Those few of you watching this that AREN’T dog owners probably won’t understand this, but as a dog owner, if making your own food makes your dog healthier, happier, and live even just a week longer, it’s 100% worth it. ❤
Avoid using aluminum pans. Get a large stainless steel bowl. Also using a paint mixer in a plastic bucket could introduce plastic shavings into the dog food.
I fed my dog a homemade recipe of ground turkey, liver, spinach, carrots, blueberries and sweet potatoes. I added 5 Defenders Mushroom powder in her later years. She was generally healthy and lived to 17.5 and when it was time for her to leave us it was very peaceful and due purely to old age.
I took my little dog to the vet. He did blood work. He asked me what did I feed my dog. I thought ought oh he is going to fuss at me. He remarked she had the healthiest blood in a dog he had seen in a long time. I told him I cook for her! I was so proud.

We make our dogs home made dog food all the time. They love it. In place of ground turkey we use chicken breasts. We found the recipe online. We put everything in the instant pot and it’s perfect. We also freeze it for them
You can add 6 eggs to that 2 week recipe and put the eggshells in the oven for awhile and then grind the eggshells to powder and mix in the food for calcium. 😊
A word of advice on using your Instant Pot.... Do not drop your ingredients into the pot with inner pot inside the base. The base is sensitive and that little spring sensor could be damaged as a result. It's better to fill the inner pot while it's on your counter and then place it gently into to base. I had an Instant Pot fail on me that was brand new and realized that is what happened. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I will definitely try it for my dog. ❤
Very much appreciate your tip on the instant pot. I'm a 70 year old widow and I believe you should learn something new everyday. God bless you and your family 👑🙏💞✝️🐾🕯

I had a great laugh when you said the dog food company provided you with a recipe to hold you over until the next shipment arrived 😂 The only reason this company can still be in business is so many people won't take an hour a week to process healthy homemade food. I have a 12 year old lab that gets my homemade food made weekly. She has leukemia for the last 2.5 years and her health has completely reversed. Im going to try your recipe today. Thanks!
You have a farm house sink. Dump it all in there a stir it with a huge spoon. Just be cautious of the turmeric, or try it my itself in the sink. Should be just fine. Thanks
Okay. So for all those who want to try this but don’t have an instapot or a lot of time. Get a baking tray like the one he is using to mix, place all the ingredients in it including water or chicken stock. Preheat the oven at 375, cover and place in the oven for 30mins. Let it cool then portion. I cook for my dog every 2 weeks and it’s the easiest thing to do.
@@leftieknitter7392 the rice will cook in the oven. Just make sure to add enough water to cover. I always check after 20mins and add more water if the rice isn’t soft. This has made my life so much easier.

