Kryten has to fight off a computer virus to save Starbug and the crew. But the Boys From the Dwarf stick together.
This had to be re-edited to get past the Content ID System. A better-looking version is here: vid.me/FmoR

Personally I think exclaiming "marvellous!" is a great way to finish up a bar fight. I guess I'm just too British.
Also this is one of the best episodes ever. I like how well the crew work together for a change.

I remember watching this episode, and the Emohawk episode, back when they were first shown, here in England, and just being overwhelmed by how good they were. I used to sometimes feel the same way when I was watching the Simpsons, back when it was still good, in the '90s.

You know, Rimmer complaining about Lister's use of the AR machine for sex is kind of hypocritical coming from someone who owns at least one blow-up doll. Not that hypocrisy is anything new for Rimmer.

    • @callinater6133

That’s the joke. Though I do think AR sex is probably more degrading than a sex doll, though I wouldn’t know what society’s attitude on that would be given that we don’t have total immersion AR games yet.

My favourite episode too. Especially the Tarka Dahl bit. It made such a bit impact with the UK audience, that the laughing nearly drowns out Bhindi Bahji. Pub (as in beer), then curry house with more beer, was a common thing back then. This being due to UK licensing laws being so antiquated then, that all pubs, bars and off licences, closed at 11pm.! Lock-ins in cities were very rare, due to the amount of old bill around. The tongue stick out at the end of the scene, to make them look more alien like just adds to it.Then with the final flourish as Kryten needs his eyes back. Its quite refreshing to see a US take on UK pop culture. Also your insights into references that one misses, is amazing eg. the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse. Keep up the good work.!

That's because establishments don't really treat science fiction seriously and that goes for all organisations really, drama is seen as the number one whereas science fiction is seen as some fringe interest that the people voting for these things probably don't care about also the fact Red Dwarf is science fiction and comedy can often be a double whammy in terms of being treated seriously by those who aren't automatically science fiction fans.

One of my favourite outtakes of the series is showing the countless takes it took for that 2 seconds of the bullets getting shot out of the air - All they have to do is drop the bullets in to frame and have them stay there and they just can't get it, as someone who did something similar for a college movie it's almost therapeutic to know even with a TV budget some simple shots are still the biggest pain in the ass imaginable - It was probably a pick-up shot but I just love to think there's about 30 people or more just standing around watching a guy dropping bullets for 20 minutes.

I really liked this episode and thought it to be one of the best, as well. My favourite part was when Rimmer throws up in the hat of Bear Strangler Magee. This was also great in that, aside from Kryten, the Cat seems to be an integral part of this.
Another note to make: In the DVD set of Season 2 episodes, they have the ABC's of Red Dwarf, where they go through each letter of the alphabet and explain something to do with the show that starts with each letter. Under "L" is "Lawyers", and it cuts to Patrick Stewart (who played Captain Picard on Star Trek: TNG). He explains that he was horrified with Red Dwarf upon seeing it for the very first time, because he thought it was a rip off of Star Trek TNG. As he was picking up the phone to call his lawyers to get a law suit going, he noticed something that happened that would never happen in TNG. After this, it cuts to the trick shot scene, where Cat shoots his gun and the bullets hit everything and the sign. Patrick Stewart thought the western segment resembled the Star Trek TNG episode "A Fistful of Data's" and after watching the aforementioned scene, he laughed and realized what it was about, becoming an instant fan of the show. Ironic, isn't it?

The Age of Consent in the USA varies from State to State! In MOST States it's actually 16, but because nearly all films & tv shows are made & written in California (where it's 18), many Americans believe 18 is the AoC for the nation.
It's 18 in Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, California, Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, Delaware, & North Dakota.
It's 17 in NY, Louisiana, Illinois, Missouri, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado & Wyoming

There is a hilarious outtake that with some editing could have been one of the episode's best gags. After Lister and Kryten exit the VR game at the beginning, Craig after struggling to remove his VR gloves and helmet, forgot to remove the piece of hardware covering his groin. When he then tried to walk away, the cable it was attached to snagged and he fell to his knees in pain. As I said, with some editing it could have been worked in to the episode.

This episode is heavily influenced by Star Trek TOS SE:3 EP:6 Spectre of the Gun. It's obvious that the writers know their sci-fi, lot's of star trek, with Blade Runner, Alien and Hitch Hiker's Guide to The Galaxy thrown into the mix (throughout the shows entire run). The thing I love about RD is that it's written by people who clearly understand science fiction. Yes it's a parody but It's an affectionate parody written by sci-fi fans, it's not sneering and condescending of the genre.

‘The Matrix’ is basically a rip-off of this episode. Kryten is Neo. Think about it. There are many similarities.

As far as I'm aware the age of consent in the UK is only 16 if the other party is between ages 16 and 18. sort of like the Romeo and Juliet laws in the States. So Lister being his age would be wrong if it was real anyway.
Some strange consequences legally perhaps that if someone almost 19 had sex with someone just 16 soon they would have to wait just under 2 years to be able to legally have sex again.

No, the UK has a blanket age of consent, which is 16. The only exception is if the other person is a teacher or in some other position of authority.

A bit late, but yes, it is 16 in England actually.
