  • The Glenmorangie Signet and Signet Week are a special time during the year when the Glenmorangie Distillery shuts down all production on everything but the whiskey that goes into the Signet.

    Edit: Watching this video 3 years later I realize that I said something that could be misconstrued. I mention the coffee malt "darkens the actual malt"... this is true, but that has no bearing on teh distillate that comes out of fermentation.

    Great review, Bill! I've gone through two of these over the years and was planning to get another after the summer. It's the perfect autumn dram. Love the chocolate and espresso notes, almost decadent for a Scotch. Slightly rough edges in the palate (I never noticed this until the second bottle) but not enough to ding it much. Cheers!

    Hey Bill great review, love the idea of this and love the fact that they solely shut down just to distill this, sounds like a very unique process. Cheers!

    Great and educational review, please keep up the good work!
    A few months ago I was fortunate enough to experience this whisky at a tasting event while Dr. Bill Lumsden, master distiller of Glenmorangie, walked us through the production process as well as the inspiration, research, and development that went into it. Truly, a unique expression that needs to be cherished.
    I share your review notes completely however, the dark color is not an attribute of the chocolate (roasted barley) malt as once it is distilled the spirit is clear (no color). Following distillation, Glenmorangie Signet is aged in a variety of different casks. While a portion of the whisky is matured in Spanish oak casks that were previously used to mature sherry, another portion is matured in new, charred oak casks. "The charred oak surface gives a very spicy, toasty style of whisky," says Lumsden. In addition, there is an "element of our oldest and rarest stocks - Glenmorangie whiskies from 35 years old through to 40 years old," he adds.

    Great review! I was actually in Scotland this week, and toured Glenmorangie and they do in fact shut down all other distillation except for the Signet during this time of year; which they were doing while I was there. The mash has a HUGE cocoa smell to it, and the entire room smells like warm/sweet chocolate milk. In the still room, you can't smell it though. It was a really cool experience going through the distillery and smelling the different barley they use etc.

    Nice job! I can confirm the gushing is justified. A few days ago while looking around a local store I hadn't been in yet when I was stopped in my tracks- Tucked back from the front on the bottom shelf there's that elusive black box! I said no way. This had been on my hit list as a rec from a friend who's been tutoring me in my 9 month's to date Scotch journey. I'm up to about 45 bottles of single malts in my collection so far and here's the deal~ This is tops! There is nothing like it. Even I, the student pilot who still feels nose blind, I can pick out why this is so special. Before this bottle the most exclusive thing I have is Highland Park Ice Edition which is absolutely fabulous! But this Signet is really something to experience.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  4 роки тому

      I never got to try the Ice edition. I remember seeing that when I first started the channel and thinking that would never be something I'd spring for. I've since had equally good things. It's fun where this whisky journey has taken us :)

    • @radamus210
      @radamus210 4 роки тому

      @@TheWhiskeyDictionary Yes it is. I transitioned from Tequila and Gin never thinking I;d like this stuff. I can't even put my nose in bourbon without gagging. So when I had my first good Scotch, well, it's been a fun adventure. I also enjoy some pure Rye's but there's so many single malts and so little time. But I'm not going to limit even to that. Recent acquisitions of Compass Box in the Flaming Heart and Spice Tree- after having them, don't care it say's blend when you get such complexity and body. It's no Johnny Black LOL! ~ It was fun to come across a review that I just sat and nodded my head over. I'll be checking out more of your stuff! and you can still find Ice, but honestly? I'll blow two bones on Signet all day long over 3 on Ice....but it's still sooo good. My Sensei tells me he likes Signet a bit more than Macallan Rare Cask and he really likes the Mac's.

    I have had a number of the Glenmorangie offerings and each, in a way, is an experience of special characteristics.
    Only one or two I would have crossed off my favored list. The Signet has it's own special characteristics, of course, noting the chocolate and various fruit, nose and palate, but also for me the best Balance out of their core range. Quinta Ruban is another notable, if you want to explore. But the Signet is special not just regarding price range (it's more around 250, than the 200 mentioned in the review): Exceptional Balance of sweetness (some of the Glenmorangies over-do the sweetness to the exclusion of barrel characteristics in my view), Flavor Notes, and superb drinking experience.
    Speaking of comparing the Signet to the reviewer's "600" dollar bottle ... I'd say that Signet competes on this level to be sure, but perhaps not in the complexity and full impact you might get from a Yamazaki 18, for instance.
    Signet is Well worth an acquisition, even at its current price, for its exceptional full and rich balance and characteristic Uniqueness.
    My 2 cents.

      Your gonna kill me... but, I jump off the wagon in March. I haven't had a drink in 10 years come Mar. That was my goal. So, I've added about a hundred bottles to my bar, several Cognac's, some top shelf vodka and a couple liqueurs.

Im curious, do you have any Whisk(e)ys that your looking out for, of course not mentioning the impossibles, GTS, Taylor 4 grain, Pappy's, T.H.H, sazerac rye, Whistlepig SOM, or Black Prince, Weller 12, I think you know where I'm going with that list...? thanks

    I don't believe any color comes from the chocolate malt as that is part of the mash prior to distilling. The new make is still going to be clear, it will only contribute flavors. I do believe they age the same new make in a variety of barrels and then blend them though, they may even use virgin oak for some of it which does have an impact on color for sure.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary

      AmazingKrimispinner, no, new make is clear as vodka. Color comes from cask maturation and sadly often from E150a.

      Interesting. I could see this effecting the color of the wort for sure, but I have never heard of a spirit coming off the still with any real color (not including cloudiness, bits of sediment/copper). I'm still skeptical. Thanks for sharing though

I guess I could take them down to the local metal collector and get maybe 40 cents for the bronze. But, that leaves me short about $240.00. Little chance for this retired hoser to aquire such a luxury. Love the channel nonetheless.

      A typical video makes me about 5 bucks. If I had to buy all my own stuff, the channel wouldn't be at all feasible.
      If you think any other channel isn't getting free bottles, you're mistaken. Even if they tell you they aren't. I know all the big channels well, we all take free bottles. Very few of us don't take money for reviews.