I separate our dogs food into 4 cups in ziplog bags and freeze them. Every night we put a new bag in the fridge, come morning time the food is thawed and ready to be served. 2 cups in the AM with 1 organic egg, and 2 cups at 5pm with apple slices. One thing we add to the instapot when cooking his food are grinded up egg shells, we also add rosemary to his food. We've always had American Bulldogs, our last one was a beast (in a good way)😂 he died a few years ago, but lived to be 15yo. I never thought we would ever get another dog (too sad to even think about it) but we missed having a dog so we just got another AB, he is a few months old. We cook the same recipe to our new member like we did to our dog that passed away, and he is loving it.
I make about six gallons of food each week for two 90 plus pound Standard bull dogs...there's never any leftovers! Mostly veggie, oat, and pasta or rice in a turkey stock.
I've got two dogs with IBS, one front door, one back door. I've been working with a vet that practices Eastern medicine for 3 years now. Western practice vets offered my dog only steroids and I wasn't going down that path. My dog had lost so much weight from multiple bowel movements daily. The vet told me to make Congee for my dogs. Within one day, my dog started to get better and now has no issues, although he will always have the immune system IBS. I use ground turkey and ground beef fried up and placed into a 32 ounce containers, make sure to include the fat from the beef. For veggies I use green beans, yellow squash, zucchini, broccoli and sometimes beets. I cook them in the microwave, mix them together and put them in 16 ounce containers. Once they cool down they go in the freezer. When it's time to make a batch of dog food I take one cup of rice to 4 cups of water and add about two thumbs of fresh ginger grated. Then I just take one container of meat and one of veggie thawed and mix it together. To it I add powdered vitamins. I keep a month of food in the freezer at a time and just take out a weeks worth and make the rice. I also use lentils and quinoa instead of rice, alternating them using the same 1 to 4 ratio. All that food looks great, but I would add a fat if you are only using ground turkey. A tablespoon of olive oil per 2lbs of ground turkey would do. If your adding beef, no oil is necessary. Congee is a great food for a dog with an upset stomach or bowel issues. Chicken is considered a "hot" food and not recommended for dogs with stomach issues. Just passing on what I wish I had known years ago and something that truly works.
Thanks for the recipe. I cook chicken and add rice for my 6 shepherds and cane corsos, and free feed dry food. It is spendy. I'm wondering, by adding the extras if it would pay for itself by feeding way less meat than I use now. Hmmmmm, I will have to put the pencil to work!😁🤣. Thanks again
@@hotgranny4surewhat I used as a general guide was 1/3 protein 1/3 rice and 1/3 veggies. For protein I would use meat along with beans, usually canned kidney or garbanzo, sometimes even pork and beans with the sauce. They always loved what I put together. After a year I had the vet check their blood for their protein levels and everything looked fine, they even lost the 20 lb they were overweight. 😊
UPDATE: I made your recipe and can happily say that my dog loves it. I'd like to share something I did a bit differently that you may, or may not find helpful: Instead of peeling and cutting the sweet potatoes, I took the entire bag, lightly scrub brushed each, and simply placed in the pressure cooker with about 1 cup of water for approximately 10 minutes. When it was done, the peels practically fell off - very easy to remove with a fork. Then the sweet potatoes can be easily mashed and mixed with everything else. Thanks again, your recipe is great!
It's great that you're telling about this recipe but you just damaged the company by one, taking their kindness to get you through to a next order by sending you the recipe so you could feed your dog, and, they will probably never ever send a recipe out to somebody else that found themselves in your situation. It would have been wiser to say hey I order from a dog food company, without giving the company name, and because my order was late in arriving I got a recipe to make dog food and I want to share it with y'all. It was very ungrateful and unwise for you to name that company, shame on you!
@@rebelbell2195 I don't know where you get that I'm naming the company that shared the recipe. Two different things. The food I ordered that made my dog sick was from Farmers Dog. Here’s a tip, buy another pot for the instant pot. Makes it easier to cook multiple batches. This from someone who makes her dog’s food & has 2 -8qt IPs plus a 3 qt when we are away from home for a month, these pots are great. I also mixed the food in the food grade “busing” gray pans from Sam’s club. Makes mixing easier.❤ btw you can skip cooking spinach and frozen peas cause the hot meat will cook it down, plus reheating the food will cook the veggies before eating. I choose to make our golden’s food because she could not hold down dog food as a pup. Plus dogs are dying sooner due to cancer and other illnesses, so its worth it to know whats in my babie’s food. Been doing this almost 7 years!
You are so right. We lost our 2 big babies, one a Golden to cancer. It was horrible! Since then I have read so much about how very bad the dog food is invthe USA. I HAD DOGS IN CUBA UNTIL THE GOVERNMENT TOOK EVERYTHING INCLUDING OUR HOUSE WITH MY 2 FOX TERRIERS, MY BILLY GOAT ( MY SWEET PET) AND MY HENS THAT THEY STARTED FROM COLORED CHICKENS FROM THE FAIR. MY PARENTS WENT THROUGH SO MUCH! THEY STARTED ANOTHER LIFE HERE IN NYC AND THEN AFTER 3 YEARS OF HARD WORK MY DAD AT 59 DIED OF LUNG CANCER. WHEN WE ARRIVED FROM CUBA MY DAD WAS 54 AND MOTHER WAS 46 WORKED AT BERGDORF GOODMAN DEPARTMENT STORE ON 5TH AVE IN THE GIFT DEPT. IN CUBA OUR DOGS ATE GROUND BEEF, WHITE RICE, FRIED BANANAS, AND SOME OTHER SMALL AMOUNT OF A ROOT LIKE MALANGA. THEY ALSO ATE ALL THE RAW EGGS THEY COULD FIND FROM THE HENS. WE NEVER EVER HAD A SICK DOG OR ONE THAT DIED FROM BAD STUFF. MY MOM HAD STANDARD POODLE AND A BLACK COCKER SPANIEL, THEY DIED OF OLD AGE. I WILL NEVER AGAIN GIVE ANY DOG BOUGHT FOOD OR KIBBLE OR CANNED FOOD. MY VERY OLD CHIHUAHUA SPRINKLES EATS CHICKEN THIGHS I BAKE OR SOMETIMES I MAKE LIKE A STEW ADDING CARROTS, SWEET POTATOES & REGULAR POTATOES. I DON'T KNOW HOW OLD HE IS HE IS GETTING SENILE & ALSO SOMETIMES HE COUGHS UP & THROWS UP SOME. I WILL MAKE HIM THE HONEY & BUTTER BECAUSE HE DOES NOT WANT TO EAT UNTIL VERY LATE IN THE PM. OH I FORGOT, I MAKE HIM A GROUND BEEF PATTY SOMETIMES. NO DOG FOOD EVER AGAIN!
FYI, tumeric is best with curcumin (most effective for cancer fighting). BUT turmeric isn't activated unless you add black pepper (which IS safe for dogs)
Wow, I’m so happy seeing everyone’s comments ! I had no idea so many people made their dogs food. I’ve been doing it 20 plus years, I used to try and get people to try it for their dog but they looked at me like I was nuts. I make a batch for the week, only takes an hour to debone the cooked chix with sweet potatoes and kale. I crush egg shells in a grinder and add other vitamins/coconut oil.
@@Daughter_of_the_King316 sure, I use one vitamin E 400 IU n one fish oil 1000 mg with a powder dog multi vitamin, once a day, I also give her a small can of sardines or fish once a day also. My dog weighs 75 lbs, do your research and see what works for your pet but whatever you do it’s always going to be better than that poison they sell in a bag or can.
I also cook for my dogs but have only gotten really serious about it the last couple of years! I make something different every week. After 20 years have you noticed a difference in the health of your dogs/ how long they live? My boy looks great and is healthy but fascinating how many vets disagree with cooking food! (Not my current one thankfully)
@@reginaray8874 I’ll tell you that I’ve noticed that my dog’s breath doesn’t stink like my son’s dogs who only eat dry food . Her coat is better too. As far as longevity, I feel no matter how long or short their life was/is or will be , feeding real food is keeping her healthier and happier and if a vet doesn’t agree with your feeding practices, too bad for them, it’s about money for them first, if a vet was putting an animal’s health first, getting repeated vaccinations yearly would never happen. That also causes disease within the animals body. Did you know they get the same amount to a St. Bernard as they do a small dog when it comes to rabies and vaccination shots ! I used to see a homeopathic vet , she moved out of state, when my dog got the rabies shot it would make her aggressive for a few days after, I told her about it and she found a rabies vaccine that had no additives or something else I can’t remember, when she used that one 3 years later my dog had no reaction to it at all, she lived into her 15 th year so she had at least 4 of those rabies shots with no side affects after. These conventional vets of today are trained just like the drs of us are, push pills to keep you coming back, never getting off that wheel of a level of sick that won’t kill you , but keep you so unbalanced you just keep going back to try and fix a problem they created, all in the name of Money . Unfortunately it’s that simple but people can’t/won’t see it. Make your food your medicine and your medicine your food, holds true for animals and people. We need to do our own research and feel what’s right for our situations.
I talked with my vet about making home made dog food and said I used brown rice. He stated that it might be better to use white rice as the "husk" of brown rice might be a little more difficult for a dog's stomach/intestines to process that part of the rice kernel. I tend to use the long grain white rice but I also use lentils and sometimes rolled oats in the dog foot I made. I also "change up" the items I put in it like chopped up apples, blueberries, kale, and a small amount of corn. Yes to green beans, peas, carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, for sure, but I think dogs like a bit of a change up once in awhile too. I've added salmon oil to the finished food in small "squirts" as well as bone broth (both chicken and beef). I've also used the "day old" meats at the grocery store that are marked down - veal, porkloin, chicken breasts and even roasts. Again, change up is good to keep them interested. I have a small, 10 pound dog, so when I cook it in the Instapot, it's a one and done deal. I'm making a pot of stew that I taste and if it tastes good to ME, then I know it's good for her! Last, I have a vacuum sealer and I scoop in a cup in each open bag, seal them, freeze most of them and leave out four for the next two days so all I have to do is grab two more (one in the morning, one in the afternoon) and she's happy and healthy - her poops are great, too!
Great advice! But I very politely take issue with the rice advice. Vets have about as much nutrition education as our human doctors do...very little. Sure they mean well. Sincerely. Variety is a great nugget of experience. Really appreciate the suggestions to change it up! Interested if you or anyone else has used quinoa...?
I agree about the brown rice. I buy 40 plus pounds at a time(6 lg. Dogs) and brown rice will go bad if kept over a long period of time. Not an issue at my house, but it's stuck in my memory bank.😂😂
I made this on my own after one of my daycare dogs came with the farmers dog. If you don’t have an instapot, cook everything in one pot on the stove, remove the main ingredients and cook the rice in the water …YUMMY!!!! It’s actually less work than using the instapot 🤫🤫
I was just saying Im going to make this in my stock pot. Then the only mess I'll have is my cutting board and knife. Basically, I can turn it on and let it simmer away. Then I thought, I'll use the kitchenaid to mix it all together lol
Did you cook all the meat, potatoes, carrots etc together all at once? And still for 25 minutes? I would love to try this recipe, but don’t have all the time shown in this video to cook each thing separately. Doing it all at once together would be so much easier. Even cooking the heavy items and adding the greens at the end would be easier.
@@terrihelman6486 I cooked everything together and it does take less than a half hour. I put everything in the food processor, but the sweet potatoes 🍠 they can be mashed with a fork. Quick and simple and my dog LOVES it ❤️

