Alright Stephen, From what I remember of the size of the ford fiesta bonnet size when I had one it look roughly about the same size as mine I'd guess you should get away with two cans of gloss and two cans of Etch primer like I did and one can of Proxl clear hope that helps
Great job! I’m a complete novice to do with cars but I need to repaint my wife’s car as half of the paint on the bonnet is off and you can mow see half gold which is the colour of the car and grey which I’m not sure what this? Maybe the metal ? Anyway, could you please give me a step by step guide as to exactly what I need ana what I need to do from A-Z to repaint the hold? I’ve watched a few videos but your one seems to be easier to follow.. your help would be great appreciated. And do I need to remove all the gold paint first or roughly remove most of it. Thanks In advanced.
Hi there thanks for the kind words, the grey under the gold sounds like the primer Roughly for yours you will need 1 - Tack Rags 1- 3M Facemask 1 - Proxl 2K Clear 1 - 80,120, 240, 400,600 & 800 Grit Sandpaper Wet and Dry - 2 - Self Etching Primer - Grey or Black would be good since your colour is gold 1- Paint Wipes Or Panel wipe 2- Gold colour matched paint from your local autobody shop Sand the bonnet with the 80 grit sandpaper until its Dull and not shiny, move up in grades sand with 120,240,400,600 Clean the bonnet with soap and water and allow to dry fully 1-2 hours, clean it with panel wipe and allow it to dry properly for like 15 - 30 minutes roughly before laying down the first coat of primer leave the primer to dry fully between coats 30 - 45 mins typically in nice weather conditions 25 degrees or higher is nice conditions or a nice warm garage - Once all three coats of primer are done I would recommend leaving the primer until the following day or if your in a nice hot place continue after 3-4 hours Sand the primer with 800 grit sandpaper lightly so it feels nice and smooth clean the bonnet with soap and water and allow to dry fully 1-2 hours again and then clean with panel wipe and allow it to dry for like 15-30 minutes before laying the first coat of gold paint allow it to dry 30 - 45 minutes between coats. once you've done the last coat leave to dry for roughly an hour before putting on the coats of clear Between the coats of clear I left it roughly an 1 hour and 15 minutes the times are rough guidance if you live in a cold place your times will be longer but if your doing your work on a nice hot day they could be slightly less This was one video I watched before I started painting its good ua-cam.com/video/_owAbAw7FSE/v-deo.html but for your job it will require the steps I mentioned at the beginning of this paragraph since the condition of the paint on your hood is not smooth hope that helps Once you painted the hood it will need compounding and polishing I did that on this video at 8.49 seconds ua-cam.com/video/T3l-z7eVW00/v-deo.html If you've got some pictures or any other questions just shoot me over an email all the best

