Am I the only one who watches this like every one or two years just to feel nostalgic and laugh? Like there are no new comments... but I'm so thankful this series exist... now after my nerd phase it brings me a lot of memories. Thank you, Geek & Sundry!
might want to start dl'ing these.
I think I've probably watched this video 5 or 6 times and I can never get over Rob saying "First Blood!" It's so god damn good.
You guys gotta have Rob back on in the new season!
"But what you don't expect... is for me to shoot, and for my entire arm to fall off."
Damn, Sean is pretty funny.
Spit out my coffee right there. Hilarious.
Duncan Van Ooyen I was drinking gatorade. There is now gatorade on my laptop.
"And for me to bleed to death on the court" That killed me!
I came down here only to like this comment.
As a person wanting to get itno magic the gathering and doesn't really know the rules I enjoy this a lot.
I feel like this is what pro tour coverage should be like. Average players like me aren't going to know what every card does.
That's why they do Deck Tech portions so you know what the cards do, also they bring up key cards during match coverage already.
I'm discovering these 8 years later as I learn the game. They are so helpful and fun to watch!
"What you don't expect, is for me to shoot and for my whole arm to fall off, and for me to bleed to death on the court."
Subbed, liked, and I LOL'd SO hard. Great episode and show.
I'm very glad this is here. That being said... Details Monger: the creature power/toughness explaination says "Toughness is the amount of damage a creature can withstand. If a creature takes an amount of damage greater than its toughness, it goes into its owner's graveyard." It should say "greater than or equal to". FYI
As someone who doesn't play Magic, (and has never played ) this was really easy to follow and was very interesting. Thank you for making this game easy for non-players to follow. ^_^
Note: Always kill the unblockable creature. Always.
Steven Boland How about a sliver that has unblockable (shifting sliver) shroud (crystalline sliver) poisonous (virulent sliver) indestructible (sliver hivelord) and can be returned to hand in case of mass exile (hibernation sliver) also sliver legion is on the field making that 1/1 a 6/6. Explain how you kill that. ( I do it every game)
MrSeanfish I'm pretty sure that he meant, if you are given the option, you kill the unblockable creature.
MrSeanfish Why would you do this
MrSeanfish Counter spells.
Steven Boland root sliver
It’s finally here! Our brand new show, #Spellslingers, is all about Magic: The Gathering Host Day[9](Sean Plott) takes on our first special guest -- eSports commentator Rob Simpson -- in a battle for the ages!
It's interesting, I like that it introduces the concepts of Magic to new players. Now we can bring the 'snark' level down a notch or two.
Who is putting together the decks? Are there decklists somewhere?
I wonder if they are using the M14 pre-constructed decks?
Can't wait to watch. I have always wanted to play this game but it looks REALLY complicated.
Day9 AND Rob Simpson? omnomnomnom
"I need to make the shot... for a million dollars... from half court... and what you're not expecting... is for my whole arm to fall off." You crack me up.
As a player, new to magic, this series could not be more helpful!!
Helps that its funny too :) awesome job guys
This was so well done with great music, editing, and it communicates everything so clear that by the time they're really into the match you can follow what's going on and actually start having fun. Both this and episode 2 have really encouraged me to start playing the game too.
This is a great show for newbies and veterans alike. It's entertaining, and a good way for us all to reach out to new players in a media that is engaging. Great work G&S!
Out of all the tutorial type Magic videos, THIS IS THE BEST!!!! Informative and, above all, entertaining. Way too show newbs, like myself, why this is a great game to play!
Remember children: always Executioner Swing the Elusive Krasis.
This was fantastic! I kept putting it off because I didn't think a match of Magic could be all that entertaining, but it was. It was the perfect mix between professional and casual, with Day and Rob explaining the rules and lingo clearly while still joking around.
And seriously Day, I know that pain of pulling a plains when you needed something else all too well.
If only Sean had believed in the heart of the cards, he could have drawn the perfect card and won.
i agree
Luther Barrett sess;i
He forgot to equip his plot armor.
Fun fact, Maverick from the 90s Mel Gibson movie invented the heart of the cards. Having perfected it right at the end and thus winning the giant stack of cash, snatching victory from the clearly evil dude.
amazing show.. ive been a fan of Sean day9 for 11+ years.. this is a gem to watch. Hope it will continue in the future.
I think I am finally understanding this game!!! So excited!! Thanks to Sean and to Rob, both amazing teachers.
Beautifully done! Great chemistry between you and the guest, and you "Tabletopped" the instructions just enough to make the complexity of the game clear!
Can't wait for the next ep.!! 8^D
Anybody know when season 2 of Spellslingers will come out so we can start watching the new episodes?
How dare you...
Awesome show, Sean works well as the everyman here. He's not the best player, he might stumble, but he tries and always has fun. That's the best kind of host. You must make more of these. The Internet demands it!

Great show
OMG I forgot how good this first episode was, so much salt.
Sean should invite *****, it would be an epic battle especially since he is the Hearthstone champion.
