Current college student here, about to head into my last year of my undergrad, something not touched on was how much of an absolute nightmare FAFSA has been this year. My university is well into the summer semester and financial aid package offers still have not been sent out because of how bad they fumbled FAFSA this year. I depend on my Pell Grant, scholarships, and student loans to put me through and I, like so many other students, have had to have difficult conversations with academic and financial advisors about needing to drop out for a year or more if my aid is delayed further or isn’t processed in time. I can only imagine going through that on top of entrance apps and exams. What a nightmare

Financial Aid officer here; students aren't alone in being worried about the state of FAFSA. My trade school is year-round with starts monthly and I'm not sure how I'm even supposed to go about helping our incoming students whose aid is crossing into the new award year in July. The information that's been released to our school has done nothing but confuse myself and my colleagues in regards to how to award Pell. 90% of our students need aid or they can't afford school and our programs cost less than $20k each. I can't even imagine how troubling this situation is for students attending the extremely expensive universities and colleges. USDE needs to get it together. Soon.

As a high school senior, I agree that FAFSA's been a nightmare. Fortunately, financial aid wasn't the most important factor in my college decision, but if it was, I'm not sure what I'd do, since it's after May 1st (the deadline to commit to most colleges) and I still don't know how much federal aid I'll get. To make matters even more confusing, some state schools have extended their decision deadlines to May 15th or even June 1st, whereas private schools have kept their deadlines the same.
P.S. this was after I had a lot of trouble even filling out the form in the first place

My family is from Michocan and they're terrified. Whenever we travel to visit all we hear are the warnings and how crimes and the cartels violence has gone up.
My cousin was pulled over and held at gun point by these people he's just a teen and he now refuses to leave his room since the incident, he's terrified. It's scary to even travel to neighboring cities because you never know what could happen. We got stopped once by them and we held our breath as my father and uncle handed them whatever they had and we luckily made it out safe but not without the mental and emotional scars. For the 1st time ever I've chosen not to go and visit. I want to go so desperately but it just isn't safe anymore. All I can do is hope and pray that change will come, and that the corrupt people in office who get paid off get whatever recompense they deserve.

I'd like to make road trips across the country but I'm too scared to leave my "safe bubble". It's not just corruption within Mexico's government, but ours as well. I mean, we are their number one customer. If the United States actually wanted the cartels gone, it would happen tomorrow. The "war of drugs" not only funds entire agencies, it gives politicians, feds & local police lucrative side hustles. Nobody in power wants to give up their tax-free cash, especially the CIA. Americans either need to give up their drugs or aggressively push for decriminalization. Mexico is our neighbor & it's beyond shameful that we are complicit in something that brings so much suffering. Sadly, we have no shame.

The fact that bodycam footage again showed off their incompetence, with witnesses as well, and trying to play "oh well he had a gun herpaderp" when it was pointed down, tried saying "he responded" when not once do you hear him, and as mentioned by his girlfriend, he simply heard loud banging, and probably thought it was a home invasion. In addition to everything that is happening right now, HS Seniors who graduate in 2024, like me lol, had to deal with the pandemic as a freshman. Online classes and loss of resources to counselors meant some students' first year into high school would negatively impact them for the rest of high school. That happened to me because I didn’t learn about the existence of AP/ On-ramps classes until the beginning of my Sophomore year meaning I could only take them in Junior and Senior, which severely hurt my class rank since I was only taking advanced classes. I was eventually able to reach a high rank by taking only College level classes for the next two years but I lost the chance of getting auto admission into UT Austin since I got top 10% and you need to be top 6% to get it.

One more thing about AfD: they are not subtle about their intentions! On 25 November 2023, a group of right-wing extremists met at the Adlon Mansion on Lake Lehnitz in Potsdam, Germany. At the event, Martin Sellner, an Austrian right-wing extremist presented a plan for the deportation (called "remigration" by Sellner) of certain parts of the German populace, namely asylum seekers, foreigners with a residence permit, and "non-assimilated" German citizens. The meeting was attended by members of the German right-wing populist party AfD, the mainstream centre-right party Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Werteunion (a German conservative political association), and the far-right Identitarian movement, among others. The meeting was exposed by the investigative journalism organization Correctiv, which published its findings on 10 January 2024.

