Pressure by Muse. 🔥
Pushit from Tool. My favorite from them.
The live drum cam of Pneuma! Just so you can see the skill on display by Danny Carey!
Love the videos man, just one request before you do any more. PLEASE go back to their first album and react to every song in chronological order. it'll be a worthwhile experience, us TOOL fans assure you!
At some point you have to see them do this live from the point of Danny carey's drum cam you'll gain an even deeper appreciation for what you're actually hearing. Keep up the good work brother! Hope the little ones are feeling better.
Agree, it‘s mesmerizing
Not at some point... do it now
You beat me to the comment. That video is absolutely insane!
Agree, it’s a must ✌️❤️
Yes! Yes! Yes! Upvotes :) you will LOVE watching the human octopus aka Polyrhythmic Magician aka Masterclass in drumming. I’ve watched it more times than I can count. Will watch it that many more.
Every percussion, every drum beat, every congos, bongos whatever you wanna call it is done by one man. No backing track, no layering. Just one man doing it all simultaneously throughout the song. Danny Carey, the octopus!
They're differently pitched tablas on a single electronic pad.
To me the fact he doesnt use a click track to keep tempo is flooring
Now just imagine he had 4 arms and legs
A God of drums
@@seansterling5322pay very very close attention to Chancellor's bass. Danny uses the Bass to keep everything grounded and flowing.
You HAVE to watch the drum cam of this, one of the most technically proficient performances of all time. Danny Carey, with the passing of Neal Peart, holds the crown of greatest living drummer
You’re forgetting Mike Portnoy
@@jacobdionne4334 And Tomas Haake
@@mooncalf_4534 And Vladislav Ulasevich
Don't miss Gavin Harrison
Knox! You need to check out Danny Carey's drum cam during a live performance of Pneuma. His skill is unmatched and unparalleled!
I was just going to comment this. He is amazing.
I second this
Danny Carey is absolutely one of the best there is. But even he was impressed by Thomas Haake’s skills.
Thomas Hakke, Neil Peart, and so many more. It's an impressive thing to watch all of the greats.
Yaas!
You don't really understand the technicality of what Danny is doing on the drums until you watch the live video of this. I had the absolute pleasure of seeing these guys live earlier in the year and when this song came on I was absolutely mesmerised. A Tool live gig is like a transcendental experience, and this song was the peak of it for me.
Yes, please and thank you.
I went to see them in February and dear god I was in a trance watching Danny the entire time.
93 Lollapalooza. Tool, Rage Against The Machine, Primus. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
I was actually at the live show in Boston that the drum cam was filmed. They were fantastic.
yeah, he's just dumb
Omg can we PLEASE make Tool Tuesdays a thing? Don’t play with our emotions, Knox!
I second this motion! Add to the queue Parabol/Parabola which may just be the greatest song lead in to another song of all time
I hope Metal Mondays continues but with Tool Tuesday as its own separate thing so we get a double dose of awesomeness for a while
Please do this it would be so awesome to have more TOOL reactions from you! I love how you digest the music and the lyrics, I get to "Vicariously" relive the thrill of discovering them again for the first time!
Yessss!!
Yesss tool Tuesday sounds awesome!
I second this recommendation!
Yes!! 🖤
Yes Knox thank you! I can promise you’re going to genuinely appreciate this band 🙌🏻
Also Danny Carey (drummer) is playing that beginning part by hand in real time on electronic drum pads. He’s a master of polyrhythms and unusual techniques.
Danny has been a master since before they started, he is a beast and was a jazz drummer for 5 or 10 years before switching over to metal with Tool. He uses the high hat and snare more then most drummers which is a staple of Jazz drumming.
Watch the live drum cam version of this song and you’ll see the legend at work. All percussion is done with sticks…no bongos
it's really interesting hearing a lyricist break this down, most of the other people are just impressed by the phenomenal Danny Carey live drumcam video, which is also worth a watch btw, but there's so much to be said about Maynard's lyrical composition; Tool isn't simply band of musicians, they're a quartet of music wizards.
I'll have to say this. Ur musical background really helps u with this song. U are able to pick up all the different polyrhythms in the song. Wait til u watch the live version with the Danny Carey cam. Ur mind will be blown. Even if u don't to a react to it just wait to witness the awe of the octopus man, Danny carey.
