LOL...yeah man...I knew as soon as I put vice grips on there it would have been "yUoURe RuInINg ThAT HosE" ...so I literally spent the extra 8 bucks for clamps just to save the headache.
I just watched your video about 4 hours ago, then drove into town to the shop where I'm getting started on my 2003 Heritage, and had no issues removing my tank, thanks to you. I will add, a small shortcut I used from your method was to use just one hose clamp on the crossover hose, then after draining the side I removed the hose from first, I pulled the hose with the clamp on it back out the other side and stuck it in the long neck of my gas can, then simply undid the clamp to let that side drain. My gas can was a Plastic 2 1/2 Gallon can with the long flexible plastic pour spout, and that 5/16" hose fit in it perfectly, including length wise, due to the height of the jug and the length of the pour spout. I will say if your tank is over half full you will either need a bigger gas can or you'll have to empty it before completely emptying your gas tank. Thanks again for the great how to video, I look forward to watching your others...
Thanks for the video. I’ve got a 99 Fat Boy that has a 2 piece tank. Same basic process for removal, just a few additional steps because of the 2 tanks.
I invested in a transfer pump that works off of 12V. I installed a 12V cigarette plug on my adventure bike incase I need to reuse someone that ran out of gas. I use it also to drain all my unleaded gas from my 97 Yamaha Royal Star 1300 in prep for winter storage. I fill the tank with treated leaded gasoline and then run the carbs out with petcock in closed position with engine running until it cuts out. Bike always starts without a problem in the Spring. I have the same clamps and they work well. Another very good video.
Thank you Manuel! Yes sir thats what its all about...I have a manual pump but figued I would show everyone how to do it with no pump....I need to invest in a 12V operated one for sure.
Thanks for your instructional video. I just got thru rebuilding my fuel check valve. It was NOT fun since I did not totally remove the tank, just unbolted it, propped it up and used a mirror to see inside the coupling/quick disconnect where the check valve goes. After watching many videos using the process of elimination for the cheesy/risky steps to damage further components/parts. Without the $50.00 fuel tools kit, I bought the rebuild kit consisting of the spring, valve and 2 O’ rings supplied in the package. I used dental picks and a 9/32 deep well socket, small mirror and flashlight for the job. I spent a careful amount of time since I’m limited where to work on this bike and careful not to lose any parts on the ground(mainly the new spring). As much as I didn’t want to lose the “old”spring even though I probably wasn’t going to reuse it, it fell and landed somewhere I can’t find it. So with that being said, little parts and big fumbly fingers, I took extra care and time to make sure my new spring didn’t get lost. Anyway once I got the spring, check valve and 1st O ring in place. I made sure I seated it in the groove best I could see with the socket😅 or end of a blunt nail head/Allen wrench to avoid damaging the o ring during seating. The second O ring that sits below the valve took a bit of working with but going with what I see in the mirror up into the coupling, it is properly seated in its groove just below the check valve. Once done I reinstalled everything(tank, wiring, fuel line etc. filled the tank with just enough gas to crank it without refilling too much until confirmation of the job was a success. I turned on the ignition to check for leaks however still seeing a steady drip out of the coupler. I am stumped since I double checked the coupler to make sure the rings are seated correctly but my big question and frustration now after ALL that time and effort is…WHY is it “still” leaking? Is there someone I’m missing or another issue lying in the fuel line male fitting that goes up into the coupler, could that be faulty or worn out? Could it be the O rings not the proper size and not sealing correctly? I’m ready to ride but with gas leaking, it’s not good and sure not taking the chance to even starting the bike. Any suggestions?
One of the best tutorials I’ve ever seen lol. Why can’t they all be this simple! Thx man, I wish I watched this before I lifted my gas tank and broke my gas line. As simple as pushing up on a quick release could’ve saved me a tank of gas from spilling all over my bike 🤦🏼♂️

@@sikbaggers my road king is a bagger but it is a 04 so still has the dumb cross over line. Quick question about oil what is your opinion on redline or maxima oil
Hello Steve, my Nephew is having troubles with the headlight on his Soft Tail. I sent him your video and he said it was very helpful. I believe his Soft Tail is a 2016, and the cross over line has a quick disconnect in it which is great! His complaint is when he turns the handlebars the light goes out. I helped him out with texts and phone conversations. He got the tank off and pulled the headlight. So I mentioned to him to get the wiring together enough to light the headlight and move the harness around until the light goes out. He didn’t want to start dissecting the harness which is understandable. If you have any other advice please let me know. Thank you for sharing, and I did subscribe. Thanks again.
