Hi! I was wondering if it's okay to feed your dog a mixture of kibble and homemade (and even raw) food for cost efficiency but to still reap the benefits of the better food. My dog has chronic skin allergies - thank you for making these videos!
Hello Dr Jones, - How much would you feed a 75 lb dog of this per day? It sounds great, but I want to make sure I don't under/over feed. - Also, what are your thoughts on taurine? It's importance and if supplementation is needed. Thank you!!!

Tally’s diet was 1/4 cup recipe above + 1/4 cup science diet science diet kidney care, mixed together and fed twice daily. When I was a kid, dogs were fed table scraps and not so purchased dog food. Dogs life span was much longer than today, when most people give their pets purchased pet food. Thank you to the person who suggested this video to our Dr Jones and thank you very muchly for this video! 👍 👍
My 17 year old pit bulls diet Ground turkey meatballs boiled in tumeric/ veggie broth Beef liver Sweet potato and pumpkin Local fresh eggs egg shells included Spinach, parsley and oat grass I grow in my my garden Loins mane mushroom powder. And after eating I rub coconut oil on his teeth and gums.
Hi that sounds like a great diet, I’m curious how much carbs did you give your dog when it was younger, as in what percentage of the diet was carbs and did you give your dog any fat? My Boston is so lean and we try to give him homemade food but I think he needs some extra calories, so I’m wondering if home diets also include dietary fats in the mix. Thank you
Dr. Jones is a caring and out of a broken system of money making pharmaceutical companies. Since we found him, our 2 dogs are now healthy, thriving and we aren't spending hundreds and thousands of dollars. Thank you, Dr. Jones.
He made another video a few months after this one. He shows how to prepare and what amounts and why. Simple and easy to understand. Thank you so much, you are an awesome and honest vet.
Very impressed with Dr. Jones. The pet "food" industry is one of the most unethical industries out there. I have been making homemade dog food for 20 years and I am always looking for up to date information on ensuring a balanced diet. Put the time and money into your pets food, it will save you thousands in vet bills. Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food. Thank you Dr. Jones for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you for this outstanding video and recipe. Since I have been using this recipe, my 18 month old miniature schnoodle has firm, healthy stools for the first time in his life. I am truly grateful for your expertise! Instead of ground turkey, I am purchasing whole turkeys when they are on sale. I roast them in the oven, take the meat off the bone, cut it in bite-size pieces, and package it in one pound increments in the freezer. I do the same thing with the sweet potatoes and spinach. I cook them ahead and have them in portioned containers in the freezer. I also make the eggshell powder in advance. This makes it very easy when I need to make a new batch of food. All I have to do is reach in the freezer, take out the portioned containers, thaw them, scramble 2 eggs, and assemble. Easy-peasy! Thanks again!
This is Dr. Jones' recipe: 1 lb meat (I use turkey and sometimes add lean ground beef. You could also use chicken.), 1 cup of cooked sweet potato (or carrots), 1 cup of steamed spinach (or kale or swiss chard or zuchini), 2 scrambled eggs, 1 tablespoon of sunflower or coconut oil, 1/2 teaspoon of ground egg shell. (As I use eggs, I save the shells until I have a dozen. I rinse the egg shells thoroughly, place them on a cookie sheet, and bake them in the oven at 200 degrees for approximately 15 - 20 minutes. After the egg shells cool, I put them in a coffee grinder/food processor/blender to make a powder. I store the powder in an airtight container and use as needed to provide a calcium supplement to the food I make.) @@tazio2

