I've got a highland single malt scotch whisky from the Glenmorangie distillery today. This is the most premium expression from their core range. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

My whiskey collection has swelled to a point where- practically speaking- I just don't have a ton of space for extra bottles anymore. As such a bottle has to really stand out for me to consider it, be it a unique finish or a rare vintage or whatever else.
As far as I know, the only other bottle using chocolate barley is the Balvenie Day of Dark Barley, which is 3-4 times more expensive than Signet. So, somewhat begrudgingly after a few months of consideration, I ended up purchasing a bottle.
I don't dislike Glenmorangie, but I feel I have largely outgrown them. I am one of those people you alluded to in the review- I love Springbank, I love Ardbeg, I love Laphroaig. I came into it expecting it to be another typical Glenmo product- a premium price tag for something that at best is nothing more than "not bad". With that said though, I was pleasantly surprised by the dram. It is extremely sippable, to the point where I had to stop myself from blowing through the bottle and also to the point where people who don't know whiskey have unanimously enjoyed it. I am quite happy that it delivered on the unique factor as well, and in doing so has likely earned a permanent place in my collection.
Really, a great product, and one I am glad to have been wrong about and one I am glad to have purchased.

    • @Gwhisky

There are a few chocolate barley expressions out there. I tried a touch of that Balvenie and enjoyed it. There's also the Fettercairn 16, a bottle I recently reviewed. But yes, chocolate malted whiskies are few and far between.
I'm not the biggest Glenmorangie fan, but I do like the house style a lot. Their cask finishes aren't favourites, and I think they tend to overcharge for some of their special editions. But once in a while they put out something really special (I'll be pushing the Allta on people until the day I die).
Glad you enjoyed this one. I had heard enough about it prior to trying it to know that it wouldn't be a typical whisky, so my expectations were quite high. But it's always fun to go in with low expectations only to be blown away. Glad you enjoy it!

This is my yearly Christmas whiskey. Fantastic. Perfect special occasion/holiday bottle. Looks great, tastes great. Agree 100% -it tastes special. But just easy, different and enjoyable. It's one of the few bottles that gives you something different for the money. I can pick it up for around 170...which i think is fair. I've seen it higher but over 200 is a bit much. Other "special" whiskey's i've had in this range don't provide much in terms of different experience from many lower priced options. Well this and Octomore. I've been let down by Grand Cru, several 21+ whiskeys and plenty of Unicorns (Pappys). Glendronach 21 was good but the lower cost options in the range give a similar experience. You do get the 25 year aged for 21 px with the Parliament though, so there's that.

Great review, and agree with everything you said. It’s easy to get into a rut of continually drinking really good, but similar tasting, sherried or smoky whiskies. It’s great to find something like this that tastes completely different than anything else on the market and is still delicious. Is anyone else using chocolate malt? Haven’t seen any -- maybe because you need the really well aged stock and a lot of product to blend to make it well.

    • @Gwhisky

There aren't a lot of chocolate malted whiskies out there. There's the Balvenie Day of Dark Barley, there's the Fettercairn 16, and aside from our Signet here that's about all I can think of at the moment. To be honest, this one is my favourite of the three (although I only had a little sample of the Balvenie)!

Easily has become one of my favourite bottles I own as well. Love pulling this bottle out to show friends who are still fairly new to trying whiskey. I am still fairly new to the whiskey game, only 2 years or so, but one of my older friends is a big whiskey collector and has me over to teach me about whiskey and open some of his interesting bottles he's been storing for over 10years. Just opened a 25yr Brora Cask strength that literally took my breath away with how fruity and delicate a cask strength could be. Anyways just found the channel and love your style of reviews. If there was any significant percentage of old stock in Signet Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy would make us pay even more. Just look at the price of any Ardbeg older than 10 years old. If there's more than a dribble they can tell us on the fancy bottle.

I want to like Glenmorangie more than I do; the singular distillate, the famous stills, the obvious talent involved in production...but their offerings always come across overhyped and underwhelming to me. Heh...So, I got this. And, last week, in advance of the celebration, I broke the seal and shared samples around my closest mates. Yes, it is tasty. But, it is not nearly as unique as I expected. Indeed, with my first sample, my tastes went right to what I thought was a similar flavor profile. Not the same, but similar. That is the Benromach 15, my favorite whisky. So, the following day, I set out samples of Signet, Benro15, and Springbank15. TBH, the Benro doesn't quite get to the 'coffee' note, but it covers the chocolate and most of the rest of the profile. The Signet is 'smoother' and I can't help but think that if the Benro15 were aged a mite more, it would be closer yet. I suspect that Benro21 might be an even closer match. As it were, I'd say that Signet is the silk shirt, while the Benro15 is a flannel plaid shirt. It's nice, but this will be the only time I buy it, considering I can get most of those flavors from Benromach 15. The Springbank 15 was sweeter and more cloying than the others...different.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  11 місяців тому

Nice breakdown. I absolutely love the Signet. Gorgeous whisky, and yes, better than the Benromach 15 imo. The Benromach 15 is a stunner though, and if they upped the abv and kept the price where it's at, it could easily be one of my favourites. Cheers! 🥃

Jeff, I always wanted to have the Signet though the price in Ontario is over 350 CAD. Just last week the new batch came in after being out of stock for a few weeks. But "engineered, peanut butter, whipped cream, chocolate and mocha, butter-milk, medium and light" sounds a little "ordinary" for the price. Add to that the NAS - Not for me!!! I think the standard - non-chill filtered, no color added, cask-strength, and 18 years plays on most people's minds, don't you think? The only positive is something you said - ie Complex So maybe Some day!!! not now!! BTW Great review and analysis as usual!!