UPDATED - Been making my two Aussie's food for 3 years now - 100% trial and error. Both apparently have sensitive stomachs as they routinely regurgitated kibble. Did not run my mixture by any vet and, frankly don't care what people say who make their money from selling pet stuff. All I know is my dogs are healthy, happy, and finish their food in less than 2 min every time. I also discovered (trial and error) a blend that has completely eliminated their scratching (they were on Apoquel for it). For protein, I use boneless chicken breasts (shreds much easier but thighs are okay too, but messier and you are paying for the bones), raw or boiled eggs. Leaving the shells in occasionally provides a great source of calcium provided you puree the food. Research it. Egg shells are good calcium for humans too. I boil the chicken, let it cool then place in gallon bags. When I add to their food, I use about 1.5 cups in a medium-sized bowl, shredding it by hand. Remember, I'm combining in one bowl to feed two 45 lb dogs, so adjust accordingly. Vegetable matter is a combination of either 7 lbs sliced carrots OR 7 lbs sliced sweet potatoes combined with 2 Lbs of either green peas or green beans, all of which I boil then puree with an immersion blender. It is then stored in a gallon pitcher. HELPFUL HINT: When either the chicken or vegetables have boiled for 5-10 min, shut off the heat, leaving the pot where it is, then place a lid over it. After a few hours, it will be cooked to perfection with no boil-overs or scorching. I either save half a gallon of the broth from boiling the chicken which I dilute with water, storing it in a 1 gallon pitcher in the fridge OR (much more convenient) buy the store brand cartons of beef or chicken broth at Walmart. The store bought broth takes up much less space in the fridge I use about 1 cup raw oatmeal (non-instant). Raw is okay if you puree the finished mixture. Most animals aren't allergic to oatmeal. My dogs are fed twice daily. They share 50/50 from the following mixture: Start with the oatmeal in the bottom of the bowl followed by the raw or boiled eggs. Then, the chicken, plus 1.5 large serving spoons of the pureed vegetable matter. I purchase Omega 3 oil from Amazon in the 32 oz pump bottle, sourced from wild-caught North Atlantic sardines, and use 2 squirts. One bottle lasts me 3 months. I then add 1 to 1.5 cups of broth and puree that combination with an immersion blender. You can serve cold or warm in the microwave for about 2 min. I split the mixture between the two dogs. They get this twice/day. They lick their bowls clean then lick each other's bowl. Tons of energy and have thick, shiny coats with zero scratching and healthy stools. Non-scientific but it works for them. Vet says they are at ideal weight and look fantastic.
@@Caareenkm6726 Ideal? No. That was never my objective. Protein is, by far, the most expensive ingredient of any pet food. If I could afford to feed two adult Aussies on a diet of raw beef liver and red meat, I would. Most can't afford to do that. As a side note: liver is messy and smells bad. My objective was to come up with something healthier than kibble that they will eat, and I've done so. Most kibble alleges it is 18-30% protein by weight. What I make is 50% protein by weight. Farmer's Dog is 50% protein by weight. From their website: "...green (and orange) vegetables provide important health benefits to dogs. They can provide your dog with an array of key vitamins and minerals, including phytonutrients; AND, "Fresh legumes like chickpeas, and vegetables like sweet potatoes provide vitamins and minerals as well as additional fiber, a key component of a dog’s diet-it helps maintain digestive health and a healthy gut, helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and leaves your dog feeling full for longer. From the American Kennel Club: "Eggs are a great source of nutrition for your dog. They are high in protein, fatty acids, and vitamins that help support your dog inside and out"; AND, "This heart-healthy breakfast [oatmeal] is rich in soluble fiber, vitamins, and minerals such as iron, zinc, and B vitamins that help support your dog's coat and skin. The high fiber content helps promote digestion and weight management." I now add three squirts of Amino 3 fatty acid oil sourced from wild caught North Atlantic sardines. My dogs are healthy, vibrant, have beautiful coats, have no 'itch problems', zero gastrointestinal issues, and they lick their stainless bowls clean until they shine like a new penny each and every feeding. If you can afford the ideal diet, go for it. Most can't and if that is the only alternative left to pet owners, a lot of dogs will be UNNECESSARILY relegated to a lifetime diet of kibble.
First, just an FYI--sorry that your first order came in a broken box but that is do to the shipping company and not necessarily the Farmer's Dog. And secondly, thank you so much for providing recipes for homemade dog food. I have family that work in the pet food industry. They won't feed their dogs ANY of the commercial dog foods, not even ones that their company manufactures. Back in the day (prior to WWII) everyone made their own dog food because readymade dog food wasn't readily available. We're planning on adopting a large breed dog in the near future and because they are coming from a shelter/rescue, I want everything in this dog's life to be the best when he/she comes to live with us including their food.
Tippy toes smells you cooking her food!! I also cook my dogs food and they know it’s theirs and they always hang around the kitchen when I’m cooking it. They don’t when I’m cooking our food just theirs! So smart!!!
Yes. Same here. Mine will start offering behaviors we are working on in training because she knows I can't ignore them and it ends up up being a training session run by her. She pretty much offers what she wants to and gets rewarded for it. Love all these dog lovers in the comments.
For anyone wondering, the vet Dr. Jones on youtube suggests 1.5 - 2 cups of homemade food per 20 lbs of dog daily. My german shepherd is 70 lbs and I do 2 cups in the a.m. and 2 cups in the p.m. because that did seem like a large amount. This was based on the meal being 1/3 meat, 1/3 veggies, 1/3 brown rice
@@RotterStudios- What was written is they said that recommendation seemed way too much so they give their Shepard 2 cups in the morning & again in the evening. That’s 4 cups for a big dog. 🐶❤️
My sweet pup passed away in 2008 but before that I started making his food myself. There are just too many stories about poor quality dog foods and junky ingredients. My dog loved homemade and I felt so much better about knowing I was giving him healthy food. So glad to see that there are lots of recipes on the internet now (not so many back then) and that people are treating their dogs like the member of the family that they are.
I have 2 dogs. A 45# 6 month old Goldendoodle and a 12 year old 20lb terrier mix. I have been making their food for 4 months. It is a lot of work but worth it because they love it. I have a small instant pot that I use only to cook the rice and kidney beans at the same time. I generally use 2 Costco chickens beef or chicken liver and a couple pounds of whatever beef is on sale. The veggies, carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli, zucchini, greens pumpkin, flax seed all go in the blender. I use 2 large pots on my induction stovetop. Boil the carrots and sweet potato for about 10 minutes then add the rest of the veggies and let it simmer for another 10 minutes. I then add the cooked meat and chicken that has also gone through the blender. Constantly stirring throughout the process. I then bag it in ziplocks, about 2 lbs per bag. Freeze the bags flat. Thaw a bag every morning in water. Takes most of a day. Good thing I’m retired.
My Vet will never push the fact that you have to use dog food from the store make your OWN. I really learned abought dog food was when our beloved Molly went into kidney failure which came on suddenly. She was put on a kidney disease diet. So we did order canned dog food for her kidney disease and I looked at the ingredients and saw I have those ingredientswere actually on hand in my kitchen. Our Vet was sure by her lab work she at most was down to day,s. I came home and I started making her dog food and she ended up living for 4 month's. Happy our youngest dog of the 2 was so close to Molly. Here we have this huge Pit Bull who was a gentle giant and our rescue chihuahua and they were inseperable. So I never feed my dog's who are family bought dog food I make my own and they are healthy, well it is just Happy now and I make her food. So bless you for sharing this video to make other's aware.
I use this exact recipe to feed my dog who was vomitting regularly or would refuse to eat. She has not been sick once and she always helps make her food. The longer I do it the easier it gets because you are collecting as you go. She deserves it❤
When you started mixing is when I busted out laughing 😂 when you realized about the making the double portion. Hilarious 😅 and not because I was dissing on you. I love that you are honest and a regular person trying to do something awesome for your furbaby ❤❤ I thoroughly enjoyed your video 🥰 thank you 😊
I use a bus bin to mix it all, eliminating all the dirty bowls. If you put turmeric, adding a tiny bit of black pepper, allowing your dog to absorb it better. And adding lots of broccoli is beneficial as well. My dogs love it. Great video!!
Little-known fact...there is no such thing as an Instapot! It is an Instant Pot. The brand name is Instant Pot. I swear, it is true. Go look at your machine. It absolutely BLEW MY MIND.
I started making my own food a couple of decades years ago when my bull terrier was diagnosed with a protein allergy. I have 2 Sr small pups now and still make their own food. Once you begin making your pets own food, you can't stop. I have had my pups for 16 years and they are still going strong...just a lot slower. Thanks for sharing. Pets are family too. ❤
I'm so glad I read your comment. I just had to put down my little Maltese mix. My poodle Baby is now alone and not really excited about eating anymore. Just had her teeth done 2 months ago. She's 14 I feel bad I don't make enough money to take care of another dog. I am helping a cat now.
@@Sedgies My 3 pups now going on 14 raised on homemade food won't touch dry food no matter how expensive it is. I actually feel sorry for pets when I see owners buying gigantic bags of dry food - what a life.
Thanks for the recipe. Our vet is a nutritionist. He realises not everyone has even an hour or two free to make food nor has a big enough freezer to store a two week supply of home made pet food. He has two short cut dietary recipes he hands out with every visit, depending on the size/breed/health needs of the pet. One is a B.A.R.F. recipe for those who want to feed their pets that type of diet and the other is for those who prefer a traditional diet. The recipes' ingredients are similar to Farmer's Dog but is for two day servings. It works well for city apartment dwellers with small refrigerators and almost non-existent freezers. It takes about as much time to make one's own meal (while at the same time preparing a meal for a pet) or in the time it takes for a delivery guy to deliver an order of take out. Our pets are 10 and 15 years old, healthy w/no health problems. Many pet owners would prefer to make their own pet food but for a variety of reasons (mobility, health, financial, time, and/or space) cannot.