And pepper!, also when using Tuna, which my dog loves, you gotta go for the Tuna in Olive Oil only, it costs more but it's not salted nor does it have any Preservatives, which store brand Flake Tuna does, as it's usually bought in bulk once it's too old for the quality control guidelines from Honest Good Companies, I use "Trace Your Catch" Oceans Skipjack in Olive Oil, it's just lil half sized Can with Pull-off Tinfoil Covers and is made from Plain Tuna and EVO and much better. Also 75-90% Cooked White Rice that is still mildly hard but easily edible is amazing and helps pull toxins from the belly, like Dry White Rice pulls the water from your phone that's spent a night fully submerged in a puddle outside your house and 24 hours later you got your "Life" back. My dog loves hamburger and White rice and carrots, but the way I make my dogs food is I also make sure it's 50% Traditional Decent Grade Kibble so they get all the nutrients I can't provide, and sometimes I only add burger, chicken, or Tuna to her meal once a day. Same goes for a table spoon of lil chopped carrots, and a Table Spoon of Canned Peas that I salt rinse in a small handheld strainer with Hot Water. As for her Water I have four 6 litre Water Jugs that I let sit in my sunny front window or outside in summer for 48-72hours for Reverse Osmosis, to take the Bleach, Chlorine, Florida, and as much of the Liquid Plastics, Teflon, Forever Chemicals, Drugs, and probly hundreds of different things we have no clue about. And last year the Spray Planes didn't spray during the day, they would start when it was getting dark and hit organic fields and everything that ppl didn't want sprayed... I told ppl about it and all I got was "your a paranoid freak" or "Conspiracy Theorist" or "it's too hot for them during the day", well last years vegetable harvest in Southern Alberta, Canada was insane, Super Veggies 2-5× the size they use to be and potatoes and carrots that had 1 or more entire potatoe growing from 1 huge freaking starfish looking 3-8lb potatoes or huge wierd shaped carrots growing their own huge "carrot farms" on each single mega carrot.... and farm animals getting sick from eating on grazed grass that shouldn't be sprayed or touched.

