  • Tiny correction right away, T25 torx not T20. I made this video trying to be very thorough, showing the replacement of the fuel line attached to the check valve, that produces a pinhole over time, and causes misfires/cylinder shut down, all stemming from this issue. Please let me know if it helped!!! Appreciate the feedback.

    This is the best video yet I found on this fuel pump, from the pinholes rubbed in from vibration from the tank and cutting the line to remove the pump. Most all the other videos I've seen did not address cutting the line or cutting the clamp. Thanks for all the part numbers too!

    Great video. Very informative & descriptive. I had a similar problem on my '06 Night Train around '08-'09, but it was the hose that goes from the pump to the filter that got the pin-hole. It was rubbing against something in the tank. When I turned the bike on, but didn't start it, you could hear the fuel pump prime and shut off like normal. Then pssssssssssssssssss as the pressure bled off out through the pin-hole. HD wanted something like $40 for just the hose & $90 for a fuel filter kit that came with the hose etc. So I bought & installed an aftermarket fuel filter kit that came with the hose etc for $30. Around 90k miles on the clock now and it is still running strong, but the fuel filter has been replaced a few times since then.

    I've been looking at these videos and looking at these videos, and one thing I noticed that they all got in common in these fuel systems, and fuel pumps inside the tank, and it's a reoccurring problem, I see a lot of fix it out there,
    But what I'm seeing most reoccur is the gas lines that you get for your fuel pumps and the line going down to the bottom of the tank, the corrugated hoses that you all have or get or that's what they give you look damn cheap! now if you're going to pay top notch for parts and whatnot you think you get some decent hoses with it because those gas lines are not much better than the straws that we used to use when we were kid that go up and go in and out like a accordion, I guarantee you if I have this problem one of these days I probably will I'll find a replacement hose to work better than that and I'll figure out a way to keep it from rubbing one way or another or wrap something around it in a trouble spot but most of all I get rid of them damn cheap gas lines, I measured it was my calipers they're only barely five times thicker than a straw is from McDonald's, and I want my trip to count on something a little bit better than that any ideas? I'm asking the gentleman that made this video because he done such fine job with it,the reason why I'm asking and I I'm actually asking anybody that wants to talk about it, cuz I believe I got some better hoses and what comes with the pump, now I've seen a lot of videos and they're all the same I mean not all the same always the same hoses and when they get pulled out of the tank they're all tan and scraped up well the tan is you know they're starting to get brittle from the gas, or starting to get brittle from the gas, I would say any kind of but then again I'm not a professional, polymer base pose that don't break down from gas that's clear and then can hold 60 lb of pressure would be pretty damn good,
    Thank you gentlemen.

    Great video, nice work. I've got a 2014 Sportster that I believe is suffering from the same pinhole problem. I just can't believe this has been a known issue for a decade or more and Harley hasn't come up with a more robust fuel line or some other prevention. I know "ethanol" and all, but c'mon.

    • @MidknightMechanics
      @MidknightMechanics  5 років тому

      Thanks a lot Jack. Couldn't agree more, this should have been a SAFETY recall. This issue is from chafing of the tube inside the tank. If you look very closely, you'll see on the other ribs of the hose, there are spots of worn away plastic, just not bad enough to create a hole yet.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage 4 роки тому

      +Jack Q & @@MidknightMechanics: Its all about how the hose bends inside the tank. It's not easy to snake it in there, as you experienced. So when you pop the fuel pump into position after you snake it into the tank its kind of the luck of the draw as to where the hose between the filter & quick-connect and hose between the pump & filter will bend. You just have to look inside to make sure its not going to rub on anything (including the fuel pump assembly) before buttoning it back up. It's a P.I.T.A., but I'm not sure there is a better way. If there is, I'm all ears. A thicker hose would still rub through eventually. It will just take longer.

      Thank you. Nope I didn't ask because I have no idea what the hose used in the current model Harley(s) is. Hopefully they already fixed this issue. I don't know why it wasn't a recall though, since a misfire on a bike is drastic and a safety concern..

    I thought I had a great idea to drain my tank at the check valve...Realized later on that there was a quick disconnect there. I now have a leak at the quick disconnect fitting (I think that its JUST the male part, with the o-ring) but I screwed the rest of that line back into the tank. I was able to ride the bike for a couple of minutes but do you think that I internally disconnected the line from the pump? The bike surely wouldn't run, if so...