Thank you Frank...its pretty simple once you get in there...not too bad at all.. although I wont lie..I was dreading it...just because of the gas fumes you smell for a few hours after releasing that line. whew!
oh I just got it from harley..they have roles of it in the back for their techs...and its cheap...I think i paid like 3 bucks for a foot of it and cut it to length
Excellent video man...! Just what I've been looking for because I'm gonna have to replace my intake seals soon on an 07 Softail.! Do you have a video of the installation procedure on how to install the intake seals.?
Awesome vid man, I enjoyed it. Got my tank off, but how do you get all the old gas out. I let it drain and shook out what I could, but there's still some in there. It's an 06' Wide Glide that sat for a few years and yep the gas smells like varnish. Any suggestions? Cheers!
sorry for the late reply...some of these slipped by me...the best way to get it all out is to waste a little gas ...since you have the tank off...just water down the old fuel with some new fuel, swish it around and keep dumping it out...just small bits at a time...even if there is a little left after you fill the tank it will dilute it so much it wont matter..youll be good.
Great video Steve! Very infomative, quick question, what size is the lower fuel cross over hose 1/4" or 5/16" ??... I'm using vise grips {grin} replacing old hose anyway.
I hot a question, I had mine bored to a 95 abt 20000 mi ago and it sounds like something came loose in my rocker box, I had them install rocker lockers. Do you think that it could be that?
not sure if you ever did a m8 external oil breather video or not, but I would love to hear your opinion on m8 breather situation and your fix/ideas! thank you.
I havent addressed that yet but im sure I will this spring...we have a buddies bike that needs addressed and im trying to get it in here for the service. Weather permitting
Ah yes...I snuck that in because it was just one nut and 2 wires lol...didnt figure anyone would care how to do it lol But it is the Arlen Ness 10 gauge horn
Really enjoy your videos man they help me! I’m working on removing the tank on my old 98 road king with the M&M FI. What size was that spare fuel line you used 5/16? Thanks again man.
Question,I've got a 98 flhtcui that doesn't have the fuel outlet quick disconnect, do you have a video showing the removal of ,and there are 2,of this connection as well as replacing the fuel filter in these ancient Evos ,filters encased in an aluminum container unlike the new paper one. Thanks
I sure dont Bruce..but I do have a service manual for the 98 online if you want to check that out. You cna download it from my link here drive.google.com/file/d/1qM4iP_Z3Cu-hmt48Vkc5Ex8h_ODwAGIJ/view?usp=sharing It has a diagram of the fuel system and maybe that can get you started or going in the right direction.
what is the crossover line for if you dont mind me asking i just got a softail and the guy i got it from said one of the tanks is not connected so i only get fuel to one side of the tank and want it to know if i do the crossover line would help me get gas to both sides of the tank
Thanks Steve for the explanation! I have a 2006 Softail Deluxe and I would like to know if is possible that crossover to be obstructed, because I can’t ride for more then 100 miles without refill my bike. If could you help me thank you!!
I guess that it probably could be but you can replace that hose very easily from any tractor supply store or anyone that carries fuel line..just buy 1 foot of line and cut it down to size ...it should cost a couple of bucks..there is not special about the fuel line..it is just standard and you will need the size of your hose. You could take it off and take it with you to the store and compare it. Then you will know for sure if it is clogged and very easily change it while you have it off.
