Hey, I started using this as a base for my dog's food about a year ago. I've added things a long they way, I use ground chicken instead of canned, I added 2lbs of 97/3 ground beef, and 2 lbs of ground pork. I also added cauliflower, brussels sprouts, spinach and sunflower oil. But what I found in my research, is that sweet potato skins and bad for dogs, they find them difficult to digest them, so I started skinning them. And I cook the rice (brown long grain) in bone broth. And since no dog food is perfectly balanced, I added a multivitamin. to her dinner meal. She's 10 now, and I have found that since I started feeding her this alternate version of yours is that she has a lot more energy, seems happier and is NEVER bored of her food. She loves it, and we are happier that she seems a lot ore healthy. So thanks, and don't forget to peel those sweet potatoes.
interesting on the sweet potato skins. I have a dog with a collapsed trachea and the vet specialist recommended I keep the skins on. I have to blend her food so maybe that is the difference?
I tried the Farmer's Dog food only once until I realized it was hard on our budget and the dry ice was long gone by the time I got home from work to get the box out of the heat.😒 Our dog really liked it. @@RealLife_D_and_J Thankyou for caring so much about your dogs food. I wondered whether you had considered not cooking and freezing it raw. I have watched Veterinary Secrets and he feeds his dogs all raw, as he believes it is better for them, as they would never naturally eat cooked food and that they are still essentially the same as wild dogs..
I add beef, turkey or pork and livers or gizzards. My dogs do not tolerate chicken. I also use brocolli, carrots cauliflower and greenbeans for veggies, they do not digest peas well. I mix brown and white rice and add some turmeric. I also cook mine in the instant pot but I do not do 28 lbs so I can see why the oven is better.

