A video just came out of a Saudi official in a meeting with some Thai members (Not clear if they're security or other officials) in which the Saudi official blatantly says "Instead of her passport you should have taken her phone." To which everyone in the room reacts by LAUGHING. This is disgusting. She was saved BECAUSE she had her phone so what they're essentially saying and laughing at is that oh why did you let her have her phone so she could get away with it?

@bigbenhoward I'm not sure as to how true that is (about it being co-owned by Saudis) since I haven't done any research on it, but even if it was, I don't think Twitter would risk a huge backlash from people by doing something so out there. And if it had, we'd be hearing a LOT more about it. This is the first time I'm heading about it.

People failing to realize that the reason for the Saudi Arabia story comes from a failure of separation between church and state, not because the religion in question is Islam. Back when the Catholic church held political power in Europe, people were also punished for believing anything else. The reason Christianity seems to be less intense now is because of separation of church and state. Otherwise, I cannot imagine what Evangelist mega church pastors would do.

This woman wants asylum, unlike people in the caravan who aren't applying in the first country they enter (which is legally how it's supposed to be done) and they didn't do that in Mexico. They didn't do it in America either - they tried to pass the border and bypass registering. Undoubtedly for a lot of them, because they have criminal records and even more commonly because they simply don't give a crap about our values and want to take from us. Work and food stamps with outpaying taxes? No, this woman just wants to not be murdered and live peacefully. I hope she remains safe, which ever country helps her.

I’d like to say, as a state employee of the food stamp office (DFR) here soon food stamps will be closed down. As Medicaid and Cash Assistance are more state ran, Medical Insurance and assistance to pay bills should be fine.... as long as your income and resources are under a certain limit. But yes, money to pay for food for those that don’t have enough to feed themselves will be closing soon which is very sad. There are many out there, from young adults, the elderly, disabled, etc. in which they need that money.

my mom works for the IRS, i went home for the holidays and she pretended it didn’t bug her because she was glad she got to spend time with me. when it hit the 2 week mark every time she heard about it on the news she started to cry. everyone who doesn’t know me or my mother has given us the simple “stop crying/complaining, it’s happened before” and yes, we both know it has happened before quite well. it hurts me to see my mother cry over the fact that she might not have a job for months. i was telling my mom before i had to come back for college that i really didn’t want to go back to work (i support myself by myself while i am away at college) and she told me “at least you can go back to work. no child wants to see their parent have to go through something like this.
I wonder if all the "non essential" government employees quit at the same time it would get the point across that this is bullshit and it needs to change. That you cant just have a government shut down whenever you want because someone isnt getting his way. Holding peoples pay and jobs hostage.

@@frostfang1 That would actually make the current administration happy. They believe that the way to make government smaller is to just not hire people. But Congress has given these agencies jobs to do and unless the government is willing to tell people that the FAA isn't going to keep the skies safe, NASA's going to stop doing R&D for the private sector, the CDC isn't going to make sure we don't eat contaminated lettuce, the FDA's going to stop ensuring that pharmaceutical companies adhere to testing standards before releasing drugs, etc., then we still need people to do those jobs. Until Americans are willing to accept all that and more, they'll still need federal employees and contractors.
I never understood the whole government shutdown thing. In any other business, if the people in charge did such a shitty job that the whole thing had to be shut down for even a few days everyone responsible would be fired.
If the government wants to shut down? Let the senate shut down without pay until they can come to a conclusion. Let other government workers work with pay...now.
Let all of the Senators, Representatives, the President, and President's Cabinet get shut down with no pay. Hunger is a powerful motivator, and while Trump might be able to fall back on his personal money to keep fed, it'll get mighty annoying when all of his advisors start moaning. At the same time it would even motivate Congress to put their differences aside for the sake of food.
It would goad at least one of the two sides to move, if not maybe encourage an actual compromise.
the problem is they haven't set up the funding for it, which while yes I would think they shouldn't get paid in this time, they still need to be careful with money not like they don't have a lot but because you can spend a lot.

I'm a TSA officer at JFK. I still live with my family, so I've been able to save money prior to the shutdown, so I haven't had it so bad, but majority of my co-workers, especially the ones with kids have been forced to stretch their last paychecks in order to pay for essentials. Some people won't even be able to make it to work soon because they can't afford gas or a MetroCard. Tons of people have definitely been calling out in order to focus on or look for second jobs, and despite what the white House claims, it has totally been affecting the screening process. Funny enough, despite all this, management is still looking to hold everyone accountable, threatening to write up officers for taking vacation or calling out consecutively.
You and your coworkers have my greatest sympathies. I'm directly affected too, but like you, I have circumstances that will cushion the blow. I'm sorry your management is being so awful. Could they terminate people for those things? Here's hoping ALL our elected leaders get their sh*t together and end this shutdown soon.
I'm in the same boat as you. I live with my fanily but able to stretch my money a bit further than my coworkers. As far as screening, it hasn't affected it. Callouts have happened but everyone is sick over here.
I work at PHX. I work w/CBP on international flights as aircraft security. It sucks because a lot of flights have been delayed due to not enough people showing up. Flights can't leave unless they've been swept and approved by the pilot. If we're understaffed takes twice as long to sweep. An A320 with a crew of 6 takes 45 minutes to check. With a crew of 2 it takes almost two hours. -.-

At any given time, people in the private sector are facing what you are, however, when they get laid off or fired because of financial setbacks they won't get back pay when they find work or return to a job so I have NO SYMPATHY.

My father is a Nonessential employee on furlough because of the shutdown. Out family has gone threw tons of these shutdowns, and we are fortunate enough to be stable enough to not be affected for the time being. I’m not sure what may happen if this goes on for multiple months like it is threatened. My thoughts are with the people that are really suffering from the furlough/ shutdown ❤️

The outstanding debt of the US is less concerning to me at the moment then the fact hundreds of thousands of people aren’t getting paid and don’t have jobs at the moment. This isn’t acceptable, no matter what country you live in. I think the government should be much more transparent, I just think giving people the security of a pay check and a job should be held over the construction of a wall and the satisfactions of empty claims that fluctuate egos. There are big problems right now, and they have been there for a long time, but nothing can change until areas of the government, like where my father works, can be back in operation.

Man, Saudi Arabia terrifies me. I have nothing against specific religions - people can believe in whatever they want as long as it doesn't cause harm, but oppressive theocracies are so twisted. I'm honestly so glad to have been lucky enough to never have been born in one.

They warned against it, most notably in George Washington's Farewell Address. But just like every other part of that wonderful piece, America ignored it (seriously, read it, we failed Washington in every way possible). And look where we are now.

Something that people arent talking about is the issue with the IRS not processing tax return transcripts and non-filers statements that are needed for colleges to complete the verification process for financial aid (Title IV funding). I work at a college and we are all wondering how to move forward because the department of education wont allow us to take a signed 1040 tax return, but as of 12/22/18 the IRS has not processed tax return transcripts or non-filers statements. Students who are trying to finish a verification for 2018-2019 or 2019-2020 are stuck. Schools are trying to figure out how to move forward (kick students out for non-payment or carry the debt of the students)

Schools cannot complete a verification on an estimate. Federal regulations state that we cannot take a signed 1040 if the student is selected for verification. It is not acceptable documentation. We cannot disburse aid on a verification that is not complete. We are a low income school so we have a lot of non-filer students. The regulations state we must get a non-filer statement. We used to be able to take a signed 1040 and written non-filer, but that was stopped this year when the data retrieval tool was fixed for the FAFSA. They have discussed allowing the signed 1040 and written non-filer statement, but they havent given clarification yet.