Hi thanks for your info. I watched your video so now i can remove the tank needed the know how to remove wiring i emptied my fuel tank by getting a piece of garden hose and got air into the tank using a rag to seal where the air gun went into the tank putting a container at the other end of hose once the hose has fuel in it it will drain with out the air and the hose will suck up any rust or rubbish in tank I hope this helps any one cheers Tony
Thanks for checking it out...and yes lots of ways to drain the tank...just wanted to show how the service manual says to do it...but yes...for sure a lot BETTER ways than this lol
I made a big ass mess taking my tank off of my 2010 deluxe lol. But it had to be done for me to do the wiring and stuff to put 18” ape hangers on my bike 🤓🇺🇸😁
After puttin the tank back on and refueling, my bike now will not actually start, it just turns over. Is there a process for gettin the bike to run after a tank drain?
turn the key on and off several times...you should hear the full pump running for about 4 seconds each time...that will prime the system...it may take up to 10 times to prime
I orderd the drag specialties braided hose and well..that thing sucked ass getting it back on.,.there is no play in it that thing an its tight. When you get it back on, it does look awesome...but good lord I had to to fight it
Get a old Injector fuel line and just plug in turn ignition on just to start a flow turn off ignition and let the fuel drain. It's slow but gets most of the fuel out. You way is faster and just as easy.
Hey Chad...got it made from Joel over at JH Choppers ..he doesn't have them listed on his site but give him a call or send him an email listed at the bottom of the page here..just tell him you saw my center stand plate and are interested in one...I saw some other guy get one and then called him and ordered one...not sure why he doesn't list them to be honest but I've seen a ton of them out there. He can do any logo on it as long as you have a vector file of your logo or you can just get it raw, or powder coated. jhchoppers.com/shop/

Hey J...yeah the bagger tanks come off in about 2 minutes and these softail tanks ..whew half a dang day just to remove a tank lol
Great Video! Thank you. BUT I missed the link on where to by the replacement fuel hose. Can you please help?
oh I just got it from harley..they have roles of it in the back for their techs...and its cheap...I think i paid like 3 bucks for a foot of it and cut it to length
Excellent video man...! Just what I've been looking for because I'm gonna have to replace my intake seals soon on an 07 Softail.! Do you have a video of the installation procedure on how to install the intake seals.?
I sure dont but I will very soon. My bassanis just shipped and ill be installing them soon.
I’m just gonna say that this video would’ve been great to watch before I attempted to remove mine. Likely set a cuss word record during my…fiasco.
Hey Brad I feel your pain ....they suck either way..im pretty sure the fuel tank was an after thought from HD...not a good design
Great videos Steve, gives me the confidence to work on my softail deluxe, best wishes mike 🇬🇧 Uk
Thank you Mike! Glad the videos have helped. Be safe!!
Stay safe Steve, roll on spring time, ride free,
Enjoy Daytona,Steve,
You Da Dam Man!!!!!! So simple!! Thanks
Thank you Joey!
Do you have a video showing how to replace head and rocker box gaskets on 2005 softail deluxe
Thank You! Well done mate!
thank you sir!
What size gas line do you use for your drain hose?
Thanks for your videos
Thank you Wesley! Much appreciated!
If you had the bottom part of the quick connect with a hose attached to it, could you drain the tank from there? Or am I missing something?
techically you could
Great video Steve! Very infomative, quick question, what size is the lower fuel cross over hose 1/4" or 5/16" ??...
I'm using vise grips {grin} replacing old hose anyway.
Thank you Scott..mine was a 1/2 inch
@@sikbaggers really? Is that ID or OD?

On point brotha
Thank you for checking it out Brian! Be safe!
I really enjoyed your video, very informative and you made me laugh, 😅
lol thanks for checking it out Mark! Glad to help sir!
I hot a question, I had mine bored to a 95 abt 20000 mi ago and it sounds like something came loose in my rocker box, I had them install rocker lockers. Do you think that it could be that?
Also is my 06 heritage the same as the one you just took off?
Thanks man.
Youre very welcome
Hey bro great video, they sell pliers to get that clamp off their A-frame pliers.
Damn that's a project, eh!!!
yes../.yes it is lol
not sure if you ever did a m8 external oil breather video or not, but I would love to hear your opinion on m8 breather situation and your fix/ideas! thank you.
I havent addressed that yet but im sure I will this spring...we have a buddies bike that needs addressed and im trying to get it in here for the service. Weather permitting
hey Steve i just seen that new horn you have on that softail i didn't see a video on that.. you mind me asking, what horn is that..it looks GREAT
Ah yes...I snuck that in because it was just one nut and 2 wires lol...didnt figure anyone would care how to do it lol But it is the Arlen Ness 10 gauge horn
Really enjoy your videos man they help me! I’m working on removing the tank on my old 98 road king with the M&M FI. What size was that spare fuel line you used 5/16? Thanks again man.