Dog breeder and currently a groomer here:
You can absolutely dye your dog’s fur, whenever it’s a chow chow or a shih tzu (known as shit tzu for the amount of time they will take a dump on you during grooming)
It’s just about doing it safely, if you use human dye on them it’s going to give them skin disease and rashes, because our hair dye is not necessarily meant to be on the skin for long periods of time (my credentials on that one is the fact that despite being dark haired (black, south East Asian) I currently have bright pink hair and is planning on going royal blue in a couple of months) dog skin is a lot more sensitive than human scalp.
If you want to dye your dog’s fur I recommend either doing a lot of research on skin safe, or specifically dog hair dye. Or pay the exorbitant fee for having a groomer dye them. I don’t dye dogs, specifically because I think it’s weird and a little too much like as if they’re toys, not living animals. I do a lot of things for animals, including bathing and grooming cats (got the scars to prove that one) but dyeing is where I personally draw the line. I don’t think it’s wrong if a groomer does it I just don’t want to do it myself. I like my dogs in it’s “natural” hair colour

As well, why call back the Sun Bear thing when it was verified that it was indeed a Sun Bear, and just that when a Sun Bear stands like that they look strangely human in form? This is the kind of charged way of telling a smear story Fox News does. It's tacky and piss poor journalism IMO. For all we know considering the lack of good reporting on it, it is a cheeky joke that the zoo puts on that has been lost in translation and anti-China American biases. Despite all this, their popularity among the general public continues to grow.
It is even more alarming, that in other countries such as France or Italy, the far right is gaining increasing support as well.

Speaking just from my experience in the capital of that state, you can definitely feel the difference. The news are more gruesome and frequent. It feels unsafe in certain areas where it was once safe and there's just a general unease about the whole situation. Election time has always been dangerous in Mexico, but cartels have never been a focus in Chiapas up until now. Not to say that you'll be targeted if you are out and about, you just have to constantly be aware of your surroundings and which areas to avoid - again this is just in the capital city, I hear it is much more bleak in small towns

So what are the alternatives aside from the US coming and solving the problem for you? Because that seems to be the only solution, Mexico and SA are not changing for the better, they're getting worse. And cartels are being greatly enabled by trade, yet we have no problems putting sanctions on other nations until they behave properly. Why are we putting sanctions on Russia when Mexican cartels are doing far worse to people, and literally being enabled to do so with the money flowing into the country? I don't see any solution coming from the people themselves, people like you and your family are powerless to stop cartel regimes. An external force is likely going to have to be the answer. Any time someone local does anything they'll be bought off or killed, it seems to only be a matter of time.
We however don't have those same loyalties or risks and it sounds like we're the only ones who can realistically help you. Which would help the US as well because then millions of people wouldn't be flooding into the country trying to escape. When millions of good Mexicans leave, it makes it that much harder for the ones who were left behind to make any changes. Since the people would clearly rather leave than fight, foreign intervention seems like the only answer.
Becoming a US territory and falling under it's protection could be a solution as well. You'll still be independent. You'll still have your own culture in tact. But you'll be afforded the privileges that territories receive. And if cartels try to rise again it'd be on the US army to stop that from happening instead of the people themselves like yourself and your sister. You and your sister shouldn't have to die fighting when we could easily march in there, wipe out these scum and establish an actual democracy. It's been done countless times.
South Korea is a free nation because of the US.
Japan surrendered and the US let them live how they like.
If the West surrendered do you think the Japanese would have let us live how we like? No.
When the US had power in Iran, people had more equal rights in the 60s than they do now.
Women wore what they wanted and went to school without fear.
Hong Kong was free because of Britain. Unfortunately the British contract ended and they no longer enforce anything. Now without Western intervention, HK is slowly falling to the CCP.
Not saying the West is perfect or free of war crimes. Just saying it sounds like the only solution that's realistic at the moment. There are plenty of examples in history. Our taxes are already being spent by the billions anyway fighting drug trafficking, dealing with illegals etc, and every other secondary expense surrounding these issues. I'd much rather stop the root of the problem now, to stop the much greater financial blood drain in the long run.

I am not a person of color so that was not a factor in my application. However, many of the schools I applied to had a special supplemental question that would ask more specifically about how your background and community affected your life. The whole process made me feel like a chicken with its head cut off. Everyone college application officer, guidance counselor, or anyone else had their own opinion. As someone who struggles with depression, was misdiagnosed with an anxiety disorder, and had undiagnosed ADHD until it was diagnosed and I was given medicine for it only in the latter half of my junior year, if colleges considered my SAT score over my GPA I would have no doubt gotten into my school of choice. However because of this I’ve been stuck struggling to figure out what I wanted to do at a community college where my choices are very limited. Had I gone to the university of my choosing and gotten the freedom of moving out and living in a dorm I’m confident I’d be in a different situation than I am in now.
As it stands, I’m basically starting over because I switched majors, I have very little outside social interaction since all my friends have moved away, and my GPA is bad because I tried too persistently to stick through a field of study I didn’t enjoy despite me acing every exam. The fact colleges stopped looking at testing scores has screwed me over.
It’s not just about excelling despite bad circumstances, some people test better than they do the work and some people do the work better than they test. Standardized testing is a double edged sword.