Damn good work. I have a polo 06 plate 1.4. 9n. I need to paint bonnet..front and rear bumper and left wing. What colour black spray do i need? And how many of each can do i neeed for primer lacquer and black? I have been quoter £500 for all the parts from professional body garage. Not sure whats the options maybe the professional ?
£500 is actually a really good price. On the inside of the door usually they will be the paint code for you car if not there it should say where if you type the car name on Google, mine was gloss black which is just a standard black so it was cheap to get the cans £4.95 each. Typically you need about 2 cans of each for the bonnet if its quite big. A wing usually needs about 1 can and bumpers usually about 2 all my cans I picked up from the local auto body shop. I've recently refurbished four wheels and that only needed one can of each to give you an idea how much you can do with a can. If you have any other questions just let me know 😊
@@kundi13 it is a lot to be fair I understand. I just finished recording the process this weekend will put some instructions in there and shorten the video got like 2 hours worth of footage and it will be up soon if you click the bell button on here you'll be alerted when it drops 😀
Thank you 👍🏻, I didn't sand the basecoat. After the job was done and the 2k clear was dry I left it for a week and then with all the parts on the car I went sanded with 1500 grit and then compounded and polished using Meguiars I've got a video up showing me doing that 😄
@@The_journeyy - interesting. Im getting mine wrapped but I got a new fiberglass hood and its gel coated white. Do I need to follow these steps to paint it before the wrap or can I just stop it the base coat? Btw: GREAT video. Very easy to follow.
If its already primed then you're able to go ahead and throw your paint coats on and then the clear coat, I've only primed something again if the primer arrived damaged hope that helps 😊
Great video - the outcome you achieved has have inspired me to try this myself 🙂The only thing I am unsure of is how much pressure to apply when sanding down the primer?
Once the primer is dry if you rub your hand on it you'll feel its rough. The aim is to apply some water and apply a little pressure whilst gliding across the primer. Once your hand glides over the primer with no roughness you know its flat and smooth, hope that helps and thank you for the kind words 😊
how come your spraying on so thick and it does run? also ive done my bonnet 3 times now from different video advice and it never comes out shiny like that.
What you see in the video is dramatically different to what the eye sees in real life the coats are not thick they're just right it's about getting the right balance of coverage whilst not going to heavy hence why I get no runs. I had the same experience its because half the videos on here skip steps and are awful with all respect hence why I made this video. If your job is coming out dull there's only three main causes for that the first being not flattening the primer with 800 grit have you done that?
1000 grit is a bit fine but should still do the job probably just needs a few more minutes of sanding, the next issue that causes that kind of result is not very good paints and clear are you using a 2k clear coat? 😁
Sorry about the slow reply just seen this now and no I didn't sand it back to bare metal just simply sanded thoroughly then went from there if you sand the whole bumper back to bare Metal then its a whole can of wombs and extra work will be required to prep it scuffing the paint down until its dull and there's no gloss is more than good enough 👍
Brilliant video, it has inspired me to give it a go on my one series. Quick question, I have a few chips on my bonnet will this mean I have to sand the entire bonnet back to bare metal so the whole bonnet is even?
I've never sanded all the way down back to bare metal on anything before it would take a lot of time and then you'd have to add extra steps for prep, depending on the condition of your bonnet if the reason you wanted to paint it was a few stone chips you could just touch them up or if you just wanted the bonnet to be perfect I'd sand it down until the paint was nice and dull using 400 grit be careful round the ends of the bonnet sand them gently and then 600 grit to make it nice and smooth before you lay some etch primer and then all your coats after would do the job hope thats helpful 😊
Hi Jason you don't need to sand the Bonnet to get it like mine unless your Bonnet has damage and needs filler work which mine needed, I needed to go down as low as 80 grit to fix certain damage. Just a typical hood that requires painting will just need a block and sanding from 400 as shown in the video to get it ready hope that helps
Sounds like it is even worse than the one I had for this car, if its new chances are it will come primed so if that's the case a nice gentle went sand with 800 grit just to soften the primer and then you can throw the paint and clear on If it comes and its got lots of chips on the primer which they tend to you'll have to sand with 400 grit and then 600 grit and then you can throw your primer coats on and then was nice and dry a llight sand with 800 grit wet and dry and then throw your paint coats on and then your clear and it will be done hope that helps Jasson 👌
There could be so many factors causing that to happen most common are: 1:You've not allowed the primer to dry properly and your sanding it too early 2:Your sanding the primer too hard and your putting to much pressure the whole point of sanding the primer after it's dried is too flatten it out and make it smooth using water you give it a light sand with 800grit 3:You've skipped a step and sprayed the primer without prepping the surface 4:Your using the wrong primer for the material your painting There is many other reasons why that could be happening but the common causes for that will be because something isn't being done correctly
I got mine this week and will spend several views of your video before I have a go at this. I will take before and after photos and maybe even a video just to shut the doubters around me up cheers
It depends on the size of your car but let's assume for example like me your painting a normal hatchback bumper like a MK5 Polo bumper which I've done in the past on my old Polo and I'm doing on the current one I used Mr Aerosol which are 500ml cans and I needed two cans of the primer and paint and one of 2k clear
Hello Alan, unless you've got a friend with a garage you could do it in or a gazebo you could lend from them that was the cheapest option for me or you could always wait until summer is really here and then there's hardly any wind hope that helps mate 😀
@@The_journeyy ye deffo bought everything too do it just heard from a friend ohhh dont do it in direct sunlight it will ruin the paint , is that bullshit ...
Have a look in this videos description it will show the things I used but its pretty much: Grease remover I used panel wipe Self etching primer Clearcoat 2k Colour matched paint Tag rags Sandpaper 80grit going up I've not gone as deep down as bare metal in the past I've just used the 80 grit to make sure its roughed up properly which is what most people do I hope this helps if not I've got a video coming out next week which shows the process I used to respray some steel alloys that might help.
@@The_journeyy great..defo going sandpaper the metal for the paint to stick. what about the underneath near to the edges do i sand that down even if its not to bare metal?
@@kundi13 Yeah when I spray painted mine I also scuffed the edges just be careful not to scuff them once you've got your primer on be careful when sanding near any edges with the 800 grit when your smoothing down the primer before putting on your colour matched paint
Its been a long time since I done it mate I believe it was a few I put the quantities and links to the products I used in the description hope that helps 😀
Hi there mate 2x primer 2x gloss black(colour matched for my car) 1x can of clear I've got a list of all the items used in the description if you've any other queries 😁
Very enjoyable and informative but small point I wish you didn’t call it sandpaper 😳 it’s wet and dry the emphasis on the wet bit. But very good thanks.
@@The_journeyy It's just that when I worked in a coach company wet and dry were always used, sandpaper would normally disintegrate with water. I was never a sprayer so I am no expert and it wasn't a criticism, just saying.
Oh I see what you mean I thought you was joking around couldn't tell if it was a real question working the coaches sounds good But I get your point sandpaper will Normally disintegrate if you put water or if your sanding for a while wet and dry is usually the most robust
30 minutes between each coat of primer, once all coats have been done I wait until the following day to sand the primer flat with 800 grit could be done on the same day I just prefer to leave it. Then 30 minutes between basecoats once all the basecoats are done leave it one hour before starting to lay on the clear for the clear typically an hour or so between coats. If your painting in a garage wait times are much better but unfortunately not all of us have that luxury I did this job in my garden :)
Hey Alan Yeah my email reginald71993@gmail.com Where did you do your painting outside? The only issue I can think might have caused the problem without getting more information from you is the base coats I'd only do 3x primer 3x base, 3 clearcoat and I sand the primer once its dry to flatten it out so you get the gloss when you get a chance send us an email with your pictures so I can have a look 😁
On my mine in total it probably took me half a day if that, drying times are always going to be slightly different depending on the products your using and where your doing the job if I had my own garage and some infrared lights I could have cut the time down in half but unfortunately for me I didn't have those things available to me 😊