I really love and trust your advice. It makes me feel as though I have a veterinarian friend I can go to who tell me the truth about my dog's health needs. I look forward to your videos and applying the things that I learn from you. I thank you and so does my dog.
How long did it take for yr dog to adjust to his new selection of yr homemade food? My dog has a sensitive stomach, I made him ground turkey, carrots and peas, he enjoyed it but; had diar. for two days. Today, I made my dog brocolli and ground turkey..I will keep you posted. What great changes have you noticed in yr pet as you provide them with homemade foods?
My dog hates store bought dog food. So I bake chicken then boil it to create a broth. I add finely diced potato, carrot and broccoli and spoon it over a grain free holistic turkey sweet potato kibble. The combo gives her healthy BM.....and she loves the combo. Lately I have been canning her soft food. I wish I had done this long ago because I never knew she had digestive issues. I started adding a thin small sliver of ginger and 2 drops of ACV to her drinking water. It has made such a difference.
Thanks Doc, exactly what I was looking for. I think we grow up thinking commercial dry kibble is a good thing but my miniature poodle had diarrhea for years, poor guy would sometimes lay in his bed and cry because his stomach hurt so bad. I kept taking him to the vet and they would give him meds and say a bland diet of white rice and lean meat. His breath was also horrible even after having his teeth cleaned. I finally realized that commercial dog foods were literally killing him. So I always make my own dog foods now. Wet and dry and they love it and I feel good knowing they’re not ingesting poison commercial dog foods. It’s more work but I love knowing I’m doing the right thing for my pets. Thanks for the info on correct nutrition
I feed my dogs commercial dog food but top it with organ meats, spinach, broccoli and green beans. I give them ground egg shells from my chickens and ground flax seed. They are healthy and happy dogs.
Another great video!! Thank you! As a dog rescuer, my job is to restore health to malnurished and starved dogs. Greens sound good, but not all are created equal. Spinach and kale have a high amount of the antinutrient- lectin. Lectin is a major cause of leaky gut. Also, very difficult on the digestive system. To reduce harmful lectins, Spinach and kale should be cooked separately with water discarded. Best to cook again in fresh water, then discard water again. Instead, I use arugala, broccoli, asparagus, and green beans. My fav is broccoli because it is cruciferous and kills cancer cells. Also, check out adding Moringa Oliefera....a super food used in starving nations to building health.
Been giving your supplement for over ten years, my dogs love it. I was also impressed with your reading materials, I see The Urantia Book, will continue to support your products.
I’m so happy you made this video! I want to take my dogs off of dry food. I have them on a minimal amount but didn’t know what vitamins they’d be missing without the dry food. I feed them lean beef, chicken breast and beef heart on top of a small amount of dry food.
I do the exact same thing with my flax. I grind it up and store it in the ultimate canine jar! Dr. Jones, you are my go to vet! I can't bring myself to trust another one. Thank you for the love that you share for our kids! Many blessings from California
Im wondering the same. How many cups per day for a 50 lb dog and a 20 lb puppy? I see all these youtube videos on recipes but no one mentions feeding portions.
@@kassyy1995 so for example I have a dog that weighs 75 lb I need to feed her 1.5% of her body weight so what I do is I take 75 and I multiply it by 0.015. this is just changing the percent into a decimal number that we can work with doing math. 75×.015=1.125 Or 1 1/8 There are 16 oz per pound these are all going to be impound because I use the 75 lb as the base. So 1 lb and 1/8 is essentially 1 lb 2 ounces. You're starting point if you had a 75 lb dog. So you need to feed them about 1 lb and 2 oz of food a day from a homemade food or raw food diet for your starting point and go up from there.
@@carlasmith5112 can't just do cups. When it's a homemade food or a raw food diet you can't just scoop up cups. You need to weigh the animal and you need to weigh the food portions. I just broke it down for someone else on the math. I know the difference between a 50 lb dog and a 20 lb puppy? You do realize that puppies will actually eat more during their growing phases sometimes more than even when they're an adult dog. Of course it depends on how much work or what have you that you're doing but in general most people just have pets not working animals and puppies can eat quite a bit. But it's not just what they can eat it's if you're making sure they get the nutrients that a puppy a growing puppy needs. A lot of people forget certain oils and forget certain nutrients that puppies benefit from a great deal or that allows them to develop properly without growing hip dysplasia. Mainly in larger dogs for the hip dysplasia thing but between 5 and 10 months old is the time period where you can actually have preventative measures for hip dysplasia food wise and hopefully development wise. The biggest thing with puppies is you're probably going to feed them the higher percentage and let them eat what will fill them up. If they start to get a little chunky then pull back the food portions a bit. It's actually healthy once they're an adult dog too fast them once or twice a week. That means to not feed them one or two days out of the week especially if you're feeding them the higher percentage. This is especially beneficial to dogs like Dalmatians which have kidney problems in general. Because during those days they're not taking in any protein making sure they drink or have small amounts of a creamy gravy like food treat that you've made up. But this allows their body to kind of break from processing protein. Also of course with protein and kidney problems making sure that there is ample water and encouraging them to drink more water is always beneficial.
I just made this for my dog. It was easy. Tonight I will feed it to her, but I will give her a smaller amount to acclimate her body to the new food. Thank u for the recipe.
I use a pressure cooker and toss in every single ingredient that you mentioned and set it for 20 minutes actual cook time 45 minutes and it's super easy!
Hi! Have you noticed any positive changes in your dog after feeding them this diet? Do you always use this same recipe or do you change it up? I really want to try this with my dog but I don't know if it's ok to keep feeding him the same recipe over and over. I have been trying to find multiple recipes like this one that are balanced and vet approved so I can feed my fur child a nice balance throughout the week. I would also be cooking everything and not feeding it to him raw.
You may want to consider using a slower method of cooking to retain more nutrients. I cook my dogs food in a crock pot or large electric roaster on the lowest settings. My dogs live well beyond 15 years. My 17 year old pomeranian agrees...😉 Another of my furbabies....at the age of 20, my shih tzu began having seizures after a fall. We put her to sleep after a child let her onto the porch where she fell off. Otherwise she was still going strong. 😪😪
Ok, so the ingredients all get cooked? I thought the recommendation for the kale was to steam it, and extrapolated from that that it gets added to the meat, which is left raw. I was also under the impression that heat degrades the nutrients in egg yolks, so a 20 minute cooking time would pretty much destroy value of the egg.
Thank you for putting the info in your description. I was writing it all down but noticed and was able to copy with more ease! You are great for keeping it simple and real. I love your transparency and holistic approach. Liked and subscribed!
Nut butters!!! Cocunt butter. coco butter chips. My pit loves all. All great as snacks and rewards.. . . . . Also carrots are another orange veggie I swap with sweet potatos(no white potatoes or grains for her). She loves algae tablets also for her green food; occasional spinach. Red beans are a staple and keep her nice and lean and calm and regular. Alternate with black beans. No yellow of white beans or any peas. = ). . . Those are just my own finds, mostly in total accords with your own ideas. Love your channel. Cheers.
You are the best doc.. Thank you. When I feed her a raw diet, taking her off of commercial dog food, everything changes, her coat, her skin tone, her enthusiasm, her motivation, no more year starting around her eyes. It's incredible.

