The other awesome dialogue sequence: Kryten: Shh. Listen, can anyone hear anything? Cat: No Kryten: Exactly, no one can hear anything, and do you know why we can't hear anything? Rimmer: (annoyed) Why? Kryten: (in a spooky voice) Because there are no sounds to hear
this ep has wormed into my brain so bad. Usually when someone asks me "What is it" I have to force myself to not reply 'I've never seen one before, no-one has"
I liked how Hattie had her hair tied back and was in soft focus and lit more, worked well for her. And that "What is it?" catch phrase from Cat gets flogged to absolute death in this episode. There seemed to be a recurring in joke with Cat since the "Fish" vending machine scene where they just get Danny to get repeating his line ad nauseum.
To me, this was also one of the better episodes. I especially liked Talkie Toaster and the fact that it featured Holly in a lot of scenes. I wish that Talkie Toaster had made more appearances in future episodes. David Ross would have been good for that role. Only real problem was that the White Hole idea actually comes up in the third quarter of the episode. There is no mention of it before that, so in a sense, everything else is miscellaneous. Also, the white hole also seems to appear out of nowhere.
Pleased to say I live near the Aigburth Arms pub in Liverpool (where Craig Charles is from). Yes, it's a real pub! Now called The Victoria though. Decent family pub actually...not quite a 'backstreet Scouse drinking pit', as Rimmer puts it!
This is the first episode of Red Dwarf I saw on BBC TV in England. Also after I saw the vindaloo monster in person at a BBC Open Day at Ealing Studios.
I think bringing in Kryten more or less erased any need for Holly since they both represent the same character essentially, exposition. Norman came back for one episode in the new series but that was it.
@@optimisticwhovian1726 - I disagree that they are the same character, the similarity is just that they are both used for exposition. But that's not necessary, and they have very distinct personalities. I think that Holly works because they basically ARE the ship, so they give you a sense of what a messed-up old derelict it is. From a writing POV, they'd just need to avoid having Kryten reading from scanner scopes all the time for ship status, and concentrate more on his cleaning/crew/starbug activities.
Post series 8 they've only brought him back once and for one episode. What I find a bit sad is how Hattie keeps turning up to the conventions when the last time she appeared in the show was over 2 decades ago, nobody ever has any questions to ask her cos she's not really relevant now, she only had one stint in the show so she just sits there while Chris, Craig, Danny and Robert answer everything @@GamerWho
I don't think there's much difference in them apart from the obvious female slant, she was hired after all because they considered her a "female Norman" but the character is superfluous is the bottom line. I would be all for losing Kryten and having Holly back as much as Rob gave to the show he did overdo it with the acting sometimes but you cant turn back time, if Norman hadn't had one of his classic tantrums and left the show in the first place then Kryten wouldn't have come along so blame Norman for the fact Holly left. @@HereComesPopoBawa
I won't spoil, but, Talkie really got a minimization in the TV incarnation. Yeah, he was still annoyingly toast-obsessed in the novels, but, he also got to be the hero and save their asses, once.
How does someone being told their life is worth less than others so they should kill themselves (especially when the sacrifice is basically pointless, because the others will die soon anyway) leave THEM in the moral low ground for refusing?
I love “girl type holy” too. Hattie h is great hear, personally I don’t think Norman could have made this work. I was disappointed when holy was rebooted back to him.
While I’m not entirely sure that Talkie the Toaster is fully capable of making a cheese and ham bramble, I won’t disregard his ability to convince me that he can.
Two questions that bother me about this episode. If there is no power, then how did they open the landing bay doors in order to fly Starbug out. Also, why didn't Lister and Cat use a Starbug for their conveniences if the ship had its own power source.
Kryten says at the end that none of them will remember it, hence why he took the opportunity to tell off Rimmer. Then Lister mentions "playing pool with planets" it in Demons and Angels. The writers probably forgot that detail.
@@Cyborcat simplest explanation is that Kryten is wrong. second simplest explanation is that Kryten is lying, because he wants to finally call Rimmer a Smeg Head and the idea that it won't be remembered/"won't count" is necessary wiggle room to bypass the bit of his programming that never lets him say it normally. and of course, Red Dwarf has always had a healthy disrespect for taking continuity too seriously and for those who get too wrapped up in doing so. [RD launching in 3 different centuries, crew size increasing by 1000, Lister having 2 appendectomies, Kochanski and Magruder both becoming legit girlfriends instead of pathetic one-way crushes on the boys' part, etc.]
I had almost the same feeling for this as you did, however, there were a few things that I would like to comment on. I noticed a few parts that should have been added but weren't and would have made it a lot funnier: 1. Kryten says he is experimenting with Talkie Toaster to try and reduce his life span by increasing its intelligence. This should have been done. It would have been hilarious to see Talkie Toaster with an IQ in excess of 12000. Then at least Lister would have been happy when Toaster's life ended after about three minutes. 2. There is absolutely no indication whatsoever of how the White Hole got there. One thing I don't like in TV shows is when they take the whole point of the show and put it in the middle, having other things unrelated to it happen before. The fact is that the first part didn't concentrate on the White Hole at all. It concentrated on the crew struggling around during a complete power failure. In spite of all this, I did find White Hole funny. The antics that happened made up for the missing scenes. Although White Hole was not one of my favourites, I liked it enough to recommend it. Note: Talkie Toaster reappears in a future Red Dwarf episode called Mechocracy, but I wish they had more episodes with him on them. He could have gone to other aliens and stuff that the crew met and asked them if they wanted toast.
I used to prefer Lovett’s portrayal but as I got older I think I like Hayridge’s more… maybe it’s after knowing what an ego maniac Norman is who sulks when he’s not the centre of attention kinda tarnished it for me.
I do not agree with you about having alternate methods. If we lost every computer in the world went out, all the younger genefations would not know what to do. Most of them dont even use pen & paper anymore. Every device has re laced everything manual. Includin vehicles. Its ridic we dont have back up here on Earth, let alone space. My Fat Face every time I’m with someone, somewhere and it’s really quiet, I can’t help but to quote Kryten
i know I'm kind of randomly asking but does anybody know a good site to watch newly released tv shows online?
"Kryten, isn't this about the time of year where your head goes in for maintenance?"
this ep has wormed into my brain so bad.

