I used to mow a 20 acre field with a Kubota L4060 and a 7 foot finish mower. It would take 6 hours of actual seat time. Tractor service before and cleanup after and you pretty much used up an 8 hour day. Enjoying your practical and useful content. BJ

I am so jealous of "Flat & Straight" - and multiple times a year. My mowing jobs in Vermont are Hilly & Rocky - and they only want them done once a year, so the grass is 4' tall.
You have to make it make financial sense for them, If they only want it done once a year you need to charge more than double. Inherently the further south you go the more you'll be mowing
@@ericcrockett6396 it's because the blades are rotating the opposite direction the tractor tires are pushing the grass down. It's better than a flail because he was cutting off stuff thicker than an inch and leaving a finished look.
While I'm in the tractor market myself, I was impressed with how well this 30 TPO hp handled that 10 footer. If handled correctly (as shown), you can do a lot with a little tractor if need be. Thanks Tim.

Christy was working hard on this job, especially those trim under the tree shots! I like that you can clean that screen without lifting the hood. I don't take my loader off so cleaning the removable screen requires lifting the loader, lowering the brush bar then opening the hood. Clean and reverse the process.

I do a lot of mowing like this commercially and I agree with overlapping your lanes a little to make sure you get as much of the material as possible. I do the same thing and I find it helps with mulch up the material even better and spreads it out a lot more evenly.

I have noticed with mowing a 3 acre property. It needed some attention going over it at least twice. With a belly mower a front bucket on my 2305 open station and a rear blade for weight offset. It hadn’t been mowed likely never, an old horse pasture. Was there all week on it. By the end of the week I had lost 5 pounds.
Tim, the title had me thinking of the great movie "Caddyshack" with Rodney Dangerfield. This was a neat demo of all three mowers and two different tractors. Salty's repair job looks good still so kudos to you and Chris on that.
I like the cover for the front of the tractor. I use my 2025R to mow and brush hog. Anything to keep debris from entering the front of the machine would be great!

I regularly have problems with that and would be interested in the material. I have a John Deere 2320 purchased around 2006. I am getting the beet juice Rim Guard liquid installed next week when I am passing the closest dealer. The rear Summit Hydraulics 4 spool is fantastic. I already had the Artillian front 2 spool for snowplowing and grapple activity. Thank you for what you do and keep them coming.
Hi Tim, This has been a great comparison! These are important numbers for everyone! I would really like to see a 4th additional test. Use the same 3520 with the TS10 pull behind mower, and instead of going back and forth on the rows, try starting in the middle at the tower and building, and go min an ever expanding circle. The process of going back and forth adds a lot of time to keep turning around. I'm going to bet you a cheeseburger for both of you that it will shave off at least 10+ minutes. I live in northern ILL, so I will be happy to make the 3-1/2 hour drive to pay up in case I'm wrong. 🙂
I imagine somewhere nearby there is a young 24 yr old farm kid with 8 head of cattle that drives by this property every few weeks and wishes he could bale it instead of it just getting mowed!
Although it's a little unintuitive, it's really cool that 3 gearboxes and 3 smaller blades are more efficient at mowing than one gearbox and one larger blade.

Tractor(s) TIMED with Tim 😊 The pull mower being wider AND taking, better words might be "not adding", a LOT of the backjarring bounce out of the tractor that the 3 point has, probably made it more pleasant as well. There are other disadvantages to the pull behind - longer and heavier trailer, more hydraulics, etc., but if one does a lot of large field mowing, those factors become less burdensome and more advantageous. To have both systems and the means of hauling them is the solution to a problem most do not have. You definitely get your jobs done.👍👍
Very interesting! And Tim, it will not hurt your tractor to work it and pull a constant load. That is what a diesel engine is designed to do as long as it has oil pressure and does not overheat. Actually, to run a diesel engine with little or no load is worse than a heavy load, but we won't go into that here.
I remember growing up plowing with a 4020 and I think a 6 bottom plow, there was a spot that pulled hard and you had to raise and lower the plow slightly to get through it. That evening when it cooled off, it pulled through it just fine as we had a few more HP with the cooler air. I wonder if you could see that mowing if your logistics would allow it, except evening could bring dew in the grass and make it pull harder.
I was guessing 2:50 with the 10. For me, it’s not the time, but the number of times around the field and the beating my old body takes cutting it. My fields used to be corn rows many years ago and it still shows so it’s a rough ride.
For sure like hydrostat for “shredding” as we call it. I once got into 6+’ careless weeds with the old 800 Case “Case O Matic” torque converter 8 speed. Was ok with the ability to go straight or torque converter, but constantly shifting going in and out of thick weeds. The L4701 Kubota hydrostat is just easier. I could fairly easily turn that 10’. But my ancient JD on draft arms 6’ is so good! But sure enjoyed this one! Lots of good info! God Bless!

