An Aerial is an acrobatic move. While watching something mesmerizing, our minds lose all of our built up biases and filters, which usually keep us small minded in our day to day life.
He is basically saying, lose your small minded thinking. With an open mind, you'll free your life..

@@justdave9610 That is the definition when it is used as an adjective, but adjectives alone can't be used as a sentence's subject. With the letter "s" used at the end of the word making it plural, Aerial(Aerials), it can only take the definition of its noun form. Adjectives do not have singular or plural forms and never get an "s" at the end.
It is a preposition of location(stating something is somewhere). "Aerials" is a plural noun and the subject of the sentence. "In" is the preposition(in this case, expressing relation to the place) and "the sky" is the place. Circus Acrobats are performing "aerials in the sky/so up high..."
For even more context, the beginning of the video shows a circus tent, which is a place where acrobats perform.

Your question about the music, aparently Malakian was asked in a Variety interview about the instruments used. "There is a mandolin, there was some banjo and there was an actual sitar on “Aerials.” I had never played one before so I kind of winged it." -Malakian

My friend did that. Lol. He's such a bro, but he's also an unexpected musical prodigy. 😆 threw me off.
I knew he was gifted, but years ago i finally understood when he unpacked the fresh sitar he'd just gotten and had never played before, and plucked out something badass in 30 seconds.
I've heard him play music for years now. Has his own thing going. It still baffles me, though. Lol

If you look at the album credits it shows that he is playing the sitar on most of this album. It gives the sound more of an eastern, or more ethnic feel. Along with the vocals you definitely hear the Armenian influence mixed with the western rock , and metal infusion. When they debut, they literally sounded like no one else.

  • @aranthur
    @aranthur 9 місяців тому +22

That line, "Always want to play, but you never want to lose," strikes me as a reminder that every life ends in death, but not in a bad way? Some people refuse to really accept that, they want to live but they never want to die, and instead of appreciating the time they have they live their lives in fear of losing it
    It's a pretty beautiful line

So many good ones from SOAD to dive into. I always recommend P.L.U.C.K or Holy Mountains, as the message of those songs are a big part of who System is and what they've tried to bring recognition to over the years (the Armenian Genocide).

Man, turns out i didn't listen to most of the SOAD songs in years. Just saw your reaction recommended and decided to listen how you would like the group... Apparently i've never heard them after learning English, lol. As a teenager i just liked how they sound. This particular song brought me back to the time when i had no PC or any gaming console, but was very much into gaming. I was so much into it in fact, that i've not only endlessly annoyed anybody with gaming system with my constant visits to them with the intention to just sit at their place and play games for hours, but i also spent nights watching that weird TV channel that was rolling gamplay montages all night. One of the friquently played montages was cs 1.6 or css gameplay with this song played over it.
P.S. sorry my English, and sorry for a bit of a blog i got here😁. Just a strange memory that hit me in the face.

I think that's a reference of not accepting death as a part of life. We always want to have fun and have great moments in the life, but at the same time trying our best to avoid death even tho it is part of life too. Losing is a part of game, someone has to lose for you to win. Such as the cycle of life.

I believe the instrument that you hear at the end is a sitar, Indian/Central Asian origins, it’s like a guitar but also very different with the shape, amount of strings, the notes that those strings play and also that distinct sound of airy, legato notes. It’s a very unique, difficult but also interesting instrument, George Harrison of the Beatles would actually play some of it on some songs like “Love you too and Long, Long, Long.” Hope this helped!

This takes me back to 2000-2001 being in middle school. As far as Nu Metal bands they came out swinging. Everyone knew who they were then. Their sounds was like nothing before. Just like Linkin park at that time....Korn & Limp Bizkit where big then too.
Anyways 9/11 fucked up a lot for that band... as the lead singer is middle eastern. They got so much hate mail during that time & death threats. Super sad. Anyways that's a band that had so much talent/ a unique sound and changed the rock game at that time.

I believe that's a sitar that you hear. Basically, a Middle Eastern guitar. Think of the intro from Metallica's "Wherever I May Roam".

8:27 The instrument you're hearing is a sitar, which implies a connection to eastern spiritualism to interpret the lyrics.

You should cover System of a Down's other (albeit less popular) albums/songs! Their albums include:
    1. Self Titled
    2. Toxicity
    3. Steal This Album
    4. Mezmerize
    5. Hypnotize

again, i am a huge fan of SOD and their stance against the "haves" and pro the "have nots" , so i have followed interviews and other what nots that pertains to them well over a decade now. And I have learned their metaphorical meaning to Aerials is used as a verb for twists and turns... later i accidentally discovered that in sports such as skiing and surfing, the term "aerials" means a twist or turn that you make while you are up in the air after jumping,....things that make ya go , hmmm.
The song itself is saying ..in the end we will all be okay... dispite the actual reality of the things that go on in the world, murders, rapes, death, it can really bring you down if you acknowledge them. Another thing about a waterfall is that it never exists on its own, it always has a source, like a river or a stream. So if a waterfall is the acknowledgement of the terrible things in the world and letting it bring you down, what could the river be? The time before you realize what goes on in the world, often times this is your childhood. So when we’re one in the river, and we’re one again after the fall...so yeah, chill, it's all good. Peace, kiddies