This show is great, terrific job by Day[9] and crew making Magic fun to watch. :)
Doug Rosengard magic is fun to watch. Its exciting. But this is fun. Wish they would do a sealed deck just to see their deck building skills that is the huge part of the game.
This is great. This is how MTG tournament games should be produced/broadcast. Truly a wonderful leap forward to the game if this kind of show picks up steam. I could watch all day.
Enchanting Elusive Krasis with Krasis Incubation was such a flavor win!
Yes, several people have said that this was their first exposure to magic so it is great that they show how/why they are doing things.
Seacoast Drake: 1/3 then the scene cuts to another (also blue) creature with 2/3 power toughness. Way to confuse people!
Been looking forward to something like this. Can clearly see the care put into the shows by everyone. Keep up the great work and I'll keep watching!
Correction: Spellslingers airs every other Wednesday -- and we're so excited for the next episode!
This comment didn't age well bring it back
Wow that channel is somehow even more dead than this one
This is awesome, I have been playing for 15 years and love seeing something to help bring new players to the game. Good job guys
Goddammit Sean, you made me want to start Magic. Now I have a starter deck with noe newbie friends to play with.
Welcome to the club. It sucks.
See if there's a comic store or game shop in your area that hosts magic events. There should be some friendly folk there who would be more than willing to play with a newbie.
No comic stores and the only game shop only does video games and parts for military miniature building. I've been trying to find other Magic players in the student body of my university. No luck as of yet. I'll have to settle for arranging my cards. :/
That's a shame. Well you can always be like me and pester your friends until they play with you. Having an extra starter deck to gift to them can help. Or just download magic the gathering online and play whenever the hell you want with strangers.
mirkwoodian You should start a magic club on your university, people will come like flies (I did it and it's going really really well so... Pro tip! haha :) )
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
"What an elusive fat krasis" DAY9 2014
Something I really enjoyed was the signs depicting the names and turn number. I dunno but each time those showed up I was like "Awesome". I look forward to more of these. Great job to everyone involved!
Try Hard Moment of the Year: Saying "It resolves" after an attack
After revisiting this series, and becoming a more advanced magic player not to mention that comparing it to his future adversaries, I have to say this was a really good close match. You know this because both players reveal in their personal comment section that they think they are going to lose. Very well done and an entertaining watch :)
It's crazy to see how in shape and healthy looking Sean was when this all began.
+Tyler Mabry Why... He looks the same now, just little different hair and more cats D: ... ?
I went back and watched all of these, amazing show! Never stop doing it!
Hey day9 you should add a video on how to make the wheel of fate. Because i want one really bad
Incredible graphics and use of visuals to demonstrate the game on a basic and new-player level! I'm already in love with this channel~
Oh Day[9]... "Lets summon them.. VVLOOOOOOOOO XD"
The production on this show is amazing, to say the least. And as always, Sean is an awesome guy as is Rob. Keep up the good work guys!
Just found this series. I want more! MOAR!!!
I've been subscribed because I'm a big fan of Starcraft II and play frequently. Although I'd heard of Magic, I didn't know anything about it; I didn't even know it's a card game.
That being said, watching this video was incredibly entertaining; the pauses to give descriptions of different aspects of the game and to clarify what each player was doing made the game very easy to understand and enjoyable to watch. Great video, looking forward to more in this series!
you need to belive in the heart of, wait wrong game.
Anyone else rewatching this series at the end of 2021? The nostalgia is real.
Started playing mtg with Born of the Gods and found this series soon after. I remember looking forward to these vids and watching them right after they came online. Much nostalgia in these cards as well as the way of playing; two friends playing simple straightforward magic and having fun. Ahh the good old times.
I sincerely feel like a nerd for enjoying this.
PLEASE BRING THIS SHOW BACK!
There should really be a version of these that are not tutorials for magic...I just want to see them play. I know how mtg works. I'm not looking for an explanation of the rules every 10 seconds.
They do get better along the series. I think it's just because this is the first episode they showed all of the tutorial type stuff.
Yeah I noticed that after posting the comment hehe. I've watched them all now bahaha.

I'm hoping for season 2 that they up it to more intermediate cards and decks. This is all beginner/Starter decks to introduce people. Sean Plott has played on the Pro Tour (as an invite of course, not a qualifier, but still) and I've seen him play Draft tournaments on his channel so I know he's capable of advanced level Magic playing.
Only X-factor is finding guests that fit the criteria of these ones, plus with more advanced Magic experience. :)
Oh for sure, since watching these videos I've subbed to Day9's channel and watched all of his MTG videos. No doubt he's a capable magic player and I think more advanced decks would be awesome. I definitely think it should be a slow curve with the decks getting more and more advanced though as to not confuse the newer players. At the end of the day, there ain't nothing wrong with new players. =D
Exactly. Moving from main phase -> beginning of combat step-> declare attacker step is often asked for in case the opponent has something that he wants to play before attackers are declared (like frost breath).
Rob is hot.
