The demo of WHERE you're applying pressure to unlock the assembly....PRICELESS. "Remove bezel, remove screws, remove fuel pump assembly. install is reverse of removal." Well NO SH!T! show me where I'm going to get stuck and so frustrated I'm gonna wanna set fire to the damn thing! GREAT VIDEO!
I wish I has seen THIS video before I gave up and let my local shop replace my fuel sender. I had the whole assembly half way out of the tank but but I just felt that I would end up breaking something. You did a really nice job with this video.
Nice instructional video. For those who are a little frugal - I always change all the hoses while in there and the main gasket because it's a crush gasket but I always reuse the screws and the little screw gaskets and it always seals. I've done it this way many, many times without a problem...2 cents.
Awesome video. About to do this in a couple weeks on my 07 Heritage. I’ll probably change my check valve while I’m at it. Both dealerships in my city wanted 700+ to do this. 👍🏻
@@jamalymall it would feel like it was starving for gas when it was under acceleration. Just didn’t rev smooth and would flatten out when giving it gas. It would pop and idle rough. Since then I replaced the fuel pump, regulator, regulator housing and the check valve. Also the filter. Both hoses that were on the pump and the valve. It runs like a new machine now. Power all the way up the tachometer. Smooth acceleration and no hesitation. Idle is smooth.
by far the best video that simplified the task. after watching several i finally got the job done on my heritage. My hats off to a fine instructor. no hesitation to subscribe.
You did a good job on the video. Very well explained. I’m going to do this job on my 2005 Fatboy sometime later this week and I really appreciate your attention to detail. Thank you. I subbed.

Great video and lesson. It helped me pull out the pump for a fresh paint job. One question:? The exhaust sounds great on your 03' ... can you let me know the pipes you use?
Great video! I found this while looking for tips on repairing my non-working fuel gauge. Noticed that your fuel gauge was already off in this video. My gauge almost always shows 3/4 full, regardless of tank level.......help?
I have found that heating the hose will help loosen it up to fit over its nipple that it is supposed to go on, so you can easily get it on the nipple far enough for the new clamps. I use hot water or a hot air gun. I would like to know why you didn't use a new o ring on the filter before sliding it back into the regulator? There inexpensive and will worth using not to have a leak and lose fuel pressure after it goes out of the pump. A regulator and only work correctly if it is getting all the fuel that it is supposed to have going to it. The wire is supposed to be Teflon coated wire when it is in fuel. If I was going to go to all the trouble of getting new screws to put the plate back down, I think I would go a head and get a new gasket as well, and do it all the way by the book.
Loved the video, could you do one on replacing the fuel send unit I'm in a jam cant seem to find any information on replacing the sending unit and wire diagram.
This was a superbly done video. Thanks for posting. I found you by looking for info on getting access to the inside of my bike’s tank- same one and year as yours. My purpose is to understand what access I have to push out a small dent on the left side of the tank and I’d like to do it from the inside. Once that console is off, I was hoping to insert a PDR tool inside. The dent is basically from dropping the bike and the turn signal slamming the tank. Any insight appreciated. Thx!
Donald Hardin thx, Donald. That’s quite a concept. Even if I could seal the three holes for the water stronger than the force required for the dent, that big old 5 gallon tank isn’t fitting in either of my freezers. lol
The material is similar to the wire insulation so I'm pretty sure it's good. Probably a good idea to check if the stuff you're using is. I've had no issues since the install.
@@mr_mcgrew Like your video. Could not get mine out of the tank till I saw your trick with the folding bracket. That is not covered very well in the factory serv. manual. As far as the insulation, the insulation in the tank's internal wiring is not the usual material, it is Teflon. If you anything else it Will slowly degrade over time and spark. Please make sure if you use shrink tube that it is PTFE type and if someone uses crimp tubes that they are PTFE insulated or bad Mojo will likely result. Thanks