You need to check out the live version which features Danny Carey, the drummer, it’s insane what he does
Maynard gets the music from the other band members and listens to it relentlessly to determine the cadence of the syllables that will fit best rhythmically and melodically, then writes words to be those syllables. That is why his cadence, spacing, and delivery is so unique.
Yup, I think he said like 50 times
Tool and Pink Floyd are my 2 fav bands. They are just different. Just pure genius. Eulogy next!
Then you would (and probably do) love Porcupine Tree
My two favorite bands too!!!
Same here dude!
@@Vampagan I’ll check them out 🤘🏼
We would probably get along. Those are my top two bands of all time
Nothing better than being a life long fan of Tool and seeing someone fall into the world of these four amazing musicians.....
5 Musicians!
Don't forget the sound guy that does all the mixing.
One of my favorites for sheer meaning has to be "Right in Two." A great tune, with a great message. Like all Tool songs, actually.
Silly monkey 🐒
Danny is arguably the best there ever was. There is a drum cam video of this song… you can watch Danny’s performance in real time. It’s amazing.
you should react to "46 & 2" next....it will blow your mind
"I'm having an existential crisis on this track"
The birth cry of a tool fan.
Awesome reaction!
46 & 2, Lateralus, Sober, Parabol/ Parabola (together) these songs will make you go hmmmm. Can’t wait for you to dive into Tool’s catalog of great music!
Also Wings for Marie 1&2
ALL OF THIS RIGHT HERE!! 100% agree with these 2 comments.
You actually listen very well, and if you haven’t experienced much TOOL, I highly encourage you to dive on in, head-first. You actually seem to get it. I’m very impressed in this as a first reaction, and I’ve watched basically every video out there of reactions to this, my favorite song of all time. It is a marvelous masterpiece of a composition by the 4 geniuses that are TOOL.
Bravo, and if you look deeper into the song’s structure you’ll find how your descriptions of the “5/8 & 7/8” and the 4/4 sections as the Post-Chorus play into the grand scheme of things.
A few things:
1. Amazing reaction. Not many can catch such deep meanings and concepts first pass. Impressive.
2. Need to do Pnuema again with Danny drum cam as many have mentioned. Just do it.
3. TOOL Tuesday’s must be a thing.
Well done.
I just saw them last night. They performed this.
Adam, Justin, and Danny write all of the music first. They perfect it. Maynard writes poems, which then he fits to the songs.
Maynard is just another instrument.
The band has survived these years for the creative respect they have for each other.
Spiral out. 😉🤘👊
You really should make a Tool Tuesday a thing and focus on other bands for Metal Monday. Because aside from Maynard's work in Tool his bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer have large deep catalogs worth looking into.
Great call out ✌️❤️
🙄
Maynard Monday would be better
"How can you keep that kind of measured pacing"
The only answer is: Danny Carey. Absolute legend.
Tool sounds the same live vs on record because they're just that precise and technically transcendent, and this track with Danny's drum cam has been the reference since Fear Inoculum came out.
Danny Carey's drum cam plz!
Agreed. No mortal other than Danny could 🥁 this without a click track.
We aren't physical beings having a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings...having a physical experience. Tool is incredible...gotta love them. And YES on the syllable spacing IS like breath!
In interviews, Maynard has said he waits for the band to write and complete the music before he even tries to put lyrics to a song. Thought that was interesting. Great channel, thank you!
Danny Carey's drum techniques are on another level. You may want to check-out the live version of this song from Danny's perspective. You'll be shocked at how he makes those drums sing.
Pneuma (in Stoic thought) the vital spirit, soul, or creative force of a person. I just love Tool and I am enjoying your Tool journey. Do more Tool, I think you will enjoy it.
It’s refreshing having some tool reactions that also deep dive into the lyrics as well.
Hoping Tool Tuesday becomes a regular thing! 🤞
I hope you'll react to Lateralus at some point. The pauses between syllables in that song, as well as many other metrics of the song (duration, time signatures...) are fitting with the fibonacci sequence.
Sober or Schism have great lyrics to analyze too. 👍🏻
It's only the lyrics that follow the Fibonacci sequence. The time signatures are predominantly 7/8, 8/8, and 9/8 and the original title of the song was 7-8-9 because of that.
