  • The Surface 604 V Rook is an approachable deep step-through electric bike that comes in two frame sizes and three colors! Includes aluminum alloy fenders, sturdy rear rack, integrated lights, and two battery size options for extended range. Relaxed handlebar, adjustable angle stem, high volume tires, ergonomic touch points, and adjustable suspension fork offer comfort. Unique combination of torque sensing pedal assist with trigger throttle that overrides for added power. Settings menu provides adjustable top speed, adjustable assist levels, and adjustable screen brightness. Two integrated USB charging ports (one on the display and one on the battery pack) let you maintain portable electronics on the go. Excellent stopping power thanks to Tektro Auriga hydraulic disc brakes with large 180mm rotors and motor inhibitors and brake blinking activation. Mid-level derailleur and nine-speed cassette provides plenty of options for urban riding. Excellent safety features including bright headlight with side windows that is mounted up high on the stem, and reflective tires. The battery charge port is low and near the left crank arm. No slap guard on the right chain stay, pedal assist can activate unexpectedly if the chain bounces excessively. The optional high capacity battery pack sticks out on the left side vs. being symmetrical. Fairly heavy build at 67.4lbs due in part to the front rack, which is removable.

    We are really happy owners of this bike! As I commented on a different EBR video, these bikes are slightly more expensive than many of the other common DTC brands, but I think you really get value for the added price. Extremely minimal proprietary components that should be easy to replace or repair for a long time, and no weird cutting of corners on things like brake quality (I say this specifically with our RadCity 5 in mind). Plus my interactions with their customer service have all been really fast and helpful. I always recommend this company for people looking for this type of bike!

      Great testimonial, Aman! Thanks for sharing what you've liked about the Surface 604 ebikes. I agree, it's a good combination of quality parts and design for a reasonable price. I hope yours continue to work great for many years :)

      Hi there. How is the bike so far? I'm thinking of buying a used Rook with 5000km.

      @@EmiyaDdarijima It's great, we love the bike! We are actually selling ours too because we upgraded to a Tern but we have nothing but love for the V-Rook we own. And the Bafang motor & Reention battery should mean it is fully serviceable for a long time.

    Great review! I've been researching ebikes for more than 6 months and I'm very much leaning toward this exact model.

    Thanks for another great review! Bought this bike with the 20 Ah battery and suspension seat post several months ago as my first ebike. Bottom line: No regrets!
    Tested 5 cadence-sensing ebikes beforehand. Bought this one on the spot after a 20-minute test. The very smooth, natural power delivery made all the difference. Value for price also figured in.
    Question: Does the torque sensor in the rear drop-out also sense cadence?
    Some sensors of this type do -- in which case the bike would actually be controlling motor power according to rider POWER input. Some ebikes do just that, and I'm wondering, based on comments from knowledgeable EBR forum members, if the V Rook is one of them?
    Finally, really appreciate the 9 assist level option. I like to contribute as much propulsion as I can, and this granularity helps me dial in just the right amount of help.

      Yeah, it looks pretty nice... and they put the extra effort into frame strength. The deep wave frames can flex sometimes, but this one did alright :)

    A friend asked me to look for a bike around 3k that’s a step through and a relaxed riding position. This one seems the best all around bang for the buck. 2800 with torque sensor and larger battery.

    Thank you for this review. Other than how it looks, how does this bike compare to the Surface 604 Colt? Thank you.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  Рік тому +1

      Happy to help. The Rook, Colt, and V Rook are all very similar (drive system, drive train, and other components). The main difference is the frame design. This one is less rigid than the other two, but has a lower stand over height. To me, it performed very similar, and I'd be happy with any of the three. It might come down to style or color for me personally. I'd probably go with the high step because I do like to ride off road and have a tall inseam and feel pretty comfortable and balanced on bicycles :)

    Still riding my 2017 Surface 604 Rook! Came with hydraulic brakes and torque sensor even back then. Fenders, rack, and integrated lights too! The best thing about this company is that I feel, for the money, you get the complete package - no nickel and dime-ing the add-ons. One question - do you get full throttle throughout all assist levels? My one complaint about my model is that the throttle only gives you power equivalent to your assist level, so to get full throttle you have to be at level 5. Thanks.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  Рік тому

      Thanks for the feedback! It sounds like you're very happy with your Rook. Yes, the review unit I rode did appear to have throttle override, so you could get maximum power and speed regardless of the assist level.

    • @JeremyMcCrearyTechnicalLEGO
      @JeremyMcCrearyTechnicalLEGO Рік тому

      The throttle on my 2023 V Rook delivers full power on all assist levels above 0. At 0, the motor's off, even for the throttle. (I have mixed feelings about this, but it's probably for the best.)

    At the beginning of your reviews can you please tell us what class each electric bike is? Because of access to trails issues, many of us are only interested in Class 1 bikes.

    I’m trying to decide between the Rook, the Eunorau Meta 275, the Denago Commute Model 1, Eunorau ETorque, or Electric Bike Co Model S. I’m looking to do light trail riding along with paved roads. Which one would you pick?

    It seems there is more general moving to the torque-sensors in general?

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  Рік тому +1

      I still think it's fairly rare, the cadence sensor with smooth controller acceleration seems to be popular. Just having a torque sensor (like the S604 V Rook) is nice in some ways, but requires the extra pedal pressure and can activate unexpectedly (though rare). Maybe there are other companies doing it that I'm less aware of because I've been a little slower on reviews lately. Getting ready to launch a bit website update soon :)

    Hey Court, I always enjoy your videos and your expertise when it comes to e bikes. What do you think about Nireeka e bikes? They have several different design options that almost seem more futuristic build. Just seeing if you are familiar and what you think? As always thanks for your feedback!

    What if I just wanna go full throttle

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  Рік тому

      I believe the standard top speed setting is 32km/h (20mph) with pedal assist and throttle. If you go into the settings and raise the maximum speed, I believe it can go to about 26mph realistically :)

    Why is this Bike is $2600 instead of $1.6000?how far can you go? On one charge.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  Рік тому +2

      I think it's extra because of the quality parts like the Samox bottom bracket, two frame sizes, three colors, good warranty, is sold through dealers, has nice lights, tires, suspension fork, and hydraulic disc brakes, and it has the battery and charger upgrade options. These things all add up.

    • @scoot82601
      @scoot82601 Рік тому

      Having had an e-bike store, you definitely get what you pay for. Battery replacements on any of the brands to match the 604's are around $800-1000, alone. Addding $500-800 more for an ebike won't give much quality. We had one line in the $16 range that would compare to these bikes. Positives are 30day trial, super battery and quality brakes, shifters, controller, electronics, posts, suspension, etc. Best bike for the money is Pedego, but starting around $2500-4000 depending on style and battery.