You could potentially portion it in ziplocs or large cupcake liners and freeze the mix, take it out the night before to thaw. This would not keep for 2 weeks fresh in the fridge, let alone 3 or 4. I like this guy! Very down to earth and natural, no pretense. Am going to try this for my Huskies
Love the idea of doing this and using the ziplock bags and put them in daily servings. I have used ground meat that way in the past for humans who want taco 🌮 Tuesday’s and they can heat it and eat it. They also store flat in the freezer as well.
I actually do this already for my husky (11 years old) though I use the Just Food for Dogs recipe which in my case is Turkey and macaroni. I do include a nutrient powder they sell that I add once everything has cooked and cooled along with fish oil (per cooking instructions). I keep 4 or so in the fridge and the rest i put in freezer zip locks and store in the freezer. I pull out 2 or so 2 nights before I plan to use them to give them plenty of time to thaw. its saved me money on both vet bills to keep a healthy husky and food. she's keeping up with puppies. her coat is radiant and stomach issues since I've switched to home prepped meals have completely gone way. good luck
@@reneekoonce6532 just food for dogs goes off weight. In my case it's 13.5 oz of food per feeding. They have charts on the website that break it down into further detail.
We make our own food using the Farmers Dog recipes as well. I have never seen our pups so excited to eat. My husband and I often joke that our pups eat healthier than we do.
I will tell you my husband made the mistake of thinking the homemade dog food was his lunch. He was telling me about it and I died laughing when I explained it was dog food. He said no wonder it taste like sh@t.
I also add beans (little cinnamon to avoid gas) and eggs for more protein. I use a food processor on the veggies and mix with the meat, then cook it like meatloaf in large glass trays. I make a month to 6 weeks worth and freeze. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
Yes . . . I've been making the 'meatloaf' form of dog food for years now. I cook a fresh veg asstmt in chkn broth - then cook some quinoa in the veggie/chkn broth . . . blend the cooled veg and quinoa and mix with ground chicken. Bake in loaf pans . . then when cooled and firm - slice into individual ziploc (snak size) bags and freeze. Each day I feed her the thawed one and put a frozen slice into the fridge to thaw for the next day. Before serving I add a crushed cosequin and salmon oil and top with a couple lil chunks of freeze-dried liver and a few drops of CDB oil
For my (almost) 17 year old dog this recipie works great. Here are changes I made for my senior doggy! I use half chicken and half turkey and add in 2-3 egg yolks. I add on top her meds and also some suplements. I add on minnows and salmon oil for omega 3, and I also top it off with some sea kelp, “Bernie’s perfect poop”, and local bee pollen. (For allergies) than I mix it all together with a few tablespoons of goats milk for rehydration. Every now and than I will throw on a treat and some frozen blueberries. ❤ this just makes the meal more balenced for my doggy!
As a retired chef, dog lover and frustrated pet food buyer it doesn't matter to me how much time it takes me in the kitchen to make wonderful meals for my beagle (Cooper). Between the recipe here and all the lovely advice in this comment section you have made both of our lives so much better in the food department -- for Cooper that's the only department that matters. Thank you all so much. Apparently I have to finally break down and buy an Instapot if for nothing else but its size. Next you're going to make me buy an airfryer (which is a glorified toaster oven btw).😉
Okay but my air fryer and instant pot are my most used appliances. We hardly use the oven anymore unless baking or bulk meals. I used tot hink the airfryer was just a toaster oven but the results are so much better in my air fryer than my old toaster oven. And my instant pot is amazing, it's a pressure cooker that you can also use as a crock pot or a stove top. I love making birria and chicken adobo in it!
@@crystalyensko2645I have a feeling traditional kitchens are going to disappear in the next few decades anyway. We don't need kitchens the way we used to at all; if I lived alone I'd probably only need a gas burner and a toaster oven/air fryer. However my 75y/o mom feels she can't live without a lot of the old things.
i personally don’t use my air fryer (was gifted to us) due to the limited counter space, and I prefer my crockpot over the instapot -there’s some crockpots you can get that can so multiple things without taking stuff out like that one i have (gifted to us) sautées, yogurts, stews, etc. i love being able to sear my meats and add everything else in after in one pot that I can put in the dishwasher
I'm devastated to report that my beautiful boy has just been diagnosed with lymphoma. On prednisone he's been given another month. It came out of nowhere; last week he was fine. His bloodwork was perfect. In lieu of the appliances I will be giving him his favorite -- roast chicken -- whenever I can get him to eat. Hold your loved ones tight everyone.
I made my own dog food for 17 years and wanted to share with you my joy at your video! I will use your recipe if I get another one. FYI- White rice is better for dogs because they have a short intestinal track and bad for humans.Brown rice is better for long intestinal tracts.
According to Dr. Gundry, brown rice isn’t better for people either because the toxic lectins are in the brown outer part. It also is more likely to hold on to the herbicides and pesticides. Brown rice tested high for a poison (can’t remember at the moment what it is🙄)
I dehydrate chicken breast as dog treats. My little one will not eat any other treat no matter how expensive or "high quality" it is. I do cut the chicken into strips.
That’s wonderful that you are making food for Sable. I used to cook my Lab’s food and then switched to raw. She’s a chocolate, too. It was so much faster and no cooking. You are so right that this is better for them. Since my girl started raw food she is no longer on expensive and potentially harmful allergy medications from the vet. Her allergies are 95% reduced. Her fur has filled in where she scratched it off, is shiny, and the inflammation is gone. Kudos to you for making Sable’s food and sharing your recipe and method with others. Sable is beautiful! I use ground turkey, organ meat, spinach, broccoli, and red peppers. As well as eggs, crushed egg shells, ginger, kelp powder, and stinging nettle leaf. If you can, pick two organ meats like liver, spleen, testes, tripe, etc. Don’t use heart, tongue or any muscle organ meat. They don’t count as organ. Also, I add Carlson’s Cod Liver oil and some Hemp Seed oil. My vet does not approve. Why? She is so healthy now. She is up to her optimum weight. She rarely gets ear infections and is such a healthier looking dog. The inflammation on her face and around her eyes is gone. I was always going in for ear medications for her, along with ear swabs. Again, why? I heard it myself from a vet, because allergies are great money maker for them. My job is to keep my dog happy and healthy. Healthy food is expensive, but so are appts, tests, and potentially harmful medications like Apoquel and Cytopoint. Best wishes to you and Sable. She’s one lucky girl! 🐕
💖 ~ My college biology professor gave my class 4 important food diet tips: 1. Eat flax seeds. 2. Only eat organic bananas🍌 cuz US chem co. sells illegal to use here DDT to countries that grow bananas = many DDT sprayings during growing season, then more DDT sprayings (WET!!! Saw hidden undercover cam video in class), then more DDT sprayings (WET!!!) ON the dock just before forklift loading branches of bananas onto a ship to bring 'em to us in the USA ... . He said IF you don't buy organic, then wash bananas well-carefully peel without touching fruit-wash hands well with soap & water-eat fruit-wash hands with soap & water well. Prof said those heavy & repeated doses of DDT will permeate to your skin & into your pores just from touching banana skins. He said DDT helps kill tarantulas ... . 3. Never eat pork & don't feed it to your pets = parasites + ALL of the toxic chemicals the pigs eat & drink that's in their food & that their injected with B4 killed = is NEVER excreted via pigs' pores cuz pigs don't have sweat glands to E-VON sweat + prof said bacon is WORST part of pig to eat cuz bacon is mostly fat & all of the toxic chemicals in the entire lifetime of the pig is BIOACCUMULATED IN THE PIG MEAT & SEVERELY CONCENTRATED IN THE PIG'S FAT!!! 4. NEVER EAT, NOR FEED PETS LIVER!!! Prof said the LIVER of humans & animals is the organ that BIOACCUMULATES ALL OF THE TOXIC CHEMICALS ingested, breathed, touched, soil & air & living environment pollution chemicals, & medicines/injections subjected to = LIVER = TOXIC TO EAT. READ FOOD & TREAT INGREDIENTS & AVOID, like the plague it is - CARCINOGENIC = CAUSES CANCER +++++++!!!!!!! 5. 🎯 When I told my puppy's vet in 1994 that I'd like advise on how to make healthy treats for him, he recommended a book that he was raising his own two Old English Shepherds on & that it also had recipes in it. 6. 💝 💔 My adorable Lucky, a 4-week-old Humane Society abandoned puppykins, was a mix of Old English, plus Bearded Collie & Irish Wolfhound & lived for 16 years AFTER being poisoned severely by my alcoholic neighbor's toxic & (he stole it from his job) illegal-to-use-in-my-state weed killer that the wind blew onto my yard & organic garden - killed everthing & gave my dog seizures + blood-red eyes & inner ears + partly blinded him; & made me sick & elevated my liver enzymes ... cuz the chemicals concentrated in my liver ... .) ⭐ 7. Vet wanted to euthanize my Lucky. NO WAY!!! I successfully nursed my flips-in-mid-air-Frisby catcher/squeekie-teasing scamp back to health using recipes in "Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Health for Dogs and Cats" - the book my puppy's vet recommended on our 1st visit in 1994 was totally ear-marked & notes in margins & stars & blue-black-red ink pens used to underline & yellow-pink-blue-green highlighters used & bookmarkers galore ... after 10 years of daily use, that book's binding was totally destroyed ... I carefully used that disheveled book for six more years, until my "angel puppy Lucky Wucky" died at age 16. Miss him.💔 😎 💘 8. Best days of my life were spent going on wooded hikes & metal hunting adventures & playing for six hours in the yard with all of his toys & going to lakes & rivers for swims. He protected me against assault from three different predatory men, & he saved his pet-sitter's baby's life. I saved him from a pit bull attack by draping my body over him in the middle of the street & hitting the loose pit bull with my key chain & screaming for help - took two tries for the owner to drag his mad dog to his kennel ... when we we safe, I relaxed my tented body from my Lucky - he sat up, turned around to look me in my eyes, then touched his lips to mine ... he actually gave me a "Thank You" kiss!!!💋 Lucky was the BEST dog I ever had.💯 👍✌🤙 💜 ✝️ 💜 👊 🇺🇸 ⚖ If you wish for peace, prepare for war. 💖
