff was forced into doing the Christmas special.

Sadly it was a major tipping point for me. I stuck with it until the very end of his last regular series - in fact I never even considered that not watching was even an option. But when Moffat spectacularly failed to deliver on that stupendous cliffhanger to World Enough and Time, I had finally had enough. New Who was such a rollercoaster of raised hopes that were then dashed, with the quality veering more wildly than the Eric Saward era, I was done at that point. I think I've just had to come to terms with the fact that I am a Classic series fan. That's where my heart truly belongs and I had to face that fact.

Chibnall’s run was a true trail of patience…one I happily tested myself with, bad story after bad story, unnecessary villain after poorly-handled historical hero, non-Doctory moment from The Doctor after dropped plot point. I’m proud to say I made it the whole way through…”Flux” and “Resolution of the Daleks” were the two best stories of the era…which doesn’t say much as the bar got set so low by this point…😵‍💫
Eras like this are good only as tests of fan patience, not much else…looking forward to Tennant’s 14th Doctor and Gatwa’s 15th, hoping the next female Doctor (PLEASE let there be another one) gets handled by RTD so we can see the full potential of such an incarnation when properly written for. Whittaker had a lot of potential, she reminded me of Davidson’s Fifth Doctor who IS one of my two “First Doctors” so, for me anyway, that was a plus, I just feel that Chibnall wrote for her very poorly…like he was one of those fans who think they know what makes good Doctor Who but really doesn’t. “Rosa” would’ve been an EXCELLENT pure historical but he had to throw in Krazlo just so it wouldn’t be…things like that and also having her regeneration episode be a multi-Doctor event just made her era much worse than it should’ve been. Don’t even get me started on “Timeless Child” 🤮
    But…I did make it through…
It certainly wasn’t for the faint of heart…😵‍💫
There are some of her stories that I do recommend, however, just to see how it COULD have been better…
First is “Rosa”, just forget the Krazlo scenes and you have a WONDERFUL pure historical adventure that sheds some nice light on the story of Rosa Parks and the start of the Civil Rights movement in the US.
Second would be “It Takes You Away”, which makes interesting use of parallel dimensions to tell a neat story about a parent’s love for their children, while also giving Graham some much-needed closure after the death of Grace…and let me highlight Graham for a moment. Series 11 Graham was just SUCH a wonderful character, an older person who doesn’t fully get the world he finds himself in yet also delivers pretty much ALL of The Doctor’s technobabble, he’s honestly the best part of Series 11. I honestly just LOVED him and kinda wish Bradley Walsh could’ve been The Doctor because he just captured the character beautifully…except he was a companion so, kinda odd…but still, a treat to watch and one should watch Series 11 just for him…😅😁
Third, of course, is “Flux”. This was Chibnall trying to bring back the Classic Who serial format and, while producing it during COVID-19 made it not as good as it could’ve been, there are definitely some fun moments and, overall, it does kinda work…had Series 13 been a full series of “Flux” we could’ve had a real masterpiece of Who on our hands. I applaud the effort, even as outside circumstances hampered it somewhat.
Finally, “Resolution of the Daleks”…time loop stories are just fun and seeing both sides of this story figuring out what’s going on and strategizing within the time loop, making The Doctor’s plans fail when they otherwise wouldn’t have, it definitely kept it exciting…
I also want to give a huge shoutout to the written fanfic from this era. Not sure if they’re still there but the BBC website did have a number of 13th Doctor fanfics that were VERY well written and showed the relationship between The Doctor and her “fam” in a much better way than the show tended to do. If you don’t like Whittaker’s Doctor, these fanfics may well change your mind…
I personally LOVED her Doctor…just wish she could’ve been written better than she generally was…my two cents…😅😁

The Capaldi era was the first time I've ever fallen asleep watching TV despite being wide awake when the episode started. I think the show had just lost it's spark for me, which in retrospect was starting to happen in Series 6 and whatever happened there just got worse when the creative team went "Hey, remember when the Doctor regenerated into an asshole who repelled viewers like the plague? What if we did that but slightly better!"
I get why people like this era as a throwback to classic but it never scratched the itch I want scratched from classic and I couldn't get into it

Peter Capaldi is peak Doctor Who for me. I fell off around Season 6 when it originally aired. I only began to catch up with my wife near the time of Jodie Whittaker’s debut so missed all of Capaldi’s era. I’m mixed on Chibnall (very mixed) but the gap in quality was even more apparent as by the time his first episodes were airing we were also in the midst of catching up on the Capaldi era, who was slowly but surely becoming my favourite Doctor with some of my favourite Who episodes. Just an era with a perfect blend of what I love about classic and new Who.

I watched the entire Whittaker era, and the writing was the biggest problem. Things setup hardly ever paid off in a satisfying way that felt earnt. It was full of cool ideas that went nowhere. Flux didn't even feel the need to tell a coherent story. I don't think a female Doctor was the problem, I was up for it. I don't think Jodie was the right casting. I don't feel her gender was even utilised. in the same way Yaz as a policewoman and Ryan as a you tuber was irrelevant.
