I was raised in the Canadian rust belt (Nova Scotia, Canada) and it was common for young people to buy an old car and try to fix it up. My father and I ran an autobody repair shop. I used to tell my friends to prime AND paint their repairs. It was a common misconception that primer would provide a measure of protection. I have also seen people paint directly over new parts thinking that sealer and primer are the same and they were confused when the paint started to peel. Thank you for the video!

Bend your elbow so it does not take the full impact of the recoil. Hearing protection is advised. Humility as a trait is an attempt to have good interpersonal relationships. This trait is glorified a little more than it deserves. Once competency is not necessarily dependent upon someone’s humility or lack of it. But people being people, are emotional. Most are insecure- and would like to deal with some one who lowers himself in other’s eyes rather than some one who is little high strung. This painter is very talented apart from highly experienced. Great video. Thanks for the teaching !

It drives me nuts when people just say do this because this is what works, without explaining how they came to that conclusion, or explaining why their experience may trump alternate approaches. Excellent to the point video. No time wasting happening here!. Well done and very helpful. Thank You.

All of this was great advice, and I've been painting cars for as long as I can remember, even in the days before 2K where Cellulose was used without Clear Coat and you needed to polish to get your shiny finish..
Another important tip he could have covered was using different brands of aerosol cans. Different brands have a differing coverage rate due to the pressure of the propellant inside the can. Some cans spray quite strongly while some spray less so and some even spray quite weak,....this will effect your speed of travel across the panel and your distance from it which he did cover. You will only gain that from seeing how the paint covers the panel and from practice and experience.
Good work, keep up that stance and keep clicking. 👏👍✌

I learned - and it works - not to mix aerosol rattle-can paint with a twist-of-the-wrist rapid shaking - it can create air bubbles. The best way to mix aerosol can paint with the solvent in the can is to hold the top of the can and swirl it around so you can hear and feel the mixer ball inside the can swirling around, rather than shaking the can every which way but loose. A fast but gentle swirl almost always produces an air-bubble free spray. Also, it’s a good idea to have a large sheet of cardboard, as shown here, to make your first spray to check for splatter, almost always because of a clogged nozzle. You can usually clean the nozzle with a fine pin and some solvent that’s compatible with the solvent in the aerosol can. It’s also a good idea to keep track of what nozzles fit what cans, and as you empty the aerosol can, remove the nozzles and keep separated in glass jars with lids, labeled with what can(s) the nozzles fit, with just enough compatible solvent in the jars to more than cover the nozzles. This keeps the nozzles from clogging up.

Very good info. Regarding the comments on your defensive stance, I believe it's important to be ready for attack in life at any given moment. I'll add that if you haven't got experience with a particular clear over a certain paint, you might want to test it somewhere. This is especially true with clear from an aerosol can, as they are more reliant on solvents that can lift your base-coat (not as big an issue with 2k). The likely-hood of an issue using a two part clear from a gun is almost zero, because they use a hardener to cure (like epoxy uses a catalyst in a second part) and maybe only some thinner to get through the gun. If you have to use a clear from an aerosol can you actually might be better off in some cases going against the advice of this video and letting the base-coat cure, then wet sanding for a mechanical bond. I say this because it's less likely you'll have a bad reaction to the solvent if the base is already cured. If you want to avoid sanding and you're spraying a clear from an aerosol can you're unfamiliar with, follow the video's advice but do a test for compatibility. I was an airbrush artist in another life doing primarily motorcycles and helmets. The clear we used could be sprayed over almost anything without issue, and was done almost exclusively over a cured matte airbrushed finish (2 part clear out of a gun). Finishing was done by hand with a compound (small parts, and lots of curves).

This is so far the best rattle can lowdowns I've seen. Thanks much!
2 questions for you and/or anyone with an opinion reading this:
    1. If I'm using the same brand (and paint type) of primer and color coat (in my case it's Rust-Oleum semi-gloss black paint+primer 2X, and gloss Hammered Black), is it better to allow the primer to dry for 18 to 24 hours, sand/clean, and then spray the 3 color coats? Or, is it better to spray the 2 coats primer, let it dry for 30 to 45 minutes, and then start the 3 color coats? What's best for bonding?
    2. Since 2018, in Colorado USA, I've noticed spray paint has increased prices 100%, when it's in stock at all. Is it the same for you? How about the professional brands and paints for booth use? Do you think the stores are keeping this profit, or the manufacturers, or the oil industry? Or maybe they're all so comfortable together in business it's like one big entity? 😆
Fuel is 150% higher than 2 years ago, for us in Colorado, so I'm personally interested how all things made of oil, or supported by oil-based transportation, prices' are affected. Thanks much!

