Day [9] vs. Chris Kluwe in Magic: The Gathering: Spellslingers

- Join Sean Plott (a.k.a. Day[9]) as he plays Magic the Gathering with former Minnesota Viking and present real-life geek Chris Kluwe in episode 2 of season 3!
Sean “Day[9]” Plott faces off in a against former Minnesota Vikings punter and past, present, and future video gamer, tabletop gamer, and fan of all things nerdery, Chris Kluwe. As seasoned players, Chris and Sean will be playing more advanced decks this time around, with Chris playing a Blue/Black Control deck which is a horrible color for horrible people. Sean, on the other hand, will be playing a Green/White/Black Abzan deck. Once again, these decks are loaded with new Magic Origins cards and feature new spells and mechanics, so keep an eye out for spells like Demonic Pact and mechanics like Bolster!
How will Sean handle the onslaught of Blue that is Chris Kluwe? Who will truly rule Valuetown? Will Chris ever let Sean get a card in play? Sure.
Regardless of who wins, in the words of Sean Plott: May you go forth. May you fight the good fight and defeat all the Blues. And of course, may you draw well.
This season, Sean and the gang will be playing with Wizards of the Coast’s new Magic Origins Set, which tells the stories of how five of Magic’s most iconic planeswalkers began their journeys. The Magic Origins Set doesn’t release until July 17th, but you can get an exclusive sneak peak of one of the cards here!
GLHF, everyone, and don't forget: Magic the Gathering is for winners. Don't do drugs, kids.

My friend plays blue. He's still my friend because any time i try to end the friendship he doesn't allow it.
TheCrosshare he cancels it 😂😅
Sure. It resolves.
He counters it successfully.
He is very good at countering things I see ;)
Lmfao 🤣🤣🤣
AH, Blue: The color for players who want to play Magic, but don't want anyone else to do so.
Sean McTiernan lol
Sean McTiernan I love your profile pic. lich king
Sean McTiernan true... I
I’ll have you know that’s actually the BEST way to play Magic.
Sure
Sean: I don't have any cards. I'm interested to see what you're doing.
Chris: Second Demonic Pact
Sean: (big sarcastic smile)
Me: (laughing til I cry)
does anybody regulary come back to this episode?
Me
sure
yes
sure
Sure
Reminds me when I play against my husband's blue decks:
Me: "Can I ... can I cast this?"
Husband: "Hmmm .... I'll allow it."
***** That sounds hilarious. xD
Sure!
***** that is alpha as f*ck doe ;)
***** But watch yourself McCoy....
***** 4x "Boseiju who shelters all" and 4x "Cavern of Souls", should help your deck out against him. Not sure if you play modern though... Being a blue/black player at heart, I can say how much I hate seeing my son play a Cavern of Souls and then basically laugh at me and just play his freaking creature. The only option I have is nuke spells, which work well, but now with Collected Company and others, he regenerates pretty fast. Too fast...
I know that there are plenty of others, but those two cards are kind of an automatic "sure" :-)
This video always makes me smile. I watch it two or three times a month just to see Sean get punted by Chris. lol
This episode is a good setup to make two T-shirts
1) T-shirt with "Sure."
2) T-shirt with "It resolves"
gerbillgrubb Put "Sure" on the front and "It Resolves" on the back.
Trevius Rex I want that shirt!
gerbillgrubb There's a T-shirt with the Island symbol and the text "You'll play that spell when I want you to play that spell."
eyl227 I. Need. That. Shirt.

What an epic game. I totally lost it at the James Bond villain speech, this kind of storytelling within a Magic game makes it such a fun game to play with a friend!
Possibly the most epic battle yet. Chris Kluwe tries to lock down Day[9]'s Abzan aggro deck with a blue/black control build using new Magic Origins cards like Demonic Pact! Is demonic trickery enough to sway a charging Siege Rhino from its course?
Magic: The Gathering
epic battle?
While I was entertained this was the most one sided battle yet in Spellslingers. I mean there was never any real interaction, just a lot of counter.
Magic: The Gathering *Spoilers*
yes. yes, it is.
Magic: The Gathering No spoiling
Magic: The Gathering Blue is hate...BUT dimir is love! Day9 ¬¬
Sure.
I started watching these episodes to help myself learn how to play magic. I can proudly say that this is the episode that got me playing blue to this day.
Good for you, I learned how to play Magic from my cousin Darby.
God I love this show, this and tabletop is the only reason I stay subscribed to G and S
wrap267 Same
wrap267 You don't watch Titansgrave? If not you're missing out.
wrap267 Add Titansgrave and Critical Role, then we're good.
KathTea Katastrophy - Corsetiere & Model gonna go try em out :)
wrap267 The best and latest stuff are on the G&S website, you can still comment on the unlisted videos on UA-cam.
