Often you get a buildup of paint on the nozzle and it will impact the spray pattern or even worse cause a drip onto your fresh paint
I feel like the hardest part of doing all of this is finding an indoor spot to work on your car. : No wind, no harsh sunlight, no heavy dust, no outdoor debris, etc.
It’s a rattle can paint job. You can even see in his paint, there’s a lot of trash in his paint. This is usually fairly easy to get out. Wet sand the car to remove the a small bit of clear coat, then buff it all out.
I have watched the video, and when the gentleman brought the vehicle outdoors...... I was shocked in admiration for the high quality (glossy) results yielded by the work done! It is simply inspiring for DIYers! That vehicle's hood is astonishingly nice looking!!!
there is a very good reason for that. most of the time rattle cans leave what's called an "orange peel" effect. I'll just about bet (although I'm not a betting man) that between the time he finished up inside and took it outside he did a wet sand then compound then polish then waxed it, to make it look like that. now, of course, that means that more than likely there was a 2 to 4 week time span in between finishing up inside and taking it outside.
@@DonaldMelton Not necessarily, when sprayed on as lightly as it was but at the right distance, 2K paint flattens itself out and provides quite a good gloss. More so with spray cans than with a gun though. Not sure why but that's just how it be
i guess a man would have to get good at the spray cans . practice, practice, practice LOL . for myself i've always ended up with the "orange peel" effect.

OMG that's an amazing finish. In the 1980's I repainted half of a Triumph Dolomite with spray cans, it ended up looking great and nobody would believe that I did it myself. But that was light blue and single pack cellulose, which is much easier.
I'm in Oz, and have a 1990 TP Magna wagon. There are a number of rust bubbles on the hood. This video is exactly what I was looking for. IMO, it is a 5 Star video. Top work (with a rattle can!?) and very well presented. Thank you, I really appreciate this!
did you do it? how did it turn out? because I tried that technique and i got tons of orange peel. also tried sanding the clear coat after and it coat stained brown :(
Don't have any intention of painting a hood on a car but I found it really satisfying. Looks ace and I love cars. Clear instructions that don't need to be spoken the double coats in the dips that were clearly shown. Great video if people watched this they could save themselves money.
The original paint isn’t his fault. I have not seen a Santa Fe from that time (I have a 04) that doesn’t have that type of damage. The point is decent preparation with less than ideal material can yield a good result. 10 or 15 years, maybe not but he isn’t claiming that.
@@spliteone base coat metalics don't have hardener and are 50% by volume thinners, the same solvents used in acrylic lacquer. Most failed paint is more to do with incorrect preparation than anything else. When 2k urethanes first came out a lot of professionals continued to use 1k primers with no problems whatsoever.
YOU NEED TO WARN PEOPLE ABOUT THE 2k CLEAR COAT!!!! Cover all of your skin and wear a respirator!!! The 2k clear coat contains isocyanate!! BTW, the paint job looks good!
Fumes and paint fumes can easily leach through regular particle masks not made for it, your skin, and even your eyeballs. This may be the most informative video ive seen so far. im about to try to re paint my car but start with a test panel and this makes it sound so much more simple. Thank you
I don't know if he said, but I'm guessing it was about $100 (US) worth of paint. The primer and clear would be a bit less since they're assembly-line produced, but the Hyundai can was likely between $45 and $70 since it was a special mix. Still, awesome job, and it beats either living with the crap, or paying even more to have it done.
I am amazed that so little did so much. I am in-process on my 96 Jeep's roof, and I have burned up 6 cans of Dupli-Color and 6 cans of clear coat and now going through the buffing and polishing phase, because I got nothing near that that nice icy finish after the 72-hour cure. Smooth areas and rough areas [to the touch].
Great video! Thanks, it would be very helpful to note how long you have to wait after each coat from primer to base to clear. I get very impatient before applying the next coat.
Mad4Motors watched your video again lol. If I was to clear coat a 2002 Corolla how many clear coat cans do you think it would take going over entire car 3 times. Thanks in advance.
Just resrayed my Toyota Soluna. Used TOA spray paint. Came out fantastic. A tip that I found out. The best filler spray is Chrome spray paint. excellent for filling in scratches and paint that has reacted with the new paint. The Chrome covers thickly and fills, as important no runs. Then stray over the top with your colour paint. Good video. Thank you for posting it. All the best from sunny Thailand.
Great video. How many cans did you use for the clear and the paint? Im planning on doing this to my truck and I would like to get an idea before I start.
So... it's been 2 1/2 years since you painted this hood.... can you show some updated photos/videos? Does it still look this good? I've read where this kind of DIY job doesn't last that long. Thanks.