I am trying the things you said to see if it helps. I wish I had taken her off the kibble years ago. She actually likes one of the expensive brands, but it smells "chemically" to me. Excellent video. However I wouldn’t add sunflower oil to my dogs food, as it’s genetically modified and heavily sprayed with glyphosate. I use olive oil instead, same goes for not using sunflower oil in human food!
@@SatishYarramsetti would this be a cooking oil ? I’m interested in adding it to my dogs food but mine are on a raw food diet . Would this still be ok to add ?
I'm thinking that Coconut oil is the best option. I found information that shows it also is anti microbial, anti fungal and anti bacterial. It protects against Giardia and other parasites.
Thank you so much!!! I've been researching the subject of home made dog food. This video is the most straightforward video I've seen. I took my best buddy of 13 years for her last ride to her vet on 1/6/22 due to advanced stage lymphoma. It was heartwrenching. I have another buddy that is 5 yrs old. I want to do all I can to prevent diseases that seem to be on rise in our pets. I also watched your video on natural flea and tick repellent. Also a straightforward video! I firmly believe that the conventional pet food, flea and tick treatments are a big contributor in the diseases we're seeing in our pets. Again. Thank you so much!

Thank you!! I had just started making my Pom's food but I didnt know about the oil which I will add. I used Chicken, Sweet potato, Squash and Spinach. QUESTION: How do you PREPARE the ingredients (ground turkey, egg, etc) in this video?
Dr. Jones, I was going to order your supplement but seen that you as every dog food manufactures & organic dog food makers. put Sodium Selenite in their products. It is a derivative from LYE & is Toxic, it builds up after years of use. Selenium is a must have both for humans as well as animals. A natural source is Selenomethionine: Selenomethionine is an amino acid that contains selenium. It exists in two forms known as enantiomers, including L-selenomethionine and D-selenomethionine. L-selenomethionine is biologically active in humans and many other life forms. I have a very sick dog & have done a lot of research for what food to feed him. I would like your input on this, for I am still researching on it. But from my reading, sodium Selenite is not good for animals or humans. I appreciate all the info you share with all of us, I live in North Idaho & there is NO Holistic Vets here. You have saved not only a lot of vet bills but many pets lives. Thank You, & God Bless

I started with the homemade dog food back in 1995 with my first Golden, fixed his skin up and he lost weight. he lived till 13yrs. he loved his puppy stew which is what i called it at the time. My understaning is that an egg is nutritionally complete , has it all except vit c...and dogs make their own. if someone knows otherwise would you please share with me, thanks. love your videos and have expanded my knowledge big time. I am on my 3rd dog now and he is a 2 year old GSD. When you make your own food it is not hard. My Mom fed our dogs that we had as kids this way. They were robust and healthy. Ultimately I think raw is the best and more natural but not always easy for folks. I travel and camp alot with my pup and having something ready to go is good. he does not move well between cooked and raw although he does get some choice raw as treats, like his bones and some steak.