This was by far my favorite episode! I love Sean's smile after Chris played the second Demonic Pact!!! lol!!! Great deck, Chris!!!
I've been waiting for true Black/Blue for a while and now I feel vindicated, drinking Sean's tears like a fine wine. I savour his suffering, and you should too!
Perfect victory for him! Back to 20 life, kills perfectly to 0, leaves opponent with no cards, has TWO demonic pacts and barely dodges the kill spell Sean would have had the next turn. I love this game!
This is, by far, my favorite episode of Spellslingers!
MORE! This is not only a great example of control, it covers a wide range of actions. Really love these spellslinger vids, keep em coming! It resolves!
This was an absolutely Magical episode. =3

Learning and playing magic was on my bucket list after watching your show. I am 57 years with terminal cancer. Watching your show taught me how to play Magic and now my son game every day. Thank you for making my life just a little brighter in the time I have left. I don't want anything from you I just wanted you to know you made a difference.
Please bring this show back!!
please
Pleaseeee.
Yes please!
Please!!!!!
i want this show back please
I still remember this episode to this day. Sure
Great game to watch, both players had a plan and knew the game. Spellslingers is fun to watch players just have fun playing Magic but once in a while, it is nice to see both players know the game well enough to plan a victory turns in advance. Thumbs up to Day9 and Chris Kluwe.
If only Chris would have played that Disperse before looting with Jace, then he would have flipped and survived the Languish. THEN HE COULD HAVE FLASHBACKED THE DISPERSE ON THE DEMONIC PACT! Oh, the missed value...
AntaresMTG I think at that point Sean would have flipped the table :P
Philip Baker That's two of the same legendaries.
AntaresMTG Chris probably didn't actually have the disperse, I can't say for sure because the camera wasn't focused on the cards in Chris's hand but on Sean.
That being said, Sean was contributing way to much to the board. Only playing one Undercity Troll and leaving mana up to regenerate it on subsequent turns would have been a much better plan of action.
Zairian At 13:24 you can see that he has Disperse already in hand.
Zairian It would be pretty foolish to wait for a top-deck save from that enchantment, he probably had it from the start.
"At least don't give me hope!" SO quotable. I need this in a gif.
This episode is: 40% gameplay, 60% sure
It resolves

Sure
+kobisjeruk 5% Pleasure, 50% pain, and 100% reason to play black/blue and reign!
+Shadownet Spy What you did there, I see it.
Great episode! Chris was a great guest, personable, funny, and explaining each step of what he was doing. I enjoy watching episodes with those who know how to play the game well.
as a long time blue player, i've been waiting for this episode since the beginning.
well done Chris, congrats on brutalising sean :)
Such a wonderful episode. One of my favorite parts about this show is that it includes every turn, no cutting for time.
An NFL football player who is good at magic... awesome.

I've never seen Magic before in my life. The camera work and two cool ass dudes made that enjoyable.
I kind of wish the whole series was these two battling it out.
This video was perfect length. I was able to enjoy the whole thing before work. I happen to find it and watch it when I had 25 minutes before work. Was quite enjoyable. I'm glad I noticed it. Made me want to get back into the game. Been playing Magic Duels, etc. but they aren't the same as playing against a person with physical cards.
YES!! ADVANCED DECKS!!
Drew Peterson Sure
It resolves.
+Drew Peterson sure
Sure
I've seen this so many times and it just gets better everytime. SPELLSLINGERS BACK with Chris Kluwe as the first guest!!
That smile at 22:03 had me rolling on the floor laughing.
Probably the best episode of this series!
Please, I need more of this show in my life :(
Chris's deck was awesome! Maybe a future deck tech or just a plain link to the cards in the deck? Love the show keep it up!
This needs to be a 2x a week show! It's too good to make us wait so long in between episodes!
Still my favorite episode of Spellslingers!!
GO DIMIR!!!!
+Xhinope Screw you, blue player!
Blue ftw
I watched this video when it launched and I barely knew how to play Magic. Many years later and I now know that Chris should have totally kept that opening hand. 3 Clash of Wills and two lands?! Bro you just play it for 2 the first three times your opponent curves out you will draw more lands! That hand was so gas.
This one was by far the most entertaining show out of all of these very entertaining shows on Geek and Sundry. Might have even outdone Table Top's Cards of Humanity episode. Good job!
Sure....
Great episode. Sean and this show has opened the world of magic to me and I am enjoying the ride so far. Keep up the great work everyone.
Can you guys start including deck lists? That U/B Control deck looks sick.
I'm hoping for one too
Deokflsa look up blue black demonic pact
So glad to see you play more complex and powerful decks! Hope you keep it up
Even Spellslingers are not free of the abomination known as the Siege Rhino, oh woe us.
