Rest in peace. A brilliant mind and a wonderful person. I'll always remember you from my childhood watching Mythbusters, and later on Spellslingers. We'll all miss you.
Well, if blue players insist on playing in the disgusting standard meta of nowadays you kinda are forced to say that. Luckily there are eternal formats for wise blue mages like moi.
***** just got done with a standard on MTGO, i was playing against a black white blue deck... they always had a counter, always had a killspell *heroes downfall*, and always were pulling money with their 800$ deck vs my 5$ deck.
In the final episode of #Spellslingers Season One, Day9TV takes on Grant Imahara in a long-awaited Magic: The Gathering match! What were your favorite things about this season? Who do you want to see sitting across from Sean in the future? Tell us in the comments!
Nice Peter plays or used to play magic he would make a good guest. This show was fun/interesting to watch even as a veteran player. Though it would be fun in future seasons to see other formats played or more competitive decks played sometimes. As the show goes on it might be ok to show more complicated plays and interactions.
Personally, I think since this was introductory Magic, Season 2 should be more intermediate level with more advanced non-preconstructed decks. Then (because, forward thinking) Season 3 could be expert level Magic using Tournament level decks. :)
This game is great for those who are new to or have never played magic... It's kind of painful to those who play it a lot. But it has Grant Imahara.....So it was worth.
painful? I'm not so sure. I'm one of those guys that play enough Magic to know these decks are only elementary level, and I watched day9 from starcraft before. Although these decks aren't all that spectacular, these 2 guys did a wonderful job in creating tense moments and made the game look fairly exciting, while at the same time explaining every move like a documentary. I liked watching it all the way. I get where you're coming from, but once you get past that "it's just pre-con decks" part, it's pretty fun to watch. Try not to let that pro-player point of view get the best of you i guess lol
I can get behind that. I'm not a pro Magic player by any means, but I could still notice a few things that they did that made their choices less effective. But like you said, that's not really the point of the show. It's a great way for new people to see the game and learn the rules, and they do a good job of explaining things. And it's entertaining!
I am new to Magic. Your Spellslingers episodes have been more helpful any tutorials I've been able to find out there. The way you all openly reveal and discuss the cards played and the plans made has prepared me well for the games I play. Thank you!
Craig Stockton If you haven't already checked out these other channels, Tolarian Community College or The Mana Source, I highly recommend them. Hope you enjoy playing Magic! I know I do lol
Grant Imahara - Planeswalker 4 +2 : Put a 1/1 token creature named Kari or Tory onto the battlefield +1 : Put a 3/3 token creature named Adam or Jamie onto the battlefield -10: If you have Kari, Tory, Adam and Jamie on the battlefield, put a 99/99 token creature with Indestructibility named Buster on the battlefield
@@XiaosChannel yes. This. Just a massive defender where if it dies it is immediately put back onto the field under owners control. Because Buster can't die. 🤣
You were very kind to Grant in this episode, Sean and I think it is a lovely time spent with him. He'll be missed and I'm glad you got him in front of a camera having fun with a game we can all relate to.
Grant surprised me with some excellent plays, it's cool to see stars play magic that are actually skilled and experienced in it. This series is AWESOME.
Wil Wheaton would be a fun opponent, I suspect. Chris Hardwick or Morgan Webb would be cool, too. Sean makes this so fun to watch, though, I don't think you can go wrong no matter who you put across the table, as long as they are prepared to amaze us with their conjuring pose. :}
This was definitely my favourite episode. It's great to see the back-and-forth between these two guys, and they're clearly having a lot of fun! I love Spellslingers! ^^
Let's test these myths: Will someone play a turn one creature? Confirmed Will the turn one creature get destroyed? Confirmed Will someone get pissed? Plausible
I'm really loving Spellslingers. Sean mentioned in an AMA that there were 6 initial episodes and if we loved it hard enough it would come back. So here I am rubbing my love all over it.
Daniel Dietz How much replay can you get out of like 120 cards? Is there a maximum number of colours in a deck you can have? I guess it'd be better to not have too many colours? Can you play the same person over and over again without having to buy new cards, or does that get old quick? I want to get into Magic but I'm afraid I have no friends who play the game!!