I plan on following your directions on the hood of my wifes older car. Its really bad from weathering the over clear coat etc. I will be happy if it even comes out 1/2 as good as yours did. Thanks for the video.
it's 100% been wet sanded, compounded and polished after the clear coat as you can see lots of dust in the paint 11:20 yet once outside the dust in the paint is all gone
Impressive m8 well done....ive been painting for years and achieved what most painters deemed impossible with the tools i have i.e cheap spray guns etc.....great to orove em wrong lol
cut and buff before clear? then degrease/tack? Coming from detailing trying to repaint my own car. How much cut, and what do you use for buff? I'm used to cutting compound/polish
Awesome job, I am using this as my guide in a few weeks.... My winter truck and work truck, 2004 Nissan Titan with 180k miles, hood , one side wheel well, other was fixed in accident.... screw the pros posting, this is a working man's paint job, got for a years on a high mileage
if you watch his techniques closely you will see him overlap each pas by half, that allows for full coverage. He also is spraying in a hatch pattern which allows more even drying rather than straight lines seen when it dries and you are left with a wavy pattern. It's best you spray a piece of card board for practice it might take an extra can, but the results of practice will be worth it. Always remember the 3 P's to success with auto painting... Prep, prep, preparation, it's time consuming but definitely worth the patience when done right the first time
His basecoat is filled with lines, not overlapped 50% look at the spray...he is doing what you described loll he just filled up his shitty basecoat with clear, allways look at the finish.cans are not guns and he is trying to use them like a gun...
Mate, great videos! I have an E350 with 190k miles on the clock. Before the summer is out I want to try and tidy up a lost of nasty chips on the bonnet and some other marks. Your videos will be a great help! Thanks.
Turd coat lol 😄 makes me laugh every time.. Only paint one area at a time with rattle cans . Painting a hood and panels at same time can become exspensive and your arm gets tired
I’m actually here because I recently started sanding my classic truck thanks this video helped a lot because I do not have the money to buy professional equipment!😁👍🏻
This is a very good job.Excellent. For most people doing a rattle can job the results wont approach this quality or shine, not even close. The job will be just OK and save you a lot of money. if there are rust spots etc it is even harder.
Brilliant as always.. but you are a rare perfectionist but a great teacher... ive watched everything you post... still want you take on my mk1 golf tho... 😊
" finding an indoor spot to work on your car."------ Agreed. The last time I tried spraying a junker I realized I would have to find a more sheltered Lay By next time.
I only just found this video randomly and I have an alfa romeo that needs a respray which I want to do myself. My question is how many cans of paint did you use for the fender and th hood?
Steve. I would buy a case (12 cans) of paint and a case of clear cost just to have it if you find you need it. And you might have to stop and sand away some of your work because you are learning. Nothing worse than having to run to the local auto store hoping they might have your color - which they usually don't - all while you last coat is drying longer than the instructions demand.
@@christopherkelley773 i need u bro . I had a joker paint and cover up a couple rust hole on my silver civic..hes a joke. Wow! Beautiful job. (I don't need to paint MINE, either, but you did such a great job...with such wonderful results....couldn't stop watching. That SHINE is spectacular!
This is awesome! I've been given a quote of a grand to do this on a small side panel on an Audi. Having watched this, I think I can give it a go! bought a new panel and paint for under £80.. If it works I'll just get them to fit mine, if not, no great loss. The video is very clear! Thanks for posting!
I would degrease the panel after washing and before sanding. Oddly enough degreasing can cause fish-eye. BTW, the larger the sanding block, the fewer low spots you'll end up with. A small block tends to "ride" into the contours, while a larger block doesn't. The second coat of clear should be applied at a right angle to the first coat rather than following along your previous spray pattern.
I did this on my 66 mustang years ago, aldo did the dash. Looked good. But recently for my pontiac g5 gt I just sanded, cleaned, and then vinyl wrapped the hood, grill, roof, and trunk top, and spoiler top. Looks darn good, and cost me about $75 in materials and was pretty quick to install. Less than an hour for the hood as an example. Both are good, inexpensive alternatives to getting a pro job done especially on an older car.

@@alesmendozaroman5870 still spray paints from a can. Not a compressor.
One of the best explained how to videos I've seen yet great job and yes it looks great for a can job
Well that (whether Irish Guinness, Gaelic Luck or whatever !) is an outstanding job Monsieur. Incredible and a very useful and practical film. Thanks !
You are a great guy I just did my hood for my 98 c43 amg Benz! I did it step by step, I made a ton of mistakes it’s not perfect but wow it came out amazing!! So shiny!!. I wouldn’t have even thought about trying without watching your video. Thanks a million!!!
This may be the most informative video ive seen so far. im about to try to re paint my car but start with a test panel and this makes it sound so much more simple. Thank you
The question of how many cans was answered way, way down below.
He said he used:
2 primer, 1 base, 1 clear
thanks.
One can was enough?! Too bad it probably requires practice.
My car is blue color, i will by 2 primer, 1 base and 1 clear. Which one must i buy in blue. Thank you so much
Now thats some impressive skills there!! Thanks for sharing! Im just up to paint my daughters vw cc. Got some great tips here. Thank you from Sweden
I am going to do the same with my daughters VW. Save 1500, and paint it just the color she wants.
Poetry in motion, excellent work and a practical no nonsense video dealing only in concise and factual advice. Top man. Cheers.