98masurus now with 5 year old drawing art...
soulblacknight As soon as I heard Abzan the PTSD kicked in.
soulblacknight Leave Kev Walker alone! Leave him alone! I'm serious!
soulblacknight "Drawing art," as opposed to "art" or "drawing."
But I love that rhino
I am so glad to see that they are willing to tackle some more complex decks with people who know how. This is a great series, I think, for people not familiar with the game their normal routine is great but its nice for those of us who are familiar with the game to see some more complex tactics used every so often as well!
Plz plz plz plz bring this show back!!!
This is another example of why I am one of those terrible people who like both Blue and Black. I aspire to have as much fun playing MTG as Chris Kluwe.
I've believed, for a while now, that Blue-Black was my style of play.
This just confirmed it! :D
That was so much fun to watch, the both Sean and Chris were reacting was absolutely hysterical
I don't hate blue as a color but when you combine it with black it makes you want to flip a table after 3 turns
CaptainTalon448 Blue is horrible because my brother thought it was a great idea to put 2x mindrot in his deck. It's a spell that makes target player discards 2 cards. BS. Of course then there is also the other 2 cards that make you discard the top 5 cards and top 8 cards of your library. absolute bs.
CaptainTalon448 I play blue/black and it's such fun...but all my opponents hate me.
CaptainTalon448 See, Blue/Black is slow and grindy... But not nearly as Blue/Red.
Martin Ipsen Blue is awesome, i have 4 cards in my deck that makes the opponent discard the top 5 cards of his or her library and it only cost one island but its super fun to hold them in your hand and just use all those islands you have to make them discard 20 cards total and use Ludevics test subject to finish them off :)
camille bell Nice! Have you ever heard of a card Ludevics Test subject? its so fun to use and your opponents flips the table once its true glory is activated.
Great episode! That is the first time I've had a chance to see Demonic Pact actually played. When it was spoiled I thought it was super cool, great seeing it used so effectively.
Request! Any chance of getting a card list of the blue/black deck? I'd kinda heart getting to take a look at it.
Can I just say how well this episode was edited? Man the timing on this guy was killer.
Did you enjoy the episode? ...sure...
David Peveto sure...
David Peveto sure..
David Peveto Sure.
David Peveto It resolves.
Ichthyodactyl Sure.
I don't know why, but it's always more fun when Sean looses! Spellslingers is by far, the most entertaining MTG show on youtube. The pacing and lighthearted banter make it fun for all level of players. Keep it up!
At the Pre-Release I did the Two-Headed Giant event. My partner cast Demonic Pact, and we had a 15/15 Managorger Hydra with our opponents at 5 life. On our upkeep he picked the you lose the game option.
it was round 5, we had 1 win. Our opponents still marked it as a win for us. But ya, jerk move.
Cory Visser If by "jerk move" you mean "cool move."
LOL.
As a more experienced MtG player, this was definitely the most interesting episode so far. Seeing some of the new cards was cool and Chris Kluwe was entertaining to watch face stomp Sean.
I forsee a T-shirt with the lines "Sure. Sure. Sure. It resolves" on the G&S store sometime in the future!
Alyindar maybe next to "5 gold and a party"
Also, THANK YOU for NOT dumbing the advanced players down!
Please do more spellslingers!!!!!!!!!!!
This has been my favorite episode so far. Bravo!
This was such a fun game to watch. XD
Angelina Matthews "Removal..." "counter" "removal" "threat" "mass removal" "counter"... Looks like every other game that includes Blue. Permission is as fun to watch as paint drying. And it's even less fun to play against.
Orinn000 (Please bear in mind that I've only started playing magic since late November/early December last year.) Spellslingers, to me, is a series created to help introduce people to MTG and as a way to provide entertainment using casual play rather than the footage that most people may be watching from GPs or other tournaments that take on a more serious tone with hundred dollar decks. While I can see your point about control decks not being so much fun to play against, as I hate seeing my creatures go into the graveyard as well, every deck has their strengths and weaknesses. What about agro decks as suggested by ***** or mill decks or decks that utilize protection or infect? Those can be just as miserable but I digress... While it was unfortunate that Sean wasn't able to do much, it wasn't like he was unable to do anything at all through the round. Chris just happened to have better answers and draws. Overall, their interactions were amusing and they both seemed to enjoy themselves. Isn't that really the point?
Angelina Matthews The interactions, the players themselves? Great video, actually. I was laughing out loud at points, and I'm going back and watching it again. The gameplay, though? Boring. The video was entertaining despite the game they were playing. And Parth Patel : You can't expect anything to resolve. You can make some predictions, bait the counters, and predict what you can get done, but the one thing you cannot expect when playing against Blue/Black: you cannot expect to be able to play your deck.
Best episode yet. I hope we get to see more higher level players with interesting decks in the future.