Daniel Dietz Also, do you only need to tap cards when summoning creatures from your hand? And when casting spells from your hand? And when you deal damage to creatures does that mean you also deal damage to the other player, cos Grant took out Day9 at the end by killing his creatures? Not completely familiar with the rules but I've been watching videos lately. I wish the WoW TCG wasn't cancelled because I like Warcraft more. Hearthstone doesn't seem to have the depth that TCGs have, and I'd prefer to open real cards then virtual cards.
+spacemonkeymojo I only ever play with my brother, we've been playing for about a month and it was getting a little tired before I got new cards, but we were playing with portal cards, which are a set from 1997 designed as a simplified version of the game for beginners, with a library of only 35, I don't see my newer cards getting dull any time soon 'cause with 60 cards and more types of sorcery there's much more variety
I love coming back to these early videos for many reasons besides Imahara whom i watched back then in Myth Busters MTG 10 years ago was nicer, less obnoxious 10 different arts and foil for a common cards making it hard to get normal basic border cards So now everything is unique and nothing is unique And the simplicity of Core Sets were amazing for a newcomer and even the sets had easy to understand mechanics for a newcomer like me back in Theros Nostalgia is hell of a drug dawg.... good times
This so perfectly embodied the old school spirit of MTG. This reminded me of when I started playing when I was like 14 and most cards were still a surprise and there was still mystery and shock and fun in the game because everyone wasn't playing the exact same $2000 decks and instead were just having fun with an imaginary battle. I still remember that exciting feeling of thinking up an awesome combo move and then hoping your friend didn't have a way to mess it up and then you actually pull it off. Great vid, I may go dig out my old Magic cards now.
Swaggen Hawdcoh Did you notice the elbow in the right edge of the screen at around 11:47 or so :D. I'm not criticizing or anything, just pointing it out. I know that stuff just happens sometimes. But yeah, the editors have done a really good job with this series.
This is the first episode of spellslingers I have watched, and I really like how everything is animated an talked about. (A bit like game knights from command zone). The only downside to this show, is the speed that this is played.
Some of the comments on here are exactly what puts off so many people from this game and intimidates new players out of ever playing competitively. Most Magic players are cool people who are helpful to new players and fun to talk to. However, in every room of FNM there are always a couple of arrogant players who suck the fun ot of the game for new players. These are the same type of people who are commenting on a video that is posted to be entertaining (and friendly) and criticizing rudely. Even better is just how many of them are flat out wrong in their comments. If this was a video of high level competition, or advanced instruction, it would be different, but it is very obviously not targeted at that demographic. If you play this game, you should want it to continue to grow in popularity and gain more players. Your snide comments can be very off putting to new players, especially considering this kind of video is likely to pull views from complete beginners.
Johnny Texan You have to get over that shit. There are people like that in literally every kind of competitive game, from MTG to chess to Dota 2. Some people are just elitist dickheads that can't comprehend other people aren't as good as they are (or aren't, depending.).
Gakoranus Or, you know, someone who likes to play a *game* to have *fun* and not be told how they are having fun *wrong*. I've played M:tG for over 20 years and have never felt the need to point out how someone else's card choice or play style was wrong, unless they asked for the criticism or suggestions. As long as the players are enjoying themselves, who the hell cares if the decks involved aren't optimized or top shelf. I've entered tournaments with decks that were most likely not going to win, but were going to be a hell of a lot of fun to play, both for me, and for my opponents. That's the goal of games, folks. Loosen up and have some fun, and stop trying to tell others how they are doing it wrong, just let them enjoy themselves and stress out about your own decks if you feel the need.
MonoKabi I dont get worked up when people play for fun I dont see why you're getting you knickers in a twist because other people don't understand why you would play a fundamentally competitive game to not win.
Gakoranus All games (except for the recent advent of the co-operative team games) are fundamentally competitive. That's why the phrase, "it's not about winning or losing, it's how you play" came into being. One does not play to win, one does not play to lose, one plays to enjoy playing. Being inventive, original, unexpected, entertaining. That's what I play for. With thousands upon thousands of cards and combinations out there, even if you don't win, it's always fun to have a 'holy hell, that is an awesome combo' moment, even if you proceed to get wrecked.
I had a blast watching this! One thing: You gotta learn to use the stack better if you're playing red/blue! Save your instants to the last moment (i.e. play them on your opponent's turn). You could have killed that centaur by double-blocking, then zapping it after it returned to the battlefield (but before Gift of Immortality did). 2 cards for 2 cards would have been an ideal trade for your delay strategy, especially with Archaeomancer already having paid for itself by giving you card advantage.