You have entered the rabbit hole….incredible band. Greatest ever truly
When Maynard comes to the table to work the lyrics, all of the music is completed. His part is the last piece recorded. It makes Tool a very cool band to listen to.
This song is enhanced greatly when you watch the drum cam and you can really appriciate Danny´s magic! But a great reaction as always Knox!
I am so happy to see an intelligent review of a tool song. You see this song for exactly what it is. I am so tired of seeing these other reviewers do these shallow ass reviews and are unable to think deeper. Love this!!
He's playing all on drums. 3-5 different rhythms at once I've seen him do. Dudes insane!!!
This is one of my favorite tracks from this band ever. Dude the Drum cam video of this track is so sick if you are a drum fan.
pretty sure the band creates the music and maynard listens to it and adds his vocals and input and they go back and forth making changes and refining the individual songs. so they approach creating a song differently than many modern musicians/bands
Just went thru and LIKED every comment that called for the LIVE Drum Cam Video of this song, and voting for the institution of TOOL Tuesday doing their entire discography, in order. You'll find that there is a narrative thread that is compelling, tragic and ultimately uplifting. 🔥🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽
In simplest terms the verses are in 21/8. 👍🏽😁
Family comes first, never apologize for taking care of your little ones. Love what you do man and want to see you keep doing it. That means not burning out. Don't worry -- we're insatiable. We'll be here when you come back.
You def need to check out the drum cam live version of this song Knox, those "bongos and hand percussion" you're hearing is Danny on his drum kit with pads. Each one of his limbs is playing a different beat and pattern in that "interlude" section. Then he does GOAT things and brings it back around. Truly a master of the craft. #spiralout 🤘🤘
Something from the AEnima or Lateralus albums is a must, they are the best imo
Might be time to get your own Tool Tuesday going. Other channels have done it but I feel like the way you break these songs down you could really bring in the Tool fanatics. And we are special.
Sorry to hear about your kiddos being sick. Never apologize for dad time. It is the most important job we have.
Must absolutely see the Danny Carey drum cam version of this song. All those different drum parts are being made by just one guy, simultaneously. It's fucking amazing.
I can suggest Tool - Pushit(Salival Live) for you if you enjoy Maynard's voice and sound effects. Actually, Maynard makes excellent use of his voice in this live performance, and every time I listen to it, it makes me feel pleased, melancholy, and reflective. Pushit can be given a chance.
The live version of Pushit just hits so different
Please listen to The Grudge by tool next - where many tool songs lean into a specific aspect of their style, the grudge has a bit of everything they deliver
You have just heard what mastering every level of musicianship sounds like.
if you like lyrics , i would suggest , schism, vicarious, or right in two. but to be honest i like all of tool songs for one thing or another. cheers
Lateralus reaction needs to happen! Song is based in the Fibonacci sequence (count the lyrical syllables). Also rumors of the beats working into that (9/8, 8/8, 7/8, or 987) and the chord progression.
One more vote for the pneuma drum cam. I have seen it hundreds of times and it never gets old.
It's great to see you react to studio. Seen Danny's cam so many times I can visualize him playing while you experience...Frickin cool af!!
Watch Danny's drum cam!!
Do us TOOL fans a favor and react to "the grudge, vicarious, schism, the patient, lateralus" to start with. Especially if you want the sick lyrics to accompany the insane musicality. #TOOL #HOG
You have to watch the Live Cam of Dannys Drumming on the track. It's unbelievable what he can do. Every limb has its own time signature.
Can Tool Tuesdays just be a thing now?
Watching Knox react to Tool might be my new favorite thing to watch on reaction channels. Guaranteed to get the respect the art deserves.
Good on you for noticing the instrumentation of Maynard's vocals, you hit the nail on the head early on there where you talked about how he mostly uses his vocals as a way to add to the instrumentation. The way I've always seen Maynards vocal performances as well has been more as an instrument than as a frontman.
Please do the grudge or vicarious by tool next. Thanks for the reaction. Amazing!
You really REALLY should watch the live drum performance. It's absolutely amazing
Tool tuesdays needs to be a thing!!
