Well, in Uncle Dane's video: "You & Your Engineer", he shows that you can pick up a sentry while being Übercharged to have a technically invincible sentry.

I think a 75% decrease to self-damage would be fine, but totally free Sentry-Jumps for the cost of merely equipping Engineer's most versatile secondary (which you were probably gonna be using anyways) would be a little OP I think, even without the Shield. But at least with a 75% decrease, you can still do a few good Sentry Jumps/Sentry Boosts but you have to pace yourself and not get carried away or else you might find yourself way outta position with less than optimal health.
Honestly even a 50% decrease would probably be more than optimal.... or maybe even making it so the Engineer gets shielded from his own Sentry at the cost of metal whenever the Wrangler is equipped
Imagine being that medic ubercharging and suddenly an engineer falls out of the sky right in front of you and blocks your path while slapping his wrench against his hand unapprovingly. 4:53

I do believe you forgot one point about the Wrangler that's handy for the Engie. THE SENTRY MAKES NO NOISE WHATSOEVER. Unless you're making it fire, it, essentially, becomes Sentry Bond. That is, you can place it down around a corner, hid the laser dot, and wait for the enemy. Normally, whenever the sentry changes visual direction, it beeps, and when an enemy is within range, it beeps three times. However, with the Wrangler, it is quieter than a mouse. Enemies require visual confirmation within enemy-occupied zones and front lines. If they see an Engie, they can assume he has a nest somewhere. Once they see a sentry, then the Flight or Fight Response kicks in. They either go in guns blazing or retreat to a safe distance, waiting for backup. Audio ques from the sentry make it easier to identify its location without visual confirmation. But since the Wrangler silences the sentry, you can blow those dumb looks right off their stupid faces.
@Damsen Bonk is banned nearly everywhere outside of pubs and first party comp, and casual balance is moot because everybody religiously refuses to take it seriously.
Love the fact that you understand 'effective health.' I've never seen anyone else actually understand damage resistance properly, and calculate it properly.
Yeah, he's got a good mind for stuff like that. I really wish people would do more of that thinking when they talk balance, like instead of comparing numbers to numbers on true health and damage they should focus on Time-To-Kill and Effective Health of certain classes and weapons. Time-to-kill and Effective Health are often ignored when discussing balance in videogames for some reason, which baffles me because those are pretty much the two most important aspects of game balance. Yes, Risk vs Reward is also a cornerstone, but for most weapons, it's RvR is determined by a few things, and TTK should be one of them. If a weapon can chew through everyone's Effective Health with little effort and has a short TTK, it's overpowered.
I wish they remove alot of the invisible wall areas. I want to be able to place my stuff back on 2gorge second spawn. The quarter circle tower on gold rush and multiple balconies on upward :c
I feel like a good way to balance the shield without removing it would be to make it so that it has to power up, in a sense. So for example, when you first pull out the weapon, it has no shield, but having the century wrangled for a second or so gives it a a weak shield of sorts, and the longer you have the shield out the stronger it gets, which caps at the 66% that it’s at now. This makes it so that to get any defensive benefits from the wrangler, you have to commit to a defense of play style.
This is actually similar to my idea of a rebalance to the Wrangler's shield. I think they should just make it so that the Wrangler starts off with a 30% shield resistance to all incoming attacks instead of 66%. Then make it so that it's shield resistance increases by 1% per second. Finally make it so that the shield resistance increases by 2% per bullet you hit on an enemy and 6% per rocket hit to encourage Engineers to actually attack with the Wrangler instead of just abusing the shield. I think an upside of "50% faster switch-to speed" or just a 50% faster activation speed for the Wrangler should be added because of the downside just to make it easier to clutch with. Also remove the aim assist, it's just annoying.
@@Game-ne5nb 30% is still stupidly annoying and doesn’t fix the problem with the wrangler, it just makes the wrangler worse at its job. It’s a change that wouldn’t please anyone
@@NeoBoneGirl 30% makes the sentry have 300 health, that's pretty much the same as fighting a heavy, but this time a 125 health class is controlling it.