Hah, that's the downside to using rattle cans bud, for big areas you need plenty of CFM. General Patton said " Do what you can with what you got where you are ", so, my advice is get your cans ready, warm them first in a bucket of warm water, wait for a cool night in the garage and go for it, take the hood off so you can get all round it and have it tilted towards you, maybe get a friend who knows what he's doing to spray the hood at the same time ?

Loved this sorted out my novice level... The other thing I think I've learned from your previous candy coating bike parts (black, red & gold) is a wide spray to cover curved items like front mudguards avoiding over spray. Also I guess I don't have to have a perfect gloss shine from final paint layer before adding a clear layer, obvious I suppose if you think about it.

    Those with small minds can only play the man instead of the ball. His style - his way of spreading information and experience is his own AND if he has made mistakes critique them not his mannerism - IF you can do better - then put your own talents on display {IF indeed you have any?}
I have no great talent myself - so I have learned from watch this video, which is more than I can say I have learned from the negativity of those in their mummy's cellar
But then again I will assume that the old saying of putting their collective brains into gear before you open their mouths does not apply the greater unwashed, who collectively seem to be unaware that every time they point a finger - they have three pointing back at them.

best response ever! 100% agree with you sir. too many people being negative because its the easy way. Some people miss the point of so many things... and thats too bad for them, because those people won't learn and they'll go nowhere in life. Like Bruce Lee said, learn which you need, and dispose of what you dont need. so i learn how to paint better, and i just ignore all the negative moorons lol 😂👌

The reason you sand before the clear coat is to remove any " nibs" that may have occurred. Also, a dulled finish provides additional "tooth" for the last coat which results in a superior result.

Here's a couple of tips for you Rattle Can painters. Once the surface is prepped and ready to paint.. Put the spray can in a pot of warm/hot water from THE TAP! do not boil it. 5min is good. The warm paint lays down much more even and the higher pressure in the can helps a ton. Second tip.. if you are running out of pressure in the can but still have lots of paint left...hook a 3mm airline to a small compressor with a gauge, pull the nozzle off the paint can and attach airline. Repressurise to 100 psi. The cans are designed to take much higher pressures but Ive never felt the need or had the courage to go higher LOL Also Sun drying your parts will cut curing time by more than half, but comes with the risk of getting debri on your parts if outside.

When I worked in a maintenance shop for small planes the mechanics often left spray paint cans on a little space heater we had - just for a couple minutes of course. One time the mechanic got sidetracked and the can got too hot. The results were about like you would think - it was black wrinkle finish.

The calipers don't get all that hot - they can't stand the sort of temperatures the pads and rotor experience. The seals won't put up with much above a couple hundred degrees and standard DOT 4 brake fluid boils at 230C (446F). Enamel is fine.

Probably if you were to try testing it on a piece of cardboard you could try this: spray your costs of bed liner like usual, after last coat of it as soon as it's tacky spray your finish color costs and then spray your clear coat(probably gonna want a matte clear since bedliner). I'm fairly sure that would work but like I said test on a throw away item first!

Glad I kept digging. Very informative, practical, easy to understand, sincere and energetically honest video presentation.
I’ve been on this paint-my-car-scratches problem for over 4 years. The journey was motivated by your average-local-honest-body-shop’s starting $500 and up auto-body repair costs. So where possible I’ve had to take my “nicks”. As you know “nicks” have a way of growing! But I kept looking. The brakes went on long ago when I ran into the problem that I could never know - that paint is subject to weathering and age. You didn’t mention ultraviolet light. But that’s OK. Once again I’m stopped on the problem of MATCHING THE PAINT [5:40] on my 19 year old car. The only advantage I have is that it is 19 years old. Now I’ll just have to try my luck. Your video has reassured my confidence. Thanks.

You can now buy a cartridge mask that will cover you to use 2k for a certain length of time. I'd still use air fed if your painting on a regular basis and Wear a full air fed visor as the pearl and metallic particals in metallic's can be bad for your eyes. I watch lots of American car programs and half the painters don't even wear a suit let alone a hood and visor.

    • @flagmichael

They must not get too hot. DOT 4 brake fluid boils at 230C (about 450F, like a very hot oven) while DOT 3 boils just above 200C. By paint standards calipers can get hot but not very hot.

you sand primer not base between coats. you can fill scratches thinner then your finger nail (nail doesnt stick on scratch) but it isnt a great idea. hand width is ideal for spraying with a gun (hvlp) but not for a spray can. Unless it has a very large nozzle or adjustable nozzle due to the smaller spray pattern you want to hold a little further back to increase your pass width. Spraying too close is a bigger issue as it creates runs and can leave lines. Engine blocks with normal paint? if you want it to peel very quickly. Breaks dont get hot? LOL. A part from how pearl and metallic are harder to paint they arent harder...