Well, that pretty well answered my question about my Kubota 5400 (54 Net/47 PTO HP) being able handle a 12’ Batwing Mower - In my opinion, I was sure it could under somewhat “normal” conditions - This Video PROVES IT… Watching your development, of the screen for the radiator cooling intake - The current removable screen, is not the best setup - Keeping debris OUT of the engine compartment in the first place, is much more Ideal…
It’d be interesting to add the 3046 and the 5 series to this timed test just to show people what tractor they should be buying to efficiently mow this sized area
I’m curious about the screen for my 4 series. Tall material and thistle fuzz really plug up the standard screen. I can attest that the TS-10 pulls easier than my 6 ft rotary cutter. Very nice machine that does a great job. Blessings.
I find that intake screen material very interesting. And I' would like to know more about it in the future. What is minimum recommended horsepower for a 10' mower/Bush Hog of that basic type? I'm impressed by how that tractor did, but it really seems to be a little underpowered for that mower.
It seems the limiting factor the 1025r is the terrain and rough ride. Short, narrow wheelbase means going slow and leaves HP unused. I'd imagine it could knock an hour off if it could pick up the 6' mower at all. Bigger mowers are preferable anyway. Less passes means less overlap potential -both in total inches but also in percentage of mowing width. Don't have to take a full pass if grass is thick and you run out of HP. Mash that hydro pedal and make up time when its really thin.
Future programs: you mentioned roughness. We get hog damage here and repairing it is a problem. You might consider trying different techniques for smoothing out rough pastures ... Disk...rototill, aireator, drum roller for compaction. Couple of different objectives. Minimal tending so grass survives after processing, or get flat and reseed...I can send pics of the damage if you like.
Tim when I brush hog my pasture fields with grass breyers and iron weeds with a JD 5055e I go 2nd gear B range 1800 rpm set the throttle on top when I come to open end I hit the foot throttle start cutting let off the foot throttle I overlap the back tire width..6' brush hog i use.. Steve from WV
Tim I put my loader halfway down so the debris doesn't get in the radiator also I bought a wide paint brush to brush off the radiator until I blow it off with a air compressor I keep looking at the temperature if it gets over halfway.. Steve from WV
It looks like it cuts fine. I would be interested to see if cutting in the perpendicular direction so your straight cutting rows are longer. That may save you some time if you have to turn around fewer times.
I don’t sharpen very much or very often. I use an angle grinder. I don’t even take the blades off to sharpen. I leave them very blunt. Say 1/4” flat blunt. Sharpen any further and they will ‘roll’ when they hit something.
Id like to see more info on the front screen. It's a paint to pull the screens next to the radiator and clean them while I'm mowing. I don't see why they don't offer tractors with a revering fans.
It would be interesting to understand the 6ft v 10ft mower costs that gives you the 30 minutes time saving. In addition, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be keen to see Vinny put to the same test. The guards look interesting - do the 3 or 4 series have a reversing fan (either standard or optional) so you could blow them off from the cab? If not, it makes sense that you'd have a guard that avoids the screens getting blocked given their lack of easy cleaning.
I’m very interested in the tractor screen. When I cut the high grass it gets so much stuff on it. My wife has to bring me the blower and the vacuum so clean out the radiator. I’ve tried so many things but I still have to watch the temp gauge.
3700 hours is only well run in ... like new ... Its a nice field if u allowed u could to a tiny hay and bale session ... showing some mini hay equipment ..
Gas reasonably plenty of power/force, yet diesel has substantialy more torque which I believe let's you go/push harder in the application like this of mowing, while running a wider deck on that.
Ohh I enjoined this Tim. Early in the video you said salty was wore out with 3700 hours. I guess you were joking. My 3038e has 30 at the pto. I would love to lay some grass down with a 10 foot Rhyno. There around 14k though🙀. Can I borrow urs???
After watching your videos this spring and summer I’m starting to think a second older tractor for brush hogging running the generator and maybe the wood chipper so the tractor with grapple is free maybe the way to go
So maybe the factors are: initial cost of equipment, cost to operate for the given job, time to complete, safety/risk, and enjoyment. Are there any other factors you mull over on jobs like this one? Sure appreciate the comparison.
My 520 when i brush hogged moms field i noticed a bit of build up on the grill but no temp issues. But im up another foot. Im guessing 2:30 minutes and yes i was thinking this before you said last chance. Be interesting on how well my 520 would run that since an m can. Up at buckley old engine show by traverse city mi i put out 36.4 peak belt hp. Not sure what i make on pto as the pony brake starts real hard and my pto clutch is kinda hard to redo. If i started running bigger pto implements regularly i would look to rebuild my old clutch and hace it on standby as i got a used assembly years ago when mine failed. ( gramps beat the shaft up bad by not having short enough shaft when raising 3pt brush hog up) if i had spare clutch ready i could swap it out in say 20 minutes. This year went bad coming home my 7.3 powerstroke i believe now has a hole in a piston
very much want to get some that cover let me know when and where to get it i have my kubota tractor if you would want to see how the screen works on it and i would still pay for it also
Hey Tim, it’s funny I saw this. I’m seriously looking at a batwing for my cutting needs. And I want to deploy the 15’. But who knows if I go that wide. Anyways. You have had that cutter for a few years. Forgive me, I don’t see every video you make. Could you speak to how the cutter has faired since you started using it? Also do some videos on the overall condition of the underside. I have a 6’ and I’m cutting 25acres 6 times a season. It’s taking too long, and the cutter I have (brand new just 2 years ago) is already on its 3rd stump jumper. Yes the property is rough, but I’m thinking g that the pan design (different manufacture) is part of the reason for some of the issue. My blades can swing so far up that they hit the deck. Even with new blades, carrier and bolts. It’s first day it had already done it. Anyways. I’m really thinking Rhino and want to go to the TS12 to get as close as possible to the 15’ width. I know the TS series uses the ramped pan design have you had any issues with it?
If your budget allows. You might consider the new tougher 12’ Rhino cutter. I believe it is the 4125. It is heavier and tougher than the TS10 or TS12. If you are having issues with your existing cutter not being tough enough, the 4125 will solve them! Answering your question, we have shown the underside of the TS10 quite frequently. We have had no problems with it. I’m still using original blades. I have a couple of tiny dents in the deck where a rock or chunk has been thrown upward into it, but nothing serious. Even the smaller Rhinos are built tougher than the competition.