My brother always cooked for his dogs. He would do it for a couple of weeks for 2 dogs. They were always healthy. One passed away at 14 one is 15 and still going. I fed my dog regular dog food all the years I had her and she wound up getting very sick very sick and I had to put her down in 2019 and she was in pain. I vowed if I ever had a dog again, I would be cooking for it.
I saw this video and started cooking for both our dogs, corgi/Australian shepherd mix and a white Pom. Thank you so much. Our mix has never been too crazy about eating. He could take or leave it and is 13 yrs old. Had him since 10weeks. I switched your recipe with cauli, broc, and carrots frozen and riced cauliflower instead of rice. I also have added some black beans every other batch. All the kibble is still sitting in our pantry. I cook every 12 days. Will never go back to kibble
Thank you so much for this recipe! I have a puppy and absolutely hate feeding him processed dog food, I’ve bought him the most expensive dry dog food at Petco and still worry about all the unhealthy additives, preservatives and God only knows what else is in it. I will definitely be going to the store today and picking up everything to make this homemade dog food❤️ One thing I saw that could make you job easier when mixing it together is a paint mixer for a 5 gallon bucket, they sell them on Amazon for less that $10
It’s so great to see so many people are taking the diet/health/nutrition of their animal friends seriously. Pets are a part of your family and deserve wholesome food that will hopefully ensure they’ll be around for many many years 🐶❤️🐈
I never heard of people making their own dog food before I got a dog a few months ago. He had itching and dandruff, and I knew I did NOT want him on drugs to clear the symptoms and not the problem. So I started querying about quality kibbles and switched his food for better grades several times... Then UA-cam videos on the topic started popping up. One thing led to another, and I got educated fast on nutrition for dogs. Mine has been completely off kibble for several weeks, now. The sad thing is so many veterinarians push kibble and never educate the public on the benefits of human grade foods prepared at home. We believed their advice because it's all we knew. Now with social media and access to internet on our phones, info is just a click away. I feel for those who never adjusted or accepted technology, and feed their fur babies garbage like "Old Roy". They just don't know any better because they have not been exposed to the truth about kibble.😢
You need to add some berries for antioxidants. We also add Collagen, coconut oil, sardines, 10 lbs of ground beef and our eggs. We have two small dogs and our batch will last for 7 weeks, sweet. Love our Instant Pot.
First thing in the morning I gave my puppy coconut oil (I placed it in the ziplock bag, make it flat and keep in the fridge so it is easy to break a peace) like sizes of two peas. It is good for teeth (pull out), for hear and for digestion.
To cut costs, I buy a whole chicken, boil it until fully cooked, let it cool a bit and pull all the meat off. I check it with my hands to make sure all the bones are gone. Also add a package of sliced beef. I also slice up canned beets, green beans, canned carrots, frozen broccoli and spinach, add turmeric and some ginger, brown rice, mix it together and put it into Rubbermaid bowls of equal size I get at the Dollar store. Also, just before feeding, add some nutritional yeast. It's nutritious for them. Another viewer also said skip the peas. They are right. Peas have been controversial in dog food, and not in a good way.
another idea to save room in your freezer might be to put it in gallon ziplock bags laid flat to freeze so they stack up smaller. definitely going to make this (in a much smaller batch for my 12 lb yorkie), i've been thinking for a while about making his dog food myself and this video made the decision for me 🫶🏻
I am not positive, and correct me if I am wrong...but I do not think it takes 25 minutes to cook the vegetables in the IP. I think even the sweet potatoes and carrots would cook very throughly in around ten minute in the IP. That will really cut down on the prep time. I really appreciate this informative video!!! Looks wonderful. What a blessed pup.
Thank you for this video. We rescued a pup and she was very underweight. She loves the farmers dog but it is too expensive for me, but I want the best for her. Thanks to you my sweet pup will eat healthy without breaking the bank❤
Thoroughly entertaining. Had me laughing out loud when you realize there's too much food for the size of the bowls. This was a labor of love and your dog is lucky to have you as her human. I'm going to make this food for my boy.
I have been making my dog food for 2 yrs now. I now use 2 large crock pots and I just dump and go, 6 hrs later it's all done. I add multivitamins , calcium powder and coconut oil. My dog gets a pro/ pre biotic and joint and hip supplement daily. Best thing I did for my fur family
Hi can you please tell me what supplements you use for the other nutrients that a dog needs when making homemade food for the prepared food to be “Complete and Balanced”….can you tell us what Brand you use? Ty
I have read you can save egg shells and crush them and add to the food. But I prefer the eggshell powder since I can not grind the shells fine enough .
Love this recipe…. Here’s my recipe for my 45 lb cattle dog . Add to instant pot 2 cups water, 1 cup brown rice 1 lb ground turkey , 1 sweet potato in chunks and or 3 carrots 1/4 bag frozen broccoli. Cook on rice setting 12 minutes ( low pressure cook ) You can add whatever veggies your dog likes. This lasts about one week , I do 1/2cup of this and 1/2 cup Dr Marty freeze dried raw 2x daily. I also add 1 tsp salmon oil for joint support. Thanks for sharing.
I just started making my dogs food. He gobbles it up! It takes about 1 1/2 hours to make. I make it into a meatloaf or turkey loaf and bake it for about 1 1/2 hours at a low temp. I mix it in the pan I bake it in. Less mess. I use ground beef or ground turkey. A variety of different veggies. Some beef, chicken or vegetable broth. Brown rice or rolled oats. And sometimes a couple of eggs. 🦮
Thanks for sharing your recipe. I’ve been making homemade food for over a year and our dogs love it. I used a recipe I found on the internet (2.5 lbs. chicken (breast or thigh), 2 cups of chicken broth, 3 scramble hard eggs, 2 cup cooked rice (brown is better but white is OK), 1 lb. cooked broccoli, 1 large sweet potato, 2 medium apples with skin, and ¾ cup of dry parsley. At feeding time, I give them ¼ cup of the food with 1 teaspoon of pumpkin with a little dog supplement (3 times a day). The chicken, chicken broth and the sweet potatoes go into the Instapot for 3 minutes, so the chicken is not over cooked. I then use a food processor for the chicken, sweet potatoes, eggs, apples and broccoli. I then use a large plastic tub for mixing as the different items get cooked. I also do double batch so it will last about two weeks. Because I use an Instapot, rice cooker, food processor, skillet and a mixing tub, my kitchen is also a war zone.
@FridaysCreek Even better, make your own. I save all the bones from the meat I cook for myself and freeze the bones until I have enough to make broth. If I have leftover veggies that need to be used up, I may throw those in the pot. Never salt, onion, or garlic, though. I found an organic meat source online and plan to order chicken feet to make broth, too. Chicken feet are full of collagen which is really good for dogs... and for humans. 😊
Homemade food for dog is the best in my opinion, every morning my lab will run to the fridge and wait for me to grab her food, she always excited to eat and she become much more active and no more paw licking but yes, it is time consuming to make enough food to last a week or two for sure. Thank you for sharing your way of making it in Instant Pot ^^
I use a huge stainless steel bowl to mix in. We buy chicken quarters, or whole turkeys, or whole chickens, or ground. We’ve even used canned chicken in a pinch. Also, use your hands when your bowl s over full. You have better control.
I was thinking why not buy a professional restaurant pot from restaurant depot. Then it will be food-grade metal. And, if would probably hold all the ingredients to cook it in one pot, and could still use a drill to mix in the metal pot.
Just a quick note to say Thank You! I started making this about a month ago for my 9 year old bull mastiff. Since then, he has become more active, it looks like he’s lost weight, his coat is soft & shiny, and he eats the whole bowl of food as soon as I set it down. Prior to making this food we were feeding him Fresh Pet, which cost us between $60-$75/week and he wasn’t always thrilled to get it. In addition to the positive changes in his health & appearance, we are saving approximately $25-$30/week making it myself.
@JackieCooper35 aww my Bull mastiff will be 9 in November, he’s dealt with some pretty bad allergies, good to hear your pup is doing well on this diet, I’m excited to try it for my big guy!
@@laurafinigan7076 I make my own dog food and feed 50:50 meat mix and veggie/rice mix. She's doing very well with it. I use ground beef, liver and heart cand hicken gizards for the meat mix, sprinkle egg shell powder, nutritional yeast and ground flax meal on it.
My great-grandmother and grandmother lived through 2 World Wars and of course the Great Depression in between. They had a "waste-nothing" mindset.❤🙂 The only observation I would make, is save your broths and renderings in freezer bags or ice cube trays. They can be used to fortify more recipes for man and beast😃🥕🥦🧄🫛🍖🍗🥩🥓🥚🍠🍯🍵 THANK YOU for this encouraging video.
Thank You So much !! I’ve been wanting to get Farmers Dog but my Boyfriend doesn’t want to spend the money 😳 so this I think he’ll go for !!! Thank you thank you !!!
Your wife’s disapproving face is gold, I know she’s thinking you better clean up this kitchen because I’m not doing it 🤣🤣 and amazing recipe ! This was a big help I am in the process of switching my 1 1/2 year old pup to a raw diet :)
I’ve been feeding my dog homemade food since I adopted her 8 years ago. She’s 14 with the energy of a puppy 😂😂 and her treats are all fruits that are safe for dogs