Thanks for the feedback, I used two cans of basecoat and primer and one can of clearcoat the can is very large. I did three coats of each hope that helps
How many cans of primers and base paint did you use?
It's been a while since I did this job can't remember exactly I've got quantities for everything used in the video is in the description hope that helps 😊
hi man, just watched your video and results are very cool, how many cans of color spray do you think i will use for a ford fiesta bonnet, thx. Stephen
Alright Stephen,
From what I remember of the size of the ford fiesta bonnet size when I had one it look roughly about the same size as mine I'd guess you should get away with two cans of gloss and two cans of Etch primer like I did and one can of Proxl clear hope that helps
@@The_journeyy thx a lot for your time
No worries anytime 😄
Hi there thanks for the kind words, the grey under the gold sounds like the primer
Roughly for yours you will need
1 - Tack Rags
1- 3M Facemask
1 - Proxl 2K Clear
1 - 80,120, 240, 400,600 & 800 Grit Sandpaper Wet and Dry -
2 - Self Etching Primer - Grey or Black would be good since your colour is gold
1- Paint Wipes Or Panel wipe
2- Gold colour matched paint from your local autobody shop
Sand the bonnet with the 80 grit sandpaper until its Dull and not shiny, move up in grades sand with 120,240,400,600
Clean the bonnet with soap and water and allow to dry fully 1-2 hours, clean it with panel wipe and allow it to dry properly for like 15 - 30 minutes roughly before laying down the first coat of primer
leave the primer to dry fully between coats 30 - 45 mins typically in nice weather conditions 25 degrees or higher is nice conditions or a nice warm garage - Once all three coats of primer are done I would recommend leaving the primer until the following day or if your in a nice hot place continue after 3-4 hours
Sand the primer with 800 grit sandpaper lightly so it feels nice and smooth clean the bonnet with soap and water and allow to dry fully 1-2 hours again and then clean with panel wipe and allow it to dry for like 15-30 minutes before laying the first coat of gold paint allow it to dry 30 - 45 minutes between coats. once you've done the last coat leave to dry for roughly an hour before putting on the coats of clear
Between the coats of clear I left it roughly an 1 hour and 15 minutes
the times are rough guidance if you live in a cold place your times will be longer but if your doing your work on a nice hot day they could be slightly less
This was one video I watched before I started painting its good ua-cam.com/video/_owAbAw7FSE/v-deo.html
but for your job it will require the steps I mentioned at the beginning of this paragraph since the condition of the paint on your hood is not smooth hope that helps
Once you painted the hood it will need compounding and polishing I did that on this video at 8.49 seconds