This is why I like and respect Dane: his love of Engineer as a class comes second to his love of the game. He’d rather see his favorite class nerfed if it makes for a better overall game and I find that really respectable.
@@birchpc 6's already bans the Wrangler. Highlander would still have the advantage of increased DPS and range, And the sentry can save itself from stickytraps with rockets pushback and bullet damage.
@@LeviForWaifu 6s bans next to fucking everything. They don't like any other class than the main 4 even playing. People don't recognize that the Wrangler is meant to excel when you're dealing with 1 enemy. Any coordinated team doesn't have a problem pushing through a sentry, infact in comp people usually use uber to push through the enemy team and destroying the sentry after. If you can't rescue ranger your sentry, it let's the enemy get a lot of momentum since you can't defend your hold without a sentry.
@@birchpc Wouldn't happen to have up voted your own comment, would you? They don't "not like" the other 4 playing, they're just not viable for long periods of time or outside their niche. Exactly as you said, sentries are a joke to any coordinated team, and minis are even laughable in pubs. Minis are the only viable option in 6s highly dynamic 5CP and it puts the team at a massive diasadvantage giving up one scout. Once Dragons Fury is unbanned pyro can be reasonably well used with Thermal Thruster, Sniper is common to see in chokes, Heavy on last holds, etc. In short, you react like most HL fanboys do and assume that 6's doesn't run your favorite class out of spite or anger to it. This is something Danes officially rebuked before. And I am a HL fanboy as Engineer/Pyro player. Yes, a sentry is a joke to any team with their monitors connected. It's meant to be that way. In 6s the 650 health is just absolutely unacceptable for the 3 players able to damage it effectively. The Wrangler is still a bit too powerful in Highlander as it enables infinite spyxhecks nullifying YER and other options, granting infinite range, and still being a braindead damage sponge nearly impossible to destroy with shield out without a spy. I main engineer. Trust me. I've considered this.
@@LeviForWaifu No I don't like my own comments, what are trying to say? I don't have a problem with them banning the Wrangler, it's just a stupid point to use 6s as an argument.
we need an animation now where the soldier and demoman are showing how far they can fling themselves then engie comes out of nowhere and easily beats them both and goes flying
Gaben: So basically I have an idea for a weapon that gives your sentry unlimited range and have it take less damage when equipped. Others: Nice! So what're the drawbacks? Gaben: ...
Also Ankle Dane with wrangler: *People mindlessly focusing on the sentry* Me with wrangler: *People focusing on me instead of the sentry rendering wrangler useless*
I tend to use the short circuit more than wrangler I see my sentry go down to 4-5 sticky bombs or rockets from multiple angles way more than I see a ubered heavy around the corner and that is fine sentry should go down to a Uber or else where is the balance And yet the short circuit negates a ubered soldier/demo as long as you have metal in dispenser while the sentry is active and applying knockback you can still heal it with rescue ranger
Plant can you blame them they know if they kill you first then the sentry wont activates in 3 seconds which is more then enough for to destroy the sentry
I definitely think that the Wrangler needs to be rebalanced as like you said, giving a Sentry over 600 health with the flick of a button isn’t really a balanced mechanic. I wouldn’t mind your suggestion of removing the shield in favour of giving you not taking damage from your Sentry but if we want to keep the shield, then I would suggest that after the shield takes enough damage, the shield breaks and can’t be reactivated until the Sentry gets destroyed or you die. I think this would make it more balanced overall. 9:24 *O O F*
