One of the biggest problems with plastering is dealing with Artex ceilings. This affects a lot of people and one of the biggest jobs for plasterers is skimming over this dated classic.
In this video, I’ll show you the exact process I use to plaster over an Artex ceiling. However, there are a few things to consider. I’ll talk about safety, (this is hugely important), the preparation you need to follow to get the job right and I’ll even talk about the tools I use to get a lovely, flat, polished ceiling.
I also talk about timings and discuss the big difference between plastering a standard ceiling and plastering over Artex.

My house is 1985 and my Artex has come back positive for asbestos. They stopped producing it in 1984 but some left over stock was still used.

Im self taught and id say pretty competent at plastering and rendering, but i still enjoy watching your videos because everyday is a learning day and im always open to learning new tips and tricks. sly it shouldn’t do as you are only adding a minuscule amount.
I add paint seems to work fine.. 🤠
Will also stain skirting boards and coving, would not recommend, unless you want to spend 20 minutes using baby wipes at the end

Hi bud. I'm a plasterer myself from Scarborough and been doing it about 16 year. I just decided to watch some vids of plastering on UA-cam out of boredom and came across your vids. And to be honest I work pretty much same as you and enjoy watching your vids they are really good. I was always tought 2 coats ect just like how you do it. And I've just started using the ox speed skims. I have a plastic and metal blade one . Only 600mm though but a great tool for flattening ect.

I plastered for years over artex without knowing the danger with it. It Does make you think about the jobs I've done in the past. Lovely job again mate.
I've got a lite artex ceiling coming up, it doesn't need scraping just unibonding.
Need to get one of those speedskims first though. I've heard people suggesting getting the steel blade ox but seeing you use the plastic blade alot. It does a fine job and saves a lot of time.

I've found if I let the first coat go off a bit my second coat goes on a treat, I used to do first coat then smash the second coat on but it never looked perfect. I suppose you never stop learning. Great video blain cheers buddy.

Great videos, it's still possible to find asbestos in artex way into the 90s av recently found out, although tiny amounts, av taken a few chances, because money is money and work is work, but if its really old artex, I explain to the customer and in most cases they get it tested for around £100, its there ceiling, its there sector, stay safe 👍

I always put bonding in with the first court so help blind the surface and get over the worst of it. Then a top coat. Interesting to see how others do it. Might try that sciming Derby thing. Looks good

When the artex pattern is very proud, I sometimes use a thin coat of bonding plaster before the multifinish.

Just finished my hallway and the artex pulled away from the plasterboard. Reboarded ceiling, reskimed,perfect finish

Im always cautious about plastering over artex.always try to overboard first,much better job.i learnt my lesson years ago,and let the customer against my better judgement talk me into going over with bonding and finish.next day after clearing up all the fallen plaster i overboarded and skimmed.plastering for 35 years now,but i really enjoy your videos.well done.
Do you know why it fell by any chance? Maybe not sealed properly initially?
@@wassupjg most old ceilings have distemper on them.artex seems to stick to this.but as soon as you try to overskim ,it comes away due to the moisture of the plaster along with the weight.always better to overboard and skim.plus this gives you added sound proofing and fire protection.

I'd use it directly after I've flattened the 2nd coat is plaster. It's great to use for the 1st trowel. Hope this helps pal 👍

Good video. I did my city and guilds approx 10 years ago. I’m actually a kitchen fitter but was always waiting for plasterers!! So I learnt to plaster. My course used to make us skim three coats of finish instead of scraping of stipple etc. I’m a expat in Spain now, that’s a completely different ballgame! We use perlinor here, the closest I’ve come to finding multi finish. Just sets a bit quicker.
I've used febond instead of pva, and it holds really well..
Hi bud.. Have a far different approach on these as had one come down with the finish shrinking and pulled the artex background down.. Was quite a lage area mind. So I recommend that artex on a small lid ain't to bad wit this method.. On bigger lids I always bond um out as this seems to cure the issue.. 🤠

Great work thank you for uploading it.i have done recently an Artex ceiling myself , but haven’t used one of them speedskim boards.looking at them ,there are two options,plastic or steel blade, which one would you recommend?i thought my plastering looks very good and couldn’t see any unlevel bits, walls or ceilings,but by looking in different lighting, without the lights on ,just the daylight and even that depending on mornings or evenings , I could see some unlevel parts , which I think could be avoided if I would of used one of them speedskimm fancy tools...many thanks Rob
Yeah the Speedskim is a great bit if kit and it definately flattens your walls to a higher standard. I've seen an massive difference since using it so I definately recommend it! I'd go for the plastic blade matey - is cracking!