Hello Gerry appreciate the feedback I'm just a novice giving some of the teaching I've got a go 😀
Damn good work.
If you have any other questions just let me know 😊
@@The_journeyy £500 is cool i guess. Do u have a vid how u refurbed the wheels?

Great job and great video ~
Did you wet sand the base coat before the clear application ; or did you wet sand after the clear was applied?
Thanks
Thank you 👍🏻, I didn't sand the basecoat. After the job was done and the 2k clear was dry I left it for a week and then with all the parts on the car I went sanded with 1500 grit and then compounded and polished using Meguiars I've got a video up showing me doing that 😄
@@The_journeyy
Perfect , I’ll check it out.
While doing the clear coat application ; how many minutes did you allow it to dry in between coats ?
No worries, I left it one hour between coats when laying the clear and 30 minutes between paint coats

Thanks for all the info bud , much appreciated ~
@@The_journeyy - interesting. Im getting mine wrapped but I got a new fiberglass hood and its gel coated white. Do I need to follow these steps to paint it before the wrap or can I just stop it the base coat?
Btw: GREAT video. Very easy to follow.
Did u have any issues with can not spraying good since ur at a angle??
The biggest issue I had was caused by the temperature I was spraying at but I found a way to overcome those 😊
Nice video my man. Well done.

Hey, where do i buy the thing you use for the spraycan? The Blackholder
Hello Runar I bought mine of ebay ebay.us/aFEeYi hope that helps 😊

Hi, not sure if this is a stupid question but if I buy a primed new bonnet will I still need to sand it down and re prime it?
If its already primed then you're able to go ahead and throw your paint coats on and then the clear coat,
I've only primed something again if the primer arrived damaged hope that helps 😊
@@The_journeyy thanks for replying 😁
No worries bro have a good day 👏
Great video - the outcome you achieved has have inspired me to try this myself 🙂The only thing I am unsure of is how much pressure to apply when sanding down the primer?
Once the primer is dry if you rub your hand on it you'll feel its rough. The aim is to apply some water and apply a little pressure whilst gliding across the primer. Once your hand glides over the primer with no roughness you know its flat and smooth, hope that helps and thank you for the kind words 😊
@@The_journeyy Thanks for taking the time! Cheers.
how come your spraying on so thick and it does run? also ive done my bonnet 3 times now from different video advice and it never comes out shiny like that.
@@The_journeyy yes I used guide coat and wet sanded, it was like a babies bum. But I used 1000 grit. I've done base coat again and waiting to dry now.
1000 grit is a bit fine but should still do the job probably just needs a few more minutes of sanding, the next issue that causes that kind of result is not very good paints and clear are you using a 2k clear coat? 😁
How much cans did you go through for your primer, paint, and lacquer?
Have a look at the description all the quantities and items used are there 😊
Nice job. How long after the third coat of primer did u spray the guide coat?
HI Jasson thank you, It was a nice hot day I waited about 15 minutes and then sprayed the guide coat 😊
Nice 👍. Was it rusty?
No it wasn't rusty it was just not the right colour so I colour matched it
@@The_journeyy So u sanded it back to bare metal?
What did you use to sand to get the hood like that in the first place? Before the 400
Hi Jason you don't need to sand the Bonnet to get it like mine unless your Bonnet has damage and needs filler work which mine needed, I needed to go down as low as 80 grit to fix certain damage. Just a typical hood that requires painting will just need a block and sanding from 400 as shown in the video to get it ready hope that helps
@@The_journeyy thanks man but I just realized my hood is too bad to fix up😂😂. I’m gonna buy a new unpainted hood, what do I start off sanding with?
Sounds like it is even worse than the one I had for this car, if its new chances are it will come primed so if that's the case a nice gentle went sand with 800 grit just to soften the primer and then you can throw the paint and clear on
If it comes and its got lots of chips on the primer which they tend to you'll have to sand with 400 grit and then 600 grit and then you can throw your primer coats on and then was nice and dry a llight sand with 800 grit wet and dry and then throw your paint coats on and then your clear and it will be done hope that helps Jasson 👌
@@The_journeyy thanks a lot!!🙏🏽

