I highly doubt that the perpetrator's motives were altruistic here, but there is certainly a case to be made for the utility of forcing airports to invest in new procedures for preventing this sort of thing. What if these drones were in fact designed, and piloted, for the purpose of committing acts of terror? Perhaps there will be less of a threat in the future because of the superficial (yes superficial, time and money are valuable, but they're nothing compared to the value of life) damage the perp caused. Unpopular opinion, but governments often have to be shown the threat before investing money to find a solution.
@@lancewalker2595 Honestly I've been waiting for that to happen. Right now enforcement of rules on drones is pretty lax and this shows how hard it is to enforce. Once there's a terrorist attack carried out with an amateur done in a western nation, it'll be a whole new world for drone operators.

I keep thinking that as cars become more automated, that not only could they be hijacked remotely to go to a different destination as many people have seen in Sci-Fi movies. They could be remote controlled with bombs or explosives at zero risk to the person/group doing the terrorism, off a cliff, into a crowd of people.
Just look at 007 movies where Bond drove an armored car using a smartphone, while not real at the time. Just as people took the example of Star Trek and that helped people create tablets and such, other people may take that idea and use things to cause harm.
So best to take this example of drones over an airport and develop jamming, or small scale anti-air for these drones, even as far as some type of drone vs drone system because people could likely shield for preventing disruption. Unless people can see in 3rd person, you could "sneak up behind" another drone or have a high speed interceptor type of alternative that just crashes into the rogue drone breaking it.
Just firing from the hip, I'm guessing that the drone operators are conspiracy nutjobs looking for evidence of Chem spraying planes.
On the plus side, ads are working. On the other hand, they are trying to sell me drones. Not sure how to feel.

Some people just like to complain, there's a Sally-type on every street. For instance there's a dude that lives by my local park, which is fairly big and holds a lot of activities and such. Constantly calls the Rangers and Police on fairly normal everyday stuff because of "noise". Dude moved in 6 months ago, the parks been there for near 100 years. Similarly my cities Motorsport venue ended up being closed down and moved because of people like that, again, the Motorsport venue had been there far longer than they had. Happens a lot to taverns, pubs, and clubs as well.

I could understand if you had been living in that house before the airport was built and all of a sudden there’s planes waking you up, but Gatwick’s been around since the 1930s.

The thing is that many airports in the world have grown A LOT the past years. So people who could handle the noise some time ago maybe can't handle it anymore. Besides, moving might be easy if you have money. Often there's not a lot of choice if you don't have it.

Xavier Rodrigues we have the same problem here in Ontario. The largest amusement park was built pretty much outside the main city. Then tons and I mean tons of houses were built around the park. Now homeowners are trying to get the park closed because of noise and the traffic it brings.
Like people are idiots. You pick where you decide to live, don’t complain what’s already there.
I also had these thoughts.... Typically those houses are sold for cheaper to compensate for the noise issues. So they get a discount and then complain about it and want something done. When you bargain hunt, you get some lesser quality items.

It’s interesting that the Miss Universe piece didn’t mention the American contestant posted a video of herself, the Australian, and Columbian contestants mocking the Cambodian contestant who could not speak English. This is huge story in Japan, especially with women. They’re calling her racist and ignorant. They’re disgusted that anyone would mock someone who cannot speak English. People who cannot speak a foreign language themselves expecting this from others should take a hard look themselves. Coincidentally, Miss USA did not do well this year. The woman complaining about aircraft noise is annoying. If you MAKE THE CHOICE to live near a busy airport- then there will obviously be noise. No duh. I live near JFK airport which is larger than Gatwick- and the planes are part of the community. We don't complain because we chose to live here. If you don't like the airplane noise, don't move near the airport. The airport gives too much economic growth to the area to be taken away.

They proboably also got that place for an affordable price coz of the airport and they then got used to the Lifestyle and would never consider moving smwhere else coz for the same price they get much lower class houses.

The house may have been cheap when the bought it, but I'm pretty sure if they would have shopped around a bit they could have found a nice house for around the same price. It's not the airport or the people that are flying home for the holidays, as she has stated if people didn't fly there would be no noise, but it is her and her family's fault for buying that house.