Thank YOU so much for taking the time to explain this to me. I really appreciate this. The Instant pot idea is a great idea too... I have a slow cooker, do you think that will work too?
@@JudiChristopher I have never used a slow cooker. I put in my ingredients, add water or broth and it is done in 8 minutes. Once it is done, I do a manual release, add the rice and organ meat because I precook the liver and let it sit covered for 10 minutes to cook the rice. It is so easy! Get an Instantpot, they are fantastic and save so much time.
Well Done!! Great video. I think more people should be getting their dogs off of processed food. I made my dog homemade food and she lived to 18 years old as a medium sized dog and no vet visits due to illness.
@@SleeplessinOC She loved it. She had a bowl of kibble available at all times for snacking but she rarely ate any of it. I had to chuck it and refresh it for fear of it going stale.
Good for you, I do the same thing with my chihuahua she is a picky eater, so I start making her home-made food and I notice she doesn't gasp for air while she is sleeping, and she has lots of energy
Can you do beef instead of chicken? And I think our little yourkie/ Maltese gets suck if chicken cause I make chicken all the time like to mix it up..do you have any suggestions what else we can use to change it up ? We do give her a powder supplement once a day..
@@cynthiahodder6238 Of course. I used to make beef, chicken, lamb or fish. Just depended what was on sale when it was time to make a new batch. Mt dog was a blue Heeler and she wasn't a fussy eater. You may have to try different protiens and veg until you find a recipe your dog likes. Maybe make small batches until you hit a winner. I used to mix up the veg as well to keep it interesting. The other thing is to make home made bone broth and let it cook slowly for a full day or two until you get a jelly consistency. this is great for dog's joints.
Thank you for sharing this. I have 2 big dogs and your recipe gave me an idea what to cook for them and how much to give them. I appreciate all the effort you put in making this video.
Thank You for sharing your recipe for dog food. Loved how you told us how much your dogs eat and how many days it makes food for 2 dogs. Also like how you told us the amount of each ingredient you bought, I think you forgot the rice but no night deal on that. And the cost if it added up was nice. Can you please tell me what method do you use to heat the food up to feed it to your dog because my dogs will not eat cold food for sure. Thanks Again, You did a very nice video as you kept steady along talking and showing what you were doing and you have a nice voice and kept my attention.
I've been making our pup’s dog food about 3-4 years. I've tweaked it several times and don't have that much freezer space. I've not yet used eggs and will start, and I also use hearts and liver. Very healthy, and economical. Thanks for the video!
Just started to make our dog's food. He (Leo) seems to enjoy home cooked meals so much that i have decided to make it a regular thing. Thanks so much for this video. I will definitely use your model in future cook days. 😊
Thank you so much for this! Our picky eater has been turning her nose up at everything we've tried EXCEPT for some cans of super-expensive dog food from our vet's office. But she would not stop hovering around us during the preparation process, and when she finally got a serving, LOOK OUT! She absolutely loved it. Will be fine tuning the serving sizes and supplements with our vet, but this is a welcome foundation for our dog's health. Many, many thanks!
You did an excellent job for this being your very first video! Thank you for sharing your recipe. You doggies must be very happy & healthy! Really grateful for this information.
What a great video, I’ve been making my dog food for about a year now, but I love you “meat loaf” idea!!! Typically dogs and cats should have 80% meat products and 20% veggies, I switch it up seasonally with the veggies and I always add 2 freshly grated apples (no seeds) thank you so much for the video!!
This recipe is more appropriately called Vegetable Loaf but it is certainly not "meat loaf" as the meat is such a marginal ingredient compared to all the vegetation .
Thank you for sharing. I adopted a ten year old former puppy mill breeder over 8 years ago. I made a similar recipe for her. And she lived to be over 18
Thank you so much for this video! I have 4 dogs (2 small and 2 large) and all the other videos make such a small batch and have expensive ingredients that make it not worth it. It’s encouraging to hear you’ve had success with this for 7 years.
I can’t tell you how much I appreciated your video you did such a great job. Such good detail I really appreciated how you broke down the cost at the end and how you specify your container size and the poundage per container. Thank you for all your doing for all of us us.
Thank you for sharing your recipe. My concern in all this mix is the canned chicken due to the very high sodium content in it and peas. Peas and legumes are said to lean towards weaking the heart.
Thank you for your feedback. We no longer use canned chicken or peas in our recipe. Please take a look at our updated video for this recipe to see the changes we made. ua-cam.com/video/YRBSkB0l8jY/v-deo.html&lc=UgyKXzoSPp1oM3U_O494AaABAg
Also grains are bad for dogs, I'd use at least 50-60% meat and higher protein may be hard on kidneys and absolutely no canned anything including aluminum trays to bake, what?
I don't understand why rice is being used in so many dog recipes... it's not good and has no place in their diet. Vegetables should always be emulsified/ pureed. They can't break down the cell wall. So we need to do it for them. Should be 80 % muscle meat and then organ meat and the rest is pureed greens, cucumber dandelion greens lettuce, zucchini etc. I give pureed fruit for a snack. With animal essentials seaweed calcium supplement recommended by my holistic vet
Thank you for sharing your recipe! I’ve been making my dogs food for a few years now. I like your process and I’ll be adding the egg shells now. Thank you for taking the time to post your video!
I grind up my egg shells into a fine powder to make my own calcium capsules. I used calcium powder in my garden too. Our dog gets a vitamin mineral supplement rec. by vet. Buy an 8 oz tub of it online. It's a professional veterinary formula, Rx Essentials for Dogs. Any other suggestions?
@@kathleenrayner1234 they state several reasons. Commercial pet foods are using peas, Legumes and potatoes as fillers in place of the grains previously used when they went to grain free foods. Peas should not be given to dogs with kidney problems. High pea and legume in diets interacts negatively with taurine which is very important in their diet. Google about peas and find out more details. The FDA has connected grain free diets to DCM.
You are the first video I found making bulk! I like to make things in bulk so I only have to think about it every couple of months rather than every week! Thank you so much!
Awesome, I'm on my second batch. My dog Rocky had abdominal surgery 2 months ago. After he recovered he would not eat kibble. Rocky absolutely loves this recipe and his doctor approves!
Love love love the recipe and that we don't need fancy equipment to make it. I also have 2 Yorkies, a 6-year-old picky eater and a super active 5-month-old, but I don't have the freezer space so will try making a 1/4 of the recipe. Thank you so much again for sharing!