Hey Dr Jones. I just discovered your videos. I'm very thankful to you for breaking it all down. I hope you have a video on homemade dogfood for people like me who are on a fixed income. I just want to tell you that I appreciate the information. I rescued 2 dogs off the street, and they go through about 50 lbs of kibble a month. I want to start incorporating homemade food into their kibble to help them get the vitamins and minerals they need. Unfortunately, I cannot afford supplements nor can I afford to feed them only homemade food. (They are American pitties and one weighs around 100 lbs.). They eat a lot, lol. But I was wondering could you please tell me what a good ratio would be with homemade added to their kibble? Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this video! I have 3 small dogs and have been making their food for over 2 years. Once a week I make it in a crockpot. I never thought to add eggs or sunflower oil. I put them on my shopping list. I need to get a coffee grinder too. Thanks again! ❤️
Oh... I forgot about the wonders of crockpots 🤩 I have recently taken my pug off dry dog food, been boiling carrots, sweet potato and peas together until tender enough to mash with a potato masher, then I take a skillet to the ground turkey, mix it all up together and then baggie it up in sandwhich bags 1 cup in each , then freeze them. I would totally love to try the hands free method next time lol 😆
@@strongspear1918 I said at the end that I would like to try the "hands-free" method when It comes to cooking the food. The process I do now takes up my attention sometimes from other things I want to do, but with a crockpot I could throw the ingredients in and come back later.
So basically, you are making homemade commercials to push your product. Well done! I like the fact you give me a choice. I can supplement your (easy) product I can buy or I can do the work, and make my own. Thank you, Dr. Jones for showing me how to love my doggos even better. 👏 👏 👏

I make most my own dog food BUT I do feed a dry kibble as well. I have a dog that was diagnosed with a rare skin cancer. SO I am giving him vitamin E and Curcumin along with CBD and green leafy veg's. I make meatballs with Turkey and veal if its on sale and grind up or chop up spinach and broccoli. SO FAR no more cancer tumors. He did have an operation and is on Doxycycline for Lyme disease. BUT he is healthy it seems and very active! (I then have TOAST! lol)

When I was a kid, dogs were fed table scraps and not so purchased dog food. Dogs life span was much longer than today, when most people give their pets purchased pet food. Thank you to the person who suggested this video to our Dr Jones and thank you very muchly for this video! 👍 👍

Thank you

Fish, eggs, sweet potatoes. Can't go wrong. I prefer fish because I live in an area where I can go catch 2 or 3 fairly easily. Can't beat the price.

@ginacurly I just crack it in the pan and fry it until the yoke is fully cooked.

Hi what is your recipe please ?
After the egg shells cool, I put them in a coffee grinder/food processor/blender to make a powder. I store the powder in an airtight container and use as needed to provide a calcium supplement to the food I make.) @@tazio2

no avocados as well better Google it before giving

This looks so well informed and interesting, but I was left wondering only...about portions per kilo of the dog.
Start with 1.5% of body weight then up to ~2.5% if needed for more active dog
@@kateajurors8640 sorry I’m slow but 1.5 of what? Oz? How do I even measure that
Im wondering the same.
75×.015=1.125
Or 1 1/8
There are 16 oz per pound these are all going to be impound because I use the 75 lb as the base.
Just EXACTLY what I was looking for!!! Thanks so much for the time and energy to do this video!
My 17 year old pomeranian agrees...😉
Another of my furbabies....at the age of 20, my shih tzu began having seizures after a fall. We put her to sleep after a child let her onto the porch where she fell off. Otherwise she was still going strong. 😪😪
@@bamasher4384 I'm so sorry about your dog.
@@bamasher4384 Have you used Dr. Jones' supplement before?
Ok, so the ingredients all get cooked? I thought the recommendation for the kale was to steam it, and extrapolated from that that it gets added to the meat, which is left raw. I was also under the impression that heat degrades the nutrients in egg yolks, so a 20 minute cooking time would pretty much destroy value of the egg.