Love the reactions :D
Danny Carey is definitely one of my favorite drummers. The live video they have of this song where it's just pointed at him is a great watch as well. Really shows off his skills.
watching danny do all that live is an experience unto itself
also, Fear Inoculum is one of the best mixed/mastered albums i've ever encountered
The most brilliant thing about this song (and there are many) is that the chorus has no words
This is one of those you really should have done Danny Carey's live drum cam. I think pretty much everyone agrees that's the best way to really appreciate his mastery on this song.
Agreed ✌️❤️
For shizzle, all my nizzles!
Nah first listen should be the studio version so u can really appreciate the musical mastery. Drum cam is pretty cool though as a follow up to see just wtf Danny is doing lol.
Totally agreed
I am so impressed by your musical analysis. I've watched a lot of your content as a silent viewer like I usually do but your metal reactions have really won me over. You give great respect to the pieces of music that you listen to. You're tuned for hearing layers that are difficult to distinguish and in addition you have a lot of lyrical and speech literacy. Really great content man. Very attentive and impressive.
You have just entered the MENSA of rock. 🙌🏼♥️
There is a reason Danny Carey is known as the octopus. He is God tier as a drummer
The Drum cam of this song is amazing
That drop at 20:04 is my absolute favorite from TOOL. After the long slow build-up, it comes to the heaviest of climaxes. Just awesome stuff.
Great reaction as always Knox, you also need to check out Vicarious, Lateralus, Invincible, and the grudge by Tool. Each song has deep lyrical meaning and awesome musicality.
PLEASE - if you don’t know what it is look up the Fibonacci Sequence before you watch Lateralus. Mind blown when you make the connection. Come on and need out with us! 😊
Spiral out
@@maryrollins607 Ah yeah, I LOVE the capuchino sequence
Now that you've reacted to and know the song you gotta do the Danny Carey camera view, you'll have a whole new respect for him and his other worldly ability
watching the drum cam live version is a must for this song
I can not express how hyped i am you're doing Tool again!
Maynard's delivery comes from the fact that the rest of the band completes the entire album then Maynard come in and lays the vocals down. He's able to find these pockets in the music and places where his lyrics can enhance the song.
Now you have to watch the drum cam for this song. Danny Carey the drummer is playing all of those sounds you speak of on this track. Amazing.
Such a deep song with really so few words. I just started listening to tool reactions today, and I do appreciate how you try to interpret the lyrics. Tool is the best band in history. See them live. It is amazing and overwhelming.
Tool by far my favorite band, they have so much meaning to their music.
The main time signature of this song is 33/16 🤯
Pneuma is basically "air in motion" or a breath. And as many people have said before me, check out the Danny Carey drum cam version of this song. I promise you will not be let down.
Knox, you don't just react, you interpret the (genius) lyrics and make your subs understand what Maynard is conveying. I just love the way you do this. More reactors should take your method of reacting. Beautiful. It's not just a song, it's a message. Thank You!!
Pneuma is Latin for spirit, this song is about looking beyond our body and mind. To grow specially and allow grow and creativity. To not be limited by our humanity. Also this is form their 2019 Fear inoculum album that came out 13 years after the fourth album 10,000 days.
It's an ancient Greek word used up to today. The translation is as you said spirit.
Slight correction, Pneuma (πνεῦμα) is Greek for breath/spirit
Finally!! If you upload Tuesdays I guess you will have to make it Toolsday! More please, check something out by them from 1996. My favorite on AEnima is Eulogy!
More Tool!! Their songs are amazing and every one of them needs this kind of TLC!
Adam, Justin, and Danny make the music and then send it to Maynard. Maynard then writes the lyrics to fit perfectly
The more you listen to Tool, the more you notice how Maynard uses different cadences and how they interplay with Danny's beats.
All of tools album tell a story from the first to last song. You really owe it to yourself to hear this entire album all the way through.
Of course us Tool fans would love a full album react.
Ah dude you need to do the pneuma drum cam, especially after hearing this version you'll be shocked to see Danny doing it all, he's the goat!
It's been said that a wise man once offered this bit knowledge: "smart people listen to Tool."
I can tell you understand. I wish I could have gotten into it sooner.