I was just at UA-cam Veterinary Secrets and was watching "Essential Ingredients for homemade Dog food" and for those who wonder how good they are doing for nutritional value of the food here you will see that this is a really good recipe! In the contents in the description box of that video he describes what vitamins they are getting from what she is telling us here to put in the mix. This is a very important video and I thank you for posting it. I am excited to get started on this for our loved one. :).
I stopped using ground when i realized dogs like humans need to chew mouthsized chunks to get gastric juices flowing...you could update description to give heads up... After 2 years feeding sams and costco meat For a few cents difference Costco repeatedly seems higher quality.
I’m definitely going to try this - maybe a smaller batch. Thanks for the detailed instructions & also for stating the amount you feed your dogs. Some of the recipes I’ve seen don’t tell you how much to feed. My dogs would want a lot bigger servings!
Thank you!! My Pekingese was diagnosed with diabetes and has since refused to eat commercial dog food. I've been making roughly the same recipe as you, but in much smaller batches. I really appreciate your method of making larger batches and will be doing this in the future. Thanks again!
Thank you for the kind words, and so sorry to hear about your Pekingese. We are actually going to have to start making this in smaller batches soon ourselves. We are thinking about trying an Instant pot or crockpot.
I make something similar for my diabetic dog. I worked it all out on a spreadsheet, with nutritional values, calories, fat, carbs, etc, and my vet approved. She gave me a chart from a textbook showing what they need, which I tried to recreate in my recipe. I cook it in my big turkey roaster. My dog needs more calories because he lost a lot of weight, so mine includes lean beef, turkey and pork, all cooked, boiled and rinsed to remove as much fat as possible. It also includes a lot of frozen vegetables and dried beans, brown rice, barley, oatmeal, and whole wheat pasta. Your dog might need different stuff, but that’s what is working for ours. He had stopped eating completely, so we were desperate. He really loves this stuff though.
Thanks for sharing this video. I live in Thailand and we eat rice everyday. We have dogs and always cook rice and mix with cooked chicken/liver/veggies every meal.
Question: If I did this in a slow cooker, would about 35 minutes be long enough to cook it all? I don't have a pressure cooker, but it would be a good way to put my slow cooker to use.
The main recipe we use for our regular raw food is we use our meat grinder and buy a large box of chicken legs or wings and grind them up and then just add in some carrot and Kale and some Blueberries and mix it together and it actually cost us less than the kibble was costing us we do it this way because the chicken bones that grind up are the calcium for the dogs and every morning I break and egg ontop of the raw food.. it takes about 15 minute to grind up two entire boxes of chicken legs and wings and add the minced up carrot and Kale and etc and then freeze it in 1/2lb freezer bags and then we just have to pull out three bags the night before so that it thaws in the refrigerator and everytime we feed them we put three new bags in the fridge to thaw and it works great but our mixture is truly RAW
Been using this natural diet for my Bichon Frise's since they were pups and they love it and the sweet potato helps keep their digestive systems in good shape.
This was very helpful. I have two Scotties and I noticed that they both smell awful, like the horrible canned food they're eating. I thought about making homemade dog food and then happened across your video. This is great! I plan on doing this recipe this week. I guess I will have to slowly introduce the change especially with my 7 year old male. I think my 17 month old female will do just fine. Thanks! I really appreciate your video. Great job!!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm just starting out with home-cooked feeding, so I'll be grabbing the ingredients this weekend. My dogs are a 'bit' bigger than your Yorkies, so I'll be making big batches as well.
I make something very similar. Bag if mixed veggies, sweet potato, can of pumpkin, ground turkey, brown rice, beef liver, eggs with the shells (for the calcium), and some herbs for health and flavor. I do all of mine stove top but like the oven idea. Good food for the babies.
Glad to see I’m not the only one who cooks for their pup. My bloodhound does not like her food all mixed together so basically we precook the meats and freeze, then she gets whatever veggies we eat along with her meat. She gets fresh fruits and veggies too, a little cheese and can’t forget a peanut butter sandwich somewhere during the day. She won’t eat rice but likes gluten free noodles must have something to do with a bloodhounds nose. It was a fun video to watch! 😁
Thank you so much for sharing. After all the dog food recalls, I’ve been making my dog food for about six months now for my lab. He loves it of course, but I was looking for a bulk recipe and these are items I know he likes. Even if I could make 2 months at a time, it will save me time. Glad to know I’m not the only one who does this. 😘
Glad it was helpful! We started to make our own dog food because of food allergies and all the poor ingredients in commercial dog food and our dogs love it!
Circling back in case others were wondering about trying the recipe. I made this (substitutions included ground chuck, squash and zucchini for the broccoli) and added some blueberries because that’s what I had on hand. This was so incredibly easy to prepare. A food processor is a must to speed things along, but otherwise amazingly quick. My sons dog is also here for a bit while he travels and has never eaten homemade. Both dogs loved it, they are excited to eat and neither had any tummy issues. Each are 65 or so pounds, having it in bulk was super convenient. Thanks again for sharing. For those who are uncomfortable, perhaps cut it in half. I will be using this staple and balanced recipe going forward. : )
@@stopthemadness4006 Hi Shelly, how much did you feed your 65 lb Pooch? I have a yr old 65 lb golden retriever & 36 lb senior cocker spaniel- trying to figure out how much to feed them. Excited to try this recipe!!
@Liz Firrigno I feed 2 cups twice a day. I alternate the meats as well, using grass fed turkey, chicken and always include red meats and fish when I can find low sodium. He loves sweet potatoes and pumpkin, you can add apples and greens. I do use the supplements suggested here, flax, and cod oil. I try to stay ahead with ample in the freezer. I use Royal Canine for labs and twice a week I reduce to a cup and a half of homemade and add a cup of dry. My vet offered very little guidance, mentioning he is at ideal weight, healthy coat, teeth, etc. I never thought I would make my dogs food, but with the recalls and nonsense with the pet foods, I feel this is a better option.
Thank you for sharing your recipe. I bought skinless chicken breasts for $.99 lb and canned most of the 80 lbs I bought. I’ll definitely use that in this recipe. As I prep for any future necessity I no longer add salt to my canned meats as they will be used for our dogs’ food also.

