The lister bit is one of my favourite bits of this episode because shows some of the more subtle parts of his character development; a.k.a that being stuck in deep space on his own finally made him somewhat apply himself and achieve some of his potential. Lister does actually improve his abilities, such as his technical skills.
The typed out conversation between Cat and Lister is one of my favorite moments in all of Red Dwarf. Just the shock-still expressions and what they're saying cracks me up everytime. Also, never noticed Kryten's color conditions until now. Odd. Next one is one of my top 5. Can't wait!
Honestly, I always thought the entire program of Red Dwarf was like Silent Hill. I mean, Dave is sequestered in stasis (a form of purgatory, despite the fact that he wouldn't even be conscious for it), only to wake up & find everybody on board dead as well as being gone for 3 billion years; Rimmer is essentially a ghost, unable to touch anything or anyone (until he becomes hard-light, I know, I know); Kryten, though relatively innocent & naïve, becomes "cursed" with the Pinocchio syndrome ("I wanna be a REAL boy"/ a.k.a. Data from ST:NG); and Cat....well, because of his vanity he has to keep suffering being ignored for his own personal emergencies (ie. saving his own clothes rather than another person's life). I dunno if anyone else finds that too, but it's at least my two cents :p
Do you know that Chris Barrie is a mimic and used to work do a lot of the voices in a show called "Spitting Image" . Not only is he strangely hot but incredibly talented!
I always thought Rimmer was a good looking bloke. Even more so as Ace. But THIS episode makes me DROOL!!! I've been crushing (ie. lusting) on him ever since!
@@LiViro1As a fairly famous actor- in the UK, at least- I doubt it would surprise or disturb him! It’s well known that it’s very common for people to project our fantasies onto, or lust after figures from the small & big screen.
Lister and Cat hold a silent typed conversation about a taranshula on a Commodore Amiga! I'm glad to see that the BBC used this computer so extensively on Red Dwarf at this time.
can someone tell me the name for that stock music when Rimmer’s good traits fought the bad traits? heard it once on a dvd promo for Fairly Odd Parents and again in the Hercules vhs promo
I enjoyed it, too. The two best parts for me were the "Taranshula" bit and the "Jet-powered Rocket Pants" bit. With this, too, it is quite funny when we see that Lister fixes Kryten right away without any mistakes, other than a few things that are left over. Terrorform was quite the episode, and as an idea with them visiting a Psi-Moon, made after someone's mental scape, was not a bad idea at all. This is right up there with "Polymorph" as one of the more original ideas that Red Dwarf ever had for bad-guy characters.
*I just read up on the animosity Charles (Lister) had with Barrie (Rimmer) apparently it was mostly over pay disputes, Charles was only getting paid £600 per episode, meanwhile Barrie was getting paid double that amount.*
I may of missed something but one thing with Rimmer is that he in the early series loves the idea of aliens and since there is no aliens in the early series (human mutants and stuff yes) but then in the later ones when they meet them there is no reaction from him at all, they just deal with them like it's nothing
Umm, what creatures are you thinking of? Because there aren't any aliens anywhere in the show as far as I can remember--everything is explained as being a GELF of some kind or a simulant. In fact, in Season XI they meet a computer that knows all the secrets of the universe and it states that Earth is the only planet where any life forms originated.
Actually the thing that told them the secrets of the universe was the universe itself, and yes she's right no aliens exist in the Red Dwarf universe only humans and GELF's
If I remember correctly it was a space station which acted like a giant phone which connected with the universe which had been on hold for millions of years until Butler found it
The broadcast version for when Kryten plays the "elevator on hold music" was a different cut, with a faster and more upbeat tempo. They had to switch it out, which was unfortunate. It's the same song but something about the original's tempo made it funnier.
This episode delivers the best insult ever. ‘Stop your putrid whining you dank tuft of rectal pubic hair’. Though I would have replaced ‘dank’ with ‘soiled’
The monster was originally build for Doctor Who, but was never used because it failed to live up to expectations. Think about that for a moment. Doctor Who, a show that especially in the eighties was notorious for it's cheap special effects, rejected the monster for being too crappy. Are you sure you really want to see the full thing?
Does anyone know the name or number of the stock music during the battle of Rimmer's positive and negative traits? I remember it was on an episode of The Sooty Show too and I wanna find a clean version to listen to!
Lister rebuilt Kryten once before he wasn't perfect at it but it's how we got from David Ross to Robert Llewellyn ... Silent Hill would be released 7 years later....Oh you know ... I wonder if they watched Red Dwarf ... ? One of the handmaidens was Sara Stockbridge she was the muse of fashion designer Vivenne Westwood .. and is now an author... she married Cobalt Stargazer, lead guitarist with Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction
Ok Im trying to find a red dwarf episode where Kryten actually speaks binary for a tiny part in a scene. I cant quite remember the scene or what the story was but I can remember him standing there maybe talking to a food computer dispenser maybe? Can anyone remember and or let me know what episode this would have been in? Its not the silicon heaven episode nor Terrorform crash site ( which lead me here ). Its bugging me. I quoted it on a yt video but now stumped as to the episode. I see the scene in my head! DAMN IT! Help!?
Ok, found it. It was in the episode Terrorform but later on in the episode when he says "001100111011000111100" which he translates to: "Don''t stand around jabbering when in mortal danger!" when they get into trouble. Think maybe around the 6:18 part of this video. Phew! That was annoying. Apologies. I like your videos! Nice one! Subbed!
@@Cyborcat I must have seen all episodes all series's over and over. Couldn't say how many times Ive seen them all. Thats why I should have known this episode lol. Oh well. Thanks.
Kind of a messed up twist, Arnold Judas Rimmer being clothed like Christ... Does this mean Rimmer really has a Messianic complex... Foreshadowing his becoming Ace Rimmer? Nah.
season 3-6 are the best series with some of the best character arcs and character evolution, which is part of why I don't enjoy the new series as much, lister and kat have back slide to season 1 full on stupid.
women ? no ,the moon will just be full of cats himself ,itll be catworld like rimmer world was ,he loves himself so the moon would be filled of himself

