I’ll never forget, my math teacher was friends with the creator of Magic the Gathering. And he told us about how he played the game with a small group of friends when it was still in development and he has some of the original stuff hung up in his class room.

My god, that Italian family seriously hit me right in the feels zone.
I've never played magic in my entire life, but the way they respect the game and make it a good time like that makes me wanna give it a whirl with some friends.
its alot of fun if you have a group of friends. I've made alot of them growing up playing Magic, even though "cooler" kids laughed at us, we didn't care because it was so much fun. I stopped playing because I moved but for all of my teenage and half of my adult life i played every week with a dozen or so long time friends.

I taught my kids to play magic, and now we have big family games. My wife, the kids, and myself all against each other. It's a fantastic way for the family to bond and a way for all of us to have a common interest. I absolutely love this game.

I watched this documentary for the first time 7 years ago and I always come back every few years. Gosh time flies but I’m so happy this is what got me into magic.

The Italian brothers make the game far more appealing than the professional players.
It's because to them, MtG is an experience, it's fun and a part of their childhood AND their adulthood. The pros do it for money and some of them don't see the fun in it

myztikrice Look at their faces, do they look like they're having fun. When you feel physically ill from losing, is that fun? Maybe from just watching this 18 year old's experience, I'm put off by the tournament scene, but still, this guy doesn't project an aura of joy when he's playing
+Herman Melville i mostly stopped playing once things became too focused on having a tight deck with lots of duplicates of key cards to make killer combos when what i liked was, well, the artwork and the making of decks themed around the type of critter, a nice angelic focused white & green deck, or blue & black dragons and dead things.
plus i bought a lot of my cards in europe so my decks tended to be in a mix of english, german, and french. despite what they say about not needing to speak the same language, your opponent often likes to read what the card does for themself and not just trust your explanation of what your Schrecken aus dem All has done [German Cosmic Horror].
but french and german cards were going for about half of what english cards were going for. and english cards in prague and budapest in the late 1990s were going for half of US price, so that's where the real binge-buying began.
+Jw Slifer some people find enjoyment in winning. they don't really experience what others would call "fun". it's kind of a time-waster when you could be comparing your abilities against others to demonstrate your dominance.
while those who are interested in fun view competition more as the time-waster instead. too intense, too focused on winning and losing, when you could be enjoying the experience of playing instead.
people have different types of emotions, and different levels of the emotions they have. there are people who don't have much of a "joy" section of their brain. those people also tend to have a very weak "relax" section of their brain as well.
perfectally cromulent is phd psychologist as well as mtg player, so is trustworthy source of wisdom on individual differences with regard to emotional states. also is on the having fun with the nice cards side. too many fun goblin and orc cards out there to be too concerned with winning.

From 1995 till about 2001 I collected Magic Cards... never once played a game. I just liked the badass drawings.

A word of advice: never EVER get caught up in the money aspect of the game. The experience of winning or losing does not get more fun with more expensive decks. These days there are plenty of resources for building cheap decks that are still competitive enough to have fun with. The reality is, unless you treat Magic like a full time job, you will probably never have a single meaningful result, so you might as well just try to have fun and not waste your money on expensive cards.
Amen, brother, That is why I never delved into the competitive side of magic or yugioh because i feel like most people treat these games as pay to win.

Jacob Wilson stopped being active in MtG a few years ago, as of this writing. He was kept on Channel Fireball and participated in Team related competitions. It's looking like he probably shifted his attention back to University and has ultimately moved on to another phase in life. He did not win a Pro Tour.

I used to play to win and make infinite loop decks and 100% stopping power types, eventually it just gets boring and I started craving theme creature decks and I have 13 creature types finished so far and it’s a blast to play them now! Such a great and versatile game.
Tribal decks are fun.

+broshaman The ironic part about that is, if you take the top dozen cards the Italian dudes own, those cards are worth about the same as a medium sized house. If you take into account all of their cards, you can buy a sports card with it. So, 'casual' and 'vintage' in Magic are words that really don't go together.

Magic is an excellent game of strategy, I was first exposed to it during my years in college and once I started playing it I couldn't stop playing it. My favorite creatures and deck themes were goblins (red theme deck) and zombies (black theme deck)
I was hoping they'd spend more time on the actual history of the game. It's really changed a lot over the years, and it's a pretty interesting world for the uninitiated.

I've played online a little bit. It was fun but so complicated to learn. More than a little difficult. Whoa I love that the family plays it together. That's so cool. Especially seeing older people playing the game with their kids. I'm jealous honestly.

My favourite part was at the end when the kids were playing. I can remember experiencing the magic for the first time when I was their age. Truly an amazing game where you can challenge yourself as well as make great friends!

This covered game play really well but even as a game play focused person, they needed a segment on secondary market value and how that changes the way Jacob, the vintage players and the day 1 kids are able to play.

xJoeEdgex Sure. Basically some cards are worth a lot of money so people put them in plastic sleeves so they don't get damaged. The Volcanic Island at 0:56 is worth at 150$ and the fact that it isn't in a sleeve is surprising because cards gets damaged easily and they loose value that way.

back in around 97 when i was 25 i got my first apartment with an old friend from highschool and another mutual friend, by that point we were sort of into different things. so i was going out clubbing and doing what i was doing and he got really into magic, every payday he use to go to a little local game shop and buy an entire sealed case of cards and then spend the whole evening just opening them and sorting them by rarity. so he just had stacks and stacks of the things, he probably had hundreds of the same common cards that he had no use for and no one else wanted them. and he actually never had anyone to play with but just kept collecting them. i didnt really pay attention and dont know a lot about it, i just remember that rare black lotus card he was always hoping to find. i cant say anything because i blew all my money in the 90s on old obscure records that had never made it to CD and on action figures. but i wonder sometimes if he still has all those cards in boxes under his bed where they have never served any sort of use. at least my toys got displayed and my records got played.
the italian brothers seem to enjoy it way more, it just seems way more enjoyable when played casually rather than playing it seriously, that dude is beating him self up over loses.