Sorry i missed this Trent ...swore i replied but its showing i didnt...and yes i used 5/16 but your bike may be different
@@sikbaggers very nice,I'll check it out, you've been very helpful to this old dude! Greetings again from Tampa Florida 😎
Great job!
thank you!
what is the crossover line for if you dont mind me asking i just got a softail and the guy i got it from said one of the tanks is not connected so i only get fuel to one side of the tank and want it to know if i do the crossover line would help me get gas to both sides of the tank
what softail did you get? That will help me better answer your questions
Thank you, good video
youre very welcome and thank you for checking it out
Thanks Steve for the explanation!
@@sikbaggers thanks!!👍🏽
Great video !
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you
yes sir!
Thanks
Glad to help, Gary!
Do we even need the crossover line on these Harley’s??
harley thought they did
Hi thanks for your info. I watched your video so now i can remove the tank needed the know how to remove wiring i emptied my fuel tank by getting a piece of garden hose and got air into the tank using a rag to seal where the air gun went into the tank putting a container at the other end of hose once the hose has fuel in it it will drain with out the air and the hose will suck up any rust or rubbish in tank
I hope this helps any one cheers Tony
Thanks for checking it out...and yes lots of ways to drain the tank...just wanted to show how the service manual says to do it...but yes...for sure a lot BETTER ways than this lol
Will the vacuum petcock drain without vacuum? Or running?
it shouldnt...thats the purpose of having a vacuum style...it nees to have vacuum to to flow
Tell em why you wanna discconect that fuel line before you lift up on the tank....I learned the hard way.
lol..yeah man...been there!
I made a big ass mess taking my tank off of my 2010 deluxe lol. But it had to be done for me to do the wiring and stuff to put 18” ape hangers on my bike 🤓🇺🇸😁
aaah getting ready to do that next on this bike...one of the reasons for pulling the tank...get it out of the way!
@@sikbaggers I have heard of people doing it without pulling the tank off but thats gotta be a pain in the ass lol
Would be Awesome to see you do a video on Ciro 3D Tac-10 light cannons.
that is in the works!
great job.
Thank you! Cheers!
How you get that back tank bolt off? Mine just spins.
Thank you for checking it out! And yes me too....takes a few seconds and could stop a potential leak from debris.
Works on My 04 road king😊
nice!
Nice
After puttin the tank back on and refueling, my bike now will not actually start, it just turns over. Is there a process for gettin the bike to run after a tank drain?
turn the key on and off several times...you should hear the full pump running for about 4 seconds each time...that will prime the system...it may take up to 10 times to prime
@sikbaggers hell yeah thanks for the quick response!
Sweet shop
thank you!
Do you know of a NICE looking replacement hose when I do my removal?
I orderd the drag specialties braided hose and well..that thing sucked ass getting it back on.,.there is no play in it that thing an its tight. When you get it back on, it does look awesome...but good lord I had to to fight it
Thanks for the “warning” lol
Thanks for the “warning” lol
Is the DS line short or a diameter problem?
@@mmurphy2005 no slack..the diameter is correct, not very bendy and no slack..just super tight to get on
Just do wheelies in your front yard till you run out of gas, problem solved and it was much more fun.
LOL...agreed!
Get a old Injector fuel line and just plug in turn ignition on just to start a flow turn off ignition and let the fuel drain. It's slow but gets most of the fuel out. You way is faster and just as easy.
Hey Bill....yes sir another great way to do it and it gets the job done...but yeah grab a drink..its gonna be awhile lol Been there.
@@sikbaggers couple of beers works.
Hey brotha a while back I saw 1 of ya videos u had a metal plate for ya center stand to sit on where can I get find 1 of those ?
Hey Chad...got it made from Joel over at JH Choppers ..he doesn't have them listed on his site but give him a call or send him an email listed at the bottom of the page here..just tell him you saw my center stand plate and are interested in one...I saw some other guy get one and then called him and ordered one...not sure why he doesn't list them to be honest but I've seen a ton of them out there. He can do any logo on it as long as you have a vector file of your logo or you can just get it raw, or powder coated. jhchoppers.com/shop/
Thank u brotha for da info...keep putting out dem videos they are very helpful for guys like me that works on there on glide thanks again brotha