When talkie toaster kept asking Holly if she wanted any bread related products such a witty well written scene!
Kryten is a Doctor Who fan... With his head effectively panel beaten by being a battering ram, he thinks he's the First Doctor :)
Rimmer directive 271 states just as clearly: no chance you metal bastard.
Lololol
I like the fact that they mention a Time drive in this episode and THEN eventually run across one... Bleeping their personal continuities up...
I'm fine thank you Susan cracks me up

I watched these episodes out of order on VHS, so this was my introduction to Talkie Toaster.
Yes I remember this, back in the day the BBC released the series on video based on popularity rather than in any order.
... and Cat being a smart arse with purposely repeating the loop... Gotta love it!
So what is it?

The TV incarnation came first, so it would be more accurate to say he was expanded in the novels
Talkie Toaster deserves his own spin off series I reckon 😎
Is it just my imagination... Or does Holly resemble Tasha Yar during the ST:tng episode 'The naked Now'?
A little bit XD
Yes ! in the scene where she 'greets' Data at her quarters door 🙂
“No chance you metal bastard.”
Nearly killed me the first time I heard it 25 odd years ago 😂
It's not even that clever of a line, but Rimmer's dead-pan delivery makes it funny.
@ Absolutely 😄 Chris Barrie is such a fantastic actor. His performance in RD is hilarious and he was always my favourite character growing up.
How does someone being told their life is worth less than others so they should kill themselves (especially when the sacrifice is basically pointless, because the others will die soon anyway) leave THEM in the moral low ground for refusing?

You know i never understood why Holly didn't just use her new high I.Q. to bypass her life expectancy and achieve immortality for her at least
What is it?
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.
What a guy
I'm fine thank you, Susan.
YES! More RD vlogs! AWESOME!
So at the end of the episode. Blocking it up and going back, doesn't it mean that they will try it again and again?
no because they just erased that time line, now they'll just fly on through space without this incident
The science fiction plot elements here are very similar to Star Trek TNG's Disaster and All Good Things.
yeah no worries mate,no spoilers. thanks for doing this .
So what is it?
I've never seen one before, no one has, but I'm guessing it's a White Hole

a Hwhite Hole

Emergency power,of course duh..!
did he say pished ?
Yes, you must have mished it. Go home, your pished
If they don't remember how does Lister talk about it in a later episode?
Kryten says at the end that none of them will remember it, hence why he took the opportunity to tell off Rimmer.

i cant decide which holly i prefer, i like both too mutch, ah fuck it i just like holly all together
Tom is Lazy Male Holly was dryer, female Holly was sterner. Both of them work really well.

Yes, "Girl-type Holly" is a Ranma 1/2 reference ^.^
Another great episode!
I noticed the Monty Python Looney reference, am I the only one?
Manos Konstantinidis. Ummmmm...yes
Love you're stuff
Only a minuet in and I'm already loving this review

Sean Micheal actually XII is debuting in days on the uk tv app