Friend of mine showed me a way of skimming over artex, 1st coat was half bonding half skim mix and for the 2nd coat was just a normal finish mix. Always worked perfectly

@@leabeauty837 bonding is known as a plaster undercoat but generally its used to fill up holes and voids in area's of walls that aren't plumb, its a brilliant material and sets like rock. Also very good for plastering over old artex

One guy battened and boarded over the top. I told him the batten was only to correct the ceiling if it was out (i think I’m right? ) he said you had to batten.... the ceiling is a mess more lumps and bumps than before i think he did the battens as he couldn’t be arsed to work out where the joists where to screw to? I couldn’t be a plasterer if i had to work on other peoples boarding.
Not excuses at all This is the most reckless and irresponsible video I've ever seen. He just gone and scraped away a load of artex from mid 80's on the basis that 'someone' told him it was OK. This vid ought to come with a health warning. No one shoul EVER scrape away any old artex unless it's tested first' All those viewers including seasoned 'professionals' blowing smoke up his ass and praising him clearly haven't got a clue. He ought to be ashamed posting this sort of dangerous video. Do NOT do this EVER
@@bigchiponmyshoulder7573 Obviously you could skip the scrapping step and lay the plaster on even thicker or as he says in the video over board. From who id heard from they clearly just couldn’t be bothered or thought the plaster simply wouldn’t stick. Clearly it is possible to do. Non of the excuses id heard were linked to asbestos.

Is a refina superflex suitable for the whole job and what size trowel would you recommend. what size of speedskim would you recommend for a beginner, 600 or 1200? Can the sponge float method be used on artex ceilings and is this a better method for someone who has never plastered?

I used to work how you did plastering ceilings with a hop up no speedskim pole attachment etc, changed about 3 months ago got a pair of stilts never looked back. Get yourself a pair of stilts you’ll legs will feel completely different at the end of the day! 👍

Plastering For Beginners I had to mate tbh on price everyday knocking out houses, couldn’t walk when I got in haha just bought a pair practised walking around at home then started scrimming up ceilings now walk on them like I’ve used them all my life lol

Ha that's a lot to practice on mate! The nipple stipple ceilings can sometimes be ok because you can scraped the texture right back. It just depends on the strength of the Artex. Anyway, good luck and thank you for your constant support. Cheers mate 👍

Thank you, I really appreciate that. The product is British Gypsum Multi Finish but I'm really not sure if you can get it in the States (I doubt it 😒) However, when I worked in NZ my friend used to ship a pallet over because he loved using the English products. The only thing you have to watch out for is the sell by date - it does have a shelf life. Hope this helps and thanks again 👍

Hi Blaine great info there and wondering could tiles be plastered over or dot and dab with plasterboard and skim? Any tips would be appreciated as taking tiles off is going to cause massive work as walls are constructed of old 50 mil clinker blocks with weak plaster over.

Hey Blaine great vid I’m going to have a crack at plastering over my artex this weekend. What ratio do you mix the plaster for when doing artex? I know you say to make it thicker but are we talking a litre less of water or more? Or less?
Hi mate - I would still keep the mix the same because it's just easier to work with. You just want to apply it thicker that's all - 12.5L of water to one bag of plaster pal! Thats the dream mix 👍

I got 5 ceiling to do starting Monday a bathroom separate toilet and 3 bedroom going to use this video as my tutorial as it's my first artex cover job. I have given my self 5 days to carry out this. Do you think it's enough time for a first time effort.
I'm struggling to find plaster due to covid i have a 3m x 2m plaster striped of old artex wall. About 3mm thick. Could i use ready mixed plaster skim?
Tried plastering walls a couple of times and always find it starts to dry and when I start to smooth it out i get tiger stripes. Found your vids really good. I now have a whole house to re-plaster including popcorn ceilings. Is plastering aspestos popcorn basically the same process as the artex?

Q2, I was lead to believe that bonding coat and then a 2nd coat of skimming was the way forward for such a job. Obviously not the case. What type of job would you use a bond and skim coat?
Glad to hear you found it useful matey! Yeah you usually wait for the PVA to go tacky but to be honest I've never found it to be a massive issue if you don't. You can come back to it when it's completing dry otherwise. I never really use Bonding on Artex - it's all down to preference. If it's an extreme case of Artex which can't be scraped then Bonding is the answer. Everyone has a different method and like I said, it's all down to preference pal 👍

Hi mate, great hearing from you. It's not as bad when the Artex isn't as defined so I'd mix 12.5 litres of water to one bag of Multi Finish. This should give you the right consistency pal! Hope this helps and good luck with your ceilings 👍

Great vid mate , when I finally move into our new house I have all the ceilings to do as it has the devils artex and I mean heavily embossed stuff , which I’m not scraping at all . I find that sometimes Pva can be a bit hit and miss like patchy when drying so now I use blue grit ,it’s expensive but it’s a good product . I must admit I can’t wait to get my hands on this house , but probably will be cussing when I’m rebuilding it which normally happens lol 😂. Yeah I see what you mean with PVA but I'm not a massive fan of Blue Grit (and I hate the 24 hour waiting time ha) but I do understand why people use it. Plastering For Beginners I might try what Gaz does with the magic mix ( 50/50 bonding multi finish) or 3 coats multi as I’m not doing this for a living it’s not a problem with time , I just want it to be first class job . @@nannasfeet gaz's 50/50 mix is brilliant. I'm not a plasterer, just a DIYer but the first ceiling I did was plastering over artex. I used thistle bond it first and whilst the finish is far from perfect the bond it and magic mix did a great job of filling out the artex before putting on two coats of multifinish.