Hi, I've watched your video like three times, I love it. I am wondering if the recipe above 28lbs is one batch or the three that you normally make? Also how long does that 28lbs last you?
One batch is 28lbs, and we make 3 batches at a time. We use containers that hold 4lbs each, and each container last us 1 week for 2 Yorkie dogs. So one 28lb batch will last us 7 weeks. It will differ based on how many dogs you are making this for, the size of your dogs, and how much you feed them each day.
@@RealLife_D_and_J In the recipe it says it fills a 4c. container, and in your comment you said the containers hold 4lbs. Does each cup weigh a lb or was this a mixup? Also, Go Niners!

yes! love seeing other recipes. I've been cooking our 2 senior pugs (10 yrs) and our toothless lil old lady yorkie (rescue, vet estimated about 14 yrs old) for over 5 yrs. Our pugs are chunky and our yorkie is at a great weight but we feed her fromm's pate for the most nutritional value and their stew for a 'treat' or topper. I use oats instead of rice, carrots, ground turkey or chicken/beef livers, green beans to be a low cal filler and add turmeric and a few shakes of black pepper. I avoid some things like eggs because the vet said that was a lot of phosphorus for our yorkie. We also feed a low cal fromm's kibble to our puglets to make sure they get the nutrition they need. Once we warm up their stew to just room temp we add a probiotic, brewer's yeast and fish oil - they love it. We only add the oats to make sure they have a healthy grain addition, or sometimes I use barley.
Your comments were excellent. I give Greek yoghurt as a probiotic ( sauerkraut too ) I have brewers yeast Do you just add that to their food bowls at time of feeding ?? Thank you 💖💖💖