Ya.. also I teach public school in Canada and this modern push for "everyone being tested in a way that works for them" or whatever you want to call it doesn't work. The marks are pretty much fudged all over and some students and parents have been absolutely fleeced by it thinking that once their kid got the right "supports" they were suddenly a genius. Nope they suddenly didn't have to do anything close to grade level work and were automatically given a 70% or higher. Now, I am not saying this is happening at every single school but it is for sure happening at many schools. As our public education system has less teeth it is far more fair to base entrance on a test than on other factors like extra curricular that students actually don't have control over. There are way better ways to diversify a school that aren't letting people in who aren't quite ready and then letting them drown.

The overwhelming evidence regarding the SATs is that they actually increase diversity in university accepted applications. If so, that makes sense to me.
If I was a college admissions person and saw an app come across my desk of someone who had not great grades but was in a poorer school district, and scored well on the SAT's, I would be like "oh ok, so they're a smart kid who suffered the negative effects of poverty on academic performance"

My mom used to work for the NYS Education Department. One year they changed how some of the state scholarships were handed out so they were based on grades instead of standardized tests. One of the downstate schools gave all their kids straight A's.
Standardized tests aren't perfect, but they are a useful tool, when taken with other factors, in comparing students. Personally, I always tested well, but because of my ADHD I got lousy grades. My college career was like a yoyo. There were brief periods where I managed to get focused but long stretches where I couldn't. I'm a good example of how standardized tests aren't great metrics.

Hi Phil, Academic Advisor of 6 years for an honors program at a state school, here- I have two thoughts:
1)On testing and admissions: In honors, we view the student as a holistic being and have made a point of offering multiple essay options. This means even if they don't necessarily show the test scores, they can show us how they can excel in other ways. They even recognized that some students prefer an artistic outlet instead of a written one and offer a video essay option. This means we take all kinds of students.
    2) Test Scores, class placement, and STEM fields: before honors I worked with folx in the STEM fields. When my uni went test optional, it created confusion for both the advisors and the students. Instead of ACT and SAT, now everyone had to take internal tests to place which math, chemistry, physics, etc. We weren't even able to use the standardized test scores for placement once they went test optional. This meant some students who had paid to retake (sometimes multiple times) BECAUSE they struggle with tests now had to take some other internal test with no clear study guide or even proctoring. It made all parties frustrated and meant that many students were put into a course that wasn't necessarily appropriate for their levels. There has to be a middle ground. At least in my current office we just accept EITHER option, but it's a frustrating situation all around. The career fields want the diversity, so we know we want the diversity (with or without affirmative action), but we need to know where to PLACE the students into their courses. That is where the test scores become a problem internally.
Thanks! ❤ Love seeing my field talked about in a thoughtful way.

As someone in your position, how would you feel if standardized testing was miraculously eliminated entirely? It seemed like that was the situation for the most part until recently with many schools bringing the requirement back. It just feels like an extremely unfair way to compare students considering how pay-to-win it has become with prep courses and the fee of the test itself

    • @EvieHayden
      @EvieHayden 16 днів тому

@@WOLF7356 if the tests were eliminated entirely, it would be fine, but the problem is that something would come in to replace them in order to accurately place folx into their maths and science. That is the part that is an issue for many internally. We can't place someone without a benchmark to know where they fit. If we put someone into the wrong math class (say we put them in a calculus class that is 5 credit hours but they were actually only ready for PreCalc which is only 3 hours) they pay for those 5 credit hours. If they weren't actually ready for that math, they've paid for a class that is significantly more expensive and then they will have to pay not only to REPEAT that class, but probably to take the one before. This is a struggle of capitalism at the end of the day. Do we pay upfront for the tests to place? Or do we pay for 13 credit hours (calc 2x and PreCalc 1x) in order to get the same thing done? It's significantly cheaper in most cases to pay for the testing. I think it's a struggle for all involved. Eliminate testing and replace it with assessments..... That's what happened internally. It's the only choice.