I used to make my own dog food and supplemented it with dry kibble in case there was something I missed. I used to source whatever I could get from a local abattoir which would be beef heart, bones or offal. In addition I used whatever vegetables was in season and first cooked the bones to make a broth and then added the broth into a stew containing vegetables and other meat sources. You can also cook chicken feet in either the instapot or a slow-cooker and strain that broth that can be frozen and added to the dog food later.
Great recipe. I buy the beef liver, chicken hearts for my 14 year old chihuahua and combine it the same way. I like your meal prep r of making 2 weeks worth. I’ve done like 4 days but your method would save me a lot of time.
Go to the supermarket, and ask for some empty plastic buckets.. they get them with frosting etc. and they have two sizes. They're food safe, lightweight, and more manageable than a 5-gal. bucket would be; not as deep and narrow, for one thing, and easier to wash. Plus free. And environmentally friendly because they're re-purposed. I use a few for patio gardening; they're big enough for tomatoes and such.
So happy to see people really make an effort to keep their pet(s) healthy and happy. I've been making a 'meatloaf' form of dog food for years now. I cook a fresh veg assortment in chkn broth - then cook some quinoa in the veggie/chkn broth . . . blend the cooled veg and quinoa and mix with ground chicken. Bake in loaf pans . . then when cooled and firm - slice into individual ziploc (snak-size) bags and freeze. Each day I feed her a thawed one and put a frozen slice into the fridge to thaw for the next day. Before serving I add a crushed cosequin and salmon oil capsule and top with a couple lil chunks of freeze-dried liver and a few drops of CBD oil
Use your turkey broth instead of water when you’re cooking vegetables and rice You could also add the peas in the spinach to the extremely hot potatoes and carrots, and mix them in hot and they would be cooked down sufficiently keeping a little bit more nutritional value.
This is so much better than kibble! God bless you for the love you put into feeding your most loyal friend. Just one suggestion.....get a huge bowl from a restaurant supply place instead of the aluminum....it leaches into the food and is unhealthy for us and our pets.
I’ve been cooking home dog food too and it’s a great bonding experience. It feels nice to cook for my beloved roscoe, Like I used to cook for my son who’s out of the house now. ❤❤😊😊
I started cooking for my dogs about a year ago and it was the best thing I could do for them and they love it! I do 60% pork/chicken, 30% fruits/veggies 10%eggs/sardines and throw some liver in on top of that. We were about to put down my old dog when we started and he was thriving within days and plays now like he did as a pup. He could barely make it up the stairs when we started. It’s also cheaper than the kibble I fed him as long as I buy from the bulk food stores
Hi that’s great your dog improved. 🐾 I too got chicken thighs and pork chops ground beef. All the others veggies and ingredients I have. I know blueberries are good, cranberries too. What fruit did you add? Thank you
I also add some blueberries and apples/applesauce and they don’t seem to mind those. For a treat in the summer, I froze plain yogurt with blueberries and they enjoy that as well. Have a great day!
Great video. Always check the sodium content even in frozen. Definately in canned. I was shocked, but sometimes pleasantly surprised some are low sodium but they add sodium to everything. Always check the labels. Rotisserie chickens too! -John's wife
Thank you for sharing this. I lost 2 dogs that were like my children and one was 9 years and one just a year old only 47 days apart from renal failure which the vet thinks it was from the dog food we were feeding them. He has been seeing it a lot. So I have been doing a lot of research on quality food I can make at home for when I get another fur baby. But I have to say the best part of this WHOLE video was the little part where your wife was standing there giving you "THE LOOK". 😂😂😂😂
Thank you Buck for this post. We rescue many animals every year and have nine of our own dogs, so our pet food bill is beyond crazy. I too was frustrated with the pet food industry and the poor nutrition. Dogs shouldn't eat processed food daily, just a hard stop. Your recipe is wonderful. I add a little less turmeric, and I add a dozen eggs with the shells. You have nailed this, good for you and Sable. Sable is beautiful.
Dogs are like people in that they do not absorb the turmeric properly without black pepper... A tablespoon of black pepper to half a cup of turmeric is the typical measurements... You may want to just mix those together and then sprinkle them on the food when you feed, that way you know she's getting the right amount of both at every feeding. All the dog food companies Tell us how wonderful turmeric is- they just forget to add that you also need the black pepper. I don't know why- it just is what it is. ❤
I've been cooking for my dog since I got him .. he turned his nose up to all dog foods even Blue Buffalo... So I had no choice but to cook for him .. my Sambuca isn't spoiled I believe he has a sensitive tummy, my old man doggy Mongo, passed away two years ago. I almost didn't didn't want to get another dog. but I'm glad I did Mongo was a Sharpie and we had him 17 years. Medium size baby .. now I have a a Chihuahua, big difference, but he is only two and I think being more careful feeding him is only going to be better for him.. thanks for the recipe. With my Sambuca I will try it. Since I've been using chop meat for a batch and butter steak for a different batch it will give him a little variety... Oh and he gets breakfast sausage and eggs during the day but only a couple of table spoons full he's little... Or some times I cook him up some Walmart hamburgers and just keep a few cooked for in-between batches... If I had to cook for Mongo to he was a big eater so grateful he did like the Blue Buffalo bison.. LOL😂😂😂😂
I make a similar recipe for my dogs. I toss in the sweet potatoes in first , then the carrots, the peas on top, then in goes the pumpkin and spinach, on top of the spinach goes the rice, chicken stock, chicken liver and 5 lbs of turkey. I cook in the instant pot for 30 mins and let it release pressure naturally. Once cooking is done I break up the cooked turkey mixing the ingredients as I go, then I put in a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil into the food and mix well. This serving will give me around a weeks worth of food. The peas and chicken stock are salt free and the vegetables are all fresh nothing frozen. I like to freeze my spinach to be able to crumble it up to make space in the pot.
@@brittanyponce965 2 med sweet potatoes cut up into cubes, half a can of unsalted peas, 4 small to medium or 2 large carrots sliced, 7.5 oz of baby spinach, 7.5oz pumpkin puree (make sure it's not pumpkin pie puree)
I have been feeding my dog this recipe for almost a year. He is so much healthier. Ps. I cook him his in 5lb and the veggies. At each time. But I also found that a low pressure and less time is even better. Not needed to cook as long as you are. And it’s quicker and just as fully cooked. He loves it. He’s a lab. And only ways 2 cups a day. But he’s not super active and 9 years old. Best poop ever as well. Thanks for sharing with those who don’t know the best thing to feed your animal.
I cook a whole chicken (removing most of the skin) in the crock pot; debone it, then cook the bones & grind them up in a food processor. I use this liquid for cooking the vegetables, etc. I use oatmeal or barley instead of rice. Main ingredient should be meat. I vary the vegetables & fruit weekly. Black pepper with the turmeric.
I am so happy you’re cooking for your sweet dog ❤️🐶 One suggestion if I may, please add more organ meats, gizzards, beef heart, kidneys, if you can find. It’s very good for them. Also, Four Leaf Rover has good natural vitamins you can add to the food when you’re serving, not to the whole batch. Thanks for caring!!
@@SwtTrisha8 one of the recipes I make for my Luka and the foster dogs is this: 2 eggs 1 tsp of raw organic honey or organic unfiltered coconut oil ( both have antibacterial properties) 1/2 cup canned organic pumpkin ( not pumpkin filling just pumpkin) 1 tbsp of organic peanut butter Pinch of salt 1 1/2 cups of ground oats I drop the dough with a spoon to baking sheet and Bake @ 350 for about 20 minutes for soft treats. You can bake a bit longer for harder cookies. You can also add more oat flour, roll it out cut it with dog bone shaped cookie cutter, if you wanna get fancy 😀
Thank you for the Four Leaf Rover advice! I have been looking for what to add to my Peanut’s home cooked food to make it nutritionally complete. I just ordered exactly what he needed from their site! 🙏🏻😊🐾💖
The fact that you were willing and able to accomplish this task far supersedes any mess you have made. Tell mama to be happy she didn't have to do it and to give you some love. Some men wouldn't have gotten off of the couch unless it was on fire. Peace be with you Brother and Great job!!
My dad makes homemade food for his little dogs and my sister’s Chihuahua who had hair loss for years, is now growing beautiful shiny hair in patches. The recipe he makes is : cooked chicken breast or tenders/ thighs boiled in water. Cooked carrots, sweet potatoes and green beans in water. White rice (easier on the dogs kidneys than brown rice). You can also add fried egg whites to the mixture. He freezes 1 cup containers and the little dogs have food for a few weeks. The dogs are healthy, happy, energetic and have beautiful hair.
From a vet tech, trainer and dog nutrition fanatic of 15yrs, I would remove the peas as legumes can bind taurine. Add in some fish, such as canned salmon or sardines or at least fish oil for the healthy omega 3s. I would also try to vary what kinds of organ meat you use. With the pumpkin, liver, carrots and sweet potatoes this recipe is also quite high in vitamin A, so do watch out for that. Adding eggs, a calcium supplement and homemade bone broth full of collagen would take this recipe to the next level!
wow thank for the information and advice - I do give her eggs on occasion and grind up the shells for calcium (I have a video for the egg shells) I also started adding sunflower oil to her diet as well - but thanks again for the solid suggestions.
I make a similar recipe for my dog, only I use our left-over bones that I save in the freezer to make bone broth (pressure cook the bones for 3 hours and natural release) to cook the rice & veggies in. Usually the instant pot makes the bones soft enough that I can break them with my fingers...so she gets the bones & marrow also...any bones that I can't break with my fingers I don't give her as they might splinter and that wouldn't be good. I also allow my dog to help clean the dishes on food making day so my clean up goes much faster...I just don't give her as much of her food on that day.