Aight, everyone has their little stories, so here's mine: I was once in a 2fort server on casual, went engie, set up a nest on the first floor. But here comes the catch: The opposing team, the RED team, was offensive af, and was trying super hard to cap the last intel. So i took care of 'em. The frickin' bubble managed to tank multiple ubers, even if the uber target was a demo or a solider. I was also accompanied by a second engie, on the second floor. Then they went super rage mode, saying things like "remove the wrangler from your inventory", "engie presses 2 on their keyboard" and such. The arguments went on, and then the truth has been revealed to me. The RED team was bullying us, the BLU team, by, like i said, being super aggresive, and ruining the fun for us, and then i joined. By my context it seems like i was some kind of blessing to the BLU team, a punishiment to the RED team. Best part that they were so focused on destroying my sentry, a scout backcapped them twice and we won. All beacause of some TV remote.
To me, the wrangler is a weapon that further solidifies the engineer's soft counter. It reduces the awareness an engineer has while giving them buffs spies won't care much about.
Except manual control of the sentry gun which lets the Engineer completely delete Spies from existence faster than any other weapon (presuming he can catch them before they sap the gun)
@@emirwattabor6991 The most important factor however being knowing the spy is there, which the engineer will not if the spy is playing his cards right, and the engineer is busy, which is the case 90% of the time in a typical match.
@@tygonmaster That's not how that works. Giving something 66 % damage resist results in it taking 1/3rd damage, meaning someone has to deal 3 times as much damage to kill it, giving it 300% effective health, not 166%. 216*3=648.
This is so true. As someone who often abuses the Wrangler I can tell it shreds the enemy if correctly used. I lasted 3 ubercharges thrown at me by a medic and a heavy, dominated a two scouts and was killing demomen in the vent above me in the Intel room. It was on turbine. Never was OP since it makes you a stationary target. Its only powerful with: the right placement, a level 3 sentry, a reason to defend and a competent engineer.
They do the same with explosive spam by using airblast's massive hitbox and spammability as a band aid fix. Than sniper exists top with terribly balanced unlocks like jarate, the diamondback, vaccinator, scorch shot, concherer, etc.
Important note that you forgot to mention: Instead of the engineer pressing 2, the engineer has to be left alone for 30 seconds + in order to pull this off. One of the best things to deal with wrangled sentry: Spy sap Engineer is basically the proximity minefield of TF2, if you die to sentries is mostly due to you just walking into it, and as I've said countless times, everything is good against bad players. I think the Wrangler is fine as it is. Applying enough pressure will take either the engy or the sentry down. The sentry counts as a second player. So when you are 1v1 an engineer + his sentry, you are in reality 1v2 and you don't really win fights that are 2v1. If the sentry is being bullet sponged, that means it doesn't shoot, if it doesn't shoot it means you can walk forward and occupy the space and pressure the engineer. Bad players don't know this, but then again anything is good against bad players.
Bear in mind that the Engineer can also use teamwork just as the Medic can use teamwork. Meaning it really isn't that difficult for an Engineer to build his sentry nest if he's doing it in a sensible spot and has at least a few teammates nearby. The strat of sapping a sentry is also much harder when Engi's teammates are near, unlike in low-skilled environments. Meaning you're left with the whole "pushing into enemy sentry and doing 1000 damage versus just pressing 2". Anything you say about needing more teamwork or skill to counter the Wrangler can also apply to the Engineer and his own team for defending the Wrangled gun. Just sap the gun? Just use a Pyro to defend the gun. Just use a Heavy? Just snipe or shoot the Heavy. Just spam it from a distance? Just counter-spam the common sentry-sniping locations and airblast the projectiles. Is the gun being tanked and not shooting, so want take ground and pressure the Engineer? Get airblasted and get shot at by the gun again! It's a circular argument. Arguing "anything is good against bad players" or "get better at the game and you'll see" is just that, a circular argument. At the end of the day it just comes down to how easily the Engineer is able to get such power, and we have to consider what the Engineer gains versus what he loses. What does he lose for using the Wrangler? Not much at all. What does he gain? A lot. Which begs the question - Does Engineer need the Wrangler to be effective? Does the Pistol need a buff? I really don't think so. A regular unwrangled sentry gun is such a good