Hi, high school counselor here. I tell my students to go to college where they feel comfortable and where their major is offered. Only a handful of kids/families are hung up on the prestigious nature of the college. Most colleges, including Cornell are remaining test optional and review apps holistically. Engineering programs almost always require high math standardized test scores because one should be able to do math well regardless of the testing platform. Schools look at rigor of courses especially and the essay. They also see the teacher/counselor recommendations and the extracurriculars. They look for longevity in clubs and the ability to maintain solid grades while taking challenging courses. As far as mentioning race in essays, it just needs to be relevant to circumstances, and not your only defining feature.

    I'm a high school teacher.
While I think that standardized tests are dumb, I still give my students the best chance to succeed in them through training them in strategies. As such we typically double other high schools pass rates in Mathematics.
All of that said, whether or not colleges take scores into consideration shouldn't matter that much. A more important issue is how much value we put on specific schools. High school students lose their minds trying to get into schools for the prestige of being invited there. It's one of the dumbest things we reward with praise. We're congratulating a combination of scores that rarely shows differences between hard work, so much more than it does differences between parents financial status. Stanford will tell you it's a better university than say Cal Berkeley, but the difference in education outside of religious schools is minimal. If a job won't take you in without the level of prestige based on a college you went to, then they don't deserve to have quality employees.
The whole process of encouraging students to apply for stupidly expensive schools for the prestige of saying they went there, is not something I choose to participate in. The smartest people I know started at Junior Colleges, and left their universities with half the amount of bills.

On the one hand I was very fortunate enough to score well and was one of the main reasons I was able to attend and graduate from a top university, so I benefitted from it. On the other, as a latino from a low income family, I understand the hardships people face when it comes not being able to afford test prep courses or getting help from your family when your first generation. The essay I always felt was the equalizer which if written well would show the resilience and ambition a student had to continue their education which tends to be connected to a persons cultural background. Now with the supreme courts decision it’s given the college application process more complicated than it already was for low income underrepresented groups

As someone who went through the college admissions process this year I'm glad were talking about it. But I think another important factor which caused a lot of people to struggle this year is the amount of people applying to college. Every school I applied to this year had record numbers of applicants and they increased in the thousands from last year. So not only is the admissions incredibly complicated with the essay and financials problems, but you're also competing with more and more people causing a lot of people who would get into these schools getting waitlisted or flat out rejected.

I'm a tutor. I've helped a lot of gen z kids get into college. And when I started getting way more involved in their applying process, and not just the testing and tutoring for classes, the difference between the expectations of gen z vs millenials my age (and older, as I was in a weird program that let me take the SATs in 8th grade, so I took the "old" SATs before the added essay, then the "new one" with the essay, so I know how different those two tests were, and how they differ from now) is staggering and depressing. What was seen as "really great" but basically a luxury for students like me is now seen as expected. The classes that are expected to have been taken before entering college are often way more advanced, and due to how poorly we treat/pay teachers, they weren't coping well with the levels they were teaching when I was in school, and I was tutoring the majority of my classmates in math and physics while in school. The need for tutors is even greater now, but most cannot afford them, and compared to pre-pandemic students, kids do not have the same attention spans, studying skills, ect., to get the most from tutoring when they can afford it. The kids out here are fucking exhausted, and dancing around their identity in an essay that is already stressful as hell is a leap backwards, and is just hurting them more.

What you actually have been helping are millennials my friend. The man who invented the term itself cited it goes to 04. Which makes far more sense than the definition the insecure millennial internet bloggers have evolved. They were shamed so hard over the past 20 years they started classifying themselves as gen z. And ever since every couple years another year is shaved off the definition of millennials. Bloggers are citing 94 as the beginning now, that's how insane it's getting. And people lap it up because apparently we've forgotten as a society to not take blogs and opinion pieces as facts.

From the get go, you choose what you want to study (Computer Science as an example) then you follow whatever the curriculum says.
Of course there are nuances depending on the college/university and I have friends who were waitlisted and said they experienced having college interviews. On the college admissions story-
My friend was sending out applications all year and when it came to her essays for schools like USC and UCLA she would stop and ask me if mentioning her race was ok.
I had no idea about the admissions climate at the time but i assured her that anything that is important to her story, like being asian and adopted and how that's affected her life, was important. I told her, "youre not playing a card, you're telling a story about how you overcome obstacles. Knowing you, it's integral to your life story, and you shouldn't be afraid to talk about it."

