An electric fat bike designed with off-road maneuverability and performance in mind, the Surface604 Boar Explorer is a more pared-down and trail-ready edition of the Canadian company’s all-terrain e-bike.
In this Surface604 Boar Explorer review, we put its performance to the test in a series of challenges designed to parse out how this e-bike performs in the real world.
The Boar Explorer is surprisingly lightweight for an electric fat bike at just 50 lbs and, at least at first glance, appears a little more spartan than some of its competitors in the sub-$3,000 fat tire e-bike category. But, what the Boar Explorer lacks in suspension and racks, it more than makes up for in a few key upgrades designed to keep it light, nimble and a high performer in off-road conditions. Those upgrades include a torque sensor, a 9-speed drivetrain and powerful brakes, among a few other things.
To our reviewers, these upgrades made for a noticeable improvement in how the bike felt when the pavement ended and the dirt began.

I have the boar hunter and I was worried about the lack of front suspension but haven’t missed it. Front end is light and very responsive. Ride quality is excellent and even at top speed the bike feels very smooth.

The torque sensor is a great way to go. I ride a 2700 watt Rigid frame Surly Pugsly with a Body Float seat post to compensate a bit for the rigid front end.

A couple of important things this review missed or glossed over. One is that he reported the mfr weight as 50 lbs with battery. Anybody who has been shopping for fat tire e-bikes would realize that 50 lbs is too good to be true. I have the S/M version of the Boar Hunter with only the rear rack and it weighs over 55 lbs WITHOUT the battery (the smaller battery is about 8 lbs, the larger 10 lbs). This bike is larger and has bigger wheels. Maybe put this on a scale to report the weight? It may still be one of the lighter fat e-bikes, but no way is it 50 lbs.
The second also relates to the size. The reviewer said that this bike is not overly long, but when you get on this bike you immediately think this is super slack as the front tire extends way out in front. However, it is not the head tube angle but the size of the wheels that creates this impression, as 27.5 inch wheels with 4.5 inch fat tires are huge. The height of a 26 inch wheel with 4.5 inch tires is about the same height as a 29er wheel and tire, so a 27.5 with 4.5 inch tires is more like a "31er", which also means the frame has to be bigger. I tried loading this on a Kuat rack and the swing arm did not fit over the front tire, something you would want to know before ordering. This is also one of the reasons that it does well without suspension, as it rolls over bumps more easily, but would be a liability on switchbacks or tight turns, as well as on bike racks.
I am really glad I did not rely solely on this review and went to a shop to try it out. I was planning to buy this bike but after some test rides and realizing I could not transport this beast, I opted for the 'smaller' Boar Hunter. Reviews should mention the good and the bad, we are all adults here.

Nice review. I think this is the bike for me. I prefer a rigid fork for the simplicity, lower weight, and better for standing climbing. One suggestion would be to include the total elevation gain as another metric of your range tests.

      Thanks, Doug!
I think that's a good suggestion. We'll look about implementing that to the charts we have on our written reviews 🤙

Cheep suspension fork washes out and total waste of time.
My recommendation is to lower the air pressure and upgrade to wide carbon bars with premium grips. As always great review!

Wish I could find a place to test ride. Love the simplicity and light weight but not sure power of the hub drive for steep hills and plowing through sand. Nine speed is nice but the big cog is only a 34 tooth and along with the 36 front sprocket, kinda iffy on low end pedal power and then the crank is only available in 170mm. For long legged folks, that's kind of small and also penalizes torque. Intrigued but think I'll keep looking.

    Like this!
I prefer full rigid frame sets to be honest.
The fact that the brand has an option for a better suspension fork is a good way to go than no option at all. Going that route can be a deal breaker in itself for people.

Shouldn't this have front shocks for off roading. Doesn't seem to make sense to me.

Remember people, stay ON established trails. Respect our public lands. Do Not ride willy-nilly across the terrain.

For trails? Cheap fork, 25lbs heavier, less range, cadence sensor, less aggressive geometry. Seems like +$1000 is worth it for off road

Please don’t talk with your hands. Very distracting. I’m autistic.