tool for defense if it is properly maintained by you and teammates. If we look at the Engineer himself, what does he lose for gaining the ability to build things that no other class can? Among other downsides, he loses access to good secondary weapons, which almost every other class has access to. It's a form of counter-balancing. The Wrangler, in my opinion, is too strong to be a balanced Engineer secondary weapon because lacking good secondaries should be one of the downsides of Engineer, much like lacking 65 damage melee is a downside of Scout or how lacking hitscan is a downside of Demo. The Engineer has three good slots: His melee and his PDAs. He doesn't need his primaries and secondaries to be super amazing on top of that. The Wrangler is so strong that it could have been a primary slot item for the Engineer and I would have been more accepting of it. Because at least then, the cost of using the Wrangler would be much heavier. Literally making the Engi himself almost defenseless in exchange for a super sentry that acts as the main defense.
Any scenario boils down to a coordinated 2 against 1 sentry, all because you pressed 2 in response. Plus, the shield problem gets magnified when you add the rescue ranger. It's so easy to be left alone when you're far away from your gun pressing 2 and pumping healing bolts into your gun. The shield should not have the passive effect when the wrangler isn't being used.
@@MoreSeaweedMedleyDear you mean, thay suld remove the shield if the gun is not activ? What if thay made the shield directional. That whuld force the engie to look out in more than one direction, cuz the gun culd take DMG from a flank angle. It whuld make more options useable. Or mame the wrangler have a cooldown time, or the shield at some point can break and needs a recharge.
@@SolarLight I understand your "circular argument" with all of the class counters. I never play HL because I enjoy 6s alot more and therefore I can't say alot about what counters the wrangler 100% (Since wrangler is whitelisted in 6s ETF2L and UGC I'm not familiar with. Except for pub players using it) I find it to be true that scout is the best class ever, and if you are a great scout in 6s you will counter everything. I'd like to say the same here in HL. Imagine being a good demoman with a scout being flashed back and forth between you guys, with demoman focusing the wrangled sentry in this scenario & your scout blasting all of team RED which are all stacked up in this tiny area ( In this scenario) That sentry would be taken down quick with demoman's stickies because all players would focus the scout due to him dealing a ton of damage to the enemy team and obviously you wouldn't want to lose any players to this uber. No one would focus the demoman except for the engineer, but he's trying to repair and keep his sentry alive, and pyro would perhaps try to blast you out of this packed area of team RED. It depends on if the pyro were in the fronline blasting them out and if so it would be harder for the uber t go through, but maybe he was spycheking behind this "said packed area" and giving BLU team a free entrance for their uber. But it's hard to tell. I would want a demo to watch and see where this said location would be since it's reall hard to speculate from. But I haven't seen any problem with it so far and therefor this "classes counters eachother" arguement is still key when playing HL. I have never seen the wrangler being an OP weapon. And if your uber is good and you have a team with a brain you can destroy it. And because alot of HL maps are KOTH it you as an engineer wouldn't be running wrangler with a level 3 sentry because it's "too op".No, you would run mini sentry because it's mobile and is used more often in KOTH than in 5CP & PL. When you're playing PL it's same scenario here. When you are attacking you run mini sentry because you have nothing to defend. And when you switch sides and you're now defending you go level 3 sentry with wrangler. And both teams need to have good uber when attacking. Nothing is op and if you have practiced these things before as you should have there will be no problem when destroying that sentry.
HiGPS the problem is that the PRO community thinks that Valve wants to make TF2 full comp (like overwatch or CSGO). The PRO community is literally killing TF2 with this crusades against casual game communities and mechanics that don’t fit their standards. they think that everyone has the same level of knowledge, game sense and skill to abuse overpowered stuff that is in the game. They just analyze the game “issues” in their concept of right and wrong.