I'm looking for your professional opinion on woodchip wallpaper especially on a ceiling (or as our friends over the water call it, popcorn paper) and if you can plaster / skim over the top of that or would I have to board it first? Ive had a nightmare this week. Did a very large artex ceiling, blue grit it and followed this process but 4 days later a section fell off. First time using blue grit and only used it coz it was satin paint. On reflection looks like I didn't put enough blue grit on. Proper gutted 😔
I’m sure I’ve seen u in the past to do a 30% 70% mix with hardwall and multi finish to overcome real bad undulating areas du reckon u could use this mix on an artexed ceiling if the texture is quite prominent obviously only on the first coat
Another great video! Big thank You! I remember my first artex ceiling and it was nightmare... especially with times. I have 2 questions: 1. It's not first time when I noticed you plaster ceiling and wall with the same corner at the same time. How do you deal with it? And 2nd: Have you ever plaster ceiling above carpet? Can you make a video how do you protect everything in a room (carpets, skirting board, sockets - btw. I use food foil to protect sockets and switches, maybe it sounds funny but it does the Job). Is it any chance to protect walls before painting?
You can buy carpet protection to protect carpets or dustsheets.
Hi mate! It's great hearing from you again! Yeah they can be very troublesome but it's all down to timings! I plaster a lot of wet corners which can be a bit of an issue but with time you can really get into it. There's s video in the advanced section of The Plasterers Blueprint actually - I discuss it in detail there matey! Yeah that's a great idea. I usually use start sheets and making tape around the shirts but you could also use carpet protectors as our friend above mentioned! Hope this all helps pal and it's great to hear from you again 👍
Have you ever tried flattening/closing in with your flexi. I tried the other day as labourer was trying to use my finish trowel. Will be doing it from now on. So much better I felt!
I watched a video on youtube years ago from a really good hand soon after the flexi came out, he put on and finished with a flexi. ever since that day I have done the same, I know they are meant to be a finishing trowel only, but it has never given me a problem, and its cured my tennis elbow, it just makes life so much easier, if I have doctored a bit of bonding up and needed to skim it straight over and obviously it sometimes blebs, then I need to give a very hard trowel with steel, other than that it leaves a first class job
@@greenup9913 totally mate. I use a refina superflex, couldn’t find finishing trowel on job last week and done the full whack with it and was much lighter on the arm etc. left exact same finish too !
@@williammacphee335 anything that saves your arm/body is worth a try, I have never looked back since watching that video, I was told when I first started plastering, by an old joiner to get out of this job as it kills horses, and he was right, we really do need to look after ourselves if we intend doing this job long term, especially if your a site worker
@@greenup9913 I’m domestic work mate don’t touch sites. Good money but killing yourself daily. Rather do a room in 2 days for 700 (approx) than rattling it out in 2 gauges in 4 hours for 400 and in agony for days after

Good vid. I worked in the USA for awhile and they regularaly go over texture. I have seen many times after pva-ing the artex coming off dropping off or even worse theyve artexed onto oil based paint and the plaster peel off. You know what i saw them use which was quick? I’ve stipple in my small bathroom ceiling and I’m no good at plastering.
I’m on my own! Is it possible to trowel a layer of plasterboard adhesive to the ceiling.. then offer up a small plasterboard to stick to the adhesive and put in a few screws to hold the board in place while the adhesive cures? Then remove the screws…fill in joints and so on?
What size aria is good to work at a time on my own. Like drying time from start to finishing?

Hi mate. Wipe the ceilings down with sugar soap first to remove any grease - then PVA and prep accordingly pal 👍

Great video mate got a question to ask, have you ever plastered a wire mesh ceiling? Gotta do it in a couple of weeks and haven't done it before
Thanks pal! I've plastered a stair winder which was meshed but never a ceiling. For the winder you have to apply a thick base coat of Bonding before you can apply the finish plaster. The bonding binds to the mesh with ease but you may have to apply a few coats. To speed it up you can add cement to the bonding mixture. This makes it set faster pal (saves waiting for it to set ;) Hope this helps

I bought a house with woodchip and artex, its taken ages to get the woodchip off and plaster the walls. I need to learn to plaster the ceilings and cover the artex.
best way to treat asbestos is if in doubt...always assume it is asbestos. you can take a small sample in a bag and have it tested for like £20. why risk it? not just you exposed, its that whole house, their family, your clothes and van and then your family at home

Yes. That's I told my friend when we started drilling into artex. Put a mask on. He did not listen, hell knows what will be his consequences.