I have a question about 15:29. Before languish resolves, can't he use disperse and Jace's tap to have 5 cards in graveyard to them flip Jace before Languish?
Ya, chris talked about that mistake on reddit, but it would have made him win just a little faster.
Kurt Horsting welp, can't fix that now
I think he draw it from the triggered ability of the 6/6 after resolving languish
Hands down the best episode you guys have done. Was hilarious and full of entertaining stuff going on. He has to come back for a rematch next aeason
It's a well known fact that Blue players don't deserve to play Magic!
But then again, neither do our opponents!
this is the best game so far that I've seen, dude actually knows what he's doing
Funniest part is, this is what made me start to play blue.
I think this was the best episode of the show to date. Experienced players make Sean turn up his game a bit (even though there wasn't much more he could have done with his hand in this game) and make it very entertaining to watch. The decks they played were fantastically built and the interaction between Sean and Chris was on point. Not to mention, seeing the card Sean needed was his next draw was icing on the cake.
Any chance of a list of the u/b deck. Looks sweet!
this one is my personal favourite episode of spellslingers. hopefully there will be many more!
Spellslingers made me interested in magic
This episode made me decide to never play magic
Youre an absolute loser for not playing tho and on top of that youre missing out big time buddy ;)
Honestly. I love these so much. You need to do this every new set.
Even though Blue/Black is pretty cool... my absolute favorite is Blue/Red, it really makes you think about every turn you make and the synergy between spells and creatures is amazing... like most other decks it's not about just putting creatures on the board.
The decks I really hate though are the life gaining ones... it's pure stalling without anything happening, really boring.
I love dimir control. and that was awesome to watch with actually relatively viable standard decks! More like this!
Video description refers to Alison in the second paragraph because it's a copy-paste from previous video, so you know!
Craig Cainkar nice catch.
Craig Cainkar That's a super weird mistake.
Craig Cainkar sure
Sure
Craig Cainkar Shame to Geek & Sundry's team! They should have known better!
You guys had off the charts chemistry, hilarious banter and great games!
I do like how the power level of the deck was a lot higher this episode... Well... not for Day9 lol
Super fun guys! Thanks for playing with Demonic Pact!!!!
need deck build lists for each episode please
Here you go: geekandsundry.com/spellslingers-deck-recap-day9-vs-chris-kluwe/
That look on Sean's face when Chris plays the second Demonic Pact! That could be a Poster moment.
I'm so freaking happy that the decks aren't complete trash anymore. The decks are so much cooler when they are constructed with good cards. Yay!
This was, quite possibly, one of the best episodes I've seen of this show. I haven't laughed so hard in a while!
Also Sean, Dromoka is a "she"
Philip Tree Sure
He's also chubby now.
Philip Tree Who. Fucking. Cares.
Philosjutsu i do i identify as a dromoka scalelord you sexist
Philosjutsu People who care care. I care. Sorry you're so insensitive.
That had to be the best episode yet! So good, so hilarious!
My hatred for blue is intensified even more.
I am currently in the process of constructing a Blue/Black deck and could not be happier with this episode.
Loved this match with two experienced players. At around 17:00 when Chris uses Languish followed by Disperse to return his Demonic Pact to hand, he (possibly for the edit) missed a better play? If he intended to Disperse on his turn while Sean had no cards and was tapped out, had he Dispersed first, followed by tapping Jace to draw and then discard a card, he could have flipped his Jace before wiping most of the board with Languish.
Best episode I've seen. Rematch!
that would be hilarious if Sean won from the Dimonic pact making Chris lose the game
I was sitting there for the final topdeck: "It's totally a Plains. It has to be a Plains." Thanks for not disappointing Sean! :D
God that made the blue player in me SO FUCKING HAPPY.
Uuuuugggghhhhhhhhhhh yeeeesssssssssssssssssss.
Fantastic episode.. GREAT editing!!
Such major misplays! "Sure" cannot resolve, EVER, the effect of "Sure" reads "Your opponent counters with "Sure" and when your opponent counters you counter their counter with effect of "Sure" creating an endless loop of "Sure"s, "Sure" never resolves, such scrubbery!!!
Excellent demonstration of the purest form of the strategy that Sean hates so much, as well as supreme example of how to be ingloriously defeated, vent your frustrations and yet remain a sportsman. Bravo Day[9], very good show.
You're not a blue player unless you can perfect that evil, shit-eating grin. :)
You actually did inspire me to go from literally about to sell all of my blue cards out of a loathing for the players to me building a blue/red and a blue/white deck to go with my main black/green deck. Thank you lol
One of my favorite episodes by far. I love seeing legitimate decks on this.
i want that blue black deck list lol
I prefer my black red one personally lol
The smile at 22:03 cracks me up! That's the exact look my wife or I give each other when we're playing Magic in similar circumstances.