Is that regular black paint or colour matched?
Hi Yous It's colour matched paint 👏
Man can you do for me.nice job
Thank you Jay 😊🥳
I am not able to sand it after primer. When I sand it the primer is coming off. Why is the primer coming off ?.
There could be so many factors causing that to happen most common are:
1:You've not allowed the primer to dry properly and your sanding it too early
2:Your sanding the primer too hard and your putting to much pressure the whole point of sanding the primer after it's dried is too flatten it out and make it smooth using water you give it a light sand with 800grit
3:You've skipped a step and sprayed the primer without prepping the surface
4:Your using the wrong primer for the material your painting
There is many other reasons why that could be happening but the common causes for that will be because something isn't being done correctly
Kick ass job!

How many 440ml cans of colour coat will it take for a rear bumper to be painted in white colour?
It depends on the size of your car but let's assume for example like me your painting a normal hatchback bumper like a MK5 Polo bumper which I've done in the past on my old Polo and I'm doing on the current one I used Mr Aerosol which are 500ml cans and I needed two cans of the primer and paint and one of 2k clear

what did u use for a wind barrier i was gonna buy a gazebo is there a cheaper way ...

Grease remover I used panel wipe
Self etching primer
Clearcoat 2k
Colour matched paint
Tag rags
Sandpaper 80grit going up
I've not gone as deep down as bare metal in the past I've just used the 80 grit to make sure its roughed up properly which is what most people do I hope this helps if not I've got a video coming out next week which shows the process I used to respray some steel alloys that might help.

How many cans did you use?
Hi there mate 2x primer 2x gloss black(colour matched for my car) 1x can of clear I've got a list of all the items used in the description if you've any other queries 😁
Very enjoyable and informative but small point I wish you didn’t call it sandpaper 😳 it’s wet and dry the emphasis on the wet bit. But very good thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the feedback 😀
3 coats of primer and sanding is necessary.
The way I've shown the process in this video is how it's supposed to be done hope that helps
Isn't it 'wet and dry' not sandpaper?
Not sure if this is an actual question you are aware you can get sandpaper which is either of those right or both at the same time
@@The_journeyy It's just that when I worked in a coach company wet and dry were always used, sandpaper would normally disintegrate with water. I was never a sprayer so I am no expert and it wasn't a criticism, just saying.
Oh I see what you mean I thought you was joking around couldn't tell if it was a real question working the coaches sounds good
But I get your point sandpaper will Normally disintegrate if you put water or if your sanding for a while wet and dry is usually the most robust
Hello nice job:)
Could you tell what time you wait between the coats of primer, paint and the clear coat, thanks in advance:)

On my mine in total it probably took me half a day if that, drying times are always going to be slightly different depending on the products your using and where your doing the job if I had my own garage and some infrared lights I could have cut the time down in half but unfortunately for me I didn't have those things available to me 😊