Many of them are afraid that with the new regulations they will be admonished for centering their essays around their lived experiences and hardships and, instead, are incentivised to "spin a yarn" and bullshit an experience (less to do with race and identity) rather than telling their actual story. I’m a bit of a bad example because I’m white and I wrote my essay about The Beatles and their impact on my relationship with my family… but test scores were definitely something I worried about! I did well on the SAT but I didn’t even attempt the ACT because science isn’t really my strong suit. It was nice to know that I didn’t have to submit those scores, so when it came time to take the actual test there was much less pressure. I think I did better because it wasn’t so nerve wracking. I worry about my younger sibling and cousins who are currently in the college application process or will be in the future, though, because I don’t know how I’ll be able to give them advice considering their circumstances are so different from mine. For anyone who’s going through this process or will be soon, I’ll say something my mom told me often when I was applying: you will end up where you are meant to be, because you will make the best of wherever you are.

Standardized tests set a bar for students to strive for. On the other hand, a student’s experience can 100% impact how they test which impacts their future. The school system is broken and pendulum swings from too lax totoo stringent so often that students in the middle get screwed.

Exactly. I for one am now seeing way too many grammatical errors. I’m not speaking typos. I’m talking about simple words used incorrectly, that common teaching should’ve done years ago. A new example I see way too often is this/these used wrong all the time. It’s quite sad really. As well as the typical to/two/too, & there/their/there. I still use two spaces after every period. I don’t know. That’s what I was taught in English/writing classes. Anyway, take care. ✌️

See that’s just insane that you aren’t allowed to fail a student any longer! I remember that was something that kept kids going. They had something to look forward to. They became nervous if their grades were failing. It was a HUGE deal back in the day. Sure there’s always been the certain kids that didn’t care. But if I was making a “D” in one class, I remember distinctly how I felt. I knew I had to buckle down. Or, I’d potentially be held back. Everything seems so backwards present day! It’s legitimately crazy! Take care.

He cooked on the financial points but he barely addressed the Bobby Lee thing which is by far the biggest part Logan’s still an awful person and an L sadly.

You mean George walking off the podcast? I still think George was lame for that. Whether Logan is a bad friend or not.

You copy-pasted this from someone else on Sensitive Society's video. Which you also commented on twice.

@@tumatauenga6433off camera? Yeah that sucks then. Bobby does get away with some stuff he shouldn’t just cause he’s famous. Sick name btw, don’t see many māori god usernames floating around.

Nah on camera apparently they edited the episode to make Bobby look good and George look bad. At least thats what was said on George's podcast. Personally I think logan gets a bad run from haters simply because he's logan paul. I think it's unfair to run a man's whole world through the mud because you thought his videos were cringy, which is 100% the case with logan. But if this Bobby Lee story is true THAT is messed up.
You from NZ? Not many outsiders recognize maori words yet alone deities from the pantheon

That whole zoo situation being blown completely out of proportion, I for one can't fathom the Chinese mistreating a dog, crazy

I mean despite your sarcasm, it is blown out of proportion. I get that bashing China is fun, but why call dye paint? It's not paint, paint would be way worse. China does way worse than this, report on that.

Look at me, mom, I made it into a PhillyD video! Woo!
I would have talked about the Microsoft thing, but I’ve already done my Twitter rant about it and I’ll just leave it with that because thinking about their recent decisions really infuriates me and also bums me out as someone who has really wanted to get into game dev stuff for a while now

I got accepted in multiple ivy league schools over the pandemic when test scores were optional. Being surrounded by classmates whose parents paid thousands for summer sat/act prep classes made me feel like my scores -- and subsequently, myself -- just weren't good enough, and I chose not to submit them. Of course I would have a much harder time getting the perfect 1600/36 scores they did when I only had old prep books from the public library to self study.
Putting aside the studies connecting income levels and test scores, the mental toll less advantaged students are burdened with is so, so demoralizing. When it seems like everyone around you can pay to win in one of the most stressful and consequential periods of your life, what hope do you have? What point is there in even applying? Test optional allows students to redirect the admission officer's focus to the aspects of themselves that they are most confident in/proud of, while simultaneously allowing those who tested well to benefit from the inclusion that information.
I want to highlight that I had a pretty good SAT score (something like 1470-90) but had so little confidence in it when I compared myself to my classmates that I chose not to submit it. Test optional isn't a way for dumb students to sneak their way in; rather, it provides a pathway for students with less access to resources to gain a sense of confidence and self-assurance critical to presenting the best version of yourself on your college application.
If you're applying in the coming years, best of luck!