Uncle Dane made me realize how much time my Engie has been played (not much). Started playing him again in pubs, insanely fun when you know what you're doing
I think increasing the disabled time could work as it would make it more of a investment to wangle your sentry and make eliminating the engineer more of a priority but do think decreasing the damage reduction is better than completely getting rid of it as sentries are a bit easy when every one is shooting it so have some damage reduction makes the engineer's life a little easier.
10:00 I like the small detail that the highly advanced plan to kill the Sentry Gun and the "Press 2" plan of the Engineer have different fonts, with the "Press 2" plan of course having the dreaded Comic Sans font, like the plan itself being dreaded in the game.
Uncle Dane you were the one and only youtuber that I actually watched during my godlike tf2 playing I'm a college student now and I have less time to play but Thx for the videos I just wanted to thank you for all that years
I like the shield (conceptually) so I think, in addition to nerfing the shield heavily, it shouldn't be on all the time. I think that it should be a combination of the frontier justice battalions backup, where you build up a meter with sentry kills, then based off of how many kills up to a certain point (maybe 5) you can deploy the shield by pressing the reload button with the wrangler out. As a downside, you have to stand still right next to your sentry for a few seconds. This makes the engineer vulnerable to multiple things like spies and stuff, making the application of the shield more of a commitment like revving up the mini guns. The shield being a reward for sentry kills also helps make it less braindead, as you need to have already been effectively engineering to get that benefit.
I think splitting it with the wrangler you suggested, and a seperate almost short circuit style pistol where you can shoot using metal a shield that adds either resistance or just an e yea health, without healing core sentry, and adding just 50 percent fire speed to it. Like maybe the overcharge or something making a sentry more powerful for a time at the cost of doing anything else with your metal.
Maybe not health and ammo? Like this: -Cannot be repaired with shield up. -Cannot be unsapped while shield is up. -66% less ammo refill rate with shield up. -Shield deactivates two seconds after wrangler is holstered, the sentry reactivates four seconds after weapon is holstered. -Shield timer does not reset if the wrangler is switched back to during deactivation period.
I actually really like your suggestion, chaos in the form of order is always welcome. And yet, my sentries crumble faster than Pies do when they're chucked into people's face.
I'm actually going to disagree with the proposal to outright remove the shield. While it is OP in its current state, that shield does exist so as to make it so that your sentry isn't taken out in 1-2 seconds by Demomen. You wouldn't get much time to use your Wrangled Sentry at all if it's being focused down and doesn't have that shield to protect it. Instead, this is what I'd propose: - Shield Damage Resistance nerfed to 33% increase. - Shield drops the moment you put the Wrangler away while the Sentry remains disabled as normal. - Sentry cannot be repaired while Wrangled or disabled. However, reloading a Sentry in this state is still possible (so as to prevent making a related achievement unobtainable) I feel like the latter two changes would effectively combat the "turtle engi" issues that the current Wrangler brings up. Simply pressing 2 would no longer be enough to save a Sentry under attack, you would have to actively fight back in order to protect your gun, and switching off the Wrangler to start trying to repair the Sentry would simply be a death sentence to your mechanical weapon, as it would both be vulnerable and unable to fight back. On top of that, your efforts to repair it would be in vain until the sentry re-activates. Also, I don't feel like a Level 3 Sentry having slightly less health than a fully-overhealed Heavy with these new stats would be too overpowered, considering the amount of time and effort it generally takes to build one. But that's just my take at a solution. Feel free to comment below if you have other ideas for balancing the Wrangler without nerfing it into the ground.