I may have missed it, but why did the electrical connection from the old fuel pump assembly not fit the new fuel pump, which required you to cut if off and solder in a new connection?
My brother who's been a Harley Master Mechanic for longer than I can remember would disagree. Those screws stretch enough that torqueing them a second time can compromise them.
Great catch! And that would have been the best option. But I didn't get pin removal until a few months later. And I've destroyed too many molex connections in my life trying to disassemble them without a proper pin removal tool.
Michael McGrew I opted not to get a new one...I don’t see where it is needed. Think about it, mine broke down over time so when I pulled my fuel pump out it was sloppy in the zip ties so it was moving around...the same thing the sleeve is “designed “ to prevent. I call it another Harley fail for the simple reason I had to clean all that broken down shit out of my tank that didn’t make it into the fuel filter and the clogged pickup.
Michael McGrew You really need to check out Project Farm’s channel, he covered the fact that ethanol and their stabilizers do in fact degrade neoprene and rubber of any sort.
You can get liquid or paste. But you need the kind made for electronics. It cleans the wires and makes the best possible connection. You can make joints without it but they're more resistive and prone to failure.
I'm not sure of type. I have a bunch on hand. As for size, choose a size that fits as close as possible. Even if it seems a bit loose, most heat shrink will shrink to half its size so it shouldn't be difficult to find some that fits.

I would recommend the company I got my pump from as it's lasted just fine since I made the video a few years ago. As for other parts, I go to Ronnie's Harley website. Anything I can't find there I go through my local dealers or Amazon.
If you were already in there you should have replaced the check valve line as well it looks like it had seen better days :( Which will cause a problem down the road.

Wish I had not watched your video because you put the filter nozzle and hose out the bottom of the filter clamp when it should go out the side facing the pump. Going out the bottom causes the chance of hose kinking and stopping fuel flow.
It's also a known issue that the original hose was too long and rubbed on the tank, creating micro holes that sucked air when the fuel got low. I replaced that before the fuel pump change.
Just a tip I learned , dip the hose in hot water , the tube will expand and slip on with ease. Great video.
Thank you for sharing. Would have made that part much easier!

Tks for showing me where to put my scruedrìver to swing the flot ass.
That part is a real pain in the ass if you haven't done it once (or three times).
sorry if this is a dumb question but is your bike fuel injected? will this method work on a fuel injected bike?

You'll have to have it straightened to get it back in. So the pop is me disengaging the catch so it goes back to the L shape.

I had already replaced the regulator a few months before trying to resolve another fuel issue.
What brand lift is that? Do you have a link to it? I love how compact it is.
There's a few on Amazon in the $70-80 range that are the same. Just search for "motorcycle lift".
Michael McGrew Thank you!
Where did you get that jack stand you used in the video ?!
I got mine on sale from Walmart.com but there are plenty at a good price on Amazon.
Does carburetor models have this pump.?
I may have missed it, but why did the electrical connection from the old fuel pump assembly not fit the new fuel pump, which required you to cut if off and solder in a new connection?
That's the way the kit came. Perhaps the pump fits more than one model and they include the leads needed for the model you order. I'm not sure.
Great video but will use factory HD parts - just my choice.
Its the seals on the screws that needs to be replaced, not the screws themselves. Of course HD doesn't sell just the seals.
My brother who's been a Harley Master Mechanic for longer than I can remember would disagree. Those screws stretch enough that torqueing them a second time can compromise them.
You possibly could have depinned the fuel pump connector slid the old 1/4 female spade connector into the new connector plug housing
Great catch! And that would have been the best option. But I didn't get pin removal until a few months later. And I've destroyed too many molex connections in my life trying to disassemble them without a proper pin removal tool.
Question...when I took mine out of the tank that rubber sleeve around the pump was all gooey, do you think alcohol could have caused that?
It breaks down over time in the fuel. I had to order a new one myself. Alcohol should have no effect on the neoprene.