I know a guy that plays MTG without sleeves and still uses 3 of the power nine, he'll tell you he doesn't give rat's ass about how much they're worth. It's his cards, he never intends to sell or trade anyways.

I got into playing Magic: The Gathering because of my friends at a camp. I bought a deck and it was really fun to play. Unfortunately I dont go to that camp anymore and nobody in my area plays Magic so I haven't played in a while...

Probably the cards that were printed for Richard Garfield's personal use. I heard it was used to propose to his then-girlfriend at the time. Some of the copies were stolen.

I think the great part of the game is no matter what walk of life you've had, there are so many different types of people that play it. I joined the military thinking no one would be into it, only to find an amazing community. Now I'm home, in a completely different place in life. I still find new people to play with. Amazing game.

if it was for big money...i wouldnt talk either...it would put me off.
Unless you qualify for top 8(even then you can get warnings for slow play)your rounds are timed for 50 minutes and chatting can eat up that time like nobody's business.
I've always been more of a casual magic player. I never really bothered ordering a bunch of cards just to make a powerful (and expensive) deck. Instead I enjoyed finding the potential in cards I randomly pulled and throwing them together into a Frankenstein like deck. Of course they were pretty bad but I never really cared about winning, that wasn't what the game was about to me. To me it was about taking up a whole table in the school cafeteria to play while we ate pizza we got from across the street. To me it was about having a couple friends over so we could trade to improve our decks and get a couple games in on the kitchen table. To me it was always about the experience of the game, not the outcome. I've unfortunately moved away from the game recently but deep down I know there is still a passion for it waiting to be rekindled. Hopefully I will be give the chance to do so.

+Lou Leone He is probably planning for a duel and has a secret trick up his sleeve. Also, it may be manipulation of messed up cards into more cards, so this way he can get full cards but have his own secret. Sometimes it depends on who he is facing, they may change the deck.

Brought back some good times, and memories, but I checked the prices and they really are like an investment. Makes me seriously wish I would have kept my Pokemon cards but I didn't know any better at the time.

Do you recommend sleeves? Mine don't have any but I figured they will get damaged inevitably with or without sleeves. Plus I don't have too many rare cards
Wow this brings back memories from ages ago. I totally forgot at one point I spent entire weekends at card shops (can't believe they're still around!)
I grew up in a tiny town, and I remember spending entire weekends at the card shop with my younger brother talking to the employee (there would be just 1 unless there was a tournament) and playing trading card games while my mother went shopping at the mall. It was probably the only card shop for miles and it was a very small suburban area so it was just kids hanging out like us.
We moved to a city and we did the same thing but it really was the wild west back in the day and the fun just wasn't there because this was a really serious hangout spot where maybe 50% of the folks were adults and were spending a lot of money on their decks and it was all about winning and not meeting people or hanging out. And then there were the cheating controversies and fake cards and stolen cards and just general intimidation tactics we faced because my brother and I were probably the 2 youngest players there. We just didn't fit the demographic and literally no one ever talked to us even though we were fairly regular players in the weekly tournaments (and we'd hang out hours after they ended because our mother would still be out).
This is probably one of those areas that social media and camera phones documenting games helps provide transparency. I remember playing an opponent who had her cards in the thick plastic that could barely be shuffled and her dad 'cutting' her deck so desired cards would he drawn. There was no regulation at all. And anytime you had a complaint you needed to be good buddies with the organizers to be heard or have definite proof (often that'd have to be spectators who'd have to be your buddies to back you up). And god knows the trouble you had if you were half the age of the accused. I'm surprised tournaments are still around! But I guess things have improved, so I'm happy that kids don't have to deal with as much of the headache as we did back in the day.

Never played this myself, but always though this game looked like loads of fun to play. Over here in the UK you usually have to travel a bit to find someone to play against

I started playing with housemates during the Fallen Empires expansion, altho some of them had gotten hands on beta test cards at local Seattle sci-fi/fantasy conventions. Then I discovered that a former co-worker's illustrations were in the production sets. Not sure how WotC compensated their artists, but at the time a lot of artists were putting bread on the table by illustrating cards for CCG's.

sounds REALLY UNLIKELY considering that this is a card game, there is no illegal card that can get you arrested, and the ones that are illegal are only illegal if you play it on a format that has that card banned (like vintage allows you to play black lotus, but its banned in legacy)ELECTRlCz

I remember being a kid with 8-10 when Magic was released . Since then I dreamt about learning how to play and collecting cards while observing the older kids from the block buying packs and playing together.
There was indeed something magical about it with the beautiful and yet haunting aspect of the card's art.
I didn't have the budget to buy the cards, as they are a bit expensive here in Brazil, and I had other plans (candies) with the pocket money my parents gave me. The game was also extremely complex for my age lol.
Now that I've been playing online a lot and started to build my first deck with physical cards, is very rewarding and a dream accomplished. The smell of the cards just after ripping the pack remains the same
