I know I'm like 6 years late, but, the myth about the Trojan horse is even wackier than Lister's comic describes. Some of the Trojans actually were suspicious that there were Greeks hiding inside, one of them threw a spear into it, but stopped when a Greek spy disguised as a priest said the horse was also a gift to Athena and damaging it would anger her. Then Helen of Troy, still not convinced, started walking around the horse imitating the voices of the wives of some of the Greek soldiers, saying the battle was over and asking them to come out. Some of them actually fell for it, and Odysseus - being one of the only smart people in the Greek army still alive - was going around inside the horse making sure everyone kept their mouths shut, usually physically.
Lister gave the Inquisitor a gift by returning his glove, only the glove contained a hidden booby trap. He defeated the Inquisitor with a Trojan Horse! I guess that comic sunk in after all.
As someone who had a really messed up childhood i can really relate with Rimmer. My biological parents were bank robbers and robbed banks while my mother was pregnant with me so when she went to jail she had me while in jail so i was adopted. My adoptive mom was a drug dealer and later addict, i got lung cancer when i was 10 managed to beat it, had to deal with bullies and my moms drug addiction and mental issues as well as a parade of shitty boyfriends. When you deal with so much its hard for you to even think about wanting more because life has beat you down so much you don't know any better. Its the same with better then life where its all Rimmer knows so he can't accept good things happening to him because he never had it in real life. As when he says i might be nothing but where i started nothing is up i really relate with that.
Honestly the inquisitor is conceptually one of my favourite characters of all time, I want to include a character based on him in a DnD campaign, it's just such a cool concept that I feel so much more could be done with it than what this episode explores
I'll admit it - this episode scared the hell out of me the first time I watched it. It's daaaaark, man. :/ It's weird, I actually feel a hint of admiration for the fact that Rimmer honestly believes that he's done the best he could with what he was given. He's wrong, of course - the existence of Ace Rimmer proves that he had the potential for so much more - but he believes it. There's an odd sort of integrity in that. And of course it's also hilarious that Cat is the other extreme - so completely, blissfully arrogant that he genuinely believes that he's doing the world a huge favour just by existing. :D
Ah but Red Dwarf changes continuity on a whim, to eke out new jokes. It's a parody so it by nature can do so easier and it does it well! 😊 (yours is a good point nonetheless! )
@@ShamrockParticle his development into ace rimmer was triggered by a decision his mother made to hold him back a year. That might explain the inconsistency.
Jack Docherty who played the inquisitor was a member of the Absolutely sketch show team along with Gordon Kennedy who played Hudzen 10 in "The Last Day"
Something interesting I find about this episode is that it leans heavily into nurture over nature. Alternate Dave Lister would have presumably been raised by the same people who found him under the pool table, and he turns out the exact same way, suggesting that Lister's upbringing turned him into our lovable slob with wasted potential. Meanwhile, in one of the Red Dwarf novels (Last Human), they meet an alternative universe Dave Lister who was a total sociopath because he was raised by rich, neglectful parents.
Also at 9:18 there was a great line that sums up the lamenting of Kryten being made more human that you didn't include "I gave you a life to lose" I found that quote to be both deep and kind of sad since Kryten is one of my favorite characters
I guess I really should have included that line. I have to keep the clips under ten seconds so UA-cam's Content ID system won't detect them, so sometimes I have to leave out a bit I'd rather have left in.
One thing that never gets touched on is that, despite the Inquisitor's intentions, both alt. Kryten and alt. Lister appear to have led exactly the same lives as their predecessors. They didn't go on to anything better. If they wanted to go the philosophical route, Lister could have pointed this out to the Inquisitor and used it as evidence that the Inquisitor himself has been living a pointless life - going from place-to-place, wiping people out and making absolutely no difference in the process. In realisation of this, the Inquisitor chooses to erase himself from existence. Of course that wouldn't have been as funny. But I always thought it was odd that Alt Lister and Kryten didn't live better lives than their counterparts.
It’s no surprise that Lister had untapped potential, he built his own space bike in the “Kryten” episode, he’s repaired and reprogrammed Kryten several times, he helped Kryten with the triplicator in “Demons and Angels” If he actually took his job on Red Dwarf more seriously before the radiation leak, he could have become a high ranking technician, possibly even prevented the radiation leak by properly fixing the Drive Plate
One of my favorite episodes. Roughly that line with Rimmer gives that nothing is up, one of the lines I use to justify my life. It's roughly the best combination of humor and sci fi that I love out of this show. Everything I love about the show gets showcased here.
As someone with glasses, the guy at the start, I sometimes grab my glasses by the glass and I keep some kitchen paper near by so I can clean the smudges off. I use socks for the other purpose.
@6:15 Cyborcat "Cat lives by his own rules!" Well, apparently, so does Rimmer.... give A.J.R. some props, too! ;) But no, seriously, I love that you not only know Red Dwarf, but will do an analysis series on it. It's a classic, it needs more exposure!
1:24 In some versions of the myth, a Trojan priest DOES warn the others that the horse is a trap. But then Poseidon send two sea serpents to kill him and his sons. So the Trojans saw it as not accepting the gift was an insult to their gods.
well actually there is a core of truth to the story of the trojan war since there was a city found by evacuations at the location in the story and there were sieges and wars that the city was involved in. the dating of when this took place was in the 13th to 12 centuries bc. obviously as time went by details got muddled by oral accounts and other records were lost or often deliberately destroyed.
This is still my favorite episode, because it has it all: Plot, comedy and philosophy. I love the arrogance of the Inquisitor and that he basically still represents the selfdobut and self-hatred of the crew. Also, he looks freaking badass. Not everyone can do the Space Barbarian as good as him :D. Thanks for all the videos! You got me interested in Red Dwarf, so I watched all of it, so that I can enjoy your videos even more. This project is great :D!
Hehehehehe, the toilet paper was gone from the nightstand after the Inquisitor erased that guy... XD Also, I know he is really awful a lot of the time but I actually did feel bad for Rimmer there. (And also when Lister tears alternate Rimmer so badly.) And you know the funny thing? CS Lewis himself actually made the comment that we should be careful in judging others because we don’t know just how tough a hand they were dealt and that what may not look impressive to you (and would be easy for you) could be a real reach for someone else and maybe they would get credit for that after all. Also...in the scene when Kryten and Lister are despairing, the sadly ironic and beautiful thing is that they are actually giving examples of why their lives are actually worth it. Lister helped Kryten to be better than he was made to be (even though Lister himself has no ambition he actually did something worthwhile by helping another person to realize THEIR potential). And Kryten has done a good job of using the opportunities he was given. Also I should point out that it was Lister’s willingness to stand up to a sick animal abuser in the first episode that let Cat exist. So while Lister hasn’t made so much of himself, it seems like he has a good influence on others. And that ought to count for something. :-)
I heard an interesting theory once that the Kotchanski from series 7 and 8 changed due to the inquisitor as Lister in her universe was a hard light hologram so that means they ran into Legion and maybe the reason she's so different is because the original version got deemed unworthy
Season 5 was definitely the series spreading its wings and transitioning from the sitcom in space to much more of a sci-fi comedy. It started in seasons 3 and 4 but I think seasons 5 and 6 were where it really took off, then it kind of lost its way a bit in season 7 in my opinion. Not having Rimmer around for the vast majority of the season didn't help either, it threw the chemistry off badly.