3 beeps is because its a level 3 gun, the number of beeps is equal to the sentry's level.

@Damsen Bonk is banned nearly everywhere outside of pubs and first party comp, and casual balance is moot because everybody religiously refuses to take it seriously.
Love the fact that you understand 'effective health.'
I've never seen anyone else actually understand damage resistance properly, and calculate it properly.

I was once in a 2fort server on casual, went engie, set up a nest on the first floor.

Laughs in pyro
They do the same with explosive spam by using airblast's massive hitbox and spammability as a band aid fix. Than sniper exists top with terribly balanced unlocks like jarate, the diamondback, vaccinator, scorch shot, concherer, etc.
Important note that you forgot to mention:
Instead of the engineer pressing 2, the engineer has to be left alone for 30 seconds + in order to pull this off.
One of the best things to deal with wrangled sentry: Spy sap
Engineer is basically the proximity minefield of TF2, if you die to sentries is mostly due to you just walking into it, and as I've said countless times, everything is good against bad players.
Except for pub players using it)
I find it to be true that scout is the best class ever, and if you are a great scout in 6s you will counter everything.
Whenever I watch uncle dane’s videos it makes me want to play pubs as engie
Uncle Dane made me realize how much time my Engie has been played (not much). Started playing him again in pubs, insanely fun when you know what you're doing
Time to setup in the intel room
I would definitely enjoy a sentry jumping tutorial, I'm pretty garbage at bullet jumping as of now.
nate fox's tutorial is quite good
Same here
i saw someone doing the walls easy in jumpacademy with only a level 1 with bullet jumping

I like the small detail that the highly advanced plan to kill the Sentry Gun and the "Press 2" plan of the Engineer have different fonts, with the "Press 2" plan of course having the dreaded Comic Sans font, like the plan itself being dreaded in the game.

Your pfp makes this so much better xD

Uncle Dane you were the one and only youtuber that I actually watched during my godlike tf2 playing I'm a college student now and I have less time to play but Thx for the videos I just wanted to thank you for all that years
Yes uncle Dane has helped me become the active team player that I am today
You Gamer his teleporter edict is the first tf2 vid I ever watched. And now I watch uncle and other tftubers and play tf2
Some say Uncle Dane is still working on that sentry jumping tutorial
What about the sniper rifle that deals 700,000% more damage than the huntsman on headshot, and on bodyshot it .exe crashes you out of the game
And missed shots drop your FPS by 10? Yeah, that weapon is pretty good.

4:23 But, what about when you do a debatably unnecessary sentry jump in order to put your gun in a cheeky spot?

sloughious violet
Especially when the spot is so cheeky that Spies are incapable of reaching it.
0:15 god I play spy too much, that splash art actually gave me a feeling of satisfaction.
gta 4 loading song was beautiful
gamebanana.com/guis/download/34554 now we have a mod
But nothing compared to Gang Plank Galleon
0:12-1:02 Would actually love to see something similar to this as the new loading screen for TF2.
There's a mod for it i think
this video is indeed three years old. But that intro is still amongst one of the coolest I have ever seen for a TF2 video or any video.
I would love to see a sentry/bullet jumping video
That intro is way too good for 2019.

And when engineer pushed Scout off the cliff in a car?
*THAT SCOUT WAS A PRACTICAL PROBLEM*
Is no one gonna mention how Spy and Sniper killed Medic with that trap?
Or was that the DLC?

I think splitting it with the wrangler you suggested, and a seperate almost short circuit style pistol where you can shoot using metal a shield that adds either resistance or just an e yea health, without healing core sentry, and adding just 50 percent fire speed to it. Like maybe the overcharge or something making a sentry more powerful for a time at the cost of doing anything else with your metal.
Here’s a hot one: “Your sentry cannot recover health while it is wrangled”, other stats being the same
that would be balanced
that was my idea as well lol
Maybe not health and ammo? Like this:
-Cannot be repaired with shield up.
@@Goblinoiddoof that would fucking ruin the wrangler
How about just have shields for mini sentries. They need it more.

The best engineer weapon is his sentry gun
*without it, the wrangler wouldn’t even be good*

I agree, and it would be the perfect opurtunity to add the sheild as an upgrade in mvm
I actually really like your suggestion, chaos in the form of order is always welcome.
And yet, my sentries crumble faster than Pies do when they're chucked into people's face.
Intro is a lot of good!
Instead, this is what I'd propose:
- Shield Damage Resistance nerfed to 33% increase.
- Shield drops the moment you put the Wrangler away while the Sentry remains disabled as normal.
- Sentry cannot be repaired while Wrangled or disabled. However, reloading a Sentry in this state is still possible (so as to prevent making a related achievement unobtainable)
I feel like the latter two changes would effectively combat the "turtle engi" issues that the current Wrangler brings up.
That Guy Not bad. Me and most people has the idea that the Shield can break after absorbing certain amount of dmg.
9:23 We'll be right back...