The same piece of ground will take much longer when it's 4' tall vs 1 ft.
The 10ft mower cut quality is wayyyyy beter than the other mowers.

I've got a 2305 that I'd be interested in that screen for it. Collects grass clippings pretty easy and I have to keep an eye on it.

Looks Good! Might have to design a hydro hose holder so the lift hose doesn't drag or snag while using the 3. Nice time savings!

It is rarely more efficient to trim first. As you mow, you can trim most areas quickly without delay and little is left to go back for.

I think your overlap is fine. Our grass will be 3’-4’ when I mow, so I get what you’re saying.

I did not put in a guess, but to be honest, the 38 minutes was a greater time difference than I expected due to the harder mowing conditions.

Tim I put my loader halfway down so the debris doesn't get in the radiator also I bought a wide paint brush to brush off the radiator until I blow it off with a air compressor I keep looking at the temperature if it gets over halfway.. Steve from WV
The motors in these tractors will take almost anything you can throw at them as long as you keep oil and coolant in them.
It looks like it cuts fine. I would be interested to see if cutting in the perpendicular direction so your straight cutting rows are longer. That may save you some time if you have to turn around fewer times.
How often do you sharpen the blade on the brush cutters and how sharp do you get them.
I don’t sharpen very much or very often.
I use an angle grinder. I don’t even take the blades off to sharpen.
I leave them very blunt. Say 1/4” flat blunt.
Sharpen any further and they will ‘roll’ when they hit something.
Id like to see more info on the front screen. It's a paint to pull the screens next to the radiator and clean them while I'm mowing. I don't see why they don't offer tractors with a revering fans.