My question is why are people trying to help illegal immigrants into the country? That DIRECTLY hurts regular immigrants who have been waiting to get into the country and get citizenship. We have a system in place for a reason, funding people in the hope they circumvent that system is batshit crazy and counterintuitive to the people who are trying to immigrate honestly.

I'm Mexican, most people here don't really care about the wall, but I will say the president underestimates the ingenuity of desperate people looking for a better life. A wall ain't gonna stop them, it just seems like a massive waste of money when they could surely invest on something more effective to protect their borders.

a Gatwick affected person here: I’ve been traveling around Europe solo for the past 7 weeks, and I was set to fly home yesterday around 1pm out Gatwick. My airline didn’t tell me anything about the delays, I heard about it on the news in the morning. I decided to head to the airport, and it was obvious the second I got there that my flight wouldn’t be taking off. thousands of people sitting on the ground, asking for information, trying to get answers... a ton of concession stands were running out of food and the employees all looked incredibly stressed. Luckily I have a friend to stay with in London, but this whole situation is still really strange and disappointing. I don’t think I’ll be able to make it to California to spend Christmas with my family because flight’s from other airlines are just all too expensive. Not sure what I’ll do, but I do think I have a personal vendetta against drones now.

He adopted 2 new cats since, but an acquaintance took them away. No legal action has been taken yet. The guy is only 15, I'm afraid he wouldn't get much. Even though animal cruelty is a huge sign of later offences towards humans.

We had a problem with drones near my home a few years ago when a wild fire was going. Someone was piloting drones in the airspace that fire fighting planes and choppers were trying to fly in order to drop retardant. They had to ground the planes for 3 days because every time the planes got close, the drone would go up. It was pretty bad, but they never caught the pilot.

In regard to the crowd funded border wall, at first I laughed at the obvious absurdity of trying to raise 1 billion dollars for anything, but then I stopped to appreciate the idea of a crowdfunded democracy. In an interesting way it seems like a very pure and modern form of politics, as whatever the people want and are willing to pay for is ultimately what they get; the people represent themselves. Although, I do recognise the clear dangers of such a system with potentially disastrous consequences, such as the side stepping of political processes, joke proposals becoming successes, and policies being made without clear considerations being made toward other countries, and the ripple effects such actions would create. These in addition to granting the ultra rich the ability to propose, fund, and approve politics without any real limitations make such a system much to dangerous to even risk being allowed.
This is more of a oligarchy than a democracy. Rich people can practically do whatever they want, poor people are shit out of luck
In case you don't know, we do that everyday, in fact our ancestors did that too since currency exist. We call it: vote with your wallet. This is what Adam Smith told us about, centuries ago.

I live extremely close to Gatwick and it's been insane, I too have a drone, and when I fly, I ensure I get permission from Gatwick, I do hope they make a damn example of the people who caused all the chaos, it's people like this who make it difficult for respectful drone operators.
I love people putting money where their mouth is, regardless of their belief. I'm tired of people saying they want something done, yet they give no monetary or labor support... then they say everyone should pay for it not just them? why is that?
1. A wall wouldn't work.
2. The cost would exceed over 20 billion just to build. Billions more each year just to maintain.
If people want to throw their money away, that is their choice.

The airlines not being forced to refund tickets eliminates most if not all pressure to do something about the situation. If it were actually costing them millions of dollars, they'd have taken down the drone in minutes. This isn't rocket science, and it's ridiculous the situation still isn't under control. Going to repost what I left as a comment on the BBC's reporting on this incident:
Have another drone follow this one and see where it lands to charge.
Fly another drone into this drone.
Fire a laser a the drone.
Fire rubber bullets or paintballs at the drone.

Drones are so abundant nowadays it's disrespectful to call this an "extraordinary circumstance". I'm flying in a couple of days, and if my flight gets delayed because of a drone, I swear to god I'll purchase a drone myself and join with. You'd think every single airport would have the equipment to deal with this kind of stuff, and here we have the UK's 2nd busiest! So stupid.
As someone who is stranded because of the gatwick problem and I will miss christmas with my family, I hope they find this guy and make a really good example of him!