Seriously this show is the best thing out there MTG-wise, it's both fun to watch from beginning to end and I get to learn new strategies! Keep 'em coming!!!!! :D
jianpang88 Grant couldn't have kept his centaur back forever. The longer the game goes on the easier it is for Day[9] to keep up 2 mana to kill the centaur. Even so, the decision to alpha to deal two while taking 3 on the swing back is an unfavorable race, especially when your opponent is at a higher life total already.
If you have closed captions on at the end of the video, it takes the "may you draw well" and turns it into "making for all land". UA-cam is trying to curse Magic players.
I personally was never a huge fan of these types of games. More into board games, etc. But this show has become one of my new favorites here on UA-cam! I love the way it's shot and the sense of fun and humor! Keep up the awesome work!
So for season 2, maybe mix some Commander in there? It's reaaalllllyyyyy fun, and with only 2 people it wouldn't last that long :) Pleasepleaseplease? :D As for who should battle Sean...has Wil Wheaton been on? I feel like Day[9] and Wil would be an interesting show :)
I mean, yes, both decks are kinda bad and basic but this show is tailored to the casual player that plays for fun and doesn't drop tons of money on meta decks for tournaments. I'm surprised Grant's actually a decent player, he made some great plays during the game especially with the Heliod's Emissary.
You can actually cast monstrosity more than once but the effect only happens once. This is useful for stacking purposes such as "I cast monstrosity, opponent casts a response to weaken/kill, I cast monstrosity (again) in response." My monstrosity happens, then the damaging spell (like Lightning Bolt), then monstrosity happens again (but nothing actually happens this second time).
I love how they get excited about bringing a lighting strike from the graveyard, I feel like a lot of us lost this excitement of our first games of mtg...
Rogerborg, according the rules, it's tottaly okay to tap lands for mana after placing the card on the stack, because casting a spell ask to pay the mana cost after placing the spell on the stack and other thing like determining target and you can activate mana abilities when you are asked to pay a mana cost.
So I've been looking into Magic recently and I think it seems like fun. I really enjoyed watching this video (fun personalities here), but some of the people in the comments are really off-putting. They come of as super elitist and don't make me want to join a community that looks down on you for just starting out.
I have been playing for only under a year. This is a good video for new people, but there were points that seemed they tried to over-simplify points. The magic community is amazing. It's one of the best parts about the game to me. I hope that you pick it up and enjoy this amazing game.
R.I.P. Grant. A truly brilliant mind...
Mythbusters was my favourite show as a kid. I remember thinking it was so cool that he was into mtg as well. I’m sad to see him go.
A terrible loss. Always so fun and engaging. Can't believe he's gone. 😢
May Grant rest in piece.
Grant, may you avoid those lightning strikes in the afterlife. Rest in peace, Planeswalker.
This is how I find out......
Rest in peace Grant :( i just heard the news and im glad we have footage like this of him. very very depressing :(
RIP Grant. You will be missed

Well, if blue players insist on playing in the disgusting standard meta of nowadays you kinda are forced to say that. Luckily there are eternal formats for wise blue mages like moi.

MrWubly same!
How much have you learned by now?
Anyone else want them to get Wil Wheaton to show up on Season 2?
Definitely. Maybe he'll have better luck winning in MTG than in Table Top.
Carlos Velarde Hahaha, probly not xD
Hell yea Brian, good call! Have Wil Wheaton on! I'm only 3 years late. Have him on the NEXT next season
Seth Rogen or Patton oswalt 😮
I am VERY late to this post, but Wil Wheaton quit playing MTG because of "the chase," as he calls it. I fear he would not accept the invitation.

That was a fun episode, but I think they went a little overboard on the reactions this time.
I think they were kind of playing off each other and getting ridiculous and hyped. I found it fun :)
if you watch grant doing anything, he isjust like that
Pretty sure this is just Grant being Grant and Sean being Sean. Everything they do is overboard.
Ehh. They were over dramatic but Grant beated Sean. And that’s confirmed
i agree on this one, they are both just so extra
This episode fills me with a lot of joy. Watching someone who's just learning having so much fun with it
God, I love this series... Looking forward to future episodes!

what? No bag of cards for Grant?
I only discovered Spellslingers about a week ago, but I liked this so much that I feel like I have been waiting for a second season for 3 months.