I would add flaxseed, it’s excellent for them.
Well Done!! Great video. I think more people should be getting their dogs off of processed food. I made my dog homemade food and she lived to 18 years old as a medium sized dog and no vet visits due to illness.
Amazing. Could you tell though if she enjoyed her food and not just eating it because she was hungry?
I appreciate all the time and effort you put in to making this step by step. Especially the cost breakdown. Thank you, thank you!
Glad it was helpful and we appreciate the kind words.
Your welcome.
The things we do for our beloved pets ❤ they are so worth the effort
Yes they are!
Great to hear, glad it we could help.
You did an excellent job for this being your very first video! Thank you for sharing your recipe. You doggies must be very happy & healthy! Really grateful for this information.
Glad you enjoyed it and it provided some value to you!
I would speak to your vet, now recommendation is no more that 50/50% meat to veggies.
You are so welcome!
I can’t tell you how much I appreciated your video you did such a great job. Such good detail
I really appreciated how you broke down the cost at the end and how you specify your container size and the poundage per container.
Thank you for all your doing for all of us us.
You are so welcome Teresa!
Wow this is amazing! It’s a lot of work but anything for our pups. It’s nice to see people go above and beyond caring for the little nuggets 🥰
It really is!
And because veterinary prices and commercially-prepared food prices are getting ridiculous.
I discovered Lehman's canned chicken, which has NO additives, not even salt.
I've read where rice is high arsenic content; I wondered same thing.
Thank you for sharing your recipe! I’ve been making my dogs food for a few years now. I like your process and I’ll be adding the egg shells now. Thank you for taking the time to post your video!

I keep hearing from veteranian's that peas are not good for dogs, especially small dogs. I home cook for my little Yorkie and do not include peas.
Susan Reiss. Do the vets say why peas are not good. ?
@@kathleenrayner1234 they state several reasons. Commercial pet foods are using peas, Legumes and potatoes as fillers in place of the grains previously used when they went to grain free foods. Peas should not be given to dogs with kidney problems. High pea and legume in diets interacts negatively with taurine which is very important in their diet. Google about peas and find out more details. The FDA has connected grain free diets to DCM.

Sounds great!

I love to see this! This recipe is not for everyone, and because all dogs are not alike you should make adjustments that accommodate your dog.

When I started I followed a recipe very much like this one - you get a feel for how much to make and how to freeze etc. I have a Carin Terrior and a Shih Tzu . I make approximate 5lb batches. Started with 10 lb batches but was just too much. The pounds are the meat. By the time you add eggs and miscellaneous it gets to be a lot. My dogs love it and have had amazing health changes. They were older when I changed to homemade. Good luck keep it simple and get used to making batches.🍀🍀
@@gaypreator8547 thank you. I have a 57.5 pound German Shepherd.
@@lunalight6732 😀 that’s a big one start with a 10# recipe. Good luck.
Thank you for your video!! I added ginger root in my batch. I made my first batch tonight. I can’t wait to feed my german shepherd.
Wonderful! We have started to add Turmeric powder to our food now as well.
I add turmeric, ginger, and ground flax. I will be adding the blended eggs. My neighbor has an organic farm and we get our liver and eggs from her.
Thank you so much for making this video, and all the attention you put into sharing the details and cost and portion breakdowns….
i greatly appreciate your time 🙏🏽
You are so welcome!
I just learned about black pepper and tumeric. Healthy. Like a had tsp for all that food but the tumeric will be good for your senior dog and will help puppy too. You are wonderful to share all this. I have a German Shepard pup and a schnoodle pup. If I make the food which I enjoy doing I know what they are eating.
Thank you
Hi, I've watched your video like three times, I love it.
So enjoyed your presentation! You were very at ease sharing your information with us. I just began making my dog food a few weeks ago. My recipe is very similar except I use spinach. Please share with me your supplement. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for the kind words. The powder supplement we use is this one: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083QPP9F7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
yes! love seeing other recipes.
Thank you 💖💖💖
@@kathleenrayner1234 yes! i just add it to their food after it is heated to room temp. Your so welcome love!
Thank you so much Chelle Copley. I have two shihtzus in my dog family. They absolutely love fresh raw green beans. I love that you call your pugs “ puglets “ Awesome 👍👍👍👍👍💕