Excellent new show! The post on this was outstanding, it really made the match easy to follow. great job as always G&S!
Rob is hella hot!
We hope to entertain our Magic pros and also bring more players into the community!
this reminds me of hearthstone in real life
-.-
wat
Wych177 what
Magic the gathering is so much older and so much better.
well it does
I'm surprised how well this format works! I'm really looking forward to the next episode.
Awesome job! I wish something like this was around when I was getting into Magic. They had that old tutorial video but this is just the right mix of rules, lingo, and, of course, entertainment! Can't wait for the next episodes to come!
i dont know if im really druuuunk, BUT...this is the best UA-cam show ever!...carry on meow
I just got into Magic like, a month ago, I'm playing the app to actually learn how so this video was actually incredibly informative on the more casual lingo that a practiced player would know that a noob like me would be like "what? what does that mean?" Keep up the great work! Can't wait to see another.
One of the Best geek&sundry shows to date! Proud subscriber to Day[9]TV and a member of the DayKnights!
Please, please, please, keep doing what you did with this episode. Keep the show about the game and the chemistry between the people playing.
Though the show is great, my favorite parts are all the graphics and transitions. The 5 color super glossy wheel next to their names, the card atanomy scene, seriously, it makes this show look super professional. Love it. Love everything about it
The production value of this is incredible. It is a tad slow for my tastes, but you know what? That didn't stop me from watching it. you truly have a good thing going here. I happily subscribe.
Great episode and I really liked the explanations and demonstrations with the animations. I'm learning magic and this series is fantastic! Please bring us more 😀
I think it's a fantastic idea. Was great to watch with friends who are just getting in to magic. They make it clear it's not geared towards tournament/experienced players. I thought it was very well done.
I've played for 12 years soon and really enjoyed watching this. Good work!
This is one of the very best videos on the internet. I watch it everyday. I love it.
I really like the format of this show. It's surprisingly educational compared to other shows about magic, with extremely clear explanations for all the mechanics. Although, as said by other people, a way to see player's hands would be cool.
This was really great fun to watch. I laughed a lot and learned about a game I've never gotten to play. Hope to see more like this in the future.
The production level on this is insane! great job!
Thank you!
Awesome video and great for beginners ... I just started a week ago and this was very helpful. Also, the chemistry between these two is excellent. Good stuff!
Wow this show is really well put together..definitely looking forward for more of this! Thanks G&S!
I bet this is much more entertaining to those who have ever looked at any of these cards ever. Even though I haven't, I still found your interaction worth the watch. Who knows, maybe I'll even understand one thing about this game when this is all done.
"What an elusive, fat Krasis." and the line delivered perfectly. Excellent comedy, Sean!
This show got me into magic and I’m grateful I have found these videos again
One of the greatest things I have ever seen on UA-cam. Bravo.
I love the way they explained the rules and what was going on. I do know how to play magic but as a beginner I found it really helpful
Great job on picking Day[9] as the host for this show! Looking forward to every single episode now!
awesom show! I've been such a MTG fan since the beginning and it's cool to have G&S show about it! Keep these coming!
Bring this show back!
I can't believe I missed this show. First episode was fantastic. Going to fly through all the episodes that are up!
Thank you so much!
The synergy is amazing between these two
What G&S does for "new media" is seriously underrated. I'd implore any to find another channel. Hitch creates as professional work. This was fantastic.
Just started playing this game again since it first came out and this show did help a little to get back into it. Keep it up.
How you know a video was well done: When you remember the video the next day while you're at work, and remember funny quotes from it when you only watched it one time.
Good job on this!
Man, id love to see some new episodes of these. Game has changed so much!! Plus I miss seeing Day9 playing Magic the Gathering, he always makes me laugh. 🤞 For one day they will come
I come back to this every now and then to remember where it all began.
Ya, this show is a keeper for sure.
And it doesn't feel like 20 minutes when you're watching.
I'm a pretty huge fan of this already and I know Magic fairly well having played for about 12 years. :)
Really enjoyed that. Thanks for the show. As a suggestion: a peek at the players hands (a la WSP) would generate comments for days as your comment-ers argued what you did wrong.
Awesome show! This made me dig out my old magic cards from the 90's and now I'm hooked again with M14. Wizards of the Coast should send you all some money :)
I am in love with this series. Not trying to hate on a certain other cardgame coming out on PC soon but Magic is just much more enjoyable to watch for me! Keep it up, Day9!
That first blood animation actually scared me.. lol Love Magic and Sean though, great show!!
Just one thing: at 5:50 there should be "if a creature takes damage equal or greater than its toughness, it goes into it's owners graveyard." Good show anyhow.
This is exactly the kind of Magic The Gathering show I wanted to see, something casual with recent cards. Also, I looove random deck play.
I've learned more in your videos than all the other ones on youtube. More please!
I've probably watched this episode 20 times and when Day 9 tells that analogy of the half court shot, then draws that Plains and yells THIS FEELS HORRIBLE!...makes me laugh every...single...time. :)
Cannot wait for the new season!