    • @Gwhisky

I think the tasting notes don't do justice to just how unique this is. This whiskies is unlike any other imo, but I can appreciate that the tasting notes don't quite do it justice. It's also got a good proportion of much older whiskies in it, which is quite obvious when you drink the stuff. That said, I totally understand if you want to skip this one. I'd recommend seeking out a sample or trying it at a bar to see what the fuss is about. Cheers Dylan and Happy New Year! 🥃

I love that it's so different from the other whiskies on my shelf which are mostly sherried and more... "scotch tasting" I guess you could say.

My whiskey collection has swelled to a point where- practically speaking- I just don't have a ton of space for extra bottles anymore. But, my Big Zero birthday (seven decades on deck) is on the horizon and I'm planning on making one big leap into a 'pricey' single malt. Prolly the one and only expensive ($200+/bottle) I'll ever purchase, because I'm reasonably happy at my current pecuniary commitment to a nerdy hobby. I haven't even seriously investigated bourbons or ryes, much less the likes of tequila, nor the nuances of the many herbal concoctions of gin. I'm a tight-fisted Scot, ffs. There are better horizons than the endlessly increasing prices of premium single malt Scotch. But, I gotta go there and touch base, just to say I went there.

      Hey Geoff,
You never want to I’ve to the states for whisky prices? Well I just looked at the SAQ website for what they used to charge when they had some in stock. $326.50 Canadian! :(
However, Alberta is currently having a Father’s Day sale at CAD$219 plus tax (generally 5% in Alberta) and shipping. Remind me why I live in Montreal again?

I love it. Dunno if it's ever worth the price. I have no idea what it usually sells for in Canada, so I can't comment. It's worth experiencing once, though. Hope you enjoy! 🥃

@@Gwhisky Thanks! At the liquor mart here in Manitoba, after tax, it would cost $367! Imagine that. But I managed to get it online from Craft cellars in Alberta with a 15% Canada day discount coupon totally $232 after tax. I've never seen it lower than that price in Canada, so im hoping it's fair. But given the packaging, the presentation, and the quality of this malt (going by what others have said of course) I'd imagine such a price can be justified? And if Gwhisky himself loves it, the how much better can it/should it be to justify the price.
Of course, im compelled to ask how you'd place it compared with a good Kavalan. In my mind, they should be similar, but you'd definitely know better since I've never had either.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 роки тому

Sounds like a good deal. Problem with whiskies like this is that even on discount it's still a hell of a price tag.
As for the Kavalan comparison, they're very different categories. Kavalan is big, dense, heavy whisky. The Glenmo is robust, but still has the delicate house style behind it. It's also more malty and coffee forward. Apples and oranges, really.
Hopefully you'll come back and share your impression of the Glenmo when you decide to pop it!

am I the only whisky drinker who doesn't give a dam if whiskey has coloring or not? Don't get me wrong - I prefer the natural color, but I don't really care if they add coloring, because it doesn't alter the nose or the palate of the whiskey.

I can taste it if they put enough in. I'd rather have a natural product, and I'll call them out if it isn't. However, if I like the whisky I'll buy it anyway.

🤣🤣🤣If there's 30-40 year old whisky in Signet I'm a Flying Dutchman. It might be 1% a bottle which will go some way to explain Signet's grotesque price whilst having no discernible effect on the finished product. Rather like the Port Ellen in Big Peat but that's one quarter of the price of Signet. Seriously, we want disclosure on our malt expressions and I, for one, would like to know why this bottle costs £165. It does, indeed, taste nice but I'm applying my orange juice test. The juice is delicious too but it's £4 a carton.
So, let's look into it. Adding colour into a whisky this price truly sucks. What's even worse is the attempt to turn it into a chocolate colour in order to fool our teeny brains into thinking we really can taste chocolate and, perhaps, imagine that the whisky is older than it is. Seriously, I'm very interested to know what this whisky really looks like because that would certainly effect our view of it. It's on a par with Bowmore 'Darkness' when all the darkness was the E150 dumped in it.
It does have some chocolaty mocha notes, which is it's unique selling point. I'll admit it's quite yummy but, and this is a big BUT I have long discovered a fix to the thorny issue of the price. I'm serious about this so listen up. Buy yourself an inoffensive 10 or 12 year old Speyside malt bottled at 40-46%. Then, purchase some half decent chocolate no higher than 60% cocoa solids. Eat some of the chocolate and coat your mouth. Now drink some of the regulation Spey whilst mixing the chocolate. I can assure you it's dekicious and just as good as Signet with a £120 saving. Signet is never "worth the money."

When I first tried the signet it was at a high end Bar. My first impression was "wow, this tastes like chocolate" that was before I googled information about this whiskey. The information about the colouring is disappointing but what I'm saying is it definitely tastes of chocolate as that was my first impression of it without knowing any information about it. It has become my favourite whiskey since and I'm about to buy my 3rd bottle since discovering it in 2021/22 summer Australia.
I will admit for half the price I do enjoy Oban 14, Morris Muscat barrel and Languvalan 16 almost as much and if I had the choice I'd probably buy 2 of the 3 before buying the signet but it's just a luxury that I love.