Please can you tell me what those skills were? Too lazy to rewatch it!
Rimmer is a great character...what a shame he died.......what spoilers? No no he is dead since season 1 XD
Also dies in Series 3

Psi-lent Hill Moon? Genius.
I love Rimmer and his torso ;)
We need to get a magic carpet to go see the king off the potato people.
Saying that will give you 2 hours of WOO no oxygen for 2 hours that'll track you to be a bread basket

*3 Million years.
@@noahlogue** 3 Billion years.
No one in the universe could possible loath Rimmer more than he loathes himself.
Notice that Lister's ordeal with Kryten's severed hand and his belief that it was a tarantula is similar to Rimmer's worst fear in Better than Life?
Do you know that Chris Barrie is a mimic and used to work do a lot of the voices in a show called "Spitting Image" . Not only is he strangely hot but incredibly talented!
I can only imangion how many slash fictions were created from this
8:03 Kryten's fake smile is classic
Another fantastic episode in the greatest series of RD.
I have a Mr. Flibbles hand puppet.
Today I learned I am called a “Rimmer fangirl”. I had the biggest crush on that man. Still do, actually.
Me too. Makes me feel lots of things.
He’s a handsome guy. Confirmed heterosexual here
But he’s a smegging hologram xD
If you're in trouble he'll save the day
He's brave and he's fearless come what may
Without him the mission would go astray
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer without him life would be much grimmer
More reliable than a garden strimmer.
He’s handsome, trim and no one’s slimmer, he will never need a zimmer
A strength of Series 5 is that it does a good job hiding the production troubles concerning the director
I always thought Rimmer was a good looking bloke. Even more so as Ace. But THIS episode makes me DROOL!!! I've been crushing (ie. lusting) on him ever since!
Took the words out of my mouth. I have done things watching that scene that should not be disclosed.
I would like to watch Chris Barries' face if he ever were to read these comments!

Ahhh i love this, the idea of being in someone's mind that is represented in some physical way.
Cat looking damn fine in this episode. That tiger print getup is something to be envied.
I consider this to be one of the two most quintessential Rimmer episodes.
Tyrant-Den what’s the other one?
All that's missing is a horse drowning in the swamp and a wolf monster.
I’m surprised Rimmer’s positive traits didn’t look like Ace Rimmer.
Lister and Cat hold a silent typed conversation about a taranshula on a Commodore Amiga! I'm glad to see that the BBC used this computer so extensively on Red Dwarf at this time.
6:00 "I'm a Shadow... The True Self"... Anyone? Eh? Oh come on, that's basically what he's saying ;p
In every Arnold Rimmer, there slumbers an Ace Rimmer.
can someone tell me the name for that stock music when Rimmer’s good traits fought the bad traits? heard it once on a dvd promo for Fairly Odd Parents and again in the Hercules vhs promo
I suspect Cyborcat may be something of a Rimmer fangirl herself...
I'm mainly a Cat fangirl, but Rimmer isn't hard to look at either =P
Shameful. And you a married woman. :o)
I was waiting for the "I woulda shagged him!" clip, and was very happy to see it. xD
My local tv station had that music too

Yah, that sounds right.
2:44 I've just realised, Cat's resting his foot on a pedestal just like Riker does in Star Trek: The Next Generation lol
You're right XD
that music when the rimmers are fighting sounds like from one of the three musketeer movies. fitting, considering what they're dressed as.
Were you planning on including Series 11 snippets in the opening now that the DVD is available in the US?
*spoilers*
Perhaps Cat in the birthing tank.
Hey Dena ever played Simon the Sorcerer? Chris Barrie Voices Simon :)
Hadn't heard of that. Maybe I'll check it out.
Ever heard of another British tv series called death in paradise it's got Danny John Jules in it

An episode of Red Dwarf was able to be a better Silent Hill movie, than either of the official Silent Hill movies : what, the, blood-y, smeg.
I wonder what the full monster looked like.

Or maybe a Cat-moon based on Psy?

Well it would probably just be a giant strip club with beautiful women and really handsome men who wear very fashionable clothing
They wouldn't have needed a boat to traverse the swamps. You know why?