I am on my 3rd dog now and he is a 2 year old GSD. When you make your own food it is not hard. My Mom fed our dogs that we had as kids this way. They were robust and healthy.
@@a.lucille8877 Please explain what taking ground turkey to a "skillet" has to do with a "crockpot?"
@@strongspear1918 I said at the end that I would like to try the "hands-free" method when It comes to cooking the food. The process I do now takes up my attention sometimes from other things I want to do, but with a crockpot I could throw the ingredients in and come back later.
I wish I knew about this webinar sooner. I would have attended. I want to change my fur babies' diet off canned foods.
So basically, you are making homemade commercials to push your product. Well done! I like the fact you give me a choice. I can supplement your (easy) product I can buy or I can do the work, and make my own. Thank you, Dr. Jones for showing me how to love my doggos even better. 👏 👏 👏
This guy is great. I’ll buy his products to support his work!
Hi Dr. Jones! I really appreciate all your help and how much you care about the animal's! Are these dog food recipes safe to feed puppies as well?
I can't tell you how much I appreciate every single video and all your advice. My 8 year old dog has had recurring bouts of intestinal problems ever since adopting her 4 years ago and I want to try making a fresh balanced diet to see if that helps her. Food is medicine! Thank you again
(I then have TOAST! lol)
Thanks for sharing
How do you cook everything?
How much do you feed them a day?
Thank You so much. I wish you were near me so I could bring my dog to you. She has cushings, CT and high ALP levels they contribute to the cushings 😢
Thank you! Great video. I have been cooking for my dogs for years. They love it and they are super healthy. Love and Light!
I love you ❣️ you look so healthy too your face is glowing ❣️❣️ i can wait feed my dog this recipe 💖💖💖
First, thank you SO much for what you do. I am so grateful for your trustworthy teaching and advice. I am wondering how you might change this recipe to be fitting for CKD (I saw you respond to a comment below that this recipe might be a little high in protein)? Thank you again tons!! I hope you know how much what you do means to myself and I'm sure many others as well!!
I have a 3.7 to 4 pound Yorkie. Can i use this exact recipe for him and just feed him is portion size which is 1/4 cup twice a day?💁🏾♀️. Thanks 🤗
WE make Leo's food for him - he was re-homed to us - a lively boy - but we might be missing some supplements, vits or mins. Question - how much do you feed the dogs per 10lbs, etc
1 cup per 20 lbs... mine is 17 pounds and I give him 1/2 cup twice a day😊
I was wondering about the amounts as well. I have to make sure to give mine enough because they’re puppies. They often eat more than an adult dog. If they don’t get enough they can get hip dysplasia among other issues.
Do you feed your dog a little in the morning and dinner time? Also any dog treats?
@@bettymacallister3475 Hi Betty - yes - we feed him about 1/3-1/2 c in the am and same at dinner. He gets dried minnows for treast and darn it all, his "Dad dog" gives him wee bites of table food!
Really appreciate the information.
Great video Dr. Jones. I cook for my 2 Yorkies with real fresh ingredients (actually all of what you listed with alternate proteins such as turkey, organic chicken, steak, lamb, beef organ meats). My little girl (12 1/2 years old) developed a liver infection that had her in hospital for a week. She is home now and on antibiotics and back to her feisty self. The specialist said that she might have Cushings and she has test coming up with her new holistic vet. Can you do a video for a diet addressing Cushings.
Great video Doc !!
Thanks 👍🏻
My pleasure!
Thank you! 2 questions: Do you recommend shilajit minerals for dogs? I take them in a tablet myself. 2: unsweetened banana chips ok for treats? All the dog treats I've found at the store are expensive and have lots of fillers. Thank you so much! Luna's Mom
That’s a lucky dogs 🐶 ❤ I wish every dogs were treated like this. Thanks so much for sharing precious info cause many of us can’t always afford vet care and it’s our animals that suffer so to share those tips and trick benefit our animals ❤🙏