It would be interesting to understand the 6ft v 10ft mower costs that gives you the 30 minutes time saving. In addition, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be keen to see Vinny put to the same test. The guards look interesting - do the 3 or 4 series have a reversing fan (either standard or optional) so you could blow them off from the cab? If not, it makes sense that you'd have a guard that avoids the screens getting blocked given their lack of easy cleaning.
No reversing fan. They say there is not room.
I’m very interested in the tractor screen. When I cut the high grass it gets so much stuff on it. My wife has to bring me the blower and the vacuum so clean out the radiator. I’ve tried so many things but I still have to watch the temp gauge.

3700 hours is only well run in ... like new ... Its a nice field if u allowed u could to a tiny hay and bale session ... showing some mini hay equipment ..
Gas reasonably plenty of power/force, yet diesel has substantialy more torque which I believe let's you go/push harder in the application like this of mowing, while running a wider deck on that.
Instead of doing large circles around the whole area, you might try doing progressive ovals. It is nonstop and the turns are more efficient.

Ohh I enjoined this Tim. Early in the video you said salty was wore out with 3700 hours. I guess you were joking. My 3038e has 30 at the pto. I would love to lay some grass down with a 10 foot Rhyno. There around 14k though🙀. Can I borrow urs???
After watching your videos this spring and summer I’m starting to think a second older tractor for brush hogging running the generator and maybe the wood chipper so the tractor with grapple is free maybe the way to go
It really is worth considering.
And if you get the right machine, it can be a fun project (like ole salty).
So maybe the factors are: initial cost of equipment, cost to operate for the given job, time to complete, safety/risk, and enjoyment. Are there any other factors you mull over on jobs like this one? Sure appreciate the comparison.
My 520 when i brush hogged moms field i noticed a bit of build up on the grill but no temp issues. But im up another foot. Im guessing 2:30 minutes and yes i was thinking this before you said last chance. Be interesting on how well my 520 would run that since an m can. Up at buckley old engine show by traverse city mi i put out 36.4 peak belt hp. Not sure what i make on pto as the pony brake starts real hard and my pto clutch is kinda hard to redo. If i started running bigger pto implements regularly i would look to rebuild my old clutch and hace it on standby as i got a used assembly years ago when mine failed. ( gramps beat the shaft up bad by not having short enough shaft when raising 3pt brush hog up) if i had spare clutch ready i could swap it out in say 20 minutes. This year went bad coming home my 7.3 powerstroke i believe now has a hole in a piston

Want to more about screen material. In your opinion Tim what don't the Hydro transmission's not do well?
Hydro is not as good for ground engaging hard pulling tools like plows.
What it boils down to if you like mowing get the smaller tractor and cutter if you hate mowing get the bigger cutter and tractor😊🚜😎

Forgive me, I don’t see every video you make. Could you speak to how the cutter has faired since you started using it? Also do some videos on the overall condition of the underside.
I have a 6’ and I’m cutting 25acres 6 times a season. It’s taking too long, and the cutter I have (brand new just 2 years ago) is already on its 3rd stump jumper.
Yes the property is rough, but I’m thinking g that the pan design (different manufacture) is part of the reason for some of the issue.
My blades can swing so far up that they hit the deck. Even with new blades, carrier and bolts. It’s first day it had already done it.
Anyways. I’m really thinking Rhino and want to go to the TS12 to get as close as possible to the 15’ width.
I know the TS series uses the ramped pan design have you had any issues with it?
If your budget allows. You might consider the new tougher 12’ Rhino cutter. I believe it is the 4125. It is heavier and tougher than the TS10 or TS12. If you are having issues with your existing cutter not being tough enough, the 4125 will solve them!
Answering your question, we have shown the underside of the TS10 quite frequently. We have had no problems with it. I’m still using original blades.
I have a couple of tiny dents in the deck where a rock or chunk has been thrown upward into it, but nothing serious.
Even the smaller Rhinos are built tougher than the competition.

The grill cover material would be a benefit for the 1025 One would not have to open the hood to get the screen out.