I agree. How much are your vet bills going to be if they are sick? Also, it is terrible to watch them when they suffer
I started doing this since I had past dogs die from cancer, plus look at all the dog food recalls that happen.
Avoid using aluminum pans. Get a large stainless steel bowl. Also using a paint mixer in a plastic bucket could introduce plastic shavings into the dog food.
You don’t have to have a dog to know that
I fed my dog a homemade recipe of ground turkey, liver, spinach, carrots, blueberries and sweet potatoes. I added 5 Defenders Mushroom powder in her later years. She was generally healthy and lived to 17.5 and when it was time for her to leave us it was very peaceful and due purely to old age.

A word of advice on using your Instant Pot.... Do not drop your ingredients into the pot with inner pot inside the base. The base is sensitive and that little spring sensor could be damaged as a result. It's better to fill the inner pot while it's on your counter and then place it gently into to base.

This is SO helpful. Thanks for this comment!

Yes!
That’s a lot of unnecessary carbs to give to your dog.
Wow thanks for sharing!!!
@@Caareenkm6726in order to have a balanced diet carbs are necessary

Yes.
I have German shepherds. That's 8 lbs of food in one meal for a smaller Shepherd. WAY TOO MUCH!
@@RotterStudios My Saint is 175 pounds. I better get my cauldron ready. I do make her homemade food but just as a topping for quality kibble.
Amount per dog should be based on the calories not weight of food or dog.
@@RotterStudios- What was written is they said that recommendation seemed way too much so they give their Shepard 2 cups in the morning & again in the evening. That’s 4 cups for a big dog. 🐶❤️
Right but how do you figure the calories out for this recipe?@@kaylathompson75
How much rice?
The broccoli isn't gasy for your pooch? When my puppers have broccoli ohhhh my the neighborhood knows it lol😂
Yes, I've also read that black pepper helps the absorption of the tumeric.
And we add kale - they love it.
Little-known fact...there is no such thing as an Instapot! It is an Instant Pot. The brand name is Instant Pot. I swear, it is true. Go look at your machine. It absolutely BLEW MY MIND.
also a bit of coconut oil or quality olive oil over the food right before serving
I have a bull terrier, what would you recommend for daily quantities? And what was your recipe? Supplements? Thank you!
That’s what my vet said too. Once you start they won’t like dry food. They’re not dumb. Lol
I pull out 2 or so 2 nights before I plan to use them to give them plenty of time to thaw. its saved me money on both vet bills to keep a healthy husky and food. she's keeping up with puppies. her coat is radiant and stomach issues since I've switched to home prepped meals have completely gone way. good luck
How do you know what potion to feed fresh food? I’ve been feeding my girls kibble for ten years and want to change them over to fresh.
I’m also going to try this for my husky Ruby. Mostly I have used venison but other meats when not available.
@@reneekoonce6532 just food for dogs goes off weight. In my case it's 13.5 oz of food per feeding. They have charts on the website that break it down into further detail.