Omg this guy is awesome thousands of comments and he replies to them. Great job man.
Great video! Thanks, it would be very helpful to note how long you have to wait after each coat from primer to base to clear. I get very impatient before applying the next coat.
10 to 15 minutes for first 2 coats. 30 minutes for the 3rd and final coat.
Well done, looks awesome, I have to do this on my car and you made it look easy with great results, thank you for the video.
Hi thanks
Mad4Motors watched your video again lol. If I was to clear coat a 2002 Corolla how many clear coat cans do you think it would take going over entire car 3 times. Thanks in advance.
Entire car I'd say 4 to 5 of clear, best do it in stages
I’m reading these comments in his accent
Kevin Maiko.....😆
LMFAO
Bro me fucking too
Kevin Maiko lmfao!!! I didn’t even realize I was doing the same!!! 😂
go to pant
Just resrayed my Toyota Soluna. Used TOA spray paint. Came out fantastic. A tip that I found out. The best filler spray is Chrome spray paint. excellent for filling in scratches and paint that has reacted with the new paint. The Chrome covers thickly and fills, as important no runs. Then stray over the top with your colour paint.
Good video. Thank you for posting it.
All the best from sunny Thailand.
Best video on youtube showing how the job is done on basics
Buddy that was AWESOME thank you for sharing !!!!
Thanks.
1 year since you asked and no reply.
Accolades for a man that does an awesome job with the things that EVERYONE has access to.
Why do idiots like you always have a negative thing to say,, theres always at least one of you assholes every time....DICK!
No it hasn’t ye twat
Impressive m8 well done....ive been painting for years and achieved what most painters deemed impossible with the tools i have i.e cheap spray guns etc.....great to orove em wrong lol
You just sand more thats all loll while their job comes out of spraybooth allmost ready to go!
Make sure you cut and buff the paint to remove the debris
As a painting novice, what does that mean?
He doesn't have to. He already removed the debris.
cut and buff before clear? then degrease/tack? Coming from detailing trying to repaint my own car. How much cut, and what do you use for buff? I'm used to cutting compound/polish
Awesome job, I am using this as my guide in a few weeks.... My winter truck and work truck, 2004 Nissan Titan with 180k miles, hood , one side wheel well, other was fixed in accident.... screw the pros posting, this is a working man's paint job, got for a years on a high mileage
This is going to be my next DIY. Great video. You made it look simple. Thank You!
Did anyone else get a shiver down their spine when he started cutting the styrofoam?
as soon as I saw styrofoam I just skipped it half a minute forward 🤭
I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't stand the stuff. I'd rather punch a running blender than listen to someone fuck with styrofoam.
@@rocketleague7241 lol wtf
Turned the volume down
That looks awesome. I'm gonna give this a try on the roof of my car. The clear coat is peeling badly
if you watch his techniques closely you will see him overlap each pas by half, that allows for full coverage.
Prep, prep, preparation, it's time consuming but definitely worth the patience when done right the first time
Well done, I think this is the best job you can get from rattle cans
Same principle as chrisfix
His basecoat is filled with lines, not overlapped 50% look at the spray...he is doing what you described loll he just filled up his shitty basecoat with clear, allways look at the finish.cans are not guns and he is trying to use them like a gun...
Mate, great videos!
I have an E350 with 190k miles on the clock. Before the summer is out I want to try and tidy up a lost of nasty chips on the bonnet and some other marks. Your videos will be a great help! Thanks.
Better than my past results...more preparation and patience required by me !
Turd coat lol 😄 makes me laugh every time..
Only paint one area at a time with rattle cans . Painting a hood and panels at same time can become exspensive and your arm gets tired
Third lol
Your arms probably get tired lol and your attitude sucks

Really good job.. u should of showed an update video 1 week later
Masterpiece, really good job, I am impressed :)
Excellent job mate
Im impressed! Honestly
Nice comments, thanks
“Do it your self paint job ninja” - WOW!
Kin ell! Fantastic job! Looks straight from the showroom.
WELL DAMN. I need to PAINT MY OWN CAR! lol!
@@christopherkelley773 i need u bro
. I had a joker paint and cover up a couple rust hole on my silver civic..hes a joke. He sanded first, over rust , then bondo( put bondo on thick too) then prime, then paint, now it dried and looks a mess..not smooth at all. So to fix it..? I have to sand smoothly? ( what grit) then prime ? Then re paint ? Can u help bro..?
Did you polish or compound the final clear coat?
@Mike B it is what he does.
You would be wrong
I would degrease the panel after washing and before sanding. Oddly enough degreasing can cause fish-eye. BTW, the larger the sanding block, the fewer low spots you'll end up with. A small block tends to "ride" into the contours, while a larger block doesn't. The second coat of clear should be applied at a right angle to the first coat rather than following along your previous spray pattern.
How many cans of primer and basecoat did you use?
Clear coat link is for 2 clear coat cans so maybe 2 of each? I never used spray paint so idk how long they typically last
I did this on my 66 mustang years ago, aldo did the dash.