I feel like that we got a glimpse of Grants O-Face after the Doom Blade/Pacifism move.
This is a really cool series! Please make more of these!
Sean you wait until THEIR turn to cast Lightning strike so they waste enchantments on it 5:44
They absolutely NEED to bring this back, it's hilarious

I like that you explain every card. I only play magic 2014 so i don't know a lot of cards.
I demand more spellslingers!
Seriously this show is the best thing out there MTG-wise, it's both fun to watch from beginning to end and I get to learn new strategies! Keep 'em coming!!!!! :D
We need an episode against Ryon Day!
I love how every single card played is absolutely the most epic movement in the history of games.
At 10:10 sean should have left the two creatures up to block and then lightning striked the centaur on re-entry. He would have saved a lot of life.
His mana was tapped from the archeomancer from the turn before
I was saying that he shouldn't have attacked at that point in the game and waited for him to swing in with the centaur. :)
ligerman30 Oh I see.
ligerman30 but if Day9 saved both attacks it would be suspicious then Grant might not attack the centaur. Then again that would save some life too
jianpang88 Grant couldn't have kept his centaur back forever. The longer the game goes on the easier it is for Day[9] to keep up 2 mana to kill the centaur. One of the best episodes. Grant had awesome luck.
I'm not a magic player, but this was a very entertaining episode. The interaction between the two players really sold it.
Hey where is Day9 and a new episode ?
I love this
These two have a great rivalry dynamic. It's pretty rad.
Wait Grant isn't using a robot to play MTG? What sorcery is this?!
I was hoping he would come with this: cardboard-crack.tumblr.com/post/59646288191
jay w hahaha xD
The explanations in these episodes have helped me so much as a new player
when he summoned the giant i saw the doomblade in grants hand and i was just like lol do it grant fed your dark side
You can actually cast monstrosity more than once but the effect only happens once. This is useful for stacking purposes such as "I cast monstrosity, opponent casts a response to weaken/kill, I cast monstrosity (again) in response."
My monstrosity happens, then the damaging spell (like Lightning Bolt), then monstrosity happens again (but nothing actually happens this second time).
Good Grant, playing the best kind of deck. :P
I have no clue what these guys are talking abuot. But I love the enthusiasm and passion
The production value is hella improved.
I love how they get excited about bringing a lighting strike from the graveyard, I feel like a lot of us lost this excitement of our first games of mtg...
This is so hilarious to watch as a legacy and modern player XD
REALLY hilarious
"HE BROUGHT BACK THE LIGHTNIGN STRIKE AGAIN!"
This is hilarious to watch as someone that follows Day9's UA-cam channel since 2015. He was so thin!
Jay Well I play formats where you bolt snapcaster bolt. XD
The intro music always makes me SO HYPED for season 3... (I've watched every episode 20 times btw)
Stag party!
5:11 "you gain ten life?" lmfaooo then day9s face omg it sums up that feeling perfectly
WE WANNA SEE TWO HEADED GIANT MATCHES
I love the over-the-top reactions! It's great.
This was actually fun hahaha
R.I.P. Grant. Thanks for everything !!
No epic loot?
Rewatching this episode now just breaks my heart... Rest In Peace you beautiful Brillant nerdy king!
Day 9 didn't give Grant his prizes. Why no loots? : (
Rogerborg, according the rules, it's tottaly okay to tap lands for mana after placing the card on the stack, because casting a spell ask to pay the mana cost after placing the spell on the stack and other thing like determining target and you can activate mana abilities when you are asked to pay a mana cost.
Shouldn't there be a new episode by now? Have I missed something?
It comes back in the summer.
Just heard the news and came here since I loved this video. Grant was awesome!
Serious question.....what the hell was Grant on? He seemed like he was high as a kite.
Mor like high as a hellkite. Haha
William King High as a Spellskite.
William King Haha! I see what you did there! Now take that after damage you little thingy you.
ocvinas I redirect that damage to spellskite
Chris Mulford Oh you little...
Sean and Grant make an extremely entertaining duo. Sean's jokes always get me. Also, Grant really gets into these games. Excellent sound effects haha
this should be good.
Never would have guessed Grant played MTG. You learn something new everyday.
would have been interesting too randomly give grant a high tides decks.see what happens.
I don't even like Magic. But this is the most entertaining show I've ever seen.
Well...
This was the best episode of the series, incredible game.