True , if I can’t eat it neither should my dog . We eat together almost every meal
I will tell you my husband made the mistake of thinking the homemade dog food was his lunch. He was telling me about it and I died laughing when I explained it was dog food. He said no wonder it taste like sh@t.
😂😂😂 true
I also add beans (little cinnamon to avoid gas) and eggs for more protein. I use a food processor on the veggies and mix with the meat, then cook it like meatloaf in large glass trays. I make a month to 6 weeks worth and freeze. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
Great tip!
careful with eggs - they feed pathogen (Book - Cleanse to Heal)
Yes . .
@@TomLloyd-18the addition of the CBD is genius. ❤

I think your taking great care of Saber. I found our cats (oldest almost 20) and the dog eat better with their dish raised off the floor.

Next you're going to make me buy an airfryer (which is a glorified toaster oven btw).😉
thank you very much - the insta pot is so worth it you will love it!

💖 ~ My college biology professor gave my class 4 important food diet tips:
6. 💝 💔 My adorable Lucky, a 4-week-old Humane Society abandoned puppykins, was a mix of Old English, plus Bearded Collie & Irish Wolfhound & lived for 16 years AFTER being poisoned severely by my alcoholic neighbor's toxic & (he stole it from his job) illegal-to-use-in-my-state weed killer that the wind blew onto my yard & organic garden - killed everthing & gave my dog seizures + blood-red eyes & inner ears + partly blinded him; & made me sick & elevated my liver enzymes ... cuz the chemicals concentrated in my liver ... .)
⭐ 7. Miss him.💔
😎 💘 8. Best days of my life were spent going on wooded hikes & metal hunting adventures & playing for six hours in the yard with all of his toys & going to lakes & rivers for swims. He protected me against assault from three different predatory men, & he saved his pet-sitter's baby's life. I saved him from a pit bull attack by draping my body over him in the middle of the street & hitting the loose pit bull with my key chain & screaming for help - took two tries for the owner to drag his mad dog to his kennel ... when we we safe, I relaxed my tented body from my Lucky - he sat up, turned around to look me in my eyes, then touched his lips to mine ... he actually gave me a "Thank You" kiss!!!💋 Lucky was the BEST dog I ever had.💯

Thanks for the tips!
First thing in the morning I gave my puppy coconut oil (I placed it in the ziplock bag, make it flat and keep in the fridge so it is easy to break a peace) like sizes of two peas. It is good for teeth (pull out), for hear and for digestion.
what is weight of your dogs. how much do you feed for one meal. or for a day? thank you.
Really? Tell me why please.
another idea to save room in your freezer might be to put it in gallon ziplock bags laid flat to freeze so they stack up smaller. definitely going to make this (in a much smaller batch for my 12 lb yorkie), i've been thinking for a while about making his dog food myself and this video made the decision for me 🫶🏻
I made this recipe tonight for my fur babies! They loved it. Even my girl that is almost 10 and is extremely picky!
fantastic! we are so happy to hear this
I am not positive, and correct me if I am wrong...but I do not think it takes 25 minutes to cook the vegetables in the IP. I think even the sweet potatoes and carrots would cook very throughly in around ten minute in the IP. That will really cut down on the prep time. I really appreciate this informative video!!! Looks wonderful. What a blessed pup.
Veggies don’t need 25.
5 minutes for me
Do you put as much vegetables as he did in your instapot?

I make a "dog loaf"... a meatloaf, with eggs and I'll use either rice or oatmeal to bind it. My dogs love it and their coat is super silky
Thoroughly entertaining. Had me laughing out loud when you realize there's too much food for the size of the bowls. This was a labor of love and your dog is lucky to have you as her human. I'm going to make this food for my boy.

Do you use low sodium broth?
Double check no onion or garlic in the chicken broth, no no's for dogs. Low sodium or salt free also best.
Lol, love this guy. And the 5-gal pail. drill stir, and hosing down the pail-great ideas!
Just as long as the buckets are food grade safe!

I hope you are fully aware of the KILL Gates Foundations A-peel! TOXIC AS HELL & doesn't wash off!
Which fruits
I used to make my own dog food and supplemented it with dry kibble in case there was something I missed. I used to source whatever I could get from a local abattoir which would be beef heart, bones or offal. In addition I used whatever vegetables was in season and first cooked the bones to make a broth and then added the broth into a stew containing vegetables and other meat sources. You can also cook chicken feet in either the instapot or a slow-cooker and strain that broth that can be frozen and added to the dog food later.
geat job thank you for suggestions
Cook the chicken feet in the instant pot long enough to soften the bones and give it to the dog bones and all.
I use a few for patio gardening; they're big enough for tomatoes and such.
great idea - I actually did pick up a food safe 5 gal bucket
Great idea!!
😂😂😂 The loud shatter of glass in the sink at 12:37 and him just casually going on. I’m Definitely gonna make this!
oh so sorry for your loss - yes my wife is funny she gives me the look all the time
Haha….I noticed that look, too. She’s standing there to make sure he cleans up his mess, I think! May I ask what brand of dog food you were using?
Thank you Buck for this post. We rescue many animals every year and have nine of our own dogs, so our pet food bill is beyond crazy. I too was frustrated with the pet food industry and the poor nutrition. Dogs shouldn't eat processed food daily, just a hard stop. Your recipe is wonderful. I add a little less turmeric, and I add a dozen eggs with the shells. You have nailed this, good for you and Sable. Sable is beautiful.
Do you add raw eggs?
@@darlenebrillinger4217you can
Dogs are like people in that they do not absorb the turmeric properly without black pepper...
LOL😂😂😂😂
Just lost my Seven 2 weeks ago, I can barely function. Everything makes me sad.....did getting a new pup help?
How much veggies and stuff are you using? I'd love the recipe.
Do you add water?
@shawnacyyager7402 yes, I add 2 cups of unsalted chicken broth
I am amazed to see a man spending this much time in the kitchen for the Love of his Dog!!! 🐕🦺
Way to go! 👍 ❤
Do you know of a good dog biscuit recipe?
@@SwtTrisha8 one of the recipes I make for my Luka and the foster dogs is this:
2 eggs
1 tsp of raw organic honey or organic unfiltered coconut oil ( both have antibacterial properties)
1/2 cup canned organic pumpkin ( not pumpkin filling just pumpkin)
1 tbsp of organic peanut butter
Pinch of salt
1 1/2 cups of ground oats
I drop the dough with a spoon to baking sheet and Bake @ 350 for about 20 minutes for soft treats. You can bake a bit longer for harder cookies.
You can also add more oat flour, roll it out cut it with dog bone shaped cookie cutter, if you wanna get fancy 😀

Thank you SO much- it sounds really good! Going to make some this week coming up!
I also allow my dog to help clean the dishes on food making day so my clean up goes much faster...I just don't give her as much of her food on that day.
great idea - yes Sable cleans the dishes nightly lol