I have to admit this was one of the best reactions to this song! I really enjoyed your interpretations of the words and I agree with everyone else that you need to watch the Danny live cam of this song. I would love to watch your mind melt LOL!!
Really enjoyed this reaction, when I saw you'd reacted to this song I wondered how you'd take the long non-vocal sections given your background. Once again you nailed it and showed how genuinely open and interested you are to not just hear a song to make a reaction but that you're really listening to understand and interpret. Top work, keep it up.
So cute to see a newcomer salivate to the magnificence behind TOOL. As a day 1 fan of the band and other similar acts this makes me smile. There are truly talented, out of the box, insanely innovative artists/bands out there. KNOX HILL, you should react to PORCUPINE TREE / LEPROUS / DEVIN TOWNSEND / OPETH / PINK FLOYD / MASTODON ... Not cookie cutter, poppy, cardboard acts but truly masters of their craft.
MUST DO DRUM CAM. Danny plays this live, no backing tracks, he playing multiple polyrhythms at once.
I knew everyone would be suggesting the drum video. You would enjoy it but the song I'm really waiting on is Ænema! Please make tool Tuesday a thing on top of metal Monday
That would be Aenima.
@@zippymacadoo6336 xD yes my brain was still asleep and probably mixed in the bill hicks album.
Naaah, you need to see the live drum cam of Danny Carey performing this, so you can comment on the drum sounds being made! (Loving your reactions, keep em coming!!!!)
Hey Knox, 50yo man here, original 92 OG Tool fan here, and I love all types of music. I've watched several of your reaction vids, most of the Eminem ones, and I like your very technical breakdowns of rhyme schemes, rhythm, and lyrical analysis. This vid earned you a sub and bell notification from me, and like the others let me suggest that you revisit Pneuma by Tool the live version from Danny Carey's perspective (he's the Drummer). It will absolutely knock your socks off, even if you aren't a drummer because you'll realize just how technical he is, how precise in his rhythms, and be stunned at the set up.
If you like Tool, you should absolutely also check out 46+2, which is one of my favorites, and Lateralus. If you like off beat time signatures and lyrical shenanigans, Lateralus utilizes the Fibonacci sequence, and there are a few different videos that discuss this. If you're unfamiliar with the Fibonacci sequence, look it up. It is musical genius. No other band is quite like Tool.
It's fun watching a new Tool fan burgeoning into existence.
Also, burgeoning is a great word that you should use in your own lyrics someday.
Hey Knox, like many others here im about to tell you to watch the drum cam (Danny Carey's Performance) of this song. In this case i urge you to listen to the masses. Since you've already been talking a lot about the technicality and his polyrythms i bet you (and per proxy us) are really gonna enjoy reacting to it.
Found you through your ERB reactions back in the day and enjoyed metal mondays ever since they were a thing.
Keep up the good work knox, glad to have someone as sophisticated, well spoken and genuinely interesting reacting to such masterpieces as this one.
Here is a serious question for you. Do you think TOOL is going to affect the music that you will make in the future? I, for one, would like to hear what TOOL inspired rap might sound like. Post it. I will listen.
What do you say guys. Like this comment if you want to hear TOOL inspired rap by a guy who has clearly been moved by this music.
Your reactions are damn good. You are well spoken and deep. Salute
Tool turns everyone into a philosopher lol, prepare for more deep thoughts! And nobody has just one favorite Tool song, so no pressure to pick :)
That said, you MUST WATCH the live drum cam for Pnuema - it's from 2019, the drummer (Danny Carey) was 58 years old in the video. Full beast mode.
Other Tool suggestions:
Descending
Forty Six & 2
Vicarious
Lateralus (based on fibonacci sequence)
Jimmy
H.
The Grudge
H.W.A.P.
These songs are pairs made to be listened to in succession:
Intension/ Right In Two
Parabol/ Parabola
Last Keys/ Rosetta Stoned
Think that should keep you busy for a while lol
Spiral Out!!
Gotta watch Danny Carey Pnuema live. He is doing it all on the drums
Knox I love the content! If you want to see your subscribers grow and go on a surreal journey stick with metal Mondays but incorporate Tool Tuesday! They have a plethora of songs and all are mind blowing in the musicianship and content that will make you think. Spiral out and be ready to hear from the Tool army!